VIEW FROM THE TOP Headmaster M. Bradley Rogers, Jr.

Dear Friends,

And what a year it has been! This is the ideal opportunity to say thank you. We are grateful for a Gow community that believes in our mission and gives generously; students and families who embrace Gow’s on-campus, in-person learning environment; faculty and staff who creatively inspire and mentor; Development and Admissions Offices that are connecting in new ways; and Gow Trustees who lead with a steady hand and bold vision for our future. How fortunate we are.

With our students back on campus for the 2021-22 academic year, I am inspired to tell you about some professional and personal news. As I recently shared with the Chair of our Board of Trustees, Skip Wilday, I plan to retire as Gow’s sixth Headmaster at the close of the 202223 academic year. For nearly two decades, this opportunity has truly been a professional and personal calling. I am deeply grateful and humbled to teach, lead, and coach Govians. I love this school and all it strives to do for our students and families.

During the next 21 months, the Board, under the leadership of Trustee Mary Ann Coulson, will engage a national firm in a search for a new Head of The Gow School. For me, I plan to finish strong. We have much to accomplish. We are entering the self-study portion of our 10-year accreditation cycle with the New York State Association of Independent Schools, and I am excited about Gow’s ambitious $8 million, 24-month Capital Campaign to build a new Main Building. Originally a barn when Gow was established in 1926, Main has been our utility facility. It has served us well for nearly 100 years, but we know it is time to replace this building. This space, expected to be completed in 2025, will feature 10 larger and more flexible Reconstructive Language classrooms, an elevator to ensure accessibility for all students, a new health clinic, a Little Seniors entrepreneurial class store with an outdoor patio overlooking Cazenovia Creek, a dedicated Speech and Language classroom, and more.

Thanks to the generosity of those donors who are listed in this magazine’s Annual Report, and the fiscal discipline of the School and Trustees, Gow has no debt and a significant $26 million endowment. This enables Gow to hire and retain exceptional faculty, provide scholarships to 43 percent of families, maintain our campus, and purchase academic and athletic equipment. We are so thankful to our families, alumni, and friends for their financial support and belief in the life-changing mission of Gow.

Please keep in touch with us. Email the Development Office (development@gow.org) if you have new contact information or updates to share in the next Gow Life magazine. Visit our website to learn more about our programming and campus activities. Photos are updated several times a week. With so many development outreach activities, including class calls, Career Conversations, college programming, and our Parent Power Talk lecture series, there is no better place to be energized by all that is happening at Gow.

We hope you enjoy reading this edition of Gow Life and are inspired to become more involved in the School. If you are not yet a donor, please consider giving to Gow and including the School in your estate plan. We are so thankful for your belief in our life-changing mission.

Our Bold Vision:

THE GOW MAIN BUILDING

A MESSAGE FROM HEADMASTER M. BRADLEY ROGERS, JR.

As Gow’s sixth headmaster, it is my responsibility to prepare our school for the next century. To ensure that Gow remains a leader in education for students with learning differences, I am inspired to share more about our transformational Main Building project. As we launch this $8 million, 24-month Capital Campaign, please consider a gift to support this initiative. Your generosity and every gift will truly make a difference!

What an honor to share our vision for a new Main Building! This will be twice the size of the current building, but have a similar look and feel. Located on the same site, our new Main Building will remain the home of Gow’s signature Reconstructive Language Program. This center of learning will have 10 larger and more flexible classrooms, a health and counseling suite with triage and infirmary spaces to offer more services and privacy for boys and girls, modernized administrative offices, an elevator, a Little Seniors store run by students in our entrepreneurship program, a picturesque patio and seating area overlooking Cazenovia Creek, a dedicated Speech and Language classroom, and so much more.

Gow students succeed because of a vibrant academic curriculum and small classes taught by highly trained and compassionate faculty. Current classrooms are too small and restrictive to accommodate the multisensory learning that works best for students with learning challenges. Our new Main Building will better support the academic, social, and health and wellness needs of Gow students and faculty.

Originally a barn situated behind the Gow family house, our founder, Peter Gow, Jr., moved Main to its current location when he started the school in 1926. In addition to classrooms, Main has served as a dorm, cafeteria, locker and shower room, study hall, administrative offices, infirmary, lobby study area by the stone fireplace, and home to both the Govian bookstore and Little Seniors. The new Main Building will retain some key historic features and house an archival collection of photos and memorabilia documenting our rich history.

