PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING PEACE.

AT GOSHEN, WE’RE IF YOU BELIEVE IN CARE OF THE EARTH AND CARE OF ONE ANOTHER, IF YOU PUT YOUR FAITH AND GOD BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, THIS IS THE COLLEGE FOR YOU. WE’RE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SERVE THE WORLD WITH JOY IN THE NAME OF PEACE.

“Goshen College was the best choice I ever made. I was able to play baseball, broadcast games and learn Spanish and put it into practice all in just four years. I am very lucky that Goshen was so close to my home and I was able to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that are there. I truly love my alma mater.”

GOSHEN STUDENTS ARE SERIOUS ABOUT MANY THINGS (WORLD PEACE FOR ONE). BUT THEY ALSO KNOW HOW TO KICK BACK AND HAVE SOME FUN. Wander around campus, and you’re likely to get pulled into an Ultimate Frisbee game or invited on a bike ride. You might help Eco-PAX club with a river clean-up project or you may be asked to audition for an upcoming play. Whether you’re an athlete, artist or aspiring entrepreneur, you’ll find that campus life at Goshen is nothing short of inspiring. You’ll discover talents and interests you never knew existed. And you’ll have endless opportunities to strengthen your faith, engage with your community and expand your worldview.

– Benjamin Kelly ’13

At Goshen College, our Christian faith informs every aspect of campus life. You may find that the big moments in your own spiritual journey don’t happen during formal worship, but instead over a meal with friends, during a semester abroad, in the middle of an intense classroom discussion or during coffee with friends at Java Junction, the campus coffee shop.

AT GOSHEN, MAKING PEACE ISN’T JUST ABOUT PROTESTING

IT’S ABOUT FOLLOWING JESUS. WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? We may not know the full answer to that question, but we know some things. We know he would be merciful. We know he would be selfless and seek a peaceful resolution to conflicts. We know he would answer hate with love. At Goshen College, we seek to do the same. Our faith is at the heart of everything we do. It inspires us to have hope, to believe that we can make a positive impact in the world. And as a Mennonite college, we have a long history of making peace as a way of exemplifying the life of Christ.

Through all of our academic programs and cocurricular activities, our students and faculty are working at making peace in all its forms – with God, ourselves and the world. At Goshen, you’ll join a student body of more than 40 different Christian denominations and several world religions. Like Christ, we welcome all who hope to serve the cause of peace. Together, we can make a difference.

Goshen is a nationally recognized, private Christian college affiliated with Mennonite Church USA, a historic peace church. Mennonites believe that violence doesn’t solve problems and can be found rebuilding homes after natural disasters, confronting injustices, reducing international conflicts, working with the poor and caring for the environment.

A PASSION FOR LEARNING

Jair Hernandez CLASS OF 2013 PUBLIC RELATIONS MAJOR GOSHEN, IND.

A NURTURED FAITH: The combination of religious education and the way it is interwoven into the Goshen College education has taught me not only more about my own faith but that of others.

ABOUT SERVICE: “Culture for service” is not just our motto; it really is a virtue that all Goshen college students are taught to strive for.

A GREAT CHOICE: Goshen College was definitely a good choice. Not only did the education give me a leg up in life, but all the hard work of my professors and the Career Services Office helped me land my first job right after college. Not only that, I know that with my experiences at Goshen College, I’ll be ready in the future no matter where I end up going or what I’m doing.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

LIVE YOUR FAITH.

CELEBRATE SERVICE. USING YOUR GOD-GIVEN GIFTS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS is a wonderful way to express your faith – and at Goshen, the call to serve is at the very heart of our campus culture. Throughout the year, students and faculty volunteer in the immediate community, take fall or spring break service trips, build homes with Habitat for Humanity or help abroad, during Study-Service Term. On Celebrate Service Day, first-year students, faculty and staff members work side-by-side assisting the elderly, cleaning up local parks, helping out at area shelters and more.

