MORE THAN A CENTURY OF
ENGAGEMENT WITH THE WORLD. AT GOSHEN COLLEGE, GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP IS SIMPLY PART OF OUR EDUCATIONAL AND SPIRITUAL DNA. As early as 1898, our students were packing their bags and heading halfway around the world for mission and famine relief work. In 1903, the college officially adopted the motto “Culture for Service” to proclaim the importance of a college education being used to serve others. And in 1968, Goshen College broke even more new ground, becoming one of the first colleges in the country to include an international education requirement in its core curriculum. As a student here, you’ll find out that “global awareness” isn’t a course you take, or a club you join. It’s how you live. Since 1968, we’ve sent more than 7,600 students to learn and serve in 24 countries worldwide. Our students and faculty are at home any place on the planet. With hope and service, we are striving to heal the world, peace by peace.
Goshen College is home to Study-Service Term (SST), one of the top-ranked study abroad programs in the country, and one of the few that emphasizes service and complete cultural immersion. Eighty percent of our students participate in SST.
A PASSION FOR CONNECTING
Lizzy Diaz CLASS OF 2013 SOCIOLOGY MAJOR GOSHEN, IND.
EGYPT
WHY GOSHEN: I really liked the atmosphere and friendliness of people on campus. I appreciated the Christ-centered and service-leadership values of Goshen. I first thought I wanted to go to a big university, but Goshen is such a welcoming and diverse community. I wouldn’t have been challenged to go outside my comfort zone the way I was here. I had an awesome experience.
GLOBAL EXPERIENCE: I spent a semester in Egypt for my StudyService Term. It was so completely different from what I’d been exposed to. Seeing the interactions and friendships between Christian and Muslim students was inspiring and gave me hope for peace. We are really not that different.
I’M HOPEFUL: That I can use the things I’ve learned to promote good health, which brings peace within a person, within a family, within a community. I would like to see peace. I hope to see countries and cultures find common ground, so they can reach agreements rather than fight.

45 YEARS. 14,000 HOST FAMILIES. 134,600,000 MILES AND
COUNTLESS CHANGED LIVES. WHEN GOSHEN LAUNCHED ITS STUDY-SERVICE TERM PROGRAM, “study abroad” usually meant going somewhere like London, Paris or Rome. But Study-Service Term (SST) took a different approach: It was a semester-long program that sent students not to European capitals, but to developing countries. It also emphasized service to a local community – and total cultural immersion. These days, Study-Service Term is still one of the most cutting edge international education programs in the country. We keep our locations current and constantly develop new service assignments
and unique learning opportunities. In SST, you’re not going to stay in a hotel or residence hall. All students live with local families and experience day-to-day life in the most personal way possible. That focus on intercultural and international understandings and the personal connections you develop will shape the rest of your Goshen College experience, and probably your life, as you prepare to live, serve and work in our complex and deeply interconnected world. You will become a truly global citizen.
LIVE YOUR FAITH. Study-Service Term provides a unique opportunity to not only live your faith through service, but also enrich your cultural understanding – and in doing so deepen your relationship with God.

SINCE 1968, MORE THAN STUDENTS AND 150 FACULTY LEADERS HAVE LEARNED AND SERVED IN COUNTRIES THROUGH OUR STUDY-SERVICE TERM, WHICH ABOUT PERCENT OF STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN – ONE OF THE HIGHEST RATES AMONG 4,000 U.S. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
Through the LATINO STUDIES STUDY-SERVICE TERM PROGRAM, students can become immersed in the local Latino culture for a semester in Northern Indiana and other locations in the Midwest. Students study Spanish, Latino history, literature and culture. They explore other Latino communities and serve in local organizations. And they connect with a Latino family on a regular basis.

STUDY-SERVICE TERM.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE. STUDY-SERVICE TERM (SST) IS A 13-WEEK PROGRAM THAT’S DIVIDED INTO TWO DISTINCT PARTS. During the first half of your journey, you’ll dive headfirst into the local culture – usually in that country’s capital city – with intensive study and language instruction alongside other Goshen College students (and the support of group leaders who are normally a faculty member and his/her spouse). You will take special excursions with your Goshen classmates (for example, in Peru, exploring Machu Picchu or in Cambodia the Angkor ruins). You will also be immersed in the local culture and lifestyle. And you will stay with a local family whose members will eagerly share their home along with delicious meals and unforgettable stories. For the second leg of your journey, you and your classmates will spread out, usually moving to a more remote, rural area in groups of two or three. Here you’ll meet your second host family and begin work on your service project.
Volunteer projects are designed to deliver a real, measurable contribution to the host community, and on occasion may even align with your academic course of study. You might live with indigenous people and teach English, teach sign language in Peru or learn how eco-tourism can improve everyday life in Tanzania. Regardless of the country you select, expect to be transformed. Often our SSTers say that their hosts give them far more than they feel they are offering in return – through kindness, acceptance, laughter and generosity. SST also provides a unique opportunity to grow spiritually by building meaningful relationships with people who are different than you, responding through service to the great needs of the world and being pushed beyond your comfort zone to ask meaningful questions that might change your life forever.
An “international” education is more affordable than you might think. Close to 99 percent of full-time GC students receive some sort of financial aid, with the average package totaling $21,218. The cost for Study-Service Term in Nicaragua and Latino Studies in the Midwest is the same as a regular semester on the Goshen campus. Other locations have some additional costs.
A PASSION FOR CARING
Lauren Treiber CLASS OF 2014 PEACE, JUSTICE AND CONFLICT STUDIES MAJOR GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. WHY GOSHEN: I come from outside of the Mennonite church, but I really wanted a peace studies program. When I heard about Goshen and checked out the core values, I was utterly stunned. I expected to have to go to a huge university and seek out my niche, but Goshen has everything I wanted and it felt perfect.
CAMBODIA
CAMPUS EXPERIENCE: As a PJCS major, I am tugged towards caring for those who suffer some of life’s most extreme traumas. As a student of writing, I strive to arrange words in such a way that someone else’s soul might be moved. As a member of choir and theater groups, I sense the strength in telling truth through sound, movement, genuine presentation and interaction with others.
I’M HOPEFUL: It matters less to me what I do. What’s important is how I learned to do it. From Goshen, I’m going to graduate with more than a degree; I’m going to graduate with a better understanding of the world. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
