Your Gift Changes Lives Ways to give that benefit you, your family, and Gow students
Your donation helps Gow students living with dyslexia and similar language-based learning differences thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment. Every gift helps to make Gow’s life-changing programs possible.
Make a Gift to GOW’S ANNUAL FUND
The Annual Fund enables Gow to provide financial aid to 40% of families, retain qualified faculty, safely maintain our campus, and provide dynamic programming. Please consider a one-time donation or recurring monthly gift. (Just $25 per month equals a $300 annual donation!) To give, visit https://www.gow.org/support-gow.
Include GOW IN YOUR WILL
Making a Planned Gift is simple, provides tax benefits for you and your heirs, and gives you the peace of mind to know that your favorite people and charities are taken care of when you pass away. You can designate a set amount or percentage of your estate, and if your intentions should change, you can alter your will. Your gift can be unrestricted (so Gow can use it where needed most) or restricted to scholarship, endowment, or a favorite department. You can create a fund in your own name or to honor someone special.
If you have already included Gow in your will, please tell the Development Office and we can recognize you as a Wolbach Planned Giving Society member.
Creating your will is easy and can take just 20 minutes. Best of all, there is no cost to you. Just visit www.freewill.com, and their step-by-step online tool will help you make a will, including a charitable gift to Gow, quickly and easily.
To Make a Gift to Gow in Your Will By including just one sentence, you can complete your gift. Ask your attorney to review and include the following wording in your will: “I give and bequeath to The Gow School (Tax ID# 16-1034793), located in South Wales, New York, the sum of $______ OR ______% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.”
OTHER WAYS TO GIVE Sign Up for AmazonSmile
Visit www.AmazonSmile.com to designate Gow as your charity of choice. Each time you shop, Amazon will automatically donate a portion of your purchase to Gow.
Donate a Life Insurance Policy
If you have paid off an insurance policy, you can donate it or name Gow as the beneficiary. If you pay the premiums, you can receive a tax deduction. You could also sell an unneeded insurance policy and donate the proceeds, earning an immediate tax deduction.
Donate Your IRA
If you are age 70 1/2 and have to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA, you can donate it to Gow. This donation will reduce your adjusted gross income and tax burden.
Make Gow a Beneficiary of Your Retirement Plan
If Gow is the beneficiary of your retirement plan, this will eliminate estate and income taxes on the plan assets. If you name Gow as a beneficiary, at your death, 100% goes to Gow. We would love to answer your questions and help you make a gift to Gow. Please contact Gow’s Director of Development, Gayle Hutton, at 716.687.2074 or email ghutton@gow.org for more information. We encourage you to consult your professional advisors to determine which giving options are most appropriate for you. Page 4

VIEW FROM THE TOP Headmaster M. Bradley Rogers, Jr. Dear Friends, And what a year it has been! There has never been a more important time to say thank you. As you will note in our Donor Appreciation Report, numerous generous gifts have helped Gow continue its mission of providing a life-changing education for students in a safe and supportive learning environment. Our donors make this critical work possible. I am thankful for our students, faculty, staff, parents, families, and trustees who believe in our program and are working together to make this year a success. To guide us, we followed CDC guidelines and coordinated with local health department officials to create a comprehensive health and safety plan. If you would like to view it, these documents are available on Gow’s website at www.gow.org.
A Conversation with Headmaster Brad Rogers and Jaheim Johnson ‘21, Student Council President JJ: Many people are working to make this a successful school year. Tell us about that.
BR: There are so many on our team! Our students are enjoying being with friends and learning together. Faculty and staff are working with students 24 hours a day to teach, coach, mentor, and coordinate activities. Parents and families are supportive and encouraging, and their belief in Gow means the Please do keep in touch with us. Email the Development world to us. Finally, I am thankful for the members of Gow’s Board of Trustees for their vision and support of the bold and Office (development@gow.org) if you have new independent decisions necessary to best serve our students. contact information or updates to share in the next
Gow Life magazine. Visit our website to learn more about our programming and campus activities. Photos are updated several times a week. With so many development outreach activities, including class calls, Career Conversations, college programming, and our upcoming Parent Power Talks lecture series, there is no better place to find out more.
We hope you enjoy reading this edition of Gow Life and are inspired to become more involved in the School. If you are not yet a donor, please consider making a gift to Gow and including the School in your estate plan. We are so thankful for your belief in our life-changing mission. With sincerest thanks,
JJ: In times of stress, how do you remain healthy and focused? BR: I thrive on being a leader in challenging times. I deploy power within my mind and spirit through meditation and prayer. I also do yoga and walk with my wife in Emery Park each morning. JJ: What experiences prepared you to lead during this time? BR: I grew up in a big family with little brothers. My mom and dad would often leave me in charge of safety. I didn’t always appreciate this role, but know it prepared me for life’s unexpected hurdles. No matter what, just as I did when I was a kid, I want to be prepared to gather others and make decisions that protect their welfare. I view this as my role and am thankful to my parents for instilling a sense of responsibility in me at a young age. JJ: What are the three tips you can offer to stay healthy?
M. Bradley Rogers, Jr. Headmaster
www.gow.org
BR: Attitude is everything. We must be kind and respect each other. We have to take responsibility for our destiny. I know our Gow community is going to emerge from these challenges more robust and better than ever.

