1PM AT THE RANCH, ISABEL, SD
Welcome to our family’s 42nd Annual Bull Sale. Thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in the “LT” brand and breeding program. The best testament of our program is based upon the success of so many great operations that have put their trust in our cattle and customer service. We are truly blessed to be a small part of so many progressive commercial cowcalf and registered operations in the nation!
Each Fall and Winter we get to see what our genetics can do for our customers through our feeder cattle buyback program. We enjoy seeing how so many of our customers calves have continued to improve and that continue to top the markets on both price and pounds on the scale. Our goal is straight forward, we want to bring industry changing genetics to our customers that will help your operations be as efficient and profitable as possible.
This past year I was selected to be part of a special task force aimed to promote high quality, environmentally friendly, sustainable beef to the consumer world. We met with several of the major packers across the country to promote the benefits of the Charolais and Angus breeds and to launch a new branded beef program focused on the future of consumer demand by educating the consumer of the differences in the quality of beef. With the shortage of cattle in the supply chain there is no better time than now to put the best genetics to work for you and to capitalize on the growing demand of high-quality beef!
The bulls in this year’s offering reflects our commitment to provide proven, profitable genetics to our customers. We have continued to use many of our tried and proven sires that are well known around the Charolais and Angus world and have added several up-and-coming herd sires to the program that we feel will help promote the sustainability of the commercial cow-calf producer. Your acceptance of the bulls and the progeny you produce are the driving force behind our passion for raising the very best seedstock possible.
We are excited to have you evaluate this year’s sale offering. If we can be of assistance in any way, please feel free to contact any one of us, we would be happy to visit about bulls before sale day or have you stop by the ranch for a tour of the bulls and cow herd firsthand. And on sale day, come early and enjoy lunch and plan to stay for the post-sale social.

We are excited to take over the lead roles of the legendary Lindskov-Thiel program!
Over the past 42 years our founding father, Les Lindskov and partner Brent Thiel, have built one of the most recognized Angus and Charolais herds in the nation that has helped change both breeds. We have spent the last two decades building our own Angus and Charolais registered herd along with running the commercial cow herd and heifer development program. We have learned a lot from both Brent and Les the past several years and enjoyed promoting and marketing both our cattle and the Lindskov-Thiel cattle in our joint bull sale that we host each April. Our goal is straight forward, we want to bring industry changing genetics and the quality of service that our customers expect and help promote our customers feeder cattle and replacement females through our well recognized feeder cattle buy back program. We look forward to bringing the next generation of the Lindskov’s into the operation and look forward to meeting each and everyone of you in the Charolais and Angus world. We are excited to continue working with so many great operations that have supported the Lindskov-Thiel program over the past 42 years. We appreciate all our repeat customers and look forward to working with new operations in the future to help bring value to your operations.
We invite you to stop by for a ranch visit and see the same LT cowherd that built this program and show you some new and exciting genetics. The only change you will notice is the new ranch name “Lindskov’s LT Ranch”, the sale will continue to be held at the ranch on the 3rd Saturday in April and we invite you to join us on sale day! Brent and Nancy Thiel will continue to be part of the operation as they have retained part of the Angus females and will continue to market these great genetics in our April bull sale. Les and Marcia are not going far either so we are fortunate to have them all guiding us in the right direction. Please reach out to one of us on future bull purchases, semen, feeder cattle and replacement females.