As you read more, please consider a one-time gift, a bequest, or a 3-5 year pledge to help build and endow a new Main Building. Gayle Hutton, Gow’s Director of Development, would love to work with you to help structure a gift that benefits you, your family, and The Gow School. You can reach Gayle at ghutton@gow.org or 716.687.2074. Thank you!

THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE - Engaging our Gow Community

Dear Friends,

This has been a year of discovery. While challenging, COVID has also offered opportunities to communicate in new ways. With dozens of Zoom class calls, Parent Power Talks, our Inside Look at College series, virtual open houses with our Admissions team, and many hours of inspiring phone conversations with alumni around the world, we are more connected than ever.

With time to reflect on the past year, we realize the importance of friends old and new. Our class calls rekindled friendships and a renewed appreciation for long-ago Gow experiences. There is nothing better than shared stories that have grown more meaningful with time. We are so grateful for our alumni and families and their passion for this life-changing school. We couldn’t do our work without you. This edition of Gow Life includes our Donor Appreciation Report that recognizes those who have given generously to support our Annual Fund and other giving initiatives. We are most grateful for these gifts and your belief in our programming. Your generosity enables Gow to provide scholarships, innovative programming, and a safe and nurturing campus for Govians to call home. Thanks to prudent fiscal management and an engaged and thoughtful Board of Trustees, Gow has a $26 million endowment and remains debt-free.

As always, I welcome your questions and comments at ghutton@gow.org or 716.687.2074.

Many thanks for all you do for Gow!

MEMBERSHIP IN THE WOLBACH LEGACY SOCIETY: WHY IT MATTERS

Donors sometimes say: “Gow is included in my will. Do I have to share the details?” That’s a great question! A will is confidential, and while you are under no obligation to tell us more, for several reasons, we hope you will.

REASON #1: We can start saying “Thank you!” for a gift we won’t receive for many years. When you share information about your bequest intention, we can welcome you to The Wolbach Legacy Society.

REASON #2: We can make sure that we understand your intentions and will properly allocate your gift.

REASON #3: We can better plan for the future. Knowing about bequests helps Gow set goals and position the school for success. Whether your Planned Gift is unrestricted (for use where needed most) or restricted to scholarship or programs, knowing about your bequest is invaluable for us in meeting our long-term planning goals.

THANK YOU to those donors who have created a Named Fund or included Gow in their Estate Plan!

THE WOLBACH LEGACY SOCIETY Making a Planned Gift today to shape Gow’s future

In his own words: FRED BERNARD ‘60

In the words of Fred Bernard ‘60, everybody has his or her own story of The Gow School. For Fred, his story began after sophomore year at his high school in Cincinnati. He was struggling academically and, after a learning assessment, he was diagnosed with a “reading problem.” The Gow School was recommended and, within days, Fred’s bags were packed for South Wales. At Gow, he met Headmaster Norm Howard, who soon became his mentor.

“Mr. Howard tested me for a day and told me that I was a perfect candidate for The Gow School, which was a relief to my father and me,” said Fred. “My story of Gow is that I went into the 11th grade reading at between a 6th and 7th grade level. When I graduated two years later, I was reading at a 12th grade level. It was an amazing turnaround,” he added.

After Gow, Fred attended the University of Colorado. He left after two years and joined the Army, where he worked in Army intelligence. After three years in the service, he returned to school and graduated from Colorado College with honors.

Fred married his wife, Ann, and began his career at Proctor and Gamble. Within a few years, he bought a mom-andpop hardware distributorship and grew it from seven employees to 28. After selling the company, he embarked on a successful 25-year real estate career in Denver and Vail, retiring last year. Ann and Fred have a son, who is a Pediatric Neurologist at Children’s Hospital in Denver, and twin 17-year-old grandchildren. Fred enjoys road biking in the mountains, skiing, and golf.

Throughout the years, Fred has generously supported Gow, but said he wanted to do something more substantial. He worked with Gayle Hutton, Gow’s Director of Development, to establish a Planned Gift. “I hope that my Planned Gift will allow Gow to do something important because, long story short, it enabled me to move forward and to have a good life and successful career. I consider myself a very lucky guy,” said Fred.

