NEWS

Adopt An Adult Animal Sure, puppies and kitties are fun and snuggly, but did you know that there are several great benefits to bringing home an adult animal instead? Our animal shelter can quickly fill up with older pets in need of a home. These pets are often dropped off at the shelter and are placed in kennels after years of being in a loving home. Instead of overlooking these loving animals, consider some of the great benefits to adopting an adult animal:

What you see is what you get.

When you adopt a kitten or puppy, you don’t know how their personalities will develop. Older animals have already developed a personality that is shining through.

No need to potty train!

For most part, adult animals are already housebroken or littertrained. You won’t have to worry about accidents or spending a lot of time training.

You won’t have to spend a fortune on toys.

Older animals are past the mischievous playful age. Sure, they will appreciate a good bone or catnip, but they won’t need to be constantly entertained.

You will save a life.

Older pets do not get adopted as quickly as younger animals. When you adopt an older animal, you are not only saving its life, but also giving another animal room at the shelter for a chance to find a home. In addition to adult animals, medium to large sized dogs also struggle with finding homes. Larger breeds often get looked over in shelters, leaving them locked in kennels for months at a time. Adopters often think that large dogs need a lot more attention than smaller dogs, or that a large dog would not do well in an apartment.

Empty all water-holding containers in your yard, at least once a week. Children's wading pools, rain barrels, buckets, bird baths and boats are prime examples of mosquito breeding sites. Over-watering and poor irrigation are common producers of mosquitoes. Report standing water to appropriate maintenance personnel. Clean out eaves and down spouts of leaves and other debris that slows drainage. Remember, standing water means mosquitoes. For example, one coffee can full of water has been shown to produce in excess of 10,000 mosquitoes over an entire summer season.

08

LIFE IS GRAND | FALL 2016

Ditches must be kept free of vegetation and other debris to promote rapid drainage, and pond edges should be kept clean of cattails and other aquatic vegetation. This is where mosquito larvae develop and mature.

However, many medium to large breed dogs make great companions and better protectors. Several families adopt larger dogs because the pets often will love and protect their children. In many studies about the differences between small and large dogs, small dogs were reported to be less obedient, slightly more often aggressive or excitable, and more anxious and fearful. People with small dogs also reported a lower level of consistency in their interactions and enforcement of rules than did those with larger pups. So next time you stop by Prairie Paws, remember the numerous advantages of adopting larger and older. These photos are of actual dogs available at Prairie Paws Adoption Center. To see a list of available animals, please visit gptx.org/paws. Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more pictures, fun, events and specials!

To reduce the number of adult mosquitoes in your yard: Keep your lawn mowed as short as is practical. Keep all shrubs and bushes trimmed and pruned to open them up to light and air flow. This will not only give mosquitoes one less place to hide, but will promote growth and vigor in the plant. Cut back all low, dense under-growth surrounding your yard as far as possible. This is where mosquitoes go to hide during the day. Have large trees trimmed to allow sunlight to penetrate dark, damp areas.

: Understanding Your Water Bill

Your City of Grand Prairie monthly water bill adds up the following costs: • Storm Drainage Fee (Fixed charge depending on square footage pays for cleaning, repair, maintenance and improvement of the city’s storm drain system.) • Water (This is a tiered rate based on the amount of water used. The more water you use, the higher your water rate will be.) • Wastewater (Base fee plus variable rate billed on either the winter month average or the current month’s water usage.)

• Trash/Recycling Service (Fixed charge pays for garbage and recycling pickup services.) • Voluntary Donation (You can help those in need keep their water on by automatically adding as little as $1 a month to your water bill through the Water Assistance Program.) • Garbage Tax (This is a State of Texas tax for Real Property Services associated with the removal or collection of garbage.) Why higher water bills in the fall? During the hot months of summer residents typically use more water to keep

lawns green and to fill up swimming pools. Because your water meter is read at the end of the month, the water that you use during July will be reflected on your August or September bill (depending on your billing cycle). That means that in the fall months you might pay more if you used more water during the summer months. How to control costs: The most common causes of high water use are irrigation systems and/or leaks. Check for water leaks and self-audit your irrigation system. Learn more at gptx.org/watersmart

Latrell Shaw

Latrell volunteers for our special events and with the Summit Sassy Jewels. She is always willing to help in any way she can. She always has a big smile and is surrounded by many new friends. Latrell strives to strengthen her legs and to walk more each day with the help of the athletic staff. We are so proud of the progress Latrell has made physically and emotionally and her courage as she started over in her new life in Grand Prairie.

Niki Bryan

Niki started volunteering at the old Senior Center 12 years ago when her parents attended the Nutrition Program. After she lost her parents, Niki is still one of our most consistent and dedicated volunteers. She rides the bus everyday to arrive at the Summit by 7:30 am and takes her place in the Dining Room greeting

and signing in all of the Nutrition participants. She is always happy and always trying to help others, in spite of her physical limitations. Niki volunteers for Summit special events in addition to the Nutrition program. Niki’s courage and upbeat attitude is a priceless example to all Summit members. Thank you Niki!

