Hans Weaver CLASS OF 2013 BUSINESS MAJOR NEW HOLLAND, PA. WHY GOSHEN: It was a family thing! My mother went to Goshen and so did my grandparents, so that probably had a lot to do with it. Also, I was looking for a college that had a strong business program and a strong music program. Goshen fit the bill.

AFTER GRADUATION: My business partner and I launched a business with an entrepreneurship grant from Goshen. Hopefully I’ll be involved with that. It’s called MennoTea, and it’s a play on the word “meadow tea,” which is a family recipe for a simple summertime tea.

I’M HOPEFUL: For a world where people can feel free to express themselves. A world where there’s more honor, and fewer lines drawn between people. Basically, a less cliquish world. For myself, I hope I can look back on my life and feel like I’ve had a positive impact on people.

IT HELPS TO HAVE LIVED THERE. THATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S ONE REASON we chose countries like Peru, Cambodia and Tanzania as destinations for our top-ranked Study-Service Term (SST).

Founded in 1968, SST is one of the longestrunning study-abroad programs in the country. (We were one of the first colleges in the country to include an international education requirement in our core curriculum and among the first to send undergraduates to China.)

Study-Service Term also focuses on service and the importance of making a real, measurable contribution to host countries. The second half of the semester could find you helping at a health clinic, teaching English to local school children or involved with ecotourism.

In addition to on-campus classes, Goshenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s innovative May Term provides opportunities for our professors to teach such subjects as canoeing on the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, marine biology in the Florida Keys, history and archaeology on Hopi and Navajo reservations, arts in London, business in Spain, the Bible in Greece and Italy and Anabaptist history in Paraguay.

WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU COMBINE

COMPASSION, CONVICTION & SERIOUS SMARTS? YOU GET THINGS DONE. Just ask the fine folks of northern Indiana: Recently, the Nursing Department at Goshen College teamed up with local healthcare professionals to host a health fair, which provided free basic services to underserved residents. And every year accounting students offer free tax filing for local, low-income residents. Whether you’re majoring in physics or religion, at Goshen you’ll have the chance to dig in and develop interdisciplinary solutions to global problems. And with small classes (most have fewer than 25 people), you are guaranteed to genuinely engage with the subject matter and your professor, who will know you by name.

If you’re an environmental science or biology major, much of your time will be spent at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, a 1,189-acre natural sanctuary filled with ponds, lakes and swamps. Interested in American Sign Language? You will get the chance to interpret during chapel or convocation. If science is your calling, you can study marine biology at Goshen’s Florida Keys facility. English your passion? Publish your poetry or essays through Broadside or Pinchpenny Press. You could also have the chance to conduct research alongside a Goshen professor, through the Maple Scholars summer research program. Maple Scholars is a great way to build up your résumé – and get a jump on grad school.