To learn more about including Gow in your estate plan, please visit gow.org/support-gow/planned-giving or contact Gow’s Development Office at 716.687.2075. Thank you!

In their own words: Why We Give to Gow

Dr. Brad Mazon and Mr. Tom Coates, Parents of Viktor ‘15

“Our son, Viktor, attended Gow and graduated in 2015. As a family, Gow was a tremendous experience, and we have always wanted to remain involved and to give back. When we received the last Gow Life magazine with the Wishlist and details about giving, it was a no-brainer. The theater program needed a light board, and that appealed to us.

Making a donation comes from the heart. When one is able to give back, it’s important to connect the heart and the pocketbook. We are honored to help Gow and the students who will benefit from our Wishlist gift.”

GOW ADVENTURES IN COSTA RICA!

This past spring, Gow was presented with an intriguing opportunity. To take full advantage of Gow’s two-week Spring Break, accommodate those who were unable to travel home because of COVID restrictions, and provide a memorable adventure for interested students, we planned a trip to Costa Rica. To maintain COVID protocols, the dozen students and two faculty chaperones traveled together, participated in testing before flights, and adhered to local health department guidelines.

Over the years, Gow has partnered with Travel for Teens, a tour company committed to inspiring youth and providing transformative travel experiences. As they had run a previous trip to Costa Rica in January for another school, we asked them to plan a safe, fun, and educational trip for our Gow students. We were thrilled with the result!

Raina G. ‘23 said, “After months of being at Gow, it was a great opportunity to get off campus and see a part of the world I had never visited before.” She added, “The trip highlights were propelling down a waterfall, zip lining through the rain forest canopy, getting to know the local guides that traveled with us, and eating the freshest fruit I have ever had.”

Matt Fisher, Associate Director of Admissions, and Gayle Hutton, Director of Development, served as faculty chaperones. Gayle commented, “This trip provided the chance for us to taste new foods, appreciate unique cultures, and challenge ourselves to try new things like zip lining, tubing, surfing, snorkeling, horseback riding, repelling, and so much more. I am proud of the students for immersing themselves in the people and beauty of Costa Rica, and for appreciating every moment of this amazing trip.”

Meet Gow’s New Board of Trustees Chair SKIP

Gow: How did you discover Gow?

SW: For many years, I worked with current Trustee, Mary Ann Coulson, whose son, Adam Kendrick, graduated in 2004. When my daughter, Courtney, was diagnosed with dyslexia and was starting to struggle in school, Mary Ann immediately pointed us toward Gow. Thank goodness! My wife, Greta, and I have three children who have distinct learning styles and all three are now Gow graduates. Gow gives students the confidence to work through their learning differences and the courage to find success in the world after Gow.

Gow: What would you like to share about your children?

SW: An investment in education is one of the most important investments a family can make. Our daughter, Courtney, attended Gow for grades 10 through 12, and was the first female boarding student. I am proud she was a pioneer in our coeducational initiative. She was at the all too familiar “point of pain” that many families face, and at Gow, she learned how to find her voice and the remediation she needed. Trek is a Gow “lifer,” attending from grades 7 through 12. He benefited greatly from the small class sizes, and teachers who tailored the curriculum to him. Oksana attended Gow for three years and graduated this spring. She has dyslexia, coupled with comprehension challenges, and fully utilized Gow’s technology. For my three children, I recognized that the public school options could not meet their needs. Gow gave them the skills and confidence they needed to succeed.

Gow: With two seniors who graduated in May, could you reflect on their last school year?

SW: Gow had the vision and courage to perservere during COVID, and to overcome challenges. I am proud of the normalcy the school was able to offer the students, especially the seniors. We are so grateful that Gow had the students on campus for in-person learning.

From a parent and family perspective, what does Gow’s current theme of “Success and Belonging” look like to you?

SW: Gow is a place filled with peers who help students become educational advocates and support their mental health. At Gow, students learn tools that prepare them for life.

Gow: The Main Building is Gow’s next big project. Why is this important for the present and future of the School?

