Bischoff’s Ravine Creek Ranch

8:00 AM, Tues., Sept. 28 Address: 20025 399th Ave., Huron, SD • www.RavineCreekRanch.com Gerald: 605/350-0979 • Garett: 605/461-1555 • Matt: 605/350-0980 In 1906, Jerry’s grandfather purchased Ravine Creek Ranch north of Huron, SD. For the past 115 years, the Bischoff family has been dedicated to raising quality cattle, with the last 70 years focused on Hereford genetics. Along with Jerry and Janelle, their son Garret and his sons Peyton and Cooper, and their son Matt and his wife Heather and their kids, Parker, Reagan and Easton, make up the Ravine Creek Ranch operation work force. Daughter Lori and husband Mike Peskey, and kids Blake and Kyla also have a herd of their own and they put their offering of bulls and baldy heifers in the production sale every year. Daughter Abby contributes by doing most of their ad work and marketing. Ravine Creek Ranch consists of approximately 2600 acres of cropland, pasture and hayland. About 200 head of registered Hereford cows make their home at Ravine Creek Ranch. They use Embryo transfer and Artificial Insemination to use the genetics they feel will complement and build their herd. They are focused on breeding Herefords with plenty of muscle, while paying attention to maternal and carcass traits. Keeping the commercial cowman in mind, they like to market bulls that will cross well on a black cow. Strong believers in the Whole Herd reporting system, Ravine Creek Ranch is a Gold TPR breeder. A highlight for the ranch was showing the Reserve Champion pen of three Spring Bull Calves at the 2020 National Western in Denver. Watch for our online heifer sale October 11th when we will offer 10 to 12 of our top heifers. Ravine Creek Ranch began having an annual production sale in 2006, after the purchase of the Randy Helms herd from Nebraska. The sale is currently held the second Wednesday in March. The 2022 Sale will be held on March 9th, 2022 at Magness Livestock Sale Barn in Huron, SD.

Wagner Herefords

10:15-11:15 AM, Tues., Sept. 28 Address: 39365 182nd St., Redfield, SD www.WagnerHerefords.com • Reese: 605/450-1085 • Elly Jo: 605/450-9790 Wagner Herefords is owned and operated by Reese and Elly Jo Wagner alongside their three children: Weston (15), Jocelyn (12), and Abby (8). They run a 250 cow-calf herd of predominantly registered Herefords near Tulare, SD, host an annual sale and farm 1,800 acres of corn, soybeans, and alfalfa. Reese’s decision to raise Hereford cattle was heavily influenced by the men in his life: Virgil Wagner, his grandpa, and Rick Wagner, his dad. When he was 9, Reese bought his first show heifer — a Hereford. The rest is history. Reese has been purchasing, raising, and selling Hereford cattle ever since. He officially started Wagner Herefords in 1999 after graduating from South Dakota State University and is the first in his family to raise Hereford seedstock for commercial cattlemen. Wagner Herefords is a true family operation. Reese focuses on breeding decisions, procuring animals to add to the herd, and staying in touch with the beef industry. Elly Jo maintains detailed records on everything, coordinates all sale details from the food to the advertising, and occasionally puts her Mechanical Engineering degree to use troubleshooting planter or combine issues. Reese does most of the farming with some help from Elly Jo, Weston, and his parents. And during harvest, it’s all hands-on deck as they work to get their crop and Reese’s parents’ crop harvested. The main goal of Wagner Herefords is to produce eye-appealing, easy-keeping bulls and females that their customers will have success with. Much of the herd has come from dispersion sales like Oxley Herefords in Mahnomen, MN, and K&B Herefords of Onida, SD. Lately, the Wagners have been purchasing their bulls from Topp Herefords of Grace City, ND. They have also purchased registered Hereford cows from Del Wood. In 2011, Mark Baxter of Baxter Angus Farm purchased registered bred heifers from Wagner Herefords. Mark was so impressed with the quality of the cattle that he approached the Wagners about hosting a joint sale. So, in 2012, the Wagners participated in their first live sale at Baxter Angus near Rockham, SD. Things have evolved over the years—from the growing number of cattle to the transition to video, which is less stress on the animals. In 2019, the Wagner family relocated the sale to their operation near Tulare and started running it online. This past spring, they successfully hosted their 3rd online sale with an in-person open house in a brand-new facility on their ranch. The sale is usually the fourth Saturday in February, but this year it will be Saturday, February 19, 2022. The sale will offer 20 yearling Hereford bulls, 20 two-yearold Hereford bulls, 60 black baldie heifers, and five registered-bred Hereford heifers. Video and sale information can be found on wagnerherefords.com in mid-February. 2021 South Dakota Hereford Tour • 9

