WHERE WILL WE PUT 3.5 MILLION GALLONS OF HOG MANURE? NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF CAFOS CAFOs produce millions of gallons of raw waste that are spread on nearby farmland. This waste contains pathogens and nutrients that threaten water quality. (2) Studies link proximity to CAFOs with antibiotic-resistant infections (3) and respiratory inflammation, asthma, allergies, headaches, eye irritation, and nausea. (4) Property values have been shown to decrease by up to 88% for properties adjacent to CAFOs, and can even be impacted for 7 miles surrounding the operation. (5)

MORE CAFOS PLANNED In addition to Z-8 Sow Farm, the 7000head, Trenton Farms hog facility has been approved just north of the county line, and even more have been proposed for Daviess County. The Livingston Health Ordinance has maintained reasonable setbacks and nutrient management requirements for CAFOs over the past 23 years. If that ordinance is weakened, as it is currently being re-written by livestock industry representatives, we will see more applications for massive confinements and their millions of gallons of manure in our community.

TELL OUR COMMISSIONERS THE Z-8 SOW CAFO IS WRONG FOR LIVINGSTON COUNTY. WHAT IS A CAFO? A CAFO is a concentrated animal feeding operation, which houses over 1000 "animal units" for 45 days or more without vegetation. (1) CAFOs represent corporate control of our food system from the farm to your table. In just one generation, 90% (over 20,000) of Missouri's hog producers are out of business and two foreign corporations now control half of the entire U.S. hog industry. These companies are Smithfield Foods, which is a Chinese conglomerate, and JBS, a Brazilian company. This corporate controlled system is driving people away from rural Missouri and is putting farmers out of business and off the land. In addition to the hog farmer, all family farmers are in danger from corporate takeover. We can’t afford any more of their corporate model and vision for the future of farming in Missouri. Monopolies will mean higher prices for consumers. WHAT IS Z-8 SOW FARM? United Hog Systems out of Marshall, Missouri, has planned a 5740head hog operation for Northeast Jackson Township in the Thompson River Watershed. This facility, with three massive barns and a composting shed for dead pigs, classifies as a Class 1C Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). It has been approved for a permit by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, though MDNR can only review potential impacts to water quality. A local organization, called Poosey Neighbors United, has appealed this permit, arguing it does not meet state standards and will not protect water quality. FARMERS AND RESIDENTS ARE CONCERNED The CAFO will be built in an area full of sinkholes, freshwater ponds, intermittent streams, and a high groundwater table near the Thompson River Floodplain. The Natural Resources Conservation Service deems soils at this location “very limited” for shallow excavations such as underground manure pits with “poor performance and high maintenance expected." The proposed pits will hold up to 3.5 million gallons per year causing a direct threat to our groundwater. Harmful air emissions of ammonia, methane, and hydrogen sulfide plus water contamination threaten our area and the future of nearby established organic farms, as well as Poosey Conservation Area, just over 1 mile to the west. Poosey Conservation Area attracts thousands of visitors for fishing, hiking, biking, camping, recreation, and tours. CAFOs in this proximity threaten the biological diversity of our treasured wildlife, environment, and landscape.