Judy Gibson

Judy is a survivor of 5 brain aneurysms, and she has incredible determination and a great attitude. She works hard every day and made significant improvements. Judy embodies the word COURAGE in every way. She wasn’t willing to accept a life with physical limitations and is a wonderful example to everyone she meets.

Joe Schmidt

Joe is a stroke at a relatively early age–but that hasn’t stopped him from working hard. After many months in rehab, he joined the Summit and after just 6 short weeks of training, he can now move better WITHOUT his cane. Many members who know his story and the struggles that he has been through look up to Joe as another example of COURAGE. Joe, too, is a huge inspiration to his fellow Summit members.

Betty Lucas

Bettye truly shows that age is just a number. She is 91 years old, but she is constantly improving her fitness. She works out and walks at the Summit almost every day. Members who are 20-30 years younger should take note of Bettye’s positive attitude and determination to always strive to be as physically fit as possible.

Dalworth has a great impact on the community. Just recently a family came to us asking about our programs offered. This family consisted of four lovely girls and their mother who did not speak English. They had moved from Mexico which was a social shock for the young girls. There was a major communication barrier between the family and the staff. During the time our Recreatin Aide Edna and Elianna were the only ones able to translate for the family. With the help of our Supervisor Chris, we were able to have the girls in our After School Program. We helped the girls with their homework, helped adjust their mother to our facility, and helped the girls form friendships with our other young members. I know Dalworth has had a positive impact on this family and the girls because every day they left the Rec Center with a smile on their face. We hope to continue to help those in the community and help change lives. GRANDFUNGP.COM

RECREATION SUCCESS

Let’s Get Growing Intergenerational gardening plants seeds for healthy nutrition by Mariana Espinoza

A seed planted by a park board member in Grand Prairie, Texas, produced not only fruits and vegetables, but a collaborative program that allowed seniors an opportunity to share their knowledge with children who then have a chance to get dirty learning about the food they consume. Intergenerational Gardening Pals developed a partnership among the recreation programming staff, summer campers, the department’s arborist/ horticulturist, and the Summit 50+ Active Adult Center. The program was designed to increase environmental awareness among summer campers, who range in age from 5 to 15, and to develop multigenerational relationships that offer opportunities for learning. Sharing Knowledge Across Generations The Summit is the city’s newest state-ofthe-art 50+ active adult center. Members who take part in the Summit Garden Club do so as one of their hobbies and for exercise. Research has proven that for some, gardening is preferred over other forms of fitness activities because of the reduced stress and pressure compared to other physical activities. Gardening has proven to produce positive results through physical activity and mental agility. The garden club began five years ago when the facility was built, which also includes a greenhouse. Working with the Summit Manager, Linda Long, some members worked to expand programming to grow produce—not only for themselves—but to provide a healthier product for the members in the Summit’s Nutrition Program. Last summer, the garden club—under the vision of park board member Emita Garcia—approached the city’s Parks, Arts, and Recreation Department Director, Rick Herold, who loved the idea of developing an intergenerational gardening program. Intergenerational Gardening Pals was a three-week program that included classroom instruction and hands-on experience.

48

LIFE IS GRAND | FALL 2016

In the first week of the program, Parks Arborist/Horticulturist, Susan Henson, visited each of the recreation centers and taught the summer campers about seeds and planting their own healthy foods. In the second week, campers were transported to the Summit Gardens and Greenhouse for hands-on instruction. Finally, in the third week, campers visited the Kirby Creek Nature Center garden, where they learned about planting seeds and how to grow foods that will make their bodies healthy and strong. The biggest challenge in working with the campers was keeping them cool in the Texas heat, so the program took place in the early morning hours. Some campers said the best part about Intergenerational Gardening was that their “gardeners” knew so much about planting fruits and vegetables! Sixty children participated in this first-time program. The garden club has grown over 467 pounds of produce that was distributed to the needy seniors in the community. Produce, such as lettuce, tomato, cabbage, kale, cilantro, carrots, onions, and potatoes, was given to the Summit Nutrition Program and the Grand Prairie Food Bank. In order to be a Summit Gardner, one must pay a fee of $20 a year and be required to volunteer several hours to maintain the garden and the greenhouse. Some of these volunteer opportunities include working at Grand Prairie’s Farmer’s Market, where their produce is sold as well as ornamental plants. Funds that the gardeners raise are used to pay for supplies. The garden club would like to expand the amount of produce disseminated as well as to increase knowledge among residents about the benefits of eating healthy. Strengthening The Community Intergeneration Gardening is one example of how young and old can work together to ensure a healthy future. Grand Prairie has always been an agricultural community, and is known for being the third-oldest Tree City USA in the state for the past 32 years.

