POTE’S NOTES Here it is July and Hot as... well, you all know how hot it is! Your Divan just returned from Daytona Beach, FL, after the Imperial Shrine Convention. Myself, I was very impressed this year as there were 50 items on the call to be voted on, which is more than I have ever seen. Our Imperial officers did a great job of expediting the legislation and getting most of it done on the first day of session. Most of the legislation was Temples moving or changing Shrine associations. However, we did pass some legislation to eliminate the whole of Shriners international from having to approve such actions. So that will now be approved by committee. One item that did pass was when we vote on a candidate to become a Shriner it will now require a written ballot and a 51% majority to elect them for membership. We did find some time to enjoy some of the sights of Daytona and eat some really fresh seafood. And maybe even a cocktail or two. Thank you for allowing us to represent you. It was my honor and privilege to nominate Illustrious Sir Brad Koehn from Arab Shriners in Topeka KS, for the office of Imperial Treasurer. Despite my nervousness, he was unopposed and is now your Imperial Treasurer. Congratulations Imperial Sir Brad. Membership, Membership, Membership……. We can’t stress the importance of this enough, especially now. Moila needs new members, and Moila Country Club needs new Members. We need to all pull together and work to get some new members, or bring back some old ones, to help support our facility. If our downward trend continues some very serious decisions will have to be made, some of which will not be well received by all of our members. If you have any ideas or want to help out with membership please let us know. I am happy to say Fez Foods has some really good things going and some evenings with music and fun planned for the rest of the summer. Please come out and support your food service and have a good time. Don’t Forget Friday nights as Fez Foods will donate 5% of your purchases after 5 o’clock to our Transportation Fund. What a great way to support our cause. Hats off to Fez Foods for coming up with such a generous idea! CSSA is just around the corner, and this year it’s really close. Overland Park Kansas is this year’s location. Please get registered and come down and join the fun. Don’t forget to join us at the Ice Cream Social, Car Show, and Bellyflop Contest this year on July 29th. There are some really neat things planned and there will be some “old standards” back for this year. Come out and enjoy! Thanks for your continued support in 2017, and hope to see you soon. H2

HOT SAND BUGS Well, it is starting to become a busy summer for the Bugs and Ladybugs. Parades, CSSA practices, Golf tournaments and maybe even a time for a cocktail or two? Please join us at the parades this summer as we usually have room for a rider or two. CSSA drill practice is going well as we are preparing to defend our title as CSSA Motor Corps champions in our division of competition. We had our first rainy parade in seven years on the 4th of July this year. We got a little soggy but made it to the Prop Inn at Big Lake to wait out the rain and continued on to Troy that afternoon. We attribute the rain to our newest member Charles Baskins, and will continue to give him grief until he proves the rain was not his fault! Congrats Charles, it’s great to have you. September 8th will be the Third Annual “Ill. Don Schuler Trust Me Open” golf tournament, with a fund-raiser shrimp boil after on the patio. Please come out and join us in the fun. See you at the Parades! HSB Reporter , H2

LEGION OF HONOR The Moila Legion of Honor expresses the deepest gratitude to all the hole sponsors and all the golfers who participated in our golf tournament on July 7. Pictures will be forthcoming in later editions of the various players in the tournament. The golf tournament was a complete success and we raised enough funds through the kind donations to continue sponsoring events such as the upcoming LOH night at the Royals Baseball Game. The next issue will have some pictures, of the Baseball game attendees. The next meeting of the LOH will be in August on the 24th at 1900 hrs. We will plan to meet for dinner prior to the meeting. If you plan to join us for dinner, details will be announced later, but make sure you let Adjutant Jerry Euler know you coming so we can make the proper reservations for seating. Don’t forget the upcoming Ice Cream Social at the Shrine Center and plan to attend. The LOH will be serving the popcorn again this year. Come and support Moila. August2015 2017 February

