Lori Peskey, Matt Zens, and Michael Blume John Leibel Memorial Scholarship
In 1952, John L. Leibel became the executive director of the South Dakota Hereford Association, a position he held for thirty-three years. In that capacity, John was a true industry leader, devoting himself to the South Dakota Hereford Association membership, and to the improvement of the Hereford breed. Better than most, John understood the importance of providing support and educational opportunities for the next generation of leaders. Through his efforts, the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association became the strong association which exists today. John Leibel passed away in 2003, but with the help of the Leibel family, John’s legacy lives on in the South Dakota Junior Hereford Achievement Program, which was established to provide scholarship and educational support for young people interested in a career in agriculture and Hereford cattle. The John Leibel Memorial Scholarship is specifically intended to provide financial assistance to those South Dakota students who have long-term career interests in agriculture.
Eligibility: The John Leibel Memorial Scholarship is limited to post-secondary students who are, or have been, members of the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association. There is no requirement that the student be attending a South Dakota college/university/vocational school. The scholarship recipient will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship, to be used at the post-secondary educational institution of his/her choice. Scholarship applications can be accessed on the South Dakota Hereford Association website at www.southdakotaherefords.org. Applications are due August 1 of each year.
THE 2019 JOHN LEIBEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Camryn Houselog is an 18-year-old Hereford breeder from Estelline, South Dakota. She is currently attending South Dakota State University and pursuing a degree in Human Biology, Pre-Med. Camryn started her Hereford herd when she was only 14 years old, and she’s run with it ever since. She has been very involved in the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association, including serving on the Board as the reporter and a director and reigning as the 2018 SD Hereford Queen. Camryn hopes to continue raising Hereford cattle, being a role model and leader for future generations of Hereford breeders, and being a part of the SDJHA, National Hereford Women, and the National Junior Hereford Association. It is with great sincerity that Camryn wishes to thank the John Leibel family, as well as the SDHA Board and membership, for believing in her and helping to continue her education.

They have cow power written all over them. Both of these females will be very successful not only in the show ring but out in the pasture. These heifers are so similar we will let you decide which is best. Retaining 1 flush.

This heifer wasn’t going to be for sale this fall but we had a few families see her at the show-barn before we could make her disappear back to the replacements and wanted to know about her so we decided to offer her at the excellence sale. She is young and green but one that when viewed from the side balances extremely well. Will she be ready to do some winning early this fall? Maybe not but by next summer she will be ready when it counts. Retaining 50% embryo interest.
