NJ SPORTS FITNESS & WELLNESS ATHLETES OF THE MONTH – DECEMBER 2012
Sahara Gipson Ramapo High School Junior Gymnastics
St. Joseph Regional Football Team St. Joseph’s Regional football team is one of the most well-known in New Jersey, up there with rivalry Don Bosco Prep. This Thanksgiving proved differently for St. Joe’s who hadn’t beaten their rival in the Holiday game since 2004. With a score of 20-10, the Green Knights defeated Don Bosco’s No. 1 ranked Ironmen and broke the team’s NJ 61-game winning streak. To add to their accomplishments, St. Joe’s also recorded key wins versus top-ranked teams, St. Peter’s Prep and Bergen Catholic. Currently ranked No. 2 in NJ and No. 45 nationally, St. Joe’s football, under head coach Tony Karcich is certainly giving other top rated NJ teams a run for their money this 2012-2013 season.
Sahara Gipson has more to be proud of than her Record Gymnast of the Year title. 2012 marks the Ramapo Gymnastic Team’s first state championship in school history. The team had an undefeated season, becoming Bergen County Champions, North Jersey League A Champions and New Jersey North 1 Sectional Champions, large part due to junior, Sahara Gipson. Gipson earned eight first-place finishes out of a possible 12 in her top meets and finished the year with a season-high all-around score of 37.875 to grab the State Championship title over Montgomery. Humble, yet accomplished, Gipson and the rest of the Green Raiders look forward to exceeding high expectations and earning another state title next year.

Glen Rock girls soccer head coach Tracy Trobiano led her team to a dominating performance this year culminating with a Group 2 state title.
Trobiano Guides Glen Rock Soccer
TO THEIR BIGGEST YEAR By Edward Kensik GLEN ROCK — It was one of the best teams that coach Tracy Trobiano has ever had and it came in her 18th season guiding Glen Rock girls soccer. The Lady Panthers finished a dominating year with a dominating performance, 4-0, over Bordentown at The College of New Jersey to collect the Group 2 state title, the first state championship in girls soccer for the school since 2003 and the first outright since 1999. It was Glen Rock girls soccer’s 11th overall state title, only behind Morris Catholic (13) and Ramapo (12) for the most in the sport in New Jersey. In the victory over Bordentown, it was a pair of goals from Grace Taylor along with a goal from Sophie Lederer and Sarah Fiorino, all seniors, the heart and soul of the 2012 season. The Panthers were so dominant that the ball was kept in the Bordentown side of the field for most of the game as Glen Rock outshot their opponents, 21-4. The Lady Panthers finished with a 23-1 record with the lone NJ Sports Fitness & Wellness Telephone: (973) 605-1213 Fax: (973) 605-1883 editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com 173 Morris Street, 2nd Floor Morristown, NJ 07960 page 4
loss coming at the hands of Northern Highlands, the team that won the Bergen County title, in the county tournament. And the Lady Panthers worked to perfection Trobiano’s philosophy. “My personal philosophy is that we outwork the other team,” said Trobiano. Not only did Glen Rock dominate Bordentown, but they dominated the rest of the Group 2 schools and outscored their opponents, 15-1, in the five games to the Group 2 title. “We had been doing so well and the teams were not able to keep with us,” said Trobiano. The Group 2 state title in 2012 was a win for the teams in the last few years. With the district putting in new turf fields and stadiums, the Lady Panthers have truly been Road Warriors where most of the last two seasons have had them on road as visitors. And finally Glen Rock played a home game and it came on Senior Night against Rutherford on Oct. 27 at the football field. Next year the Lady Panthers will be playing on a soccer-only field.
“It had become a challenge,” said Trobiano about playing on the road all the time. “I felt that game was a celebration for the seniors and camaraderie and fellowship. I think we really appreciated playing at home and I think they felt that nothing would stop them. We really came to play in the state tournament.” And for Trobiano she believes that home game against Ruth-

erford on Senior Night was one of the turning points for the season that spurred them on to the Group 2 title. “I think it really contributed to our success and gave us confidence and poise,” said Trobiano about playing on Glen Rock soil. It was truly a culmination of a group of girls that had been together for several years in seniors that included Em-

ily Rogan, Taylor, Hannah Petrone, Jennifer Godfrey, Kendall Daly, Lauren Besser, Lynn Giannantonio, Madison Rosen, Maggie Egan, Steph Meier, Fiorino and Lederer. Now playing on their home field in Glen Rock, the Lady Panthers would go on and play four games and four wins including defeating Ramsey, 1-0, on the home turf that avenged a 3-2 loss to the Rams in the 2011 Group 2 North 1 state sectional title. Sophie Lederer fed Hannah Petrone who slipped in a shot in the second half to defeat Ramsey. After the first home game against Rutherford, Glen Rock did not play for more than a week-and-half because of Hurricane Sandy and seemed to be extra motivated to collect some state titles. “The girls went 12 days without practice and came back after Sandy and were so excited to play,” said Trobiano.
