Dear Readers, What is the recipe for success? „Know more than the others”, a famous businessman, Aristotle Onasis once said. If you have started reading this magazine, it means that you want to know more to achieve success. The place where you have reached for it proves that the fair is one of the most important sources of information for you. That is why, you will probably read about the fairs which are worth to visit in this edition of the magazine. Before you visit the stands of the exhibitors, I recommend to become familiar with the interior fittings trends prepared by leading fair organizations
from all over the world. If you like getting to know new countries, interesting designers, products and fair events, then I would like to invite you to read the articles in “Focus Poland” section. According to the statistics by AUMA (Association of the German Trade Fair Industry) becoming familiar with new products and technologies is one of the main reasons for visiting fairs. So how to sell these products now? When looking for new inspirations it is worth to get to know the secrets of success of the most innovative interior fittings industry shops –
the winners of Global Innovation Awards competition, organized by International Home & Housewares Association from Chicago. You will get to know two of them on the pages of this edition of Ambiente International magazine. I wish you an interesting, successful year 2019.

QUIET SURROUNDINGS Simply beautiful: natural, simple and useful products satisfy a yearning for calm and honesty. They create in soft colours unpretentious havens for an everyday life free from stress. Respect for materials and creativity in the use made of them are of great importance here. Plain products that are close to nature, soft colours and respect for the original material create a natural environment that is ideal for anyone longing for a stress-free daily life that is full of peace and tranquillity. Natural materials such as wool, silk, hemp, wood, stone, clay and ceramics are combined. There is joy in experimenting and in applying traditional craft techniques. Recycling often plays a role.
JOY-FILLED AMBIENCE
A happy, colourful trend world with bold combinations of colours and the charm of randomness: Diverse materials, an eccentric mix of patterns. TRENDS
Heimtextil trends for 2019/20 The 21st century presents us with diverse challenges, with the mega topic, sustainability, continuing to occupy our minds. In response, we look for ways toward a new utopia - a society that respects every single person and their environment, and builds on individual responsibility, positive actions and optimism. Ask yourself the question: "What is my utopia?" Experience five interactive scenarios for future living concepts at Heimtextil 2019: we invite you to take delight in the playful PURSUE PLAY scenario, to find refuge from the hectic pace of modern life with SEEK SANCTUARY, to disappear from the screen and the web and take on new challenges with OFF-GRID, to escape into a digital universe with ESCAPE REALITY, and to rethink your attitude to luxury with EMBRACE INDULGENCE.

PURSUE PLAY In an era of uncertainty, political instability and environmental problems, we satisfy our need for optimism and creativity with play. Playing helps us to find meaning in the midst of chaos and turbulent times. Designers thus playfully focus on uninhibited, tactile interactions and experiments. Daring, cheeky product, room and fashion designs are loosened up with a touch of humour. Shapes and colour palettes take on a surrealistic note and the concept of L’art pour l’art once again commands attention. The use of rich primary colours is playful and naive, while the combination of high-gloss and matt textures creates a palatable visual appeal. Abstract forms, bold play with patterns and exuberant textures challenge us to be imaginative and invent our own stories.

TRENDS
EMBRACE INDULGENCE High-quality materials and rich colours, a modernist style and solid craftsmanship combine to form a utopian vision of the future of luxury. In a modern age marked by uncertainty, we look back through rose-tinted glasses to earlier epochs, remember the comfort of the good old days, long for security and surround ourselves with a calm, inviting aesthetic. Cleverly combined, honest materials, creatively implemented ideas and simple opulence form a new kind of comfort as well as give rise to intimacy and a sense of tangibleness.

SEEK SANCTUARY In the midst of our intense, hyper-connected everyday life, more and more people are looking for ways to “cut off” all connections – for utopian havens of peace amidst all the noise. They retreat to urban oases where they can switch off to find relaxation, a new perspective and clarity. However, this essentialism does not mean that we have to categorically reject products. Rather, is it about the targeted search for and appreciation of design pieces and concepts that are simple, beautiful, functional and high quality. The combination of a minimalist colour palette with carefully selected structural details, curvy shapes and upholstery gives rise to comfort and warmth.

TRENDS
GO OFF-GRID The search for a new closeness to nature leads to a hankering for experiences beyond a networked everyday life. It is an attempt to live more naturally, to return to the origins of humanity and to live in harmony with nature – and not against it. It is about cross-border experiences in remote locations, supported by high-tech survival equipment. The combination of hard-wearing technical aspects of outdoor textiles and workwear requires a sophisticated, utilitarian aesthetic and promises durability and functionality. Colours and patterns inspired by nature celebrate the supposed “imperfection” of the natural.
Go off ecocapsule-holding-heimtextil-trend-book
ESCAPE REALITY A new utopia can be rooted in both the digital and the real. The potential of virtual and extended reality blurs the boundaries between fantasy and reality. We are working on a technology that enables deeper and more lasting experiences in daily life. Shimmering, iridescent surfaces have a transformative and optimistic quality, are transformed by movement and create a fleeting, intangible form of motion. Mother-of-pearl effects and high gloss create a unique dynamic in designs that seem to achieve the impossible by appearing fluid and in suspension as a solid form that could literally dissolve at any time. Ethereal combinations of light pastel shades create a surrealistic, hyper-real mood.

