On May 20, Don Mellott, our family patriarch, left this earth and went to Heaven. Don made the decision to raise purebred Charolais cattle in 1980, right here on this ranch. Like every other area of his life, he didn’t go halfway. He traveled the U.S. buying embryos and recipients from the best herds in the nation at a time when embryo transplant was brand new and cutting-edge technology. He was all about excellence in everything he did, and he applied that to the livestock that we raised, showed and purchased. Because of Don, Fox Hollow Farms has won every major show and received breed awards for Show Female of the Year and Roll of Excellence Sire. Don loved the Charolais breed and enjoyed the challenge of perfecting his herd. In years past, it was his desire to win Grand Champion in the show ring, always looking for that next blue ribbon or trophy. More recently, he was driving the pastures and walking the pens evaluating the bulls, picking out the top sellers, and planning the future. We will miss him terribly going forward, but he left his spirit in all of us and we will continue the same attitude toward excellence that he had. His philosophy is the foundation of our program, and his vision is what continues to inspire us today. We love you and miss you, Don, Dad, Papa!

Thank you for your interest in Volume 3 of our Fall Production Sale. 2022 has been one of the toughest years for us. As you’ve seen on the inside cover, my Dad, Don, passed away very unexpectedly. We weren’t prepared, and the loss is heavy. We do know that he is in Heaven, and the hope that we have in Jesus, that we can be reunited again, well that’s what helps ease the pain. I’ve learned how short our time here is, and I encourage you to make the most of the time that you have with the people that matter. And if you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, call me, or find me on sale day and I’ll tell you about mine, what he’s done for me, and how you can have one too.

We have a solid set of bulls and females for you to evaluate. As we’ve mated our herd, we’ve found what works and have stayed with that formula. Breed leading performance sires such as WCF Silver Gun 467, M6 New Standard 842, M6 Bells & Whistles 258P, WCR County Line 3132, and the tried-and-true M6 Grid Maker 104 P ET. We added Keys Cowboy 15C and EC Real Deal 127, and I think you’ll be pleased with these calves as well.

Dad always said to “cull ruthlessly”, and that’s what we’ve done. These animals will be sound, rugged and good footed. The females will be proven producers with good udders. If you’re looking for multiple-trait performance genetics, then you have some decisions to make. I’ve watched these bulls from calving to sale day, and while I knew they could perform, I was still surprised when I saw their actual performance figures and EPD numbers. I also like how the calving-ease bulls didn’t give up much against the performance-based bulls.

The females are tough to let go, but if we’re going to have a sale, then we’re going to sell good ones. The Pick of the Fall Heifer Calves is something I said I wouldn’t do. Picking between these three will come down to personal preference. I have a place reserved for all three in the donor pen! We’re offering some fantastic splits, pairs and bred females—out of proven cow families. Each female lot has done something good to earn their spot in this sale.
