ention contra dancing to someone from around here, and chances are they’ll know what you’re talking about. If they aren’t a dancer or musician, they are probably no more than two degrees separated from one. And if you happen to mention to contra dancers anywhere else in the country that you’re from the Monadnock Region, they’ll look at you with an appreciative glow — “Aren’t you lucky?!” The small town of Nelson, New Hampshire, is generally considered to be the contra dance capital of the world, but all of the towns in the region have had contra dancing figure into their history as a vibrant part of their social and cultural life. And while in colonial times contra dancing was popular throughout New England — and remains so today in certain pockets— the Monadnock Region has a special claim on

4

having maintained the tradition. ■ A brief history: In 1651, John Playford, a London bookseller, published the english dancing Master, a collection of English country dances and tunes. It was extremely popular and quickly spread to France, where the dance form, done in lines of couples facing opposite each other, came to be known as “contredanse.” The tunes came here with the fiddles that had traveled with their owners to this new land. Like the people who sought new life, adventure, and freedom, the tunes were ready to lend their folk roots to be the foundation of something new. New communities, eager for diversion and cohesion, found both with the music and dance. French dancing masters roamed the colonial countryside, teaching the contredanse, which became contra dance. These dances were appealing to the nascent democracy: The dancers were equal, with everyone in the set engaging

with everyone else: the farmer, the banker, the blacksmith, the teacher. The dance served the additional function of teaching social graces and nurturing community. And, of course, there was the potential for flirtation and courtship — thus ensuring the continuity of the community. In a typical contra dance, there are alternating active and inactive couples (the actives having a few more moves to go through, depending on the dance). The active couples work their way down the line, and inactives work their way up, each time through — dancing with a different couple. Swing your partner, do-si-do, allemande, circle up four — dozens of figures are put together in various configurations to make each dance unique. The disruption of the Civil War and the introduction of new kinds of music and dance and other social diversions brought a decline in contra dancing, but it remained a part of cultural life, particularly in the small rural towns of New England.

People danced wherever they could, but our town halls were often the venue of choice. These halls are simple buildings, but they were designed with a sense of form and balance — like the music and dance that filled them. The New England town hall is the home to democracy at the most basic level — think of town meetings, public hearings, events where people gather to discuss, to debate, arguing sometimes to the point of physical confrontation, all to build and sustain their community. This is how the dance works: You engage with others, sometimes coming together, sometimes moving apart, but always building the rich history of the contra dance. One of the most satisfying moves in contra dancing is the balance, where you grab the hand of someone and pull back — holding your own against the pull of your partner. And, as in democracy, if you don’t stand firmly by your conviction, the dance doesn’t work as well. Our town halls have absorbed decades of the dance,

7

Valerie Van Meier

the music, and the civic engagement, and you can feel it in the walls. One of the reasons that contra dancing remains such a vibrant part of our local culture is that the tradition has been allowed to evolve. In the 1970s, the hippie movement infiltrated the scene, and with it came a freer and more flamboyant style of dancing. The music has also evolved. It can be as simple as a single fiddle accompanied by guitar or piano, or larger ensembles that include flutes, whistles, mandolins, and accordions. Today’s musicians are more apt to be influenced by many other musical forms; it’s not uncommon to hear rock-and-roll, jazz, or world-music flavors, although there is usually a very solid foundation that provides that unmistakable

8

New England contra dance spirit. While elsewhere in New England contra dancers are a graying crowd, a typical dance in Peterborough or Nelson is well populated with high school and college kids. Folks of all ages, and from all walks of life, enjoy dancing together. While contra dancing can at first seem intimidating to newcomers, you’ll find that if you just jump right in, you’ll be surrounded by friendly encouragement. Before you know it, you’re part of one of New England’s oldest traditions! Gordon Peery is a musician, writer, and Web designer. He has been playing piano for contra dances for over 35 years. His most recent recording with the band "trip to nelson" is The Winding Road.