It was 23 years ago that Trobiano took over the Glen Rock girls soccer program and she admitted she was nervous. Her only coaching job before coming to Glen Rock was as the junior varsity coach at IHA for two seasons. Not only was she a graduate from nearby rival Midland Park High School, but she took over a program that had a lot of success. She was a three-sport player at Midland Park and a three-sport player at Skidmore College. “I was intimidated by the program with the team’s success, but was helped with a lot of encouragement from the entire school,” said Trobiano who was 23-years-old at the time. Outside of the eight years that she took off of coaching, she has been the Glen Rock coach. One of the differences today compared to when she started was the three-sport player that is not as common as it use to be. “Three-sport players are
a rarity as they are spending more time in the offseason with one sport,” said Trobiano, who as a three-sport player, encourages playing three sports and has a few including one of his top players in Sophie Lederer. Also Maggie Egan will be playing NCAA Division 1 lacrosse in college. She added that the Glen Rock head girls basketball coach David Mosconi was one of the biggest fans of the soccer team especially with the hurricane ending the season later. When the season starts Trobiano has an informal meeting with the parents, but the audience is usually the new parents

of freshman students. One of her biggest rules for communications is if there is a problem with a player that she wants the student athlete to talk to her rather than the parent. “I’m an advocate for the kids speaking up for themselves,” said Trobiano. “I think the kids learn a lot from that and they will need to speak for themselves when they have their first interview at a college.” And now for several seniors on the Glen Rock team they will be able to move on to college and tell their future teachers and teammates about the 2012 season.

Pascack Valley battled to a 35-32 victory over Ramapo under the lights in Hillsdale on October 26 to earn on the playing field the right to be called the No. 1 team in Bergen County. In the battle of unbeatens, Kyle Zenk’s second TD of the game, a seven yard blast over the goal line with three minutes remaining on the game clock rallied the Cowboys to their eighth straight victory. This was a classic confrontation between the two-best
schools with only Bergen County student/athletes on their rosters. Kyle Schneider hooked up with Kevin Illian on TD strikes of two and five yards while Nick Seravilla picked off a Raider aerial in the third quarter and returned the pigskin 44 yards into the end zone. TD reception of 15 yards from Anthony Lovecchio who added a six-pointer on a one-yard blast to glory. David Bonagura split the uprights with a 27 yard field goal. Ramapo held on to oust Lakeland 35-31 from the NJSIAA North jersey, Section 1, Group II semifinals. Lovecchio fired five TD passes including a 68yard TD bomb to Neil O’Connor and strikes of 24 and 12 yards to Pat O’Hagen. In the championship game, David Bonagura kicked the longest field goal of his career, splitting the uprights with a 48yarder as 11 seconds remained on the clock to lift Ramapo to a thrilling 37-34 comeback victory over Sparta in the North 1, Group 3 final Saturday at Kean University in Union. The Raiders victory and Pascack Valley’s 14-6 loss to Roxbury in the North 1, Group IV title game catapulted the Raiders into the No. 1 slot in the Metropolitan New York Football Writers’ Association North Jersey Public page 12
School poll. Roxbury jumped out to a 14-0 lead by the halftime break and the Gaels from Morris County held on to claim the sectional title. Pascack Valley got on the board in the third quarter when Kyle Zenk blasted the final two yards into the end zone but proved to be the final scoring by either team until the final whistle. Pascack Valley’s 2011 victory over Wayne Hills in the sectional semifinals was the finale of Patriot head coach Chris Olsen’s career on the sideline. Pascack Valley increased its lead to 14-3 with 4:07 left in the third quarter when senior tailback Chris Garcia bolted the four yards into the end zone after Zenk, a senior defensive back, set the stage with a 61-yard fumble return. In non-public action, head coach Tony Karcich’s Green Knights halted the 61-game in-state winning streak of Don Bosco Prep, defeating the Ironmen 20-10. Mark Fossati, the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year, tallied 14 points for the
Green Knights by splitting the uprights twice from 26 and 31 yards. He added a pair of extra point placements and bolted nine yards into the end zone in the fourth quarter. Brion Wynn raced 10 yards over the goal line in the first quarter. Trailing 9-0, the Green Knights got on the board in the second quarter as Sherman Alston blasted two yards over the goal and Fossati booted a 38-yard field goal to lift the Green nights into a 10-9 lead before intermission. It was all SJR in the second half as quarterback Spencer Aukamp, who completed 10 of 14 aerial attempts for 217 yards and three touchdowns, connected on an 89 yard TD bomb to Ricky Jeune. St. Joseph Regional/Montvale went onto capture the NJSIAA Non-Public Group III crown with an easy 37-9 victory over Delbarton after trailing 9-0 early in the second quarter. Aukamp connected on 10 of 24 passes for 217 yards and fired three TD passes with Jeune hailing in four for 159 yards and TD tosses of 89 and 21 yards. Au-
