The OWC system, which is based on a European style of wrestling, has proven incredibly successful over the past 7 years as we’ve produced 13 State Champions and a total of 71 State Medalists since 2004.
Wrestlers from the Olympic Wrestling Club performed very well in the New Jersey and New York State wrestling tournaments. Olympic had 57 wrestlers qualify for the tournaments (the highest number of State qualifiers the Club has ever had) and 15 of them medaled!
We couldn’t be prouder of our guys!
No other Club in North/Central Jersey can match this record!

NJ SPORTS FITNESS & WELLNESS ATHLETES OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2011 Andre Frasier
Stephanie Urresty

Wayne Hills High School
Basketball
Swimming
By Heather Shauger Andre Frasier is the second leading scorer for his team at Elmwood Park Memorial High School. Even though he is only a sophomore, he is an integral park of Elmwood Park’s High School basketball team. His outgoing demeanor and playing ability already have many of his teammates looking at him as a role model on the team. At Elmwood Park, his teammates have given him the nickname of “Moose,” because of his aggressive playing ability. Andre originally is from the Bronx in New York. He came from a neighborhood that had frequent shootings, as well as robberies. Coming to the suburbs of Elmwood Park was an adjustment for him. Things did not seem as hectic to him as they did in the Bronx, and he had the ability to really focus his energy on more important aspects in his life. While basketball was a very big part the culture in the Bronx, he found that he was able to develop himself and challenge himself in different ways through Elmwood Park’s team. “Basketball here is more interactive, you play more as a team,” he said. While in New York he played more freely, he has been challenged to interact more with his team and think about the plays in which he sets up. In the future, Andre hopes to play for a division-one basketball team. However, in the more near future, we can expect to see this athlete as one of the leading scorers and key figures on his basketball team.
By Heather Shauger With an easygoing laid-back personality, one would not pick up on the competitive drive that Stephanie Urresty from Wayne Hills High School has. She is a key figure on her swim team at Wayne Hills High School. Her participation and swimming ability made it possible for the Patriots to win the 2011 Passaic County Swim Competition. She has been swimming since the age of eight. When she is not swimming for her high school, is involved in club teams. “I like that swimming is a different kind of sport. It challenges you more as an individual,” she said. While she is dedicated towards improving her swimming abilities everyday, she is not arrogant about the abilities she already has. Having been new to Wayne Hills when she was a freshman, her teammates were unaware of just how well she was able to swim. She surprised all of them when, as a freshman, she won every event that she competed in the Passaic County meet. Since then, Stephanie has not lost a single event at this competition. When she is not practicing or competing she is still at the pool. She has a job as a lifeguard and gives swim lessons. In the future, she hopes to swim at the college level.