SW: The Main Building is the central focus of the school and home of the signature Reconstructive Language program. The current building has served the School well for nearly a century, but it is time to build a new structure that fully meets the needs of our community. This new Main Building will feature 10 classrooms, a modern infirmary for boys and girls, an elevator to make the building accessible for all, and a larger student-run store, Little Seniors. I believe this project is vital to meet the needs of our Gow community for the next hundred years.

Gow: As a Trustee and parent, what does Gow mean to you?

SW: As a Board member, I have gained great respect for the School and the way it is run. I have learned so much from my colleagues on the Board who are passionate about Gow. As a parent, I see how it has completely changed the trajectory of our family and my children’s lives.

A Year to Remember

When New York State closed schools in March last year, Gow transitioned to virtual learning in just two days. Using technology to unite students in 11 different time zones, Gow came together to meet this historic challenge and expanded the student experience.

Technology Brings Learning Home

Each student is issued a laptop, complete with programming designed to assist those with learning differences. All classrooms are equipped with Dell 75” 4K interactive monitors, mini webcams, and microphones to provide enhanced teaching and learning experiences for faculty and students.

In March, students took their laptops home and seamlessly continued learning together. Using Microsoft Teams, students followed their daily schedule remotely, Mr. Rogers hosted

all-school daily assembly, and advisors conferenced weekly with students and their families.

Gow students are ever resilient. During daily assembly, students joined meetings early to catch up with friends, Student Council coordinated Color War activities, including biking, walking and plank challenges, and students organized a Gaming Club so they could play remotely. We are proud of our Govians for turning challenges into unique opportunities.

ROBOTICS COMPETITION INSPIRES GOW CREATIVITY AND TEAMWORK

For the first time, the Gow Robotics Team competed in the Southwestern Pennsylvania BotsIQ program in April.

The team, made up of 12 seniors and led by faculty advisors Joe Gullo, Physics and Robotics faculty, and Jeff Poblocki, Director of Technology and Robotics faculty, took second place on their competition day and earned top ten honors overall.

“Competing in BotsIQ was a great experience and we are thrilled to be part of this dynamic competition. We are already signed up for next year! This competition brings together robotics, teamwork, and mentorship in a challenging and fun way,” said Joe Gullo.

Organized by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Foundation, BotsIQ strives to introduce high school students to manufacturing. More than 10,000 students have participated in this STEM competition where competitors build 15-pound robots that then battle for victory.

Gow has a long and established robotics program. Started in 2001, it was inspired by Trey Roski ‘84, the creator of BattleBots, a nationally syndicated robotics competition program on Discovery. With Gow’s world-class facility and exceptional programming, many Gow graduates have been inspired to pursue careers in robotics,

Michel Conklin, Executive Director of BotsIQ, delivered Gow’s award to Robotics faculty advisor Joe Gullo on campus

manufacturing, and engineering. Thanks to Trey and the BattleBots team for inspiring so many young Govian minds!

After 19 years at Gow, Kirk Rhodes, Ph.D. has accepted a position as Learning Enhancement and CTE Success Coordinator at Rend Lake College in Ina, IL. Known for his passion for history and motivational modified lacrosse coaching, Kirk was this year’s recipient of the Lowell Lundell Excellence in Teaching Award. This honor, voted on by faculty colleagues, is presented each year to the faculty member who, through dedication, concern, and skill, has demonstrated the highest qualities of a professional teacher.

Kirk joined Gow in 2002 as a history teacher and served as a dorm parent, Culture Committee faculty advisor, and Head Coach of the Modified Lacrosse team. Kirk earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Walden University, M.P.A. in Public Administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and B.S. in Political Science and Government at the University of Central Missouri. He is an Army veteran who was stationed for eight years at Ft. Gordon, GA.

“Gow taught me many lessons that I am taking on to my next chapter,” said Kirk. “The school’s motto of ‘Bear and Dare’ rings true - to do your best and not to let yourself be intimidated. The families I work with at Rend College are much like our Govian families. They are looking to belong and be recognized. Gow has set me up to be successful and to help more people.”

We wish Kirk all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for serving as a role model and mentor to so many students. As one student commented, “Dr. Rhodes empowered me to succeed when I never thought I would amount to anything because of my learning differences. To the man who inspired me to become the person I am today, it is with deepest, heartfelt gratitude that I say thank you.”

