Dear Fellow Cattlemen,

In light of the extremely challenging year that we have all experienced, we are especially excited to bring you the 2020 South Dakota Excellence Sale. Circumstances surrounding COVID-19 required that we change location, and we have moved our sale to the Swiftel Center, sharing the space with the “Reds on the Prairie” Red Angus event. In order to accommodate the start time of Reds on the Prairie, the Excellence Sale will begin at 11 am. Although our location has changed, the quality and depth of the sale offering is as good as ever. Our South Dakota Hereford breeders have put together a set of show steer prospects that will be highly competitive. Breeders have also dug deep into their herds to offer females that will not only do well in the show ring, but have a bright future as highly productive females for their new owners. We are excited to see you on November 14!

Lori Peskey, Matt Zens, and Michael Blume John Leibel Memorial Scholarship

In 1952, John L. Leibel became the executive director of the South Dakota Hereford Association, a position he held for thirty-three years. In that capacity, John was a true industry leader, devoting himself to the South Dakota Hereford Association membership, and to the improvement of the Hereford breed. Better than most, John understood the importance of providing support and educational opportunities for the next generation of leaders. Through his efforts, the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association became the strong association which exists today. John Leibel passed away in 2003, but with the help of the Leibel family, John’s legacy lives on in the South Dakota Junior Hereford Achievement Program, which was established to provide scholarship and educational support for young people interested in a career in agriculture and Hereford cattle. The John Leibel Memorial Scholarship is specifically intended to provide financial assistance to those South Dakota students who have long-term career interests in agriculture.

Eligibility: The John Leibel Memorial Scholarship is limited to post-secondary students who are, or have been, members of the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association. There is no requirement that the student be attending a South Dakota college/university/ vocational school. The scholarship recipient will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship, to be used at the post-secondary educational institution of his/her choice. Scholarship applications can be accessed on the South Dakota Hereford Association website at www.southdakotaherefords.org. Applications are due August 1 of each year.

THE 2021 JOHN LEIBEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Trevor is the son of Mark and Jeanne Johnson and grew up and raising Herefords on his family’s operation, Sleepy Hollow Farm, where they market bulls and females along with other area breeders in the I-29 Bull Run Sale. Trevor has been an active member of the SD Junior Hereford Assn for the past 10 years. He has served on the SD Junior Hereford Board and was the President in 2019-2020. He has participated at the State and National level, and credits his trip to the NJHA Faces of Leadership event in Amarillo, TX and his involvement with the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout program where he retained ownership and fed out his black baldy feeder steers, to helping further guide him towards a career interest in Feedlot Management. Trevor graduated Beresford High School with high honors in 2020. He is currently studying and on the Livestock Judging Team at Butler Community College, El Dorado, KS, he will ultimately pursue a bachelors degree in AgBusiness/Economics and Animal Science. 20 2 0 S D E X C E L L E N C E S A L E || 2

Dr. Michael & Cynthia Schlosser Scholarship Fund

In December 2016, Cynthia Schlosser, wife of the deceased Dr. Michael Schlosser, formed a fund to provide current and past members of the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association scholarship support for post-secondary education. This is called the Dr. Michael & Cynthia Schlosser Scholarship Fund and it is awarded annually. Dr. Michael Schlosser age 59, was an Emergency physician with Avera Health in Aberdeen, SD and an Army Reserve medical doctor whom served four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was killed in a head-on motor vehicle collision by an impaired driver near Mina, SD, November 21, 2015. Cynthia Schlosser is a nurse. They were living in Aberdeen and Onaka, SD at the time. In 1991 Michael & Cynthia started Schlosser Herefords by purchasing 20 registered Hereford cows from Cynthia’s parents, Duane and Janice Rausch of Rausch Herefords in Onaka, SD. Cynthia is the granddaughter of the late William (Bill) Rausch of Rausch Herefords in Hoven SD. After Duane’s death the herd continued to expand under the care of Gary & Twila Rausch of Rausch Herefords. Cynthia & Michael were active in the operation and management. They spent many days each month in Onaka helping with the routine management of the herd which had grown to 300 head. Their cattle operation began as a fun family venture and turned into a secondary business for them.

Cynthia Rausch Schlosser was crowned the 1974 South Dakota Hereford Queen in her senior year of high school. Cynthia went on to nursing school and recently retired from 42 years of civilian nursing and 29 years as a nurse officer with the ND National Guard and US Army Reserves. She served two deployments during her career. Michael received his Master’s in Chemistry and Doctorate in Medicine. He served 16 years in the ND Army National Guard and US Army Reserves as a physician. Michael served 28 years as an emergency and family practice physician providing services in North Dakota and South Dakota to rural residents. Cynthia states, “Providing the scholarship in honor of my husband’s and my contribution to the Hereford cattle industry provides opportunities for others, not just full time ranchers, but also anyone who wants the enjoyment of raising cattle. For me it is a remembrance of our quiet and happy times on the prairie, away from the hustle and bustle of the life of emergency medicine. The scholarship is a reminder of my childhood growing up on a registered Hereford ranch in rural South Dakota. It is something I hope my grandchildren may appreciate.” Michael and Cynthia have 5 children. Cynthia now lives in Bismarck, ND near her granddaughters and volunteers for Hospice. Michael is buried in the ND Veteran’s Cemetery in Mandan, ND. Scholarship applications can be accessed on the South Dakota Hereford Association website at www.southdakotaherefords.org. Applications are due August 1 of each year.

