Research at CQUniversity CQUniversity Australia is committed to excellence in research and innovation with a particular emphasis on issues that affect the Central Queensland region. We strive to achieve relevance in our research goals through linkages with industry, business, government and the community, and through collaboration with national and international researchers and their respective networks. The long-term Research and Innovation vision is for CQUniversity to be Australia’s leading university for research achievements and industry partnerships in our priority areas of research. The University will be known for its expertise in and contribution to innovations for and solutions to the issues that confront the resources industries, community health and social viability; and education. To achieve this vision and our goals, the University is continuing its process for focusing its researchers and research efforts and increasing the scale of research through the establishment of the two institutes: the Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability, and the Institute for Health and Social Science Research, and the establishment of two new research centres in the area of education: the International Education Research Centre and the Learning and Teaching Education Research Centre. CQUniversity also provides a range of exciting and relevant research opportunities for Masters and PhD candidates and is committed to excellence and quality in the research training experience of its candidates.

CQUni Research structure CQUniversity focuses its research in the three priority areas that directly contribute to the support and revitalisation of our community; health, sustainability and education. The Office of Research facilitates research activity through the provision of effective and efficient support services. These priority areas are hosted within two institutes and supporting research centres and groups:

Iris Groups and Centres The Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) strives to achieve environmentally sustainable development in the dry tropics. It has six main fields of endeavour - marine, coastal, terrestrial and freshwater ecology, environmental resource economics, ecotoxicology and some associated social studies. The focus is on issues associated with sustainable regional development, accounting for the costs of environmental impact, biodiversity management, rehabilitation success, ecosystem functional indicators of environmental performance and integrated regional monitoring. The Centre for Railway Engineering (CRE) provides a focus for several engineering disciplines that apply to rail research. The CRE has a strong customer focus and endeavours to build a strong partnership between its researchers and the rail industry through high-quality generic and commercial research, continuing professional education and consultancy services. CRE has expertise in train and wagon dynamics, simulation, structural fatigue, failure analysis, erosion control, driver advisory systems, condition monitoring and train control and brake systems.

The Centre for Plant and Water Sciences (CPWS) aims to undertake research, postgraduate training and undergraduate teaching in the water and plant sciences. We have a focus on the tropical environment given our geographic locations, but we undertake basic research as befits the expectations of an academic institution. Process Engineering and Light Metals Centre (PELM) particularly focuses its research in three areas: industrial materials failure analysis and sustainability; industrial processes with particular emphasis on optimisation of fluid flow parameters; and industrial asset management. The Centre for Intelligent and Networked Systems (CINS) was established in 2008 to provide a focus for university research in the general area of intelligent and networked systems. It has four key research programs: 1. Agent-Based Systems 2. Computational Intelligence 3. Data Mining 4. Networked Systems

Research at CQUniversity The Power Engineering Research Group is looking to the future of electricity generation, transmission and distribution in its many forms. Our research currently includes areas such as Smart Grid, renewable energy systems, power quality, electrical asset management as well as traditional generation, transmission and distribution systems.

IHSSR Groups and Centres The Australian Health and Social Science Study Panel is a study of Australian adults initiated and funded by the IHSSR at CQUniversity Australia. The Centre of Longitudinal and Preventative Health Research strives to provide an evidence-based platform for health intervention research in Central Queensland through development of longitudinal prospective studies that monitor health needs and outcomes.

74

The Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing evaluates clinical and behavioural health issues through the research and promotion of positive change as well as understanding the psychosocial, cultural and geographical contexts of health and health-related behaviours. The Centre for Physical Activity Studies develops a range of ethical, evidence-based strategies to promote health and prevent disease through the adoption of healthier lifestyles and diet. The primary aim of the International Program of Psycho-Social Health Research (IPP-SHR) is to examine and document the human experience of serious illness (both physical and mental). IPP-SHR addresses a wide range of topic areas including: haematology/oncology; mental health; palliative care; rural and remote health; Indigenous health and paediatrics. The Population Research Laboratory (PRL) has a diversified portfolio of research projects that it has undertaken for university and non-university based researchers to enable decision making in both the public and private sectors, specialising in survey design, testing and evaluation; large-scale population-based CATI surveys; online surveys; focus groups; and combined methodology research. The purpose of the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research is to contribute to the prevention of domestic and family violence by informing, promoting and supporting the actions of individuals, communities, services and governments through state-wide leadership in research, education and evaluation.