Silver Achieves Double Titles at IHA Photos courtesy of Angela Keller.
By Edward Kensik For a head coach just winning one Bergen County title is something to cherish, but how about two county championships in the same school year? Well, IHA’s Steve Silver accomplished that rare feat for the 201011 school year. In November the Blue Eagles girls soccer team took home the county championship. And then in February, IHA girls basketball team handed Silver his second county title for the school year. Silver reached that double title in girls basketball as IHA defeated Holy Angels, 58-35, to capture the Bergen County girls basketball title at Ramapo College on Feb. 26. It was the first county hoops championship since 2004 for the Blue Eagles and the first for Silver at the Washington Township school. “I was very excited and the whole school got behind them,” said Silver who won his first county title as the IHA girls basketball head coach in four tries. When it comes to Bergen County and going for a county and a state title, Silver knows that it is very difficult to do both. And like most teams IHA could not follow up with the state basketball title. “You have to pick and choose where to play the kids,” said Silver about the Bergen County and state tournaments. In addition the team that ousted them for the state tournament was none other than their rival, Holy Angels, who turned the tables on them in the Non-Public North A
semi-finals to the tune of 52-37. One group of girls though who quashed that usual mantra was the 2007, ’08, ’09 and 2010 IHA girls soccer team who have taken home 11 out of the 12 possible county and state championships. In November the Blue Eagles, the number one seed, shutout Ramapo, 2-0, to win the Bergen County girls soccer championship. “I told those seniors at the school dinner that this was a special group and head and shoulders better than the competition,” said Silver about his girls soccer seniors like Nicole Orlando, Erin McGovern and Gabby Cuevas. While the girls basketball team had been ousted in previous years before getting to the county title, the 2010 county girls soccer title finished off a great run by the seniors who had not lost a game in the Bergen County tournament and took home its fourth consecutive county girls soccer championship. The IHA run is only one of two runs of its kind in county history. The other county team that can match IHA’s run is Ramapo, who won five county titles from 1981-85. For Silver he started coaching varsity in 1989 as the Midland Park girls soccer head coach. During approximately a decade of time at Midland Park, he led the Lady Panthers girls soccer team to several state championships and Silver admitted that he benefited from having girls from Ho-Ho-Kus at that time. Currently, Ho-Ho-Kus students attend Northern Highlands. In addition he coached Midland
Park boys basketball to the 1997 state sectional title, the lone state championship for the school in that sport. And that title is one that Silver could possibly cherish the most. “They were all special,” said Silver about all his teams that he coached. “They (1997 Midland Park boys basketball) were all a great group of guys. They battled and battled and were really a special team.” Silver said that he saw the 1997 Midland Park boys basketball team progress over the years as freshmen to their senior season in ’97. Sandwiched between his days at Midland Park and IHA, Silver was head coach of the girls basketball program at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes where he had much success in the early 2000s. One of the biggest differences since he started in the late ’80s is the involvement of the parents. “The parents are more involved,” said Silver about today. “They have more financially involved with their children. The parents have more money involved in training and private instruction.” He added that today the parents have more invested in their children’s future and in turn causes some parents to act un-parent like. “I think parents can be irrational at times,” said Silver who graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood and Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Like Silver and other coaches, they hold mandatory coach, parents and athlete meetings before the start of the season to go over the rules and

IHA head coach Steve Silver discuss the upcoming season. At one time he coached all three seasons that included boys basketball, girls soccer and boys tennis at Midland Park. Today, he coaches the girls basketball and girls soccer along with coaching a club team in the offseason. By eliminating that third sport, he’s able to help as an assistant coach for his two sons, Michael, 8-years-old, and Daniel, six-yearsold, in baseball and soccer. Another topic of issue today is the battle between public and private schools. Silver has been on both sides of the controversy with his days at IHA along with Midland Park and Ramapo. There have been complaints by the public schools about the competitive imbalance and the advantage of the non-publics. But Silver does not see that there is a distinct advantage for the non-public schools. While at Midland Park and Ramapo he looked forward to battling with the nonpublics. He even recalls the days when as the Midland Park head boys basketball coach he took on Paterson Catholic. During the 1997 season where his team won the state sectional championship, they lost nail bitters to the powerful Cougars teams. Even when he was the girls soccer coach at Midland Park, it would be inevitable that he would face Morris Catholic in the state playoffs. At that time in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the state mixed the public and non-publics in the state tournament. “We really looked forward to facing Morris Catholic,” said Silver.

SOFTBALL The moment Katie Enright stepped onto the mound last year for Indian Hills, every batter in Bergen County stiffened with fear at the plate. That’s because this First Team All-State and All-County star was nearly untouchable all season. She tied a state record with a 31-2 record; shutout 21 teams; and allowed only 16 runs all season. Her stellar year helped Indian Hills capture the Bergen County championship. But now she is gone. And the 2011 softball season is wide open. Every team has a shot at capturing the county crown this year, but only a few have garnered the attention of NJ Sports to make our pre-season top 5. For a team like Ridgewood, pitching will be key if they hope to get back to the finals. IHA will once again rely on a high-powered offense to lift them back to glory. But don’t count out the small underdog that is Immaculate Conception.
Spr Sprin SSP Ge
Top 5 Teams 1.) Ridgewood — Returning All-County pitcher Nicole Hroncich along with 2010 Coach of the Year Patti Auger, make the Maroons the early favorites. Ridgewood will be returning in 2011 with a veteran team so look for them to take over where Indian Hills left off. 2. ) Immaculate Heart Academy — The Blue Eagles lost three AllCounty starters from last year’s team, who ended their season in the semi-finals of the county tournament. But leave it up to a program like IHA to be able to rebuild and rebound with ease. Junior infielder Carly Piccinich is ready to take over. 3. ) Immaculate Conception — A year after Fran D’Amato became the first Conception softball player to earn First-Team All-County honors, Immaculate Conception has an opportunity to make a run at their first county title. editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com