The 13th edition of the Interior Design Forum, one of the most important events for the textile industry in Poland and the only business fair in our country entirely dedicated to interior textiles, including the contract ones, took place in Warsaw on 6th September 2018. This autumn, the event was organized in the industrial atmosphere of Praga Koneser Center for the first time.
The best producers and importers of household and facilities textiles both from Poland and abroad presented their offers during Interior Design Forum fair. Representatives of shops with interior fittings, window decoration studios, retail networks, hotels and restaurants, as well as designers and architects could become familiar with window coverings novelties (from net curtains, roller blinds, up to curtain rods), table, bedrooms and bathrooms arrangements. What is more, they could search for something special for their clients, choosing from the range of upholstery fabrics and wallpaper offers. The September edition of the fair took place in a new venue for the first time –industrial, revitalized interiors of Praga Koneser Center. The change of location was very well received by the exhibitors and the guests. Trendy, loft atmosphere harmonized with designer collections presented at the stalls.
The fair was accompanied by wide range of lectures selection which attracted an impressive number of listeners. The seminars were organized in two thematic blocks. The first cycle of lectures was devoted to the means of increasing the sales of interior fittings goods on the Internet. Robert Sosnowski, managing director of Biuro Podróży Reklamy talked about the cooperation of interior brands with influencers and about how to take advantage of social media potential. Oliwia Droździk, online marketing specialist of Shoper company, delivered a lecture entitled: „Sell or inspire? E-commerce trends in interior design industry”.

Manufaktura in Bolesławiec celebrates its 25th anniversary In 2018, Manufaktura in Bolesławiec celebrated its 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century is the time when it became one of the leading producers of Bolesławiec ceramics and developed the tradition of hand-made and decorated dishes, combining it with the ideas of contemporary artists and designers. This jubilee was an opportunity to present new collections at the Ambiente Frankfurt exhibition (hall 5.1, stand D81). "Flower Line" perpetuates the fleeting beauty of flowers from Polish gardens, fields and meadows. The floral theme - rose - also adorns the original collection of Magda Gazur "Roses." The latest proposals are Bartek Mejor's ceramic lamps - combining a modern form with traditional, hand-stamped decorations. The 25th is also the beginning of even more intensive activities of Manufaktura in Bolesławiec regarding the promotion and popularization of the ceramic tradition. In Bolesławiec, a special ceramic workshop is created in the company's headquarters, where guests will be able to learn about the history of Bolesławiec ceramics and try to create and decorate it themselves.

A family glassmaking business from Poland is conquering the foreign market of glass products This family business stems from true honest love for glass. A successful combination of tradition and modernity. More than 40 years of experience in creating outstanding glass products. Reliability, high quality, exible approach to the customer. Such words can best describe the Polish glass manufacturer. If something is born out of true passion, it simply has to be successful. This can be seen on the example of Edwanex, a glass factory, which has been prospering well on the market for nearly four decades. Edward Wąsikowski, the founder of the company, made his first steps in the industry at the age of 14. He dreamed of having his own glass business, and then proved that such dreams can be fulfilled. Years later, he shared the passion with his son, Daniel. Now, this duo is trying to show others that glass is really charming and timeless. Edwanex glassworks specializes in glass bottles, decanters, tableware, and decorative glass products. In addition to pressed and mechanically produced glass, there is still space for handmade glass that requires a lot of precision and experience from craftsmen.

FOCUS POLAND
- We want to get across to the lovers of design and beautiful glass - says Daniel WÄ…sikowski. - We want to inspire, amaze, and show trends. Let's not forget that glass making is an art form. Me and my family are happy to share it with others. What else distinguishes the glass factory? Great care for high quality and safety. The glass produced by Edwanex will find space in every kitchen, as it is safe for contact with food and beverages. In addition, the WÄ…sikowski family creatively combine traditional solutions with a flexible approach and the requirements of modernity. Each client gets exactly what they want : from the design, to the prototype, glass product, decoration, and complex logistics. Just come with a preliminary outline, and Edwanex will take care of the rest. No wonder that cooperation with international corporate clients flourishes in this company. A large part of the production enters the foreign market, even such distant places as the USA or Japan. And this is definitely not the end of the development of this family-owned company.