10,000 Steps is Australia’s first ‘whole of community’ health promotion physical activity project funded by Queensland Health. In addition, two new research centres support educational research.

Education research centres The International Education Research Centre (IERC), established in April 2009, aims to develop for CQUniversity a leadership position in applied research into international education issues, enhancing the University’s capacity and reputation as a provider of high-quality interculturally-informed education and service to all its students, domestic and international. It also seeks to position the University as an authoritative and reputable public commentator on matters within this vital area of Australian education, social and economic activity. Established in July 2009, the Learning and Teaching Education Research Centre’s (LTERC) membership and activities are inclusive of all staff and Research Higher Degree students interested in the scholarship of learning and teaching. LTERC is strategically positioned within the field of education research at CQUniversity. It provides multidisciplinary research capabilities and expertise in ethically responsible, socially and culturally inclusive investigations into learning and teaching. LTERC’s unique advantage and challenge is its diverse consistuencies, internal and external to the University.

Useful Information Work While You Study Many international students gain valuable experience by obtaining work during their stay in Australia. Part-time or casual employment can not only provide you with the opportunity to earn extra income, but also help you make new friends and establish contacts. If you are granted an Australian Student Visa, you automatically receive a work visa.Your work visa permits you to work up to 20 hours per week in part-time employment during term and full-time employment during vacation. You need to obtain a Tax File Number (TFN) to work in Australia. You can obtain a TFN online from the Australia Tax Office website or pick up an application form from the University. CQUniversity also provides support to source employment. Many employers advertise daily via the University for casual and part-time employment (less than 20 hours per week).

Health Cover The Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires all international students and their families to obtain health insurance through the Overseas Student Health Cover Scheme (OSHC) for the duration of the student visa. Medibank Private is the preferred OSHC provider for CQUniversity.Your full Overseas Student Health Cover payment must be made when you pay your first term tuition fees, prior to coming to Australia. The current annual membership fee is AU$858 for a family (or AU$429 for six months) and AU$429 for a single (or AU$214.50 for six months). If you have a health problem, make an appointment to see a doctor (look under medical practitioners in the telephone book). If you require emergency medical attention after hours, go to the Accident and Emergency Section of your nearest hospital. OSHC will contribute towards the cost of any medical and hospital care you may need while studying in Australia. The OSHC scheme covers you for 85% of the recommended government scheduled fee

for a doctor’s visit (including a specialist doctor) and pathology and X-ray services. For medical services while you are an admitted patient at a hospital, OSHC will pay 100% of the schedule fee. If the doctor charges more than the schedule fee, you pay the difference. OSHC pays the cost of ambulance transport to a hospital or medical centre if you have an accident or an unforeseen illness that requires immediate medical attention. OSHC does not cover the cost of dental, physiotherapy, optical, or any other ancillary services.

How To Make An OSHC Claim When you receive treatment from a doctor, you will be given an account to pay. After you have paid this account, take the account and receipt together with your OSHC membership card to any Medibank Private Office to apply for your refund, which will be paid into your nominated bank account.

Extra Private Health Insurance You may consider joining a private medical insurance company to cover you and your family for some of the cost of services not covered by OSHC such as optical, physiotherapy, dental and some pharmaceuticals. You may also choose to arrange private health insurance through Medibank Private or other health funds listed in the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory.

Accommodation New international students enrolling at any CQUniversity campus will be provided with assistance and advice regarding accommodation options both prior to and upon arrival. Rockhampton campus: International students have a range of accommodation options in Rockhampton. The CQUniversity Capricornia College offers on-campus accommodation for those studying in Rockhampton and is a great place to live and learn. The Capricornia College provides single-student accommodation with shared facilities and