Summer Fun at Gow

Gow Alumni serve as GSSP Counselors

For five weeks this summer, 107 campers from 21 states and seven countries came to campus for The Gow School Summer Program (GSSP). GSSP offers academic programming for children with learning differences and summer fun for both day and boarding students.

A typical day at GSSP might include a Reconstructive Language class, coding and computing, and study skills in the morning, followed by Zumba, tennis lessons, and mountain biking in the afternoon. Led by Matt Fisher (Director) and Jody Cendrowski (Associate Director), GSSP faculty use Gow’s renowned teaching methods to empower students in the classroom. Traditional camp activities and weekend adventures round out the fun. A highlight of this year’s Summer Program was the weekend trip to Lake George, where students enjoyed the arcade, amusements, and water park. To learn more, visit gow.org/summer-programs.

As Jody commented, “This summer, the faculty and staff really stepped up. They came up with new ideas to keep the students engaged and many classes moved outside to utilize every inch of our campus. It was a delight to have 107 inspired campers learning with new friends. We can’t wait for next summer!”

ALUMNI Spotlight

JENNA ROSSER ‘18

I was hardly surprised when word came over the transom that Jenna Rosser of Elma, a 2018 graduate of The Gow School and a sophomore at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), had already achieved some notable successes at RIT.

She had been a capable, personable, and motivated student of mine at Gow during my tenure there as part of the English faculty, contributing thoughtful articles to the school’s newspaper. What surprised me, however, was that these successes had come as a member of RIT’s Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) off-road vehicle team, nicknamed RIOT RACING, that had just returned from a very successful outing in Louisville. That seemed a stretch for an interior design major.

“Not really, Mr. Ohler,” she said when we talked. “I grew up fourwheeling and watching the roundy-roundies (her term for NASCAR) with my dad and brother. And my brother was on the Baja SAE team at the University of Rochester a few years ago, so I knew RIT had a team. I joined as part of the design team; it’s been a great experience.” In her second year, she became an officer of the club, keeping track of the activities of the club’s 70 members as secretary.

The Society of Automotive Engineers sponsors the Baja SAE series each year, attracting teams of universitylevel engineering students from across the country, with a few International teams competing as well. These teams design and build off-road vehicles that, over two days of competition, are tested on dirt tracks, hills and obstacle courses that offer the severest terrain and most extreme challenges any vehicle might encounter. The cars are judged in several categories:

acceleration, maneuverability, climbing ability, suspension, endurance and overall dynamics. In the April event in Arizona, RIOT RACING’s R21 finished first with 737 out of a thousand possible points, besting second-place Virginia Tech by 55 points. In May’s Louisville competition, RIT won second place out of 52 entrants, garnering 702 points to the University of Michigan’s 712. Along the way, they took top honors in the Suspension and Overall Dynamics categories. Photos and videos of RIT’s R21 are on Instagram at @ritbaja.

“Most of the team,” Jenna said when I asked about her role, “are mechanical engineers and electrical engineers, designing the structural and power train components of the vehicle. But as an interior design student, I bring a different perspective to the project. In designing the interior of the vehicle like the seats, body panels, steering

team’s shop and has to keep up with her other classes as well. No doubt, though, her involvement will be a help when it comes time to search for a job.

This summer, Jenna worked for her family’s business, Lemur Construction, run by her parents Jeff and Dawn Rosser. She’ll continue with RIOT RACING this year as she heads toward her interior design degree. Having grown up in construction and having spent time working in the office of the family business, she finds that she enjoys designing interior spaces, especially hospitality spaces like restaurants.

“I appreciate the psychological impact of interior spaces. It’s so far beyond simply decorating; it’s how people react and can be helped by the design of interior spaces.”

She hopes to continue on for a master’s degree in architecture after graduating from RIT in 2023.

As for her time at The Gow School, she echoes the words of so many alumni: “Dyslexia can be such a limiting factor. Without the opportunity to go to Gow, I would never have gotten to RIT or to college at all. I am very grateful.”

wheels, we can concentrate not only on aesthetics but on ergonomics— the comfort and functionality of the driver compartment. The aesthetics don’t get us points in the competition, but they help attract sponsors and give us a sense of pride in our finished product.”

The RIT vehicle as it made its way through a course. The creations are judged on a variety of factors.

Thank you to Rick Ohler and The East Aurora Advertiser for permission to reprint this article. Rick Ohler taught English at Gow in 2018.