MISFITS Hello from the Misfits! It is now the heat of summer and mid-July as we write this. We enjoyed a welcome at the Gower parade on June 24th on a sunny day. We then had a great turnout of Moila Shriners and Misfits at the July 4th celebration in Mound City. Unfortunately, what started as a sunny day quickly turned cloudy and then heavy rains set in. None the less many of us stayed for the wonderful chicken dinner prepared by the Mound City Lions Club and sponsored by the Mound City Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to all at Mound City! Your Divan members just returned from Daytona Beach and many meetings daily at the 143rd Imperial Session. Imperial Sir Chris Smith turned over the gavel of authority to our new Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske and we wish him all the best of success on behalf of Moila. We were introduced to our two new patient ambassadors, Emily and Isabella or Bella. This is the first time there have been two female ambassadors and we welcome them wholeheartedly. You can see their video on YouTube under the heading “Free to be

me”. The young ladies and their parents are quite inspirational. Our annual Bass fishing tournament has just wrapped up and was a success. Thanks to Illustrious Dave Brown for supplying the grill and for cooking at the tournament. Thanks to all who volunteered, but especially Dave Shaw, his friends and family for putting on such a great event. Good job Dave! Our next scheduled parade is August 12th in Fairfax, MO and we encourage all to attend as the Fairfax community always puts on a great hospitality lunch. July 29th will be a big day at Moila as there will be a car show, ice cream social and the belly flop contest at the pool. Come to Moila that day to see your Divan “flop”. The Misfits welcome all who would like to ride with us and accept other vehicles besides our minibikes. If you have a 4-wheeler and would like to join us in supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children we would love to have you join us. Contact me, our President Mike Vestal or any Misfits member. See you on the patio. Respectfully, Kim A. Evans, Recorder

Love Grows Miracles Supporting research to develop innovative in utero procedures and treatments that will one day eliminate specific complex medical conditions, increase the number of healthy births, and give new hope to parents and families. Anne Bergenske, First Lady of Shriners International, hopes that one day more children will be born healthy, and that the availability of improved treatments and procedures that can be performed before birth, will make this possible. She has announced her fundraising program, Love Grows Miracles, which will provide funding through scholarships to support research being done by physicians and scientists at Shriners Hospitals for Children® to ensure healthy births and pave the way for the development of innovative treatments that may one day eliminate some birth disorders. “Every parent hopes their child will come into this world healthy, and without difficulties. The researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children are working hard to gain understanding that will help develop and refine in utero procedures, ultimately allowing more parents to experience the incomparable joy and wonder of a healthy newborn,” said Anne Bergenske, First Lady of Shriners International. Whether the problem is spina bifida, cleft lip and palate, cerebral palsy, limb abnormalities, or any other of countless complex medical conditions, there will be solutions in the future. Science and research have the potential to provide answers that may one day eliminate the occurrence or development of these conditions. “Let’s do more than imagine a world without birth disorders; let’s help make it a reality,” said First Lady Anne.

Research that Provides Answers Shriners Hospitals for Children has a long history of conducting research that leads to new, innovative treatments that change lives. Since the first Shriners Hospital opened in 1922, our health care system has been responding to unmet medical needs of children, and providing answers and hope where there were none. That tradition continues as we seek to gain the knowledge and understanding necessary to ensure more babies are born healthy, without difficulties. Support Our Fundraising Efforts First Lady Anne invites you to join her in supporting the innovative research underway at Shriners Hospitals for Children that will one day lead to new and improved in-utero treatments and change the lives of countless children and families. Donations can be made during the First Lady’s visits or online at http://support.shrinershospitals.org/ FirstLadyAnne. Custom Necktie $35 Ltd. Imperial 2017 Nobles and Ladies, Your Divan has just returned from the 143rd annual session of Shriner’s international and what an experience it was! First off I want to call attention to our departed Brother Jack Jones. Jack has made an indelible impression on our fraternity and his leadership throughout Freemasonry is well known. He will truly be missed and we know he remains with us in spirit. The session began with 45 pieces of proposed amendments and resolutions. I am please to say that all of these were worked through and there will be a summary of these presented at a future stated meeting. There were two new Shrine centers chartered during this imperial session.