THE GOW SUMMER ADVENTURE Five weeks of learning and lifelong friends Gow’s five-week Summer Adventure was a resounding success. With evolving government directives, Gow was pleased when New York State officials ultimately permitted day camps and summer programs for students with learning disabilities to open. Adhering to Erie County Health Department guidance, campers and staff were required to wear masks and were assigned to cohorts for meals and activities. Taking advantage of Gow’s picturesque 125acre campus, teachers held classes outside in Adirondack chairs. Students took nature walks by the creek, hiked in the woods, and played tennis, basketball, and Gaga-ball. Most importantly, they made lifelong friends. We are already looking forward to next summer! If you know someone who might want to learn more about Gow Summer Programs, please visit https://www.gow.org/ summer-programs/gsspadmissions. Thank you to our Gow campers and staff for sharing their passion for learning, smiles, and enthusiasm. Together, we made The Gow Summer Adventure one to remember! www.gow.org

A day to remember! Commencement 2020 was a wonderful celebration of Gow’s 35 graduates. Not everyone could join in person because of travel restrictions, but 17 students and their families journeyed to South Wales on July 17. Graduation gowns and diplomas were sent to those unable to come so those students could record their senior speeches at home. The ceremony was livestreamed, so Gow families around the world could participate. An enormous 200-foot tent allowed for social distancing at the Senior Dinner and Commencement ceremony. We are so proud of the Class of 2020 and are thankful that we had this opportunity to celebrate as a community and recognize their determination, positive attitudes, and accomplishments. We wish them the best of luck and are proud to welcome them to the Gow Alumni Association! Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

CAMPUS NEWS
You make Gow’s vital work possible! Thank you to all the people listed in our Appreciation Report: our donors, volunteers, and those who have joined our vitual events. You make such a difference! Thanks to generous donors, Gow exceeded its $400,000 Annual Fund goal, hosted a Giving Thursday campaign, raised $62,000 to buy a new Gow bus, purchased items on Gow’s Wishlist, and awarded two million dollars in scholarships to forty percent of families. We are grateful for your Gow enthusiasm. Due to COVID-19, we pivoted to virtual programming in the spring. We created Class Calling programs, Career Conversations, and An Inside Look at College Admissions for our families. With a focus on connecting alumni, friends, and families, these programs have engaged more people than ever. Thank you for being part of Gow and for supporting us during this challenging time. Your belief in Gow makes a world of difference to all of us. Please stay safe and be well!