Jenna gets no course credit for her Baja work, even though she spends many evenings and weekends in the

Elma resident Jenna Rosser, sitting on the tire, was part of Rochester Institute of Technology’s Baja SAE team.

No kindergarten for me we went right at it

Beginning as we crossed East Tenth and my brother mocking me ‘You can’t even spell dog,” and this before it turned to God in the first grade or sew or so their or there way before that

What does it mean I can’t spell dog I wondered hoping my shoes did not need tying I was working on that stuck between dog and God and trying to learn to skip foreshadowing my troubles with dancing beyond a mechanically reproduced box step life would be so perfect if I didn’t have to go to school.

Dog. God. God. Dog. First grade, no big difference. Spell one, get the other.

1950s

Peter Frenzel ‘54 writes, “My best memory is of Norm Howard teaching me phonics and learning how to spell. At that time, I was a hopeless dyslexic but all that changed with the help of Mr. Howard. On the athletic fields, hitting a home run and scoring a goal with a soccer ball are memorable feats. Skiing was also a favorite and I’ll never forget the ski hill. Many years have elapsed since ‘54 at The Gow School but I have fond memories of being a part of the student body, and know that South Wales was good for me and my classmates.” Peter and his wife, Alene, live in Morgantown, IN.

Bill Mollet ‘56 and his wife, Nancy, live in Massillon, OH. After Gow, Bill graduated from Nichols College and married the week after graduation. He and Nancy have three daughters and for many years, lived in Tennessee where Bill worked in the signage business. Bill and Nancy moved back to OH when they retired. 1

Bill Hoke ‘58 and his wife, Patty, recently took a 38-day, 7,004-mile road trip around the country. Bill’s poem “First Day of School” is shared at left. 2

Peter Knudsen ‘59 and David Fuger ‘64 recently had dinner in Harbor Springs, MI. Peter and his wife, Judy, live in Palm Beach, FL in the winter and Harbor Springs, MI in the summer. 3

1960s

Geoffrey Grant ‘60 writes, “Education is never cheap, but it becomes a bargain if we consider the alternative. With Gow's help, I am in a position to make a small contribution to keep the school operating. Dyslexia is a mixed blessing for sure, but it does convey a few advantages that no one ever discusses. Sometimes it provides a unique way of seeing things, of problem-solving, and is often associated with substantial intellectual powers. Of course, language difficulties are always there. I would still be wiped out in the first round of a fifth-grade spelling bee, but then my computer regularly backs me up when I make a typing error, yeah right, typing error. When I was at Gow, I took two years of Spanish and struggled mightily with it. I was the only student in the school taking Spanish, so was privately tutored. For my M.S. degree, I was required to have a foreign language, and of course, I choose Spanish having a slight brush with it. It took me another year of study before I could pass a reading, translation test which with luck and concentration, I managed to do. I can still read a little of it but never could speak the language. Thank you to Gow for changing my life!” Jeff and his wife, Sue, live in Brookings, SD. Their son, Jeremy Grant ‘90, graduated from Gow and lives in Salida, CO with his family.

Robert Muir ‘62 (pictured left), enjoys living and sailing in Annapolis, MD. He and his wife, Patti, have two daughters, Lisa and Katina, and spend summers in Pointe au Baril, Ontario, Canada. Before retiring, Rob worked in the steel industry for more than 45 years and is proud of the many Habitat for Humanity houses he has helped to build around the world.

Tim Hord ‘63 and his wife, Mary, relocated to Cape Coral, FL from Petosky, MI in August 2020.

David Fuger ‘64 and his wife, Vicki, live in Harbor Springs, MI and in the Bahamas where they enjoy boating and fishing. (Pictured at left with Peter Knudsen ‘59).

Bob Warner ‘64 and his wife, Jill, live in Edwards, CO, where they are avid skiers and hikers. They recently returned from a trip to Mexico, and ten days of hiking in Switzerland and Italy with friends. (Pictured in Chiavenna, Italy).

