“Best restaurant for impressing outof-towners was tricky. So many great chefs with so many great dining concepts make it hard enough to choose a restaurant for myself, much less guests.”
Here are the categories that were hardest for us to decide.

Among a million assignments, one of my favorites took me to the kitchen of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in the Central West End. There I found devoted parishioners mixing, baking and boxing thousands of cookies for the annual Labor Day Greek Festival, a must-visit event for my family. After telling the cooks, some born in Greece, how I favor the festival’s version of koulourakia, Greece’s not-so-sweet dunking cookie, they taught me how to roll a batch and then sent me home with a box to share with my children. British artist Andy Goldsworthy makes ephemeral sculptures of twigs, rocks and snow. But for this site-specific work, Goldsworthy used 325,000 pounds of Missouri limestone to build 25 self-supporting arches, a virtual heaving sea of ancient waves. The real genius of “Stone Sea” is its location, in a sunken courtyard at the St. Louis Art Museum’s south entrance. Why limit this to St. Louis? How about the most distinctive theater in the country? There is nothing, and I mean nothing, like the Muny. With more than 10,000 outdoor seats in the middle of a park that itself is a civic treasure, the Muny is the most democratic theater around — and the reason that other musical theaters, including edgy adventurers such as New Line and Stray Dog, can thrive here. The Muny turned St. Louisans into a sophisticated audience for musical theater, and it did it staging virtually everything itself, without tour shows that also play other cities. It’s the first theater most of us go to, and the one that defines summer in St. Louis all our lives. JN Readers’ choice ➙ Fox Theatre

MARY WICKES
It’s often mistaken for an innocent musical, but “Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944) is a trolley ride into the dark heart of the American nightmare. Its pint-size protagonist is one of the most adorably evil characters in American film: 5-year-old Tootie (Margaret O’Brien). She guzzles hootch with an old man in an ice wagon, ritually murders a German immigrant on Halloween and sabotages her own family with roller skates on the stairs. After her father announces that he is uprooting the family before they can experience the bacchanal of the 1904 World’s Fair, Tootie decapitates the snow effigy that represents him. The father is so intimidated by this ritual patricide that he cancels the move. Tootie’s
St. Louis has been a gateway to Hollywood since the silent era, when Missourian Wallace Reid was a matinee idol whose popularity rivaled Valentino’s. The list of stars with St. Louis connections ranges from Betty Grable and Shelly Winters to Kevin Kline and John Goodman. But we hereby raise a local toast to Mary Wickes, a venerable character actress who often played nosy nurses and henny-penny housekeepers (like the one she played in “White Christmas”). As documented in Steve Taravella’s new bio “Mary Wickes: I Know I’ve Seen That Face Before,” she was Lucille Ball’s best friend — and comic equal. JW Readers’ choice ➙ John Goodman

A recent success story is the renovation of the pastoral 19 Drive-in in Cuba, Mo., which has a newfangled digital projector to complement the old speakers. But the most idyllic drive-in in all of America is the Sky View in Litchfield, Ill. Sidney Street Cafe’s beautiful Benton Park building is a quintessential St. Louis structure. How romantic is Bar Les Frères? You might depart Zoë Robinson Pidgeon’s tiny French restaurant in Clayton an engaged man or woman without even having plans to propose. The cozy atmosphere, the delicious food (especially the lobster bisque!), the way your beloved looks in the soft, dim lighting: The only way you could improve the scenario is to fly to Paris. Thankfully, Clayton is closer, even if the parking is a pain. IF Readers’ choice ➙ Tony’s