a common dining room where all meals are included. CQUniversity has teamed up with the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) to give international students the opportunity to be hosted by a specially trained AHN homestay host for their introduction to accommodation and living in Australia. Homestay is a wonderful way to share a unique cultural experience. AHN homestay hosts will help you with life in Australia, and advise you of general safety, accommodation and welfare information. AHN homestay families have undergone extensive training, police checks (as required), are personally interviewed and homes professionally inspected. Other benefits include insurance to protect you and your belongings while in homestay, and a professional 24/7 helpline including interpreter services should you ever need assistance. Information on homestay for students can be found at: http://www.homestaynetwork. org/cquniversity-students All campuses: At each of our campus locations students can choose to live independently or to share a rental house, apartment or townhouse, either furnished or unfurnished. Rental accommodation cannot be arranged in advance of arrival, as students must inspect the accommodation prior to signing a tenancy agreement. A bond fee is usually paid at the time of signing an agreement or lease. The bond fee is usually four times the weekly rent. Tenancy agreements are usually for fixed periods of time (six or 12 months). The agreement is a legal document that sets out the conditions of rent, dates when the agreement starts and finishes, and other terms of the agreement. CQUniversity staff can provide advice before an agreement is signed.

Public Transport Public transport may include a bus, train, ferry or tram depending on where you live.Your weekly transport costs will be dependent on the distance you live from the campus. Costs range from AU$20 - AU$50 per week. 75

Cost of Living Australia enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world, while still remaining affordable. An average international student in Australia can expect to pay about AU$360 a week on: • accommodation; • food; • clothing; • entertainment;

• transport; • international and domestic travel; • telephone; and • incidental costs. You could spend more or less depending on where you live, your lifestyle and your course.

Visas Visa Information You will require a student visa in order to study in Australia. The type of visa you need depends on the length of your stay. If you intend to stay in Australia for three months or less, you may apply for a short-stay visa. For periods of study greater than three months, a Student Visa is required and is granted only if you enrol in a registered, full-time program in Australia. All courses for international students, and the Australian education and training institutions that offer them, must be registered with the Australian Government. You can apply for a visa online. CQUniversity is not able to give qualified advice on the Australian visa system but the CQUniversity Student Services or Client Services staff are able to answer general questions about student visas and provide guidance on where you should go to seek further visa advice. Please visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website at www. immi.gov.au for further information. If you are currently living in Australia you can telephone DIAC direct on 131 881.

Graduate (Temporary) visa – Subclass 485 This visa gives those overseas students who meet the two-year study requirement, but who do not meet the requirements for a permanent General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa, an opportunity to remain in Australia for up to 18 months to gain the additional skills they need. The visa will assist former overseas students as it will allow them to work and live in Australia, enhancing their cultural awareness and giving them greater exposure to the Australian labour market. Skilled graduate visa holders may choose to focus on improving their English language skills or gaining skilled employment in the Australian labour market. Alternatively, they may choose to complete a professional year that has been specified by the minister (where available in their chosen occupation). Applicants who can demonstrate that they have been employed in Australia for at least 12 months in their nominated skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation will be awarded 10 points under the GSM points test.

General Skilled Migration – regional Australia/low-population growth metropolitan areas For the purposes of General Skilled Migration (GSM), you may be able to claim points for the ‘regional Australia’ part of the points test if you have lived in one or more of these areas and have studied full-time at a campus located in regional Australia or a low-population growth metropolitan area for at least two years prior to lodging your migration application. You need to demonstrate that you have studied at a campus located in one of the specified regional/low-population growth metropolitan post codes. FOR YOUR INFORMATION Student Visa holders must attend at least 80% of classes which may include excursions planned as part of the language program. CQUniversity English Language Centre is required to keep attendance rolls of all class sessions and notify the relevant authorities of students with unsatisfactory attendance. DECLARATION I understand that, if I have a Student Visa, CQUniversity is required under Section 19 of the ESOS Act 2000 to inform the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) about: 1. changes to my program enrolment; and 2. any breach of my Student Visa condition in relation to attendance. Please note: Prior to commencement it is important that all prospective English Language Centre students read specific program information which is available in the CQUniversity English Language Centre prospectus or at www.language.cqu.edu.au. It is also important that you become familiar with the CQUniversity English Language Centre’s Refund Policy and English Language Centre Courses Dates and Fees List. Where an applicant or student, after accepting an offer of a place, subsequently gives less than four weeks written notice before the commencement of the term of an inability to undertake the program, all tuition fees paid are refundable less an administrative fee of 50% of the tuition fee due if notice is given prior to commencement of the term. No refund is payable if an applicant withdraws after the commencement of the term.

A full or partial refund may be given if a student withdraws from a course due to exceptional circumstances.

A refund will be given if a student’s account is in credit.