Manufaktura in Bolesławiec "Roses" - is the original collection of Magda Gazur maintained in the colors of white and red, that rediscovers the queen of flowers as a decorative motif to show her in a modern, artistic version. The author of the collection showed a rose as a modern pattern, combining two types of decorations in her vessels: brush painting and stamping, and two types of surface finishing: matt and glazed. Hand-applied patterns give the vessels a unique character, because each of them is unrepeatable.
Julia Glassware Linea, one of the historic patterns of the glassware, has gained a new version, with intensely tempting colors - Linea Kolor. Vessels in colors of ruby, emerald and topaz are a reference to classic colors of colored crystal. These fashionable colors match perfectly with the simple cut pattern.
Cmielów Design Studio The System is a new set of table porcelain, representing contemporary design that expresses the aesthetics of the 21st century. Guided by the requirements of an experienced group of consumers, the System’s service is a response and proposition in the landscape of contemporary table, adding new aesthetic values of the applied arts. RETAIL IN THE WORLD
In today’s technology-driven world, where so much of life is lived online, and there’s a distinct lack of human contact and social context, it’s refreshing to come across businesses that still take pride in producing high-quality products that also come with the story of the creator who produced them. Manufactum from Germany has its roots firmly planted in the real world, making it an attractive prospect for people in search of pieces for their lives that are not merely products that were born from a passing trend or a new idea. Instead, Manufactum stocks products that mean something, and just as importantly, that are made to last. The product offering at Manufactum is as expansive as it is diverse — gardening tools, sports equipment, toys (for young and old), office supplies, kitchen tools,

housewares and body care to name just some categories — and all products seamlessly blend form and function. Manufactum also encourages customers to meet the creators of its products, to learn about how and why they came to be. In other words, every product stocked at Manufactum has a story, and the store itself has a story that binds the products together. Customers are free to wander around, browse the selections and get inspired, especially at the many events held at Manufactum’s focus point: the workbench. That’s where the magic happens, as customers can see designer-makers at work, and learn about products before they purchase them. “Our retail concept stems from the notion that products, even everyday items, have been turned from long-term companions into fashionable consumer goods

that are not built to last, but rather to be replaced with the next fashion fad,” says Kadir Dogan, Head of Marketing. “Besides their snazzy looks, these items often fail to perform, especially when they are used repeatedly in daily routines. Manufactum searches for functional, reliable and repairable products; and responsible, sustainable and socially equitable manufacturing is our focus.” It’s fitting that the latest Manufactum store is housed in a place with history and heritage at its heart, and one that is also crafted from old materials. It opened in 2016, and it’s nestled in the heart of Bremen’s old town, in a historical building that was formerly the Bremen City Bank. This stunning building was erected around 1902 as a typical example of Renaissance Revival architecture. Customers enter the building by several entrances, including a grand hall under a breath-taking stained-glass roof. Monumental columns punctuate the hall, and the floor was crafted from intricate, handmade designs of marble and wood. Modern lighting solutions showcase the 8,000 or more products on display in the 750 m2 (8,072 ft2) space. The lighting combines perfectly with the choice of old-world décor and a setting so rich in history, a warm, even subtle scene is created. With the white walls
and complementary dark hues in the woodwork, products are presented like precious gems in a museum. This again demonstrates to customers that pieces are all chosen with care, and that they are products to be treasured. “Our location is in line with Manufactum’s philosophy,” says Kadir. “In addition to the presentation of our goods, our stores provide customers the opportunity to touch, feel and hold our products. This gives customers the story behind them, and also offers further information about their usage and maintenance in everyday life.” Like reading a story, guests can literally follow their interests from one themed assortment of products to the next, and they can take a break in the cozy 130-seater bistro. Just like a café in an art gallery or a museum, it’s a perfect place for visitors to reflect upon what they’ve seen and what they might like to take home. Sampling, tasting and trying is all a part of an experience at Manufactum. “At Manufactum, you just need to take a closer look to realize: there is more about this place than just the product. It is about attitudes and perception,” says Kadir. “Everyday life is often underrated and unjustly has such a poor image, but in the end, a large part of our life happens in the everyday world. Therefore, it is our mission, our passion, to find exceptional goods for everyday usage, to discover their story and to share this knowledge with our customers. We encourage customers to make conscious choices and to experience joy in their daily routine. This way, we became a pioneer in sustainability and conscious consumption.” Although the physical experience of visiting Manufactum is both inspirational and aspirational, and it embraces an old-worldly feel in the bricks and mor-

tar stores, the business is impressively active online — with almost 60,000 FB followers and over 14,000 followers on Instragram. The online shop is a beautifully, cleanly designed reflection of Manufactum’s philosophy and style, offering those who visit it an immersive experience that highlights the dedication that the company has to showcasing the creators of its products. by Michelle Hespe