kamp was the leading rusher, six times for 70 yards. In the semifinals of the NonPublic Group IV playoffs, Bergen Catholic defeated Don Bosco Prep 28-14 as John Germano, the 2012 New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year, opened the scoring with a four-yard TD pitch to John Feaster and followed with a one yard plunge into the end zone as the Crusaders surged to a 13-0 lead entering the second quarter. Paramus Catholic played a home game on the turf of the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers in Piscataway, going on a 23-6 run in the second half to defeat the Friendship Collegiate Academy from the District of Columbia 37-20. Ryan Monoghan went to air for 142 yards and three touchdowns while Jonathan Diaz toted the pigskin 18 times, rushing for 72 yards and two touchdown while adding a third six-pointer on a TD pass when St. Mary’s/Rutherford defeated St. Anthony (Jersey City) 42-7.

LADY PANTHERS’ ROUT
BORDENTOWN FOR STATE CROWN By Jessica Quas Senior Grace Taylor scored two goals to boost Glen Rock to a 4-0 triumph over Bordentown to capture the NJSIAA Group II girls’ soccer Championship on the campus of The College of New Jersey in Ewing. It is the Lady Panthers’ 11th state crown, the third most in state history behind Morris Catholic (13) and Ramapo (12) and first since Glen Rock tied for the Group I title with New Providence in 2003. Taylor finished the season with 19 goals while Glen Rock’s final record was 23-1. The Lady Panthers dominated, building up a 21-4 advantage in shots on goal as defenders Maggie Egan, a senior, and Caitlin Callahan, a sophomore, marked Bordentown’s outstanding senior Alexis McTamney, holding page 16
her scoreless. Taylor put Glen Rock on the board in the 35th minute and 11 minutes later Sophie Lederer made it 2-0. In the 52nd minute, Taylor netted her second tally following a Hannah Petrone corner kick. A senior, Petrone finished the season with 26 goals and 20 assists. She will travel north to the Granite State and will continue her student/athlete career at Dartmouth College. Sophomore Sarah Fiorino completed the scoring in the 69th minute when she blasted the ball into the goal from 35 yards out. Keeper Sarah Gross stopped five shots on goal as the Lady Panthers captured the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group championship banner with a 1-0 triumph over Ramsey. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Lady Buccaneers Become First Group I School to Win Bergen County Volleyball Title By Cara Sagala Bogota became the first Group I School to win the Bergen County Girls Volleyball Title. Prevailing over Immaculate Heart in three sets Sunday at Old Tappan. It was the third match up of the season between the two squads. All three went three sets, this was the first one to go to the Bucs and it sure is one they will always remember. “We wanted to make history today,” said Bogota senior setter Rebecca Kelemen. “It’s real hard. IHA is a very skilled team, the talent is even on both sides but we were mentally prepared to make history. We came here with a mission and we completed it.” How hard is it for a Group One school, much less a small Group One School such as Bogota, to win a county title? The facts show it is practically impossible for a small public school. In girl’s sports, no Group I team has won a Bergen County championship in basketball. It has never happened in soccer or swimming page 20
either. In tennis, the competition is split between big schools and small schools, and cross-country is divided into four groups. Therefore, big schools and small schools are not allowed to compete against each other. The only girls sport in which it’s even close is softball: Lodi (1987), Cliffside Park (1986), New Milford (1977) and Westwood (1974) are the only small public schools that have come away with the big trophy. Even that is a bit skewed since all those schools had larger enrollments at the time of their wins than they do today. Small schools, such as Bogota with its enrollment of 281, face a tremendous challenge. They do not have the same numbers. They don’t face the same level of competition consistently, and should they survive the crucible of a county tournament facing public schools four times their size, there may be a non-public school just waiting to pounce. Highlighting the pre-quarterfinals action Bogota’s easy 2-0 blanking of previously undefeated Immacu-

How to Get a Workout with Your Dog Your pooch just might be the most loyal and fun exercise buddy you could ask for.