Bolivia Shriners located in Santa Cruz, Bolivia was granted dispensation. They are excited to get started and have a large group of Master Masons who are ready to become Shriners. Amal Shriners located in Sao Paulo, S.P. Brazil was granted dispensation. They are located in a densely populated area of Brazil where Freemasonry has seen a dramatic increase in the last decade. They are going to put together a ceremonial with over one hundred new candidates this fall. Membership overseas is increasing rapidly. As an example, Mabuhay Shriners from the Philippines is expanding across the Pacific Rim and this has brought about the creation of numerous clubs, each of which is growing. Membership in the U.S. is unfortunately on a different trajectory.

Calendar Events

Overall membership has declined to 244,000 at current count. We have got to turn this around! We have got to make the Shrine centers a significant social center once again and transform our curriculum to appeal to the masses and their families. We have got to get out message out to the public and let them know what a great organization this is. The Divan had an opportunity to see Shriners from all over the world during this session. Each of them is committed to the cause and working hard to make a difference for the kids. They are also having a lot of fun doing it. I wish that each of you reading this could see what I saw at Imperial session! A massive group of Shriners traveled from all over the world and spent time together in one place. It was the epitome of what Freemasonry is all about. We all met on the level and had fun together. The only barriers were language barriers. Our Fraternity is a great opportunity to meet outstanding people from every part of the world. Let’s keep Shriners strong in the U.S. and make sure that we have a solid fraternity to pass on to future generations so that they can have the experiences we have had, and so that the Shriners Hospitals for Children continue to fulfill their blessed mission!! Together we can make a big difference if we can just pull together. Respectfully submitted, Bill Pease, Asst. Rabban, Moila Shriners

Introducing the Imperial Potentate’s Program At the 2016 Imperial Session, Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske introduced legislation, known as the six-pack, which was intended to strengthen the financial position of Shriners International. The bill, which passed, included permission for the Imperial Potentate to have a fundraising program. The concept is similar to the familiar First Lady’s program, with the beneficiary being the fraternity, rather than the philanthropy.

Imperial Sir Gary J. Bergenske is the first Imperial Potentate to implement the new program. His fundraising effort will include the sale of three individual items – a beautiful Masonic Shrine apron, a carrying case for it, and a Shriners Jewel. These items can be purchased individually, in combination or as a complete set. Discounts are available for bundled purchases. Combining Traditions Aprons are an important and treasured symbol of Masonry. The 2017-2018 Imperial Potentate’s Program brings together the traditions of Masonry and Shriners with a new custom-designed apron depicting the familiar Scimitar and Crescent, which has been a symbol of the Shriners fraternity since its inception. The apron is white lambskin leather with

hand embroidery and other embellishments, and sells for $359.99. The apron should be stored in a special case, available for $100. The Shrine Jewel is a replica of a design from over 100 years ago, described as a gold colored metal Shrine emblem on a white ribbon with a goldcolored bar. It is truly a must-have item, and available for $49.99. Each apron is handmade and can be individually customized. For instance, you can have your name embroidered under the flap; have a Past Master’s emblem placed on it, etc. Imperial Sir Gary chose these items because they represent the rich history of Shriners, and they are of a quality nobles and others will admire and appreciate. “They are items that will be noticed, and will serve as perfect openings to discussions of what the Shriners fraternity is, and how to become part of it,” said Bergenske. “When people see the aprons, they will want to know more. They make a great one-of-a-kind gift as well.” Supporting Your Philanthropy The unique, quality apron and the accompanying items will be available to Shriners during the 2017 Imperial Session, and for purchase throughout this Imperial Year. Orders can be placed at masonicsupplyshop.com/ shrine-apron/, where additional information is also available.

By purchasing these items, you will be supporting your fraternity, and helping to ensure its ability to promote the Masonic ideals of brotherhood, relief and truth, as well as work to improve the lives of children and make the world a better place, far into the future. Thank you for being part of this important effort.