Guide TORESOURCES

The following sections will steer you to sources of information about services and organizations in the Monadnock Region. Look here for social services, transportation, and a host of other topics.

PETERBOROUGH TOWN OFFICES AND SERVICES Fire Department (business line) 924-8090 Human Services 924-8000, ext. 101 Library 924-8040 Monadnock Community Hospital 924-7191 N.H. Office of Energy and Planning 271-2155 Office of Community Development 924-8000, ext. 104 Police 911 or 924-8050 Post Office 924-3251 Public Works 924-8000, ext. 100 Recreation Department 924-8080 Recycling Center 924-8095 Selectmen/Town Administration 924-8000, ext. 103 Tax Collector 924-8000, ext. 113 Town Clerk 924-8000, ext. 105 Food Pantry 924-3008

YOUR TOWN OFFICES Your town office is a treasure trove of information and a resource for virtually all of your municipal affairs. The Town Clerk’s office is where you register your motor vehicles, obtain a marriage license and dog license, register to vote, and more. It may be helpful to call your town office to be sure of your clerk’s hours. Your birth, death, and marriage are registered at the town office. Note, however, that these events are recorded in the town where they occur, which is not necessarily the town where you reside. If you wish to get a copy of such a record, you must apply to the town where the original is filed, or to the NH Bureau of Vital Records, 800-852-3345. The Tax Collector’s office is the place to pay your property taxes as well as your water and sewer bills, and to renew your boat registration. Some tax collectors serve as municipal agents for the state and can issue vehicle renewal decals. Other municipal departments that may be located in your town offices are the Board of Selectmen, Public Works, Code Officer, Human Services, and the Police, Fire, and Recreation Departments (see Individual Town Statistics on page 29).

HOW TO REGISTER YOUR VEHICLE 1. At your Town Clerk’s office, present your vehicle’s title with proof of residency and previous year’s registration. 2. Your registration certificate is prepared by your Town Clerk upon payment of the auto tax based on your vehicle’s valuation and model year. 3. Some Tax Collectors and Town Clerks serve as municipal agents for the state and can issue vehicle renewal decals or license plates. If your town is not one of these, you will then send the

21

registration certificate to the NH Division of Motor Vehicles in Concord, or take it to one of the local NH DMV offices, with payment to the state of the auto tax based on the weight of the vehicle. Registration is valid for 1 year and expires on the last day of the month of owner’s birthday. MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION: Each vehicle must be inspected yearly at an authorized inspection station (an auto dealer or service station) within 10 days after registration or renewal of registration. MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE: Not mandatory in NH. DRIVER’S LICENSE: $50 for a five-year license. New drivers or residents may report to local motor vehicle offices in either Keene (Mon. thru Wed.) or Milford (Thurs. or Fri.) for payment, testing, and photographing.

HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE To register to vote in New Hampshire, you must present proof of citizenship to the Town Clerk or Supervisors of the Checklist in the town in which you reside. Proof of citizenship includes birth certificate, passport, service discharge papers, naturalization papers, or your voter registration card from the town or city in which you previously resided. The Supervisors of the Checklist hold sessions for registering to vote several times before an election. These times and hours will be advertised in the local newspapers. Upon presenting your supporting document, you will be asked to fill out a voter registration card. Once it is completed, you will be a legally registered voter. New Hampshire has same-day registration for federal and state voting.

DOG LICENSE RENEWALS

Tom LaBash

Renewals are due by April 30. Visit the Town Clerk’s Office on or before April 30. Hours of operation vary from town to town (see Town Statistics, pg. 29, for contact information). Dogs’ rabies shots must be current.

Each district and each SAU has a school board. Throughout the Monadnock Region, all school districts provide special education services for educationally handicapped children, in accordance with state and federal law. Transportation is available to

appropriate programs within the region. Further information is available through the Director of Special Education in each school district. K = Kindergarten. New Hampshire public schools are required to have kindergartens. A child must be five by a certain date (frequently Sept. 30, although this varies by district) to enter kindergarten.