Tad McKay ‘65 and his wife, Wendy, spend their summers in Leland, MI, and winters in Indian Wells, CA. They have three children who live in SC, NH, and MI with their families. 6

Jeffrey Spoon ‘65 and his wife, Terri, live in Ann Arbor, MI, and Tucson, AZ. They just returned from a trip to OR and WA, where they biked and hiked before visiting one of their six children in Portland, OR. Terri is a retired school principal who tutors young children with reading differences in the Ypsilanti, MI schools. Jeffrey owns a real estate company in MI and enjoys riding his road bike.

Jim Nowak ‘67 is pictured with Wally the Green Monster, the official mascot of the Boston Red Sox. Jim and his wife, Laura, live in Harwich, MA.

Walt Silver ‘67 and his wife, Pat, live in Bath, OH, and Naples, FL. Walt and Pat enjoy traveling in their Corvette and are planning a trip to Philadelphia to visit several historic landmarks and Civil War monuments.

Lyman “Tadd” Stuart ‘68 and his wife of 51 years, Darnell, have four children and five grandchildren. He writes that he recently retired for the second time and published his first book. This book idea came from a phone call he received about how he started and grew his own business. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 20% of U.S. small businesses fail within the first year. By the end of their fifth year, roughly 50% have faltered. “Given that I have been able to keep this business going for over ten years, I felt it would be a good idea to share my approach and learning with others. The book, Sailing Business, is available on Amazon, Kindle and paperback.”

1970s

Dan Crear ‘71 and his wife, Mary, had been living in Baltimore near their daughter and her family and moved back to Minneapolis this summer.

Mike Stowe ‘72 and his wife, Lisa, are moving from Hobe Sound, FL to Western NY where they will be close enough for a Gow visit!

John Barton ‘75 plays hockey at the East Aurora Ice Rink. He writes that he played four years of NCAA Division 3 hockey at Nichols College. John says, “I owe my college hockey career to my parents, as well as Coach Andy Rich who suggested I go to The Gow School.” John and his wife, Greta, recently built a home in East Aurora. John is an avid bird watcher.

Mike Meyer ‘77 and his wife, Debbie, moved to NC from CT in 2020. They bought a brand new house and retired last year. Mike is doing consulting work for the company he previously worked for. Mike and Debbie have four children: Christopher, Timothy, Jessica, and Daniel.

Jonathan Siegel ‘79 lives in Chagrin Falls, OH, and has two children, a daughter, Carly, who lives in Tampa, and a son, Carson, in high school.

REMEMBERING LINK LUNDELL

The Death of a Schoolmaster

For some people, teaching is a job. For others like Lowell L. Lundell (1931-2020), the unforgettable “Link,” it becomes a mission. Schools – and the world - need both types. Link would have been the last man on the planet to exalt himself, but he was one of the missionaries, devoted to his work, his family, and his beloved Sally. Link was exactly what he looked like: the model, the walking archetype of the schoolmaster, 20th century style.

Several headmasters have run the operations of the school during Link’s three-decades-plus tenure as the patient master of the youngest students in Green Dorm. Whether or not it was his title, Link ran the Campus. He was a steadying hand on the tiller, one of the true legends of The Gow School.

It’s not easy to get groups of young people to do something they would rather not, like settle down or study, but it’s a vital skill for those who work at Gow. Most manage through simply being appreciated, plus the general support of the system. For just about anyone, it takes some reminding to still a frisky Study Hall. With Link, it was instantaneous. He got that kind of respect. In fact, everywhere on the Campus, better behavior rippled around his presence like the wake from a pebble dropped in a pool. It wasn’t that people were afraid of Link; they were afraid of letting him down.

The old schoolmaster can set his RL cards down. The last of those thousands of classes have been taught. The students in the dorm will be all right tonight, too. It’s time to bid farewell to Lowell “Link” Lundell, surely weary already of this praise. Besides, he heard it all anyway when he landed where he is now. Those who best bear His mild yoke, they serve Him best.

Thank you to former faculty member Mason Winfield for sharing this reflection. This article has been condensed due to space limitations.

Warren “Peter” Balish ‘85 (August 5, 2021), at his home. Peter was a restaurateur in Washington, DC, and owner of Cleveland Park Bar and Grill, Vida, and Fat Pete’s BBQ. After graduating from Gow, Peter attended Susquehanna University.

Paul Kohan ‘07 (March 23, 2021), at his home in Brooklyn, NY. An attorney, Paul specialized in educational law and served as a Gow School Trustee.
