Welcome to Summer, St. Louis! As summertime approaches, the possibilities for relaxation and fun seem practically endless — and so will those unbearably hot St. Louis days. But as we know too well, the best season of the year will be over before we know it. • So what are you waiting for? It’s time to make a plan for spending those long days as wisely as possible. • And we’re here to help, with our annual Summer Fun Guide, a special issue of Go! After you eat, roll yourself over to the agricultural exhibits or watch Sammy Hagar, Rascal Flatts and 38 Special, among other performers. But maybe wait a while before riding the Tilt-a-Whirl.

July Fourth As construction continues at the Arch, Fair St. Louis returns for a second year in Forest Park with a variety of music acts, dramatic fireworks displays and something new: zip lining. • The zip line will run along Lagoon Drive at the base of the Grand Basin each day of the festival. This year, the fair’s Family Festival Zone has an educational emphasis with many hands-on activities. Kids can make 3-D glasses to view the park, create fireworks in a tube and learn about rockets. • The music lineup features country acts Natalie Stovall and the Drive, Parmalee and Chris Young on July 2; rock stars Blondie and Melissa Etheridge on July 3; and R&B/pop acts Morris Day and the Time and Kool & the Gang on July 4. • And the Veiled Prophet Parade will again roll through Forest Park on July 4. • Many municipalities have Fourth of July events; here are some of the biggest. Insight Theatre Company

Metro Theater Company

This season, Insight touches all the theatrical bases: musical, comedy, drama. It opens with the dreamy show that gave us the lovely song “Try to Remember,” “The Fantasticks” (July 2-18). Ken Ludwig’s backstage comedy “Moon Over Buffalo” (July 24-Aug. 9) comes next. It all winds up with Rebecca Gilman’s drama about a professor dealing with racial tension on campus, “Spinning Into Butter” (Aug. 27-Sept. 13). Plus, student interns will mount “Alice in Wonderland” (Aug. 14-16).

In “The Boy Who Loved Monsters and the Girl Who Loved Peas” (June 12-22), a little boy and his baby sister are surprised when Pea, a 6-foot-tall green creature, moves in with them. Pea is a lot of fun — but what does he like to eat? Metro recommends the show for theatergoers who are at least 5 years old.

If you’re looking for offbeat places to see movies this summer, the sky’s the limit. Literally. While the multiplexes will be packed with comic-book geeks for the latest superhero flicks, drive-ins and other outdoor venues will offer a fresh whiff of nostalgia. By Joe Williams

It’s OK to cool off inside a multiplex this summer, but don’t forget about the driveins. In the late ’50s, there were more than 4,000 “ozonersâ€? in America, as well as driveins in Canada and Australia. Suburban development and other factors eroded that number, but about 300 of the remaining outdoor theaters survived last year’s transition to digital projection, including five within 100 miles of St. Louis. At the end of the 2013 season, the twin-screen Starlite on Highway 21 in Cadet, Mo., won a free projector in a contest sponsored by Honda. So like the 19 in Cuba, Mo., the Skyview in Belleville, the Sky View in Litchfield, Ill. and the Route 66 in Springfield, Ill., it can continue to offer cinema under the stars for generations to come. • Skyview Drive-In: 5700 North Belt West, Belleville, 618-2334400, skyview-drive-in.com

• Sky View Drive-In: North Route 66, Litchfield, Ill., 217-3244451, litchfieldskyview.com • Route 66 Twin Drive-In: 1700 Recreation Drive, Springfield, Ill., 217-698-0066, route66-drivein.com • 19 Drive-In: 5853 Highway 19, Cuba, Mo., 573-885-7752, 19drivein.com • Starlite Drive-In: 15605 North State Highway 21, Cadet, Mo., 573438-4974, starlitedrivein.com

Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream

Mint chip ice cream at Ices Plain & Fancy

Frozen treats

photo : rob e rto rodr i g u e z / f i l e ( i c e s pla i n & fanc y ) ; post- d i spatch f i l e ( sno b i z )

Yes, it gets hot in St. Louis in the summer. And sticky. And kind of gross. • But isn’t using the weather as a reason to head for a dish or cone of ice cream really just an excuse? The weather has nothing to do with it. Just check out the lines outside a frozen custard stand in December. In the snow. • The truth is, we love ice cream and other frozen treats simply because they are so darned good. And in this particular region, we definitely have some of the best. • It’s hard to play favorites among places to get ice cream around here because so many places are at the very top of their games. We can only pick a handful of what we consider to be the (ice) crème de la (ice) crème. By Daniel Neman