Here’s how to safely workout together. Special to NJ Sports Fitness & Wellness Need a workout buddy and a little extra motivation? Look no further than the end of your dog’s leash. Man’s best friend can be a fabulous fitness partner. After all, you need to exercise and so does your pup. “Just letting a dog out to play in a fenced-in yard isn’t good enough,” says Susan Nelson, clinical associate professor at Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center. “Just like for us, exercise is good for a dog’s cardiovascular system and helps to fight obesity, which leads to other issues such as diabetes, heart disease and joint problems.” It’s also good mental stimulation for your four-legged friend. “Dogs who are cooped up all day tend to become destructive from all that pent up energy,” notes Nelson. “A tired dog is a happy dog.” Here’s how to team up with your pooch and safely break a sweat together. Ease into exercise “Working out with your dog can be a lot of fun and rewarding for both of you,” says Joe Dowdell, founder and CEO of Peak Performance in New York City. But that doesn’t mean you should go full-steam ahead right from the start. Think of this way: You wouldn’t go from being sedentary to running five miles in just a few days or weeks, so neither should your pup. “Make sure your dog is ready to exercise,” says Nelson. “You may have to start slowly and build up the intensity and/or length of time.” Signs that your dog may need a break include lagging behind, heavy panting, staggering, limping or refusing to move. “Do not try to push your dog to do more if you page 24
notice any of these signs,” says Nelson. Also, don’t take him for an intense workout right after eating, which can lead to stomach bloat. And before you break one bead of sweat, get the OK from your dog’s doc. “It is important to have your dog checked by your veterinarian before starting an exercise program to make sure he is healthy and can do the type of exercise you are thinking about,” says Nelson. Make it a real workout — not a stroll “Don’t use having your dog with you as an excuse to stroll — continue to push yourself,” says New York-based David Kirsch, celebrity personal trainer and wellness expert. This means warming up with light exercise, such as a jog or slowpaced walk, and then bumping up the speed and intensity, such as by running or walking briskly. “During the workout, change your pace and direction to keep your heart rate up,” suggests Kirsch. Fun workouts you can do with Fido by your side include walking, which is easier on the joints for older dogs, as well as running, cycling, rollerblading and skateboarding. Head for the hills or the beach Depending on where you live, taking a hike or hitting the beach can be an enjoyable, healthy way to workout with your pooch. During a hike, add some hill climbs, suggests Dowdell. You can also do running sprints on the beach together. “For the sprints, throw a tennis ball down the beach so that your dog will chase after it, and then quickly follow suit,” he suggests. Frisbee and fetch are also good heart-pumping forms of exercise. “They are great ways for a dog to exercise, plus it gives him the added benefit of interacting with
his owner,” says Nelson. Match your workout to your mutt Not all dogs have the same energy level. “You can’t run a basset hound like you would a Great Dane,” explains Nelson. In general, for short-legged and smaller dogs or those with arthritis, low-impact activities such as walking, hiking and fetch are great. For medium and larger sized dogs that are in good shape, try running. And if your dog knows how to swim, a dip in the pool works wonders if your pooch has arthritis or other joint problems. In general, Nelson says small pooches can walk up to a mile or two while large dogs may be able to handle three or more miles of walking or running. “Endurance activities are not very good for flat-nosed dogs,” adds Nelson. Dogs should get exercise at least twice a day, generally around 15 to 20 minutes each session for small dogs and 30 to 40 minutes or more for large dogs, so trying different workouts to find one you both like is key. Load up on H20 Bring along fresh water for you and your pup, and make sure you both stay well-hydrated by sipping some H20 before, during and after your workout session—especially in warm weather to prevent overheating. You can tote a portable bowl or get a dog-sipping top to put on your water bottle. And be aware of signs of overheating, which include panting heavily, thick and ropey saliva and a dark, red tongue. Adjust your workout to the weather In warm weather months, switch your doggie workout sessions to early morning and evening when temperatures