Faith opportunities include: CATHOLIC STUDENT ASSOCIATION CHAPEL (once per week) DISCIPLESHIP HOUR HYMN CLUB PARABLES TRAVELING WORSHIP TEAM PRAYER WEEK SMALL-GROUP BIBLE STUDY SUMMER MINISTRY INTERNSHIPS TABLE GRACE (food, games and fellowship) TAIZÉ PRAYER SERVICE WORSHIP AND MINISTRY LEADERS

Of course, it’s also important to be able to share your faith with others. On-campus worship opportunities include chapel, Catholic Mass, hymn sings, Taizé prayer service (a candlelight service patterned after the worship of the Taizé community in France) and discipleship hour, where students can get together for creative thought, faith discussion and worship. Many students attend local churches. And many participate in summer internships with churches and faith-based organizations.

Students can major or minor in environmental science. They can go in depth through the Sustainability Leadership Semester or the Agroecology Summer Intensive, both at the college’s 1,189-acre natural preserve 30 miles from campus.

IT’S NOT EASY GOING GREEN.

BUT IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. AT GOSHEN COLLEGE, WE ARE COMMITTED TO ECOLOGICAL STEWARDSHIP, which stems from our Christian faith and the belief that God calls us to care for all of creation. The college’s Ecological Stewardship Committee of students, faculty and administrators is leading the campus in collaborative efforts to encourage sustainable practices and reduce use of fossil fuels. What does that mean?

The college has restored 12 acres of lawn to native landscaping to reduce the use of chemical herbicides and fertilizer, reduce mowing and improve habitat for birds, small mammals and insects. All are encouraged to bike on campus. Solar panels are used to heat water in the Recreation-Fitness Center. And we love our trees. In fact, we have more than 1,100 on our main campus.

For one thing, in the dining hall, our food service provider uses fresh foods, which are tastier – and use 10 times less energy than frozen foods. Our chef uses fresh ingredients from a campus garden. Students convert used fryer oil into bio-diesel. Food waste and napkins are composted. And ecofriendly cleaning supplies are used.

The college has also been successful in energy conservation; today it uses the same amount of electricity as it did in 1992, despite adding 290,000 square feet of building space.

“I joined Eco-PAX (our student environmental club) as a first-year student and people were talking a lot about sustainability; since then I helped create a composting system on campus. It’s been amazing to me how Goshen is willing to work with students to make things happen.” – Hannah Eberly ’13

A PASSION FOR SERVING OTHERS

Hannah Eberly CLASS OF 2013 NURSING MAJOR HARRISONBURG, VA.

ABOUT SERVICE: Service is more often about jumping into another person’s shoes and experiencing their perspective on life than it is about helping. In my participation with Goshen’s summer Inquiry Program, and other service learning activities, I found that I spent most of my energy in learning and gaining insight on different ways of living.

CAMPUS COMMUNITY: Even though Goshen College was 11 hours from my hometown, it felt like home. I spent my first year diving into campus projects and as a result I got to know a variety of faculty and staff who would invite me to eat dinner in their homes and treat me like part of their family.

AFTER GRADUATION: I will be working as a nurse in a hospital in Washington, D.C., and I hope to volunteer as a healthcare worker with some local non-profit organizations. There are so many facets of service that are important to me and Goshen has reinforced those values. At Goshen I was involved with the Ecological Stewardship Committee and the Eco-PAX club, working on sustainability and environmental efforts on campus.

YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

CAN BE A PLACE TO RELAX, LEARN AND GROW. WITH ALL THAT GOES ON IN THE CLASSROOM, IT’S NICE TO HAVE A RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE PLACE TO CALL “HOME.” Goshen offers great housing options for students that include traditional residence halls, apartments and small group houses. Every living space is fully furnished, and each residence hall is staffed with a trained resident adviser. Underclass residence halls have the additional support of a ministry leader, who also lives on site and nurtures the spiritual lives of students. Campus housing is primarily designed for single students enrolled full time and younger than 25. We consider the residential experience a vital

part of the education we have to offer. We believe students who live on campus have the greatest opportunities for learning and growth when residing in close proximity to their peers while having easy access to campus activities, services and facilities. Residence life at Goshen really stands out thanks – in part – to our Commitment to Community Standards, which fosters a strong sense of community and engenders a spirit of hospitality. These guidelines for living ask us to respect ourselves and one another through the choices we make (including that this is an alcohol-free and smoke-free campus).

“We welcome all students as God’s creation regardless of color, gender, religion, ethnicity or nationality, sexual orientation and social or economic class.” – Goshen College Commitment to Community Standards

MAKE ART, MAKE MUSIC

AND MAKE THE BEST FRIENDS OF YOUR LIFE. WHEN YOU LIVE AND LEARN IN A WORLDCHANGING PLACE, GETTING INVOLVED COMES NATURALLY. At Goshen, you can pour your passion into any interest imaginable, from music and theater to athletics and community service – and we have the clubs and co-curricular activities to prove it. You can keep in shape in the RecreationFitness Center or unwind with board games, TV or movies in The Connector (the common area between the Kratz, Yoder and Miller residence halls). And if you need a quick lift, stop by Java Junction, the student-run coffee shop. Regardless, here’s one thing you should know about Goshen students: They love to sing! They sing at

soccer games. They sing during chapel. They sing while walking to classes. And, of course, they sing in any one of the college’s six music ensembles (Chamber Choir, Men’s Chorus and Women’s World Music Choir, to name a few). But if you can’t carry a tune, don’t worry; there are plenty of other ways to get involved. Join the Ecological Stewardship Committee to help the campus “go green.” Play an intramural sport or develop an act for Kickoff, Goshen’s own version of “America’s Got Talent.” Volunteer with a local nonprofit agency or church. Wherever your interests lie, you’ll have no trouble finding a friendly, welcoming group of people to share them with.

Students with literary ambitions can develop their respective voices with The Pinchpenny Press, which publishes chapbooks five times a year, and Broadside, which focuses on poetry. Aspiring journalists and broadcasters will find their outlets in 91.1FM The Globe, the best college station in the nation; The Correspondent, a student-produced television news show; and The Record, Goshen’s weekly student newspaper.

WORLD-CLASS MUSIC CENTER

GOSHEN’S IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE VENUES AROUND. THE ACOUSTICS IN SAUDER CONCERT HALL HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS “BETTER THAN CARNEGIE HALL.” GOSHEN HAS HOSTED PERFORMANCES FROM MANY INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED MUSICIANS, INCLUDING EMMYLOU HARRIS, LOS LOBOS, BOBBY MCFERRIN AND THE ST. PETERSBURG PHILHARMONIC.

A PASSION FOR MUSIC

Emily Trapp CLASS OF 2013 MUSIC MAJOR CANBY, ORE.

MAKING PEACE THROUGH MUSIC: I like that music is a universal language. It’s simple, direct. Anybody who is willing to listen can understand it. Peace building is challenging; after all, it’s bold to put yourself out there and take a stand. Music is bold, too.

CAMPUS COMMUNITY: If you’ve never played Ultimate Frisbee, participated in a jam session on the lawn, stayed up all night watching a marathon of movies or TV shows or spent time along the bike path near campus, don’t worry. You will find all of that and more at Goshen, guaranteed. Even the people who visit campus as prospective students see how our community is different, fresh, energetic and passionate.

GRADUATING FROM GC: As I transition into my graduate studies program in Kansas City, I look back at my time at Goshen like it was gold. I found my diamond in the rugged world out there – the quaint little piece of heaven that is tucked away in northern Indiana waiting for all of us. I wouldn’t be half the person I have become today if it wasn’t for Goshen College, and for that, I am and will always be eternally grateful.