Ices Plain & Fancy Some of the coolest ice cream you will ever have is also some of the coldest. They make it to order, while you watch, by mixing the ingredients with liquid nitrogen. Whoa. Science. It would be amazing even if it didn’t taste so good. They also have soft serve, sorbet and vegan offerings. WHERE 2256 South 39th Street • WHEN 2-10 p.m. Wednesday-Friday; noon-11 p.m. Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday • MORE INFO 314-6013604; icesplainandfancy.com

Mr. Wizards Frozen Custard and Yogurt Frozen custard comes from more than one source in this town, including this longstanding Maplewood favorite that has been packing ’em in for more than 30 years. You know the drill: frozen custard, frozen yogurt, concretes, sundaes, cones, sno-cups, slushies and more. Now with a second location in Affton. WHERE 2101 South Big Bend Boulevard, Maplewood; 8411 Gravois Road, Affton • WHEN noon-10:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday; noon-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday • MORE INFO

Made fresh daily, the ice cream dished up by Serendipity is some of the best in town — and comes in some of the most inventive flavors. Cantaloupe, chocolate peanut butter and even gooey butter cakeflavored ice cream — they make them all, but the flavors change every day. It’s also served in area restaurants and at the Fox Theatre. WHERE 8130 Big Bend Boulevard, Webster Groves • WHEN 11-10 p.m. daily • MORE INFO 314-962-2700; serendipity-icecream.com

Sno Biz O’Fallon Yes, it’s a franchise, but have you seen the lines? The crowds don’t just come for the dozens of unusual snow-cone flavors and flavor combinations; they come for the shaved ice (or “shave” ice) that is silky and smooth, creating a luscious mouthfeel. Pssst: The South County location and building are for sale. WHERE 231 O’Fallon Plaza, O’Fallon, Mo. • WHEN 3-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 3-9:30 p.m. Friday; 1-9:30 p.m. Saturday; 1-9 p.m. Sunday • MORE INFO 314-6169578; facebook.com/snobizofallon

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard Remember what we said about long lines even in December? Since 1929, Ted Drewes has been the area’s best-known frozen delight. Forest Park

Last summer, the Parks and Recreation Department partnered with Great Rivers Greenway to create a six-mile Creve Coeur Water Trail. Paddle across the park’s 320-acre lake and through the creek at its south end to Mallard Lake. Markers point out sites such as waterfalls, animal habitats and nature’s foliage.

Looking for something new at an old favorite? Pick up “Forest Park Statues and Monuments” at the Visitors Center. Choose one of its 23 landmarks and go on a hunt: St. Francis of Assisi overlooks the reflecting pool near the Jewel Box; “Joie de Vivre” brings abstract exuberance to the Steinberg Skating Rink; and the Friedrich John Memorial celebrates the father of gymnastics. Who knew?

Endangered Wolf Center After a PredaTour introduces you to the survival challenges of Mexican gray wolves, red wolves, swift foxes and African painted dogs, you can sign up for a new 30-minute “enrichment experience.” Learn how the care team treats injured wolves, or work alongside keepers as they feed the animals.

For all our Clydesdales, butterflies and endangered wolves, St. Louis has been missing out the past few years on a particularly popular lumbering behemoth. • But the polar bears are coming back! • The zoo has been working since 2013 on a new facility for the white Arctic giants, and Polar Bear Point is set to open this summer. Visitors can walk through a cave, going nose-to-nose with the bears as they swim and play. An orphaned Alaska polar bear named Kali will be the exhibit’s first resident. • He’ll join the abundance of animals that already call our region home. By Colleen Schrappen

Audubon Center at Riverlands Along the Riverlands’ eight miles of trails are numerous viewing platforms and bird blinds for amateur ornithologists. Lone Elk County Park The park’s multitude of elk, bison, wild turkeys and deer are easy to spot from its three hiking trails. Pack a picnic and plan a visit to the nearby World Bird Sanctuary, Castlewood State Park or Meramec River bluffs to round out a very outdoorsy day.

The heated pool at Big Cedar Lodge in Branson, Mo.

Road trips A great vacation may be just a few hours’ drive from St. Louis. Here are a few of our favorites. By Amy Bertrand

Branson, Mo. This summer, Silver Dollar City opens its new Firemen’s Landing with six new rides (mostly for younger kids) and four interactive play zones (the ball pit is fun for all ages). Don’t miss new Branson shows “Million Dollar Quartet,” a musical, and “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a dance show, and returning ones such as SIX, Pierce Arrow and the supertalented Revollusionists.

Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, just opened Top of the Rock next to Big Cedar Lodge, an upscale area with restaurants, an Ozarks museum, golf, and a tour of area caves and waterfalls. Branson visitors will also find fun on the gorgeous Table Rock Lake, and Chateau on the Lake has some of the best views of the sunset at their Chateau Grille restaurant. More info explorebranson.com

Chicago

Jefferson City

You know Chicago as the home of Wrigley Field and great museums such as the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium and the Museum of Science and Industry. But Chicago in the summer also means great beaches and a chance to catch some exciting festivals, such as the free Chicago Blues Festival (June 12-14), the nation’s only free, outdoor classical music series of its kind (Grant Park Music Festival, June 17 to Aug. 22) and mega music fest Lollapalooza (July 31-Aug. 2). And don’t miss the Navy Pier fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday night through Sept. 5.

