Message from the Hon. P. J. Keating Former Prime Minister of Australia In a globalised world, nothing is more important to personal or national success than a high quality, flexible and responsive education system. Vocational education and training is a vital part of any such system because it provides the whole-oflife template for a knowledge society. Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE has a proud record of achievement in this area. It is one of the largest and most diverse institutions of its kind in Australia, with innovative courses that respond to the real needs of its students and industry. As well as serving its own region, city and country, NMIT’s support for overseas students and its work with Asian counterparts make it an important part of Australia’s educational engagement with our own region.
Best wishes
Brian MacDonald CEO, NMIT
I received a critical part of my own education at a technical college. I know from personal experience how vocational education can change lives. I am happy to be associated and directly involved with NMIT.

Student Information Enrol at NMIT Courses that go places A TAFE qualification is now highly portable and many courses have national codes (as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework) making them uniform throughout Australia. This means you can move to another TAFE institute (if they run the same course), and pick up where you left off without having to repeat any subjects. NMIT also recognises the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications of other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) including universities, TAFEs and other registered providers. This means your existing qualifications can be credited towards an NMIT qualification.
Get there faster with Skills Recognition In many cases you can fast-track your studies at NMIT through our Skills Recognition process. Students are assessed in a number of ways: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – provides students with partial or full credit towards an accredited qualification if the student already possesses skills and knowledge gained through: • workplace experience • voluntary work • social or domestic activities • formal or informal training Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) – enables students who have completed subjects through previous study to gain partial or full credit towards a new or current qualification.
Skills Recognition Fees and Charges during 2011 the following fees and charges applied to Skills Recognition.* • Ineligible for a government subsidised place: RPL/RCC AU$1 per student contact hour (SCH). * The above fees and charges are as at 2011 and may be subject to change in 2012. Skills recognition fees are paid on top of the tuition fees. Please contact the International Office for more information. Tuition fees can be reduced when Skills Recognition results in a shortening of the course duration by one semester or more for certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses. For associate degree and bachelor courses, fees can be reduced on a per-subject basis.
Skills Recognition can significantly reduce the amount of formal training involved in gaining a qualification.
Students must also provide evidence of English language proficiency. See specific course information for further entry requirements. Course details subject to change. Check www.nmit.edu.au/international for updates.