RETAIL IN THE WORLD
Nick and Anke Pollmann, the fourth-generation owners of Pollmann sinds 1890, raised a glass to Nick’s great grandfather, Bernhard Pollmann, at the IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) in Chicago this year, to celebrate the store being announced as one of the five best retail stores in the world. Bernhard opened Pollmann sinds 1890 128 years ago, launching it as a tableware store. Today, the store has evolved into being an omni-channel business, with a catch-cry that sums up the company’s long-held grounding philosophy: “Great home-cooked meals, thanks to Pollmann.”
In 2016, having outgrown its former premises (where the store was based for 76 years) Pollmann sinds 1890 dug up its roots and moved to a more modern and easy to access, light-filled tunnel-shaped space that loyal customers flock to today, for the same reason that they have always gone to Pollmann: to cook great meals.
40 | 2019
“After operating from the same building for 76 years, the relocation of our business was the result of wanting to respond to change, with the focus always being on our customers’ needs,” explains Anke. “The world is changing, and we have to be flexible and adapt alongside our customers. Consumers are asking for different things compared to what they once did, and you have to be agile to survive in retail today. We are always growing, learning, and adapting.”
RETAIL IN THE WORLD
The new premises is equipped with the latest technology and clever modern lighting arrangements to showcase an impressive array of cooking products — Pollmann stocks the largest collection of tableware and cutlery in the Netherlands and prides itself on having top quality products, including many that are a surprise to the customer, as the Pollmann team is always seeking out new pieces and fresh innovation. Inspiration for the design of the store was drawn from Chicago’s Eataly and Anthropology (both must-see inspiring destination stores) and from New York’s Meat Packing district, which is renowned for its chic industrial beauty and the locals’ mission of keeping the area’s rich heritage alive. Interior designer Fons Kooymans was responsible for the layout indoors, and the Pollmanns’ goal was to retain the history of the building while transforming it into a superb retail environment for the 21st century. The new store is raw, authentic and industrial, and it displays great respect for the company's history. “Pollmann has created a very bohemian, edgy store that
has a great attitude, a genuine story, and a strong, unique identity,” one of the gia judges commented. “One word says it all: Wow! Everything is right about this business — from the modern marketing to the clear choice of an omni-channel strategy, and the focus on retaining social relevance. At a time when many shops struggle to survive, 'Pollmann sinds 1890' is a luminous example of how to turn a future-proof idea for home cooking into a wonderful experience!” All of these factors contribute to an amazing shopping experience. However, one of the main reasons that people shop with Pollmann, says Anke, is for the personal experience. This is something about the business that in 128 years has never changed. “Customers come here for the people,” says Anke. “We are a shop for advice. A shop where you can touch and sample things and compare products. Our
customers feel a part of a community, and they also know that they can speak to someone that they know, from the comfort of their own home, and then we deliver the products to them, and they know how to use them. If they don’t, they can call us, and we can talk them through what they need to do.”

Additional information on the gia program is also available online at www.housewares.org/show/gia-retail.
Pollmann has a permanent core team of six passionate staff, and it’s obvious to customers that all of them love their job. Anke and Nick ensure that everyone on their team understands everything about the business. “Our core team has been intensively involved in the process of change that we went through in the past two years, meaning that they came with us for the journey and learned alongside us,” says Nick. Employees also join Anke and Nick on trips to trade fairs so that they are also aware of changes in the industry, innovations, new products and new information than can be gained from expert talks and seminars. This focus on taking care of staff and always offering them in-store education has meant that the team is pulling in the one direction. They are united in their goal to ensure that Pollmann continues to succeed, and yet they don’t want to grow into a retail giant. Pollmann’s marketing and use of modern technology is something that has been so seamlessly integrated into the business that the store’s heritage is not at odds with the future. In fact, this well-considered fusion of the past and the present is what gives Pollmann some of its edge, and it certainly contributes to its success. The company collaborates closely with vloggers and bloggers to communicate with customers, sharing news of new products, upcoming events and activities in-store. There’s also an online chat platform for customers to talk to employees about products and their needs, and one of the things that customers love the most is that the products are quickly

delivered to their door. That’s a huge time-saver for people leading busy lives, and also a blessing for those who might not be as mobile as they once were. Pollmann sinds 1890 is a true survivor. Not many people know that the original store was bombed in World War II, and it had to be completely created again from the ground up. That didn’t stop Nick’s great grandfather, and it’s obvious that the current Pollmanns are just as resilient. They embrace change and challenges as opportunities, and this puts them in good stead to not simply survive in the modern retail landscape, but to thrive. by Michelle Hespe