Full of learning opportunities for young and old with an anachronistic downtown of charming shops and historic buildings, Jefferson City offers a simple getaway just two hours west of St. Louis. Take a one-hour tour of the state Capitol building and the Missouri State Museum inside. Tour the governor’s mansion and the Carnahan Memorial Garden, or take a hike on the Katy Trail. And don’t miss the tours at the Missouri State Penitentiary.

Museum, the American Jazz Museum and Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Great for kids are the Legoland Discovery Center and the Sea Life Aquarium. Take a trip to the Kansas side, where you’ll find the Sporting KC soccer stadium, the Kansas Speedway, the Schlitterbahn water park (featuring the world’s tallest waterslide), the T-Rex Cafe and the Great Wolf Lodge, all within a few blocks of one another.

tions are underway at Tan-Tar-A and Lodge of the Four Seasons, so even if you’ve been there before, it may seem new to you. The golf-centered Lodge at Old Kinderhook opened earlier this year. And don’t miss Pickle Head’s Road House, a concert and event center, which is adding a zip line, the “Slick Pickle,” this summer.

Lake of the Ozarks The Lake of the Ozarks is the Midwest’s top lake vacation destination, offering boating, golfing, shopping and fishing. One of the most musical cities in the country, Memphis helped create the sound of the ’50s and ’60s and is still making music today. Nashville, Tenn. From the honky-tonks that line the city’s touristy Broadway to the guitar of Hank Williams Sr. at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, this city screams music. But in addition to the Grand Ole Opry and Music Row, you’ll also find a zoo, zip lining and a full-scale reproduction of the ancient Parthenon in Athens, Greece. Once you’ve hit all those, consider a trip across the Cumberland River to Nashville’s hippest neighborhood, East Nashville, where you can easily spend a day or more sampling boutiques, restaurants, brewpubs and clubs. There are too many fun spots to list them all, but a good place to start is the pedestrian-friendly Five Points neighborhood. Here, grab a hot dog at I Dream of Weenie, run out of an old Volkswagen bus, or visit Pied Piper Creamery, where a signature flavor is Trailer Trash — vanilla ice cream with Oreo, Twix, Butterfinger, Nestlé Crunch, Snickers, M&Ms and Reese’s Pieces. New Haven, Mo.

Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

Just an hour and a half west, you’ll find a hidden retreat in New Haven. Stay at the lovely Cedar Creek, once the family retreat of the Vatterotts, now a resort with restaurants, a brewery and saloon, along with a nine-hole golf course, tennis, sand volleyball, a swimming pool, a ropes course, two hiking trails and an outdoor area for concerts. The town itself is also undergoing a renaissance. You’ll find Astral Glass studio, with its art-blowing demonstrations, a ukulele maker, several antiques shops and Pinckney Bend Distillery.

Just an hour down Interstate 55, you’ll find wine country perfect for a weekend getaway. Amid rolling hills (and great hiking at Pickle Springs Natural Area), you’ll find vineyards and upscale wineries. Try the villas and upscale dining at Chaumette for a perfect girls getaway, or have a good time at Crown Valley or the beautiful Weingarten Vineyard. While you’re in Ste. Gen, visit the tigers at the Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary, and head downtown for antiques shops, museums, art and historic homes. More info visitstegen.com

Paducah, Ky. If you’re looking for an arts getaway, head to Paducah, Ky., just three hours from St. Louis. Stroll historic downtown and LowerTown to see galleries and artists at work. Have beers at the city’s first craft brewers, the new Paducah Beer Werks and Dry Ground Brewing Co. (in an old Coca-Cola bottling plant). And the National Quilt Museum doesn’t disappoint. It’s worth a visit just to see Fraser Smith’s “Floating,” a sculpture of a quilt carved from wood. If you’re staying a night or two, unpack your bags at the funky 1857 B&B on Market House Square. Springfield, Ill. Learn about the life of our nation’s 16th president at a variety of sites, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln-Herndon Law Office, and the tomb where Lincoln, his wife and sons are buried. This summer, the museum celebrates its 10th anniversary and the nation commemorates Lincoln’s death 150 years ago with three exhibits of rare artifacts such as Mary Todd Lincoln’s bloodstained fan. At Springfield’s historic Union Station, you’ll find “Lincoln: History to Hollywood,” with sets, costumes and props from the award-winning Steven Spielberg movie “Lincoln.” More info visit-springfieldillinois.com