STRONGER TOGETHER The Gow Connection Series
When the world began quarantining last spring, we realized that it was more important than ever to connect our Gow community. While we had to cancel several in-person alumni and parent events around the country scheduled for spring and summer, we launched a series of online networking events. These fun gatherings via Zoom have proven to be a powerful way to connect alumni, parents, families, current students, and faculty. We hosted Gow Class Calls during April and May, and more than 600 alumni joined the fun. These calls provided a chance to reconnect with classmates, share job and family updates, tell fun stories, and hear more about all the good things happening at Gow today. The calls were such a success that we are scheduling them again now. To see the upcoming Class Call schedule,

visit Gow’s website at https://www.gow. org/support-gow/gows-connection-series. As a reminder, please send your current email to development@gow.org to receive your Class Call invitation! During these Class Calls, we learned that many alumni worked in similar professions and were interested in networking. We created an 11-week Career Conversation Series so alumni could share more about their fascinating careers in engineering, medicine, the arts, aviation, robotics, and more. These one-hour weekly presentations provided a chance for current students, parents, families, faculty, and alumni to get to know each other, ask questions, and learn about a range of careers. A list of speakers and featured occupations are listed below. Video links to all Career Conversations are archived on Gow’s website.
To assist Gow students and families who could not meet in person with Gow’s College Counseling Office this spring, we offered a five-week summer series entitled An Inside Look at College Admissions. This series provided advice about choosing the right college, psychoeducational evaluations, and creating a compelling essay and application. This fall, as travel restrictions have made it difficult for families and students to visit colleges, we have invited representatives from 20 colleges to meet families and students virtually to share their insights. Thank you for embracing the Gow Connection Series. We hope these networking opportunities bring our dedicated Gow community even closer together.

ALUMNI Spotlight
BRUCE BYERS ‘73
“I have dedicated my career to photographing moments in time–those fleeting and captivating moments capturing ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” Bruce Byers ‘73 has been fascinated with
photography since he bought his first camera in London in 1964. Born in Reno, NV, Bruce is the son of a preacher. His family followed the church to Northwest Connecticut and then to Columbia County, New York. Struggling academically, Bruce heard about Gow from his mother’s childhood friend, Alice, former Headmaster David Gow’s wife. Of his two-year stay, he says, “Gow was transformative and introduced me to a whole new life. There was a darkroom in the old Art Building, where I developed my love for creating visual images.” His love of photography led him to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and then to New York City, where he opened a studio in 1978. Bruce focused on advertising and corporate work, which included assignments that led to several unique personal projects. Highlights included filming a 24-hour series on the USS Nimitz and a 14year “Day in the Life” series about Sherman, Connecticut residents for a series of shows. Bruce also traveled with Healing the Children Northeast to document physicians providing medical work in Cambodia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Middle East, Sri Lanka, China, and the West Bank. Bruce’s latest photographic journey started quite by accident. He writes, “At 7 p.m. on April 14, 2020, the nurses of Lenox Hill Hospital at Lexington and 77th Street in New York City flooded out of the hospital during their shifts for relief from the constant level of stress. I caught them spontaneously on camera that night as New York City erupted in cheers for the healthcare workers, a nightly ritual that most nurses couldn’t hear when they were inside the hospital. I intended to photograph them as unique human beings swept into a global crisis. Their portraits are a tangible way to say, ‘I see you. I appreciate you. You are valued.’ I returned the next night with a print of each nurse I photographed and gave them to the nurses as unexpected gifts, reinforcing the fact that they mattered. Each nurse was uplifted and happy in the moment. The city continued to cheer every evening as a
public affirmation. The nurses’ photographic portraits are a way to reinforce and acknowledge the essential and lifesaving roles they played for more than 223,000 New Yorkers. Taking these photos turned into a 12-week-long ritual for the nurses and me; I have photographed over 500 healthcare workers and given over 2,500 images to them as personal portraits and displays in the hospital.” During this 14-week project, Bruce created more than 10,000 images. The nurses’ union, captivated by these photos, hired him to create a book called Frontline Nurses of COVID-19 and to photograph many of their 1,300 nurses. To purchase a copy of this book, please contact Bruce. Bruce continues, “As a professional photographer, I have traveled the world and documented 15 medical missions to help children and families in other parts of the world. I have captured that same story of heroism here in the U.S. for Flashes of Home (children with cancer) and St. Baldrick’s Children with Cancer in NYC. I have dedicated my career to photographing moments in time–those fleeting and captivating moments capturing ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