Bar JZ Ranch

1 PM, Tues., Sept. 28 Address: 18542 326 Ave., Holabird, SD www.barjz.com • Don: 605/870-1302 • Seth: 605/870-2169 The year was 1928. Dutch immigrants Jake and Lutske Zilverberg needed a bigger place than their small farm at Wessington Springs for their five children. Jake bought a run-down ranch thirteen miles north of Holabird. In those days fences were few and far between. Cattle and horses both roamed at will. Sometimes Lutske would flap her apron to scare away bands of horses who ran through her yard. John Zilverberg, the second son, was fifteen at this time. Most people around Holabird had Shorthorns, and the Zilverbergs sold Red Poll bulls. Later they crossed a Hereford bull on the Red Poll cows. In 1940 John purchased three registered Hereford heifers. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, John enlisted in the Marines and served in the Pacific. With the Japanese defeated, John married Dorothy Boehmer in 1945 and resumed ranching. John held his first Bar JZ Polled Hereford production sale in 1950 at the Livestock Sales Pavilion in Miller, SD and beginning in 1953 in his own sale barn on the south ranch where Seth and Bridget now reside. In 1970 we purchased number 97 of 100 founding memberships of the North American Limousin Foundation. The American Polled Hereford Association inducted John into its Hall of Fame in 1994. While we have always emphasized genetic dehorning, DNA testing now allows us to select homozygous polled herd sires and offer homozygous polled bulls to our customers. We AI nearly all of our cows and all heifers, and lately we have retained more replacements to keep up with the brisk demand for Hereford bulls. February 22, 2022 will be the 73rd Annual Production Sale of Polled Hereford, Limousin, and Lim-Flex bulls. Don and Peg with Seth and Bridget provide all of the labor which keeps the ranch operating. Don focuses on feeding, Peg manages registrations and catalog, Seth chooses genetics, and Bridget cares for 5th generation future rancher, Solanus. Cody, Wesley, Lydia, and Caroline live in Pierre and periodically help on the ranch. Thanks for visiting our tour stop!

Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch

4:15-6:00 PM, Tues., Sept. 28 Address: 21115 344th Ave., Ree Heights, SD www.fawcettselmcreekranch.com • Dan: 605/870-6172 • Keith: 605/870-0161 The Fawcett family started working the land now known as Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch in 1906. The children who are now growing up on the ranch are the 6th generation since John Fawcett moved his family here in the early 1900’s. Throughout the generations there have been many changes but one thing that has always been a staple is Hereford cattle. FECR’s focus is producing cattle that will meet all expectations required in the commercial sector. There is no single trait selection tool that is used. We seek out the best herd bulls to add to our battery every year based on phenotype, maternal, carcass traits and longevity in their pedigree. EPD’s are considered AFTER all of the previously mentioned have met our expectations. The females here at the ranch are easy fleshing, long bodied cattle that are built to last. We calve nearly 1,000 females every year with about 1/3 of those cows calving starting mid-February at the north end of the ranch and the remaining cows start to calve the end of March. The yearling sale bulls are the result of the early calving cows, and the 2-yearold bulls are a result of the cows calving end of March through May. Our fall female sale is held on the second Saturday in October which offers females for not only juniors but other seedstock producers who have purchased to help propel their operations. The annal bull sale is held on the second Monday in February. Steer calves are backgrounded here at the ranch, and we also develop and AI around 250 commercial females every year to be marketed as bred heifers which undergo the same strict culling as our replacements. Welcome to the ranch!

Blume Cattle

7:30-9:00 AM, Sept. 29 Address: 815 Hyde Rd., Pierre, SD www.BlumeCattle.com • Michael: 605/870-0052 • Gordon: 605/280-3861 Welcome to Blume Herefords! Gordon and Gary purchased their first heifer in 1964 from Gilbert Frankenstein and that was the beginning of Blume Polled Hereford Farm. It continued to grow and expand until 1975 when Gordon and Gary dissolved the partnership. Gordon & Thordys continued under the BPHF prefix until we added horned genetics and it was changed to Blume Herefords. We have consigned cattle to the SD Excellence Sale for many years with great success and many repeat buyers. We have also exhibited cattle at the National Western Stock Show, American Royal, Black Hills Stock Show, and South Dakota State Fair. All of Gordon and Thordys’ children showed cattle in the local 4-H program. Several grandchildren have also been involved in 4-H and the Jr. Hereford program, showing locally and at Jr. Nationals. In 2001, we added Angus and have used Simmental bulls on them recently as well. We now have Hereford, Angus, Simmental, and a few cows for club calf production. Our Hereford cowherd consists of Remitall, Line One and Sensation influences. Cattle that are not retained or sold as breeding stock or show cattle are finished and sold direct to the consumer as whole, half or quarters as freezer beef. Blume Herefords consists of Gordon and Thordys and Michael, Becky, Jayna, and Rett. Kyle and Kris Blume (Gary’s boys) and Joe and Alexis Brandt (Brandt Herefords) also have cattle and help out when needed. Thank you for visiting and feel free to stop anytime!