THE 2021 SCHLOSSER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Chesney Effling is the 18 year old daughter of Chris and Kristi Effling of Highmore, South Dakota. She is currently a Freshman at Kansas State University, majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Meat Science. Chesney has been passionate about the Hereford breed since she started showing Hereford Steers from Schuette Land and Cattle Co. That led her to purchase the foundation of her Herefords, R Sweet Red Wine from Rausch Herefords. Chesney is most proud of her bred and owned cattle and has raised several National Champions. This year, she was recognized as a Golden Bull Recipient at the 2020 Junior National.

This April daughter of Small Town Kid and our “Candy” cow has us very excited for her future! From head to tail you have to appreciate her style and balance. Her mother had a very successful show career and has turned into a picture perfect, front pasture type cow. We feel this lady can do the same for you!

Its really neat when you can get heifers to be this presentable with their EPDS but match that in actual quality. This is an angular heifer with an abundance of rib and muscle that can get out and go on her feet and legs. Really an elite female on paper and in the pen. Goggle eyed and cherry red. Take a look here!

This dark red March heifer is hard to part with. You’ll see her cow family is similar to the May heifer, this is no coincidence. All the cows here do not miss. Her striking profile and swooping belly will catch the judges eye as soon as you hit the ring. We started our cow herd at sales like this with heifers like her. Don’t miss your chance on this one.

Heifer Grant Program Helps Young Producers Get Started By Janelle Atyeo Tri-State Neighbor Editor Ryan Wollman is just 13, but he’s already looking to help younger kids get started in the cattle industry. Three years ago, the Bridgewater, South Dakota teen used a grant program from the South Dakota Hereford Association to purchase his first heifer at the South Dakota Excellence Sale. He bought another heifer the following year, and this year is the first time he’ll be selling two steer calves on the Excellence Sale, set for Nov. 14 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. “I will have nice, good-looking Hereford calves,” Wollman said. He imagines those two Hereford calves will go to another kid looking to start their own Hereford herd, just like he did not long ago. “I hope whoever buys them keeps them to show at the State Fair next year,” he said. Wollman has put in hard work over the years to care for his cattle. Arriving home on the school bus from Bridgewater-Emery where he’s in the eighth grade, Wollman quickly changes into work boots and sets off to mix feed for his newly weaned calves. “He’s a good worker. He helps out a lot with the cattle,” said his dad, Roger Wollman, who raises corn, soybeans and a herd of about 90 cows. The Wollman family also includes mom, Kate, and Ryan’s twin brother, Dylan. As the one who’s taken to farming the most, Ryan Wollman started raising bucket calves to show for 4-H. His deal with his dad was that he if he took care of them, he could keep them. With them he started building his herd of commercial Angus. Last winter, he added four bred heifers he bought with a youth loan through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency. The program gives operating loans up to $5,000 to kids ages 10-20. With his money in hand, Wollman kept track of cattle prices to learn what he could afford. In February, his dad took him to the Madison Livestock sale barn. He watched as many of the lots bid above his price range. From what ended up being the last group of cattle in the sale ring that day, he got his four bred heifers.

Ryan Wollman pours feed for the two steer calves he’ll be selling at the South Dakota Hereford Association Excellence Sale in November. Photo by Janelle Atyeo “They have a better attitude and they seem to gain better weight,” Wollman said. The Wollmans found the Hereford association when Ryan needed to take one of his bottle calves to the vet. Dr. Mike Stiefvater at Salem Veterinary Service, himself a Hereford association member, told the Wollmans about the heifer grant program. The South Dakota Hereford Association typically offers 10 heifer grants a year. The program started in 1987, funded by donations and proceeds from the silent auction at the annual banquet. The $600 grant is open to kids age 8-21. Applications are due Nov. 1, and forms are available on the southdakotaherefords.org website. As part of the heifer program, the grant recipient agrees to show their cattle through the next year. Wollman showed his heifers, named Rita and Flo, at shows including Hereford Field Days in Winner, South Dakota and the Midwest Classic in Pipestone, Minnesota. They went to the South Dakota Summer Spotlight and to the county and state fairs. Flo did well, but Rita was pretty certain she was not made to be a show animal. She was a bit too sassy in the ring, Wollman said. Over those few years, he’s found a lot of support from fellow Hereford association members. Wollman keeps in touch with the Junior Hereford member who sold him his first heifer. Ivan Blume, son of Bruce and Nancy Blume of Redfield, was 14 at the time, and now he’s a senior in high school and president of the South Dakota Junior Hereford Association. Recently accepted into Kansas State University, he’s looking forward to studying animal science and continuing to build a quality herd back home. Blume bought his first two steers off of the Excellence Sale when he was in third grade. Then he bought a heifer and started his own herd. He had years of experience under his belt by the time he took Wollman under his wing.

“It was good experience for him to do the paperwork,” said his mom, Kate Wollman.

The two would connect at the Hereford shows, and Blume shared pointers on cattle feed and fitting.

When he sells his steers this fall, he plans to use the money from the sale to buy more cows and make payments on his loan

“Just being buddies with him is probably the best thing a guy can do,” Blume said. “There’s quite an age gap but at these show deals, but everybody seems the same age and we all look after each other.”

Being out of school due to COVID-19 shutdowns this spring allowed Wollman a chance to work closely with his animals. He watched his heifers calve and tagged a lot of new calves from the family’s herd. Through the summer, he worked with his new calves – named Rudy and Franklin – to halter break them. While he continues to add to his commercial herd, Wollman likes his Herefords best. 20 2 0 S D E X C E L L E N C E S A L E || 16

Wollman looks up to him. He finds it neat that by selling calves from that first Excellence Sale things will come full circle. “Somebody might feel that way toward me,” he said.