are cooler. “For any dogs, but especially pugs, bulldogs and Boston terriers, even temperatures in the 70s can be hazardous to their health,” explains Nelson. Humidity can also be an issue. “High humidity can make it tough for dogs to breathe and they can’t get proper cooling through panting,” she adds. “This is especially true for dogs with short, stubby noses like boxers and bulldogs.” Turn the same-old walk into a workout “Usually on our late night walk, my dog and I play the leash tug game,” says Dowdell. While walking, see if your dog will hold her own leash in her mouth. Then as you walk, each pull in opposite directions. “My dog’s very powerful, so it can be a tremendous upper body and core workout,” adds Dowdell. And it’s a great way for your pup to burn off some energy before bed. Don’t overdo it Even pets can get too much exercise. “Some signs to look for include an obvious limp, if they are tugging on their leash and don’t want to go forward, or if they start to lag behind,” says Nelson. Also, be careful where you take your mutt to move. “As the weather gets warmer, pavement and asphalt can get hot and burn the pads on their feet,” explains Nelson. “Gravel can be a painful surface, too, and tear up tender pads, especially if they aren’t used to running on it. Many dogs will develop severe injuries to their pads if they aren’t conditioned to run on rough surfaces.” It’s the equivalent of us going barefoot in the summer after wearing shoes all winter, so you may need to work up slowly to toughen up your best friend’s feet. editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com

SPORTSMANSHIP: Is that 138 Points in a College Hoops Game a Legit Record? “The Sports Edge” with Rick Wolff can be listened to every Sunday morning from 8am to 9am on Sportsradio 66 WFAN.
Grinnell College’s Jack Taylor scored 138 points in one game.
By Rick Wolff Like everyone else who follows sports, when I read the headlines about this sophomore guard from Div-III Grinnell College in Iowa scoring 138 points in a single game, it just didn’t seem possible. But as the facts begin to be played out, more and more pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. Yes, the guard — Jack Taylor — did, in fact, score 138 points against a tiny school called Faith Baptist College. And yes, for more than 25 years, Grinnell has featured a unique run-and-gun offense in which the team routinely leads the nation in scoring because their long-time coach, David Arsenault, has built his entire program around having a full-court press, having new kids come in off the bench every 90 seconds, page 30
and making sure his kids take plenty of 3 point shots. Arsenault calls it “The System” and has written books and produced videos about it. And Grinnell has run several league championships over the years, and made it to the NCAA playoffs, although I don’t think they have ever won a national championship. In any event, Taylor ended up taking up 108 (!) shots in the game against Faith Baptist, and played 36 minutes of the 40 minute game. As my guest Steve Kallas pointed out on my show this morning, there were all sorts of questions that this performance raised. For starters, according to the Grinnell announcers on the game’s telecast, the Grinnell coaching staff had already contacted the NCAA before the game to make sure that any
potential records that might be set in the game would indeed count. They probably did this because Faith Baptist had told Grinnell that they considered this game to be merely an exhibition game, not a real game. Besides, Faith Baptist is not even a member of the NCAA or the NAIA. With that backdrop, the contest began and clearly Grinnell was trouncing Faith Baptist. They were up by 50 at halftime. But that didn’t stop the onslaught. By the end of the affair, Grinnell had used 20 players — which is admirable — but they had built their entire offense to keep feeding Taylor so he could shoot, and shoot, and shoot. As several callers mentioned this AM, it does seem as though the Faith Baptist team was somehow complicit in this record. After all, if you were the coach of that team, wouldn’t you have asked Grinnell’s Arsenault at half-time to call off the dogs? Or perhaps ask that the clock keep running in
the second half? Or since it was an exhibition, simply tell Grinnell at half-time ”Thanks for the scrimmage…we’re going home now.” But by not doing anything to stop this lopsided affair, I hold the Faith Baptist coach just as accountable as the Grinnell coach. Look, we all keep track of records because we always assume that they are meaningful and represent something of singular achievement in an athletic event. I’m not sure, under that criteria, scoring 138 points in this kind of basketball work-out, would qualify. Will Taylor’s record appear in the NCAA record books? Yes, it will. But this is one time where a little sportsmanship would have gone a long, long way.