This year, the department’s arborist/ horticulturist instructed over 400 people through six classes in the spring in vegetable gardening, landscape design, native and adaptive plant material, soil, insects, and organic gardening. The arborist/ horticulturist also has a monthly television show called “Let’s Get Growing” that teaches residents how to care for their landscapes and vegetable gardens in order to increase environmental awareness. The city is part of a unique ecosystem called the Crosstimbers, the area where the prairies meet the forest lands. This area includes southeastern Kansas across Central Oklahoma to Central Texas. However, Grand Prairie does experience challenges as a result of the harsh environmental conditions. Grand Prairie is trying to maintain its prairies and increase its canopy cover through a strong commitment to Tree City USA. After all, research has proven that life is “20 percent cooler” under trees. Gathering Supplies And Getting Started Using curriculum material from the department’s arborist/horticulturist and groups, such as the Texas Forest Service, the Arbor Day Foundation, and the International Society of Arboriculture, the program was a hit! Costs associated with the program included the purchase of seeds, water, and fertilizer, securing instruction locations, and garden maintenance costs. Intergenerational Gardening was successful because the children were newly exposed to the gardens, which allowed them to plant seeds, watch them grow, and work as a team. One recommendation for anyone looking to start a summer Intergenerational Gardening program is to build a group of volunteers willing to spend the time and learn to work with children. Additional benefits can be reaped by beginning with seeds and carrying through to harvesting the fruit so the children can see the beginning and end of their gardening project. Triathlon Makes an Itty-Bitty Deviation

SUCCESS

Utilizing exisiting park amenities for non-tradtional programming by Mariana Espinoza The Charley Taylor Splash Pad in Grand Prairie, Texas, is an interactive water park located just west of the Charley Taylor Recreation Center. Since 1959, the recreation center has been a gathering point for many residents to participate in a variety of leisure activities. This year, the center offered the first-ever Itty-Bitty Triathlon designed especially for 3- to 5-year-olds. The “triathletes” who participated definitely made a splash in an event where the splash pad played a huge role in creating grand memories! The triathlon included a swim (actually more of a dash) through the splash pad, a bike ride, and a run. The most unique aspect of the triathlon was the splash pad. For a group that knows how to experience splash pads by running around and through them, the kids were able to really show their “abilities” during this first challenge. Studies have shown that splash pads target a child’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development. For this particular event, parents did not have to worry about the hazards of their Itty-Bitties in the swimming pool because parents and guardians knew their kids love splash pads! The Charley Taylor Splash Pad features age-specific play areas, including a water wall, ground sprays, play structures, a magic-touch water gun, spray cannons, and power geysers. There are six touch buttons that allow children to interact with various features.

GRANDFUNGP.COM

On Your Mark

The goal of the Itty-Bitty Triathlon was to introduce children to a fitness program that would engage them in various challenges in combating childhood obesity. According to the latest census statistics, 8.5 percent of the city’s residents are under the age of five. And since Tiny Tot Programming is in high demand and the most popular class offering at the recreation center, it seemed a logical step to expand programming for this age group. The fee to participate in the triathlon was $10, which included a T-shirt, medal, and snacks. Participants were required to bring their own bicycles and helmets. No additional costs were associated, as staff used existing center resources. There were additional costs in getting the splash pad operational for the season. In the week leading up to the event, some kids chose to visit the race location to practice. On the day of the event, participants arrived with their biggest fans—parents, siblings, grandparents, and other relatives and fans to cheer them on as they took the course. The city’s television station and a reporter were on-site to tell the story of the pint-sized athletes.

Let’s Hear It For Teamwork

In Grand Prairie the winters are semi-short, so staff members quickly learned that March may have not been the best time of the year to host the event. It was a great idea to kick off spring programming; however, the last freeze of the year had not occurred! Between September and April, the splash pad is winterized, which includes draining all the water from the system. For this event, though, the aquatic staff was able to accommodate the recreation programming staff’s request to turn on some splash features. However, staff members cannot simply turn on only half the system, so they had to perform operations as if prepping to open for the entire season. This included closing about 20 valves and filling up the pit, which is where all the water drains and fills to prompt a pump to run. Once that work was completed, a pressure test was conducted to determine how long it took for the splash pad to “turn on,” as well as to make sure nothing was broken or squirting through a pump. After the pressure check, the pad had to be backwashed and cleaned, which took a day or two. Due to the great teamwork of the aquatic staff and the recreation programming staff, the system was operational with only a few minor issues.

Once water was in the system and with no anticipation of another freeze, staff members left the splash pad operational. Beginning a month before the event, aquatic staff flushed the water once or twice a week through the system to avoid its getting stagnant. One week before the event a final pressure test was conducted. Both staffs had to learn how to turn the splash pad features on and off. On the day of the event, aquatic staff members were on hand to operate the system and make sure the pH levels were correct. Other than changing the month in which to host the event, the other popular request was to let the youth begin the race in age groups instead of all together. The 3-year-olds would begin before the 4-year-olds, and then the 5-year-olds would follow. What will definitely be repeated is the “opening ceremony,” where all athletes will stretch together and warm up to some of the their favorite songs. While the children loved their medals, they were also asking for trophies! PRB