Birth Weight EPD (BW) The expected difference in average birth weight (pounds) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth.
Calving Ease Direct (CE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calf heifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. It predicts the average difference in unassisted births with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.
Calving Ease Maternal (MCE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first calf daughters. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. It predicts the average difference in unassisted births with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW) The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genetic influence on pre-weaning growth rate.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW) The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. The evaluation reflects genetic influence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) The genetic ability of a sire’s or dam’s daughters to express in pounds of weaning weight in her calves due to her maternal ability through mothering instinct and milk.
Total Maternal EPD (MTL) A value to predict the weaning weight performance of calves from a animal’s daughters due to genetics for growth and maternal ability. Total Maternal is calculated by adding ½ the WW EPD to the Maternal Milk EPD.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) The expected difference in scrotal circumference (expressed in centimeters) of a bull’s or dam’s male offspring at yearling compared to progeny of all other animals evaluated. Research has also indicated a relationship between increased SC EPD and decreased age at puberty for daughters.
Carcass records are adjusted to an age constant endpoint. Therefore selection based on any or all of the carcass merit EPD are comparable among cattle at the same age endpoint. For example selection based on increased EPD for carcass weight will result in heavier carcass weights than those animals with lower EPD for carcass weights when the cattle are harvested at the same age.
Carcass Weight EPD (CW) Expected progeny differences for Carcass Weight is a predictor of pounds of retail product at a constant age endpoint. Selection for increased values should result in heavier carcasses, while selection for decreased values should result in lighter carcass weights at the same age endpoint. Carcass Weight EPD are expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight between parents progeny at an age constant endpoint.
Ribeye Area EPD (REA) Ribeye area is measured from a crosssectional area of the longissimus dorsi muscle at the 12th rib. Ribeye area is a major component of the USDA yield grade equation and selection for increased ribeye area should result in larger ribeyes and lower yield grades between animals with the same carcass weight. Ribeye area has a positive relationship with weight, the larger the animal the larger the ribeye area. Ribeye Area EPD are expressed in square inches and is a predictor of differences in ribeye area between parents progeny at a constant age endpoint.
Fat Thickness EPD (FAT) Fat thickness is measured at the 12th rib and is the primary component to the USDA Yield Grade equation. Fat thickness has a negative relationship to cutability; therefore, selection base on decreased fat thickness should result in lower yield grades and leaner cattle given the same age endpoint. Fat Thickness EPD are expressed in inches and are a predictor of differences in fat thickness between parent’s progeny at an age constant endpoint.
Marbling Score (MARB) Marbling is a subjective measure of the amount of intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Marbling score is the primary component of USDA Quality grade and selection for increased Marbling Score EPD should result in cattle with higher quality grades at the same age endpoints. Marbling score has a small genetic correlation with fat, therefore producers may select for increased marbling score EPD while not changing external fat thickness when cattle are harvested at the same age-constant endpoint. Marbling EPD is a prediction of the differences in the USDA subjective marbling score between parent’s progeny at an age constant endpoint. Marbling is expressed in the same units as the USDA Marbling Score (see table below), see the accompanying table for USDA Marbling Score in the Carcass Section.
Terminal Sire Index (TSI) The AICA Terminal Sire Index (TSI) is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) – BW, WW, YW, REA, CW, MARB and FAT – into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data.
The TSI represents a dollar index per terminal progeny produced for a bull in the AICA database, ranking them for profit potential. This dollar index is to be interpreted much like single trait EPD. For example, if Sire A’s index is $191.66 and Sire B’s index is $200.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 more net return ($200.00 minus $191.66) than Sire A’s offspring.
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
Accuracy (ACC) is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.
Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight (BW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight (WW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Yearling Weight (YW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Height (YH) is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference (SC) expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Docility (DOC) is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire.
MATERNAL
Heifer Pregnancy (HP) is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Weight (MW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
Claw Set (Claw) is expressed in units of claw-set score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set, which is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced.
Foot Angle (Angle) is expressed in units of foot-angle score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle, which is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.
The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass traits where the units of measure are in trait format and analyzed on an ageconstant basis.
Carcass Weight (CW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling (Marb) is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area (RE) expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness (Fat) expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
$Value Indexes reported in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Weaned Calf Value ($W) expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $W increases weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size.
Cow Energy Value ($EN) expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F) expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade.
Grid Value ($G) expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B) expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.

Danny Worth grew up on the family farm near East Whitlock Bay where he resided until his death.
Danny loved the farm and continued farming and ranching with his family, Dale, Dolan, Bart, and Preston, until his death. Danny headed the cattle portion of the 4D Ranch operation, attended many cattle sales, mended fences and pretty much decided whatever needed to be done regarding the cattle. He helped with the hogs and the crops whenever and however needed. He loved a good Charolais bull and believed in the advantages of cross breeding Charolais with his Black and Red cows. He was very proud of the cattle heard that he and his family had built and enjoyed watching their calves top the sale every fall. Danny knew good cattle and enjoyed the ranching lifestyle.
Danny loved to hunt, fish and trap. Growing up on the Missouri River hills, he was only a short distance to some of the best hunting and fishing a man could ask for. Every time we delivered the bulls to him we would look out over the Missouri River and one couldn’t hold back not calling it “God’s Country”, Danny would always reference the beauty of the land this way! Danny was a hard worker and enjoyed visiting with people. Most late afternoons or evenings after a hard day’s work on the farm, you could find Danny and his brother Dale at Bob’s Resort visiting with his many friends, and you could hear his laughter from wherever you were sitting. He had a great sense of humor and anyone who knew him knows his laughter was contagious!
Danny will be greatly missed by the “LT” family, his friends and neighbors. We can say we were honored to call Danny a customer but most importantly a friend. It will never be the same when we stop by Bobs Resort for a drink or supper knowing that Danny is not sitting on the corner bar stool. Cheers to Danny, his love of the ranching business and his love of great Charolais-cross cattle!
Erv Reiser started his career in the cattle business while in his teens, cleaning pens at the Omaha Stockyards. When one of the commission men was absent one day, Erv got his chance to step into that role. He spent the rest of his career doing what he loved – buying and selling premium quality cattle. Thousands of those cattle were Charolais-cross calves.
Erv and the family he represented, A. Glen Kluck Feedlot at Richland, Neb., have a long history of buying the very best Charolais-cross weaned calves that South Dakota and Nebraska have to offer. Thousands of Lindskov-Thiel-sired calves have left your ranches and gone through their hands. When Erv set down at a sale barn, it was a safe bet that he would soon have the final bid on the front-end strings.
Erv was a perfectionist and taught us the importance of presentation and quality. He loved Charolais-cross calves and even after his retirement would often call to see how your calves had sold that year. We were fortunate to have Erv attend our bull sale and customer appreciate events and to give advice and encourage us.
There will never be another Erv, and we were fortunate to be able to call him a business associate, a mentor and more importantly, a friend.