K&B Herefords

10:30-11:30, Sept. 29 • Address: 17309 322nd Ave., Onida, SD Kirk 605-769-9991 • Brooke 605-769-9992 K&B Herefords is a 4 generation ranch that has been providing seedstock to the registered and commercial industry for 76 years, J.C. Bieber registered the first Herefords in 1945 and the family has raised Herefords since that time. Ken and Bonnie Bieber married and started at the present location in 1959. They raised 3 children and gradually grew the ranch and expanded the herd. Daughter Brenda (and family now in the Denver area), sons Brooke and family and Kirk work and manage the ranch. Ken & Bonnie/K&B Herefords were honored in 2009 being inducted into the American Hereford Association Hall of Fame, as breeders who have dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Brooke and Kirk were honored in 2000 as the National Western Stock Show Hereford Herdsmen of the Year. We don’t do much showing cattle these days but we have raised and shown National Western Grand and Divisional Champions in the open show, pen show and carload show. We exhibited cattle at the Denver show for over 30 consecutive years (helped immensely by Brenda and family living in that area). Pretty good for a little family ranch in SD! In 2010 K&B Herefords held its 56th annual production sale. In the fall of 2010 we had a cow sale selling all cows 8 years and under, retaining our ET heifer calves and a small bank of embryos. Through those ET females we have slowly built our herd numbers back up to around 100 registered cows and 30 yearling heifers. We also run 250 Angus commercial cows that we breed to our Hereford bulls and raise F1 baldy calves. From 2011 to 2019 we sold bulls private treaty, as our numbers have increased we started having an online bull sale in 2020. Next spring we will be going to an auction style sale and would like to invite you to attend. We will be selling yearling and two-year-old bulls along with a few select heifer calves. New date for the auction is March 11, 2022. We have both horned and polled genetics, we selected our cattle on phenotype and balanced traits as much as possible, with a special emphasis on udder quality! Our family has for over 76 years had a passion and love for Hereford cattle through the ups and downs and now the bright future for this great breed! 2021 South Dakota Hereford Tour • 13

Rausch Herefords

1:30-3:30, Wed., Sept. 29 Address: 14831 Hereford Rd., Hoven, SD www.RauschHerefords.com Shannon: 605-769-0203 • Jerry: 605/769-0218 • Vern: 605/769-0219

Welcome! We are looking forward to your visit to Rausch Herefords! The Rausch family is grateful for the opportunity to work each day together as a family in God’s beautiful creation. We are also grateful for our neighbors and customers who support us. Our gratitude has grown even more so in the past year and a half and many times we have expressed that considering everything . . . we feel we are living in the best place in the world at this time in history. Recently we have been blessed to have some of Shannon and Sue’s sons, the 4th generation, join Rausch Herefords. They are Michael and his wife Kaitlyn, Jacob and Peter. Andy and his wife Maggie operate a feedlot next door and work in partnership with us. New little grandchildren bring great delight to our lives. We also value the employment of other family members - full and part time. Rausch Herefords was home to Revolution 4R, Hyalite on Target, R New York 5083 and Leader, all of which have become nationally recognized herd sires. Revolution, On Target, New York and Leader cow families are among those that have made the most impact on our herd and the Hereford Breed. Excel, Horizon, Kilo and Valor cow families are among several more to keep an eye on. Our 64th Annual Bull and Female Sale will be coming up on President’s Day in February of 2022. We try to wean 1350 registered calves each fall. We currently market 100 yearling bulls, 100 two-year old bulls and 400 females. From these calves come our replacement heifers as well. We also raise several hundred feeder steers each year. Rick and Gary Rausch’s cowherds are a big part of this total picture. Gary (62) tragically passed away in an accident near his farm on August 1, 2021. Gary will be deeply missed. We cherish the memories and working relationship we shared with him. The younger generations in this family have ancestors on both sides of the family tree to be grateful to for their hard work in good times and as well as in the trying years. On the Rausch side, the Hereford business began in 1946. In the 1960’s Vern and Jerry married sisters, Sharon and Vicki Arbach, respectively, who were the neighbor girls down the road. Currently, Shannon and Sue live and raised their children on the Arbach homestead. The main part of the tour will go through this historic farm site which has been in the same family since it was homesteaded in 1883, when the town of Hoven was established. We sincerely hope you enjoy your stop at our family run business. Thank you for taking your precious time to come visit us!! 14 • 2021 South Dakota Hereford Tour

Chris Effling has made significant discoveries on South Dakota Hereford Tour

The 2009 South Dakota Hereford tour was an event that will leave a lasting impression for our family. I will never forget standing on the east side of the Rausch sale facility in a group of 2 year old pairs. I was visiting with Jerry Bischoff, when this red eyed heifer calf came walking across that pen. Dylan Koepke had also seen her and I said to him, “who is that heifer?” He replied, “039 is her number and she’s pretty dang good.” One thing led to another and our family purchased that female, R Sweet Red Wine 039 before leaving that evening. She generated over $500,000 in progeny sales and has had an impact in numerous programs, says Chris Effling. I later went back to Rausches and discovered R Leader 6964, who is currently making a tremendous impact on the Hereford breed. He has over 2500 progeny in 388 herds. We would have never acquired her or had the opportunity to look at several good programs that day without taking the time to enjoy the great people and cattle. This is just one of many stories that can be shared about going on tours. Thank you to the South Dakota Hereford Breeders for taking the time to promote your programs and your breed.