BASEBALL When Westwood and Pascack Valley met in the Bergen County championship game, it marked a turning point for Bergen County baseball, as the two teams that have dominated over the past decade—Don Bosco Prep and St. Joseph’s—were nowhere to be seen on championship day. Valley won their first county title since 1996 and keeping Westwood’s 30 year championship draught intact. But Pascack Valley didn’t even make our top 5 this year. That’s right, the county champions are out! The main reason for their slip is that the team graduated 15 seniors from last year’s team—eight of which started. The new Pascack Valley Indians have a lot of growing to do if they hope to climb back to the top. So who is number 1 this year? It was a difficult choice, but if everything goes well for Westwood, they won’t be on the losing side of the title game, again.
2010 Indian Hills Bergen County Softball Champions.
4. ) Indian Hills — Don’t be surprised that the reigning county champs are ranked fourth on our top 5. The Braves will have to fill the shoes of pitcher Katie Enright, which will make repeating as champions a lot harder. 5.) Paramus Catholic — The Paladins finished the 2010 season with an impressive 23-9 record. Senior catcher Erin Trippi and righthanded pitcher Jen Retzer will make every game against Paramus Catholic very difficult.
Top 5 Teams 1.) St. Joseph Regional — The Green Knights are a formidable opponent every year, so don’t expect anything less from this team. They finished 15-2 last season and 2010 was supposed to be a rebuilding year! We can only imagine what the Green Knights will do this season. 2.) Don Bosco — The Ironman are on their third coach in four years, yet they have found themselves in our top 5. Bosco’s reputation is enough to draw some of the area’s best talent. Add a coach like Mark DeManna who coached Bosco’s JV team last year and you have a program that hasn’t hit any speed bumps. 3.) Ramsey — This Group 1&2 Team of the Year will have some rebuilding to do after the graduation of outfielder John Capuano
Players to Watch 1.) Nicole Hroncich, junior pitcher, Ridgewood – with a 19-5 record as a sophomore and 177 strikeouts, Hroncich is arguable the best pitcher heading into the 2010 season. 2.) Erin Trippi, senior catcher, Paramus Catholic—Trippi batted an astonishing .550 with 29 RBI’s. But it was her defense behind the plate that made her so feared. She threw out 10 of 15 runners and didn’t allow a single passed ball all season. 3. ) Fran D’Amato, senior infielder, Immaculate ConceptionD’Amato was the first player in her school’s history to make first-team All-County honors. But it wasn’t hard to achieve with a batting average of .548.

and DH Rob Archetti. What they do have is the arm of First Team All-County pitcher Chris Mellis who will be trusted more than ever to keep this team in contention. 4. ) Paramus — Don’t underestimate coach Joe Cervino’s team. Cervino notched his 500th victory last season, but has yet to win a county title. This team, however, is inching closer and closer every year. The Spartans were 17-3 last season and entered the county tournament as the second seed. Senior pitcher Nick Henriquez and several returning seniors will hopefully get Cervino’s closer to that elusive title. 5. ) Westwood — With Chris Carroll on the mound this team has another shot to get back to the county championship. Don’t underestimate this squad
Players to Watch 1.) Chris Carroll, senior pitcher, Westwood—Finished last season with a 9-2 record, a 1.42 ERA and helped carry his team into the Bergen County Finals. If Westwood hopes to return for a shot at their first county championship in over 30 years, they will need Carroll to pitch just like he did last season. 2. ) Chris Mellis, senior pitcher, Ramsey—Finished last season with a 9-1 record, but his versatility is what gave Ramsey such an advantage. Mellis notched a save during the season and came out of the bullpen to start the 2010 campaign. 3. ) Chris Sullivan, DH, Wallington—Last year Sullivan notched an incredible streak of 23 hits in 11 games. He finished with one of the highest batting averages in the county (.577) and set the single season school home run record (9) and hits (45).
Last year, Mahwah’s boy’s lacrosse team shocked everyone with their incredible undefeated regular season and first Bergen County title. For a school that was only in its second season as a program, Mahwah snuck under everyone’s radar. But this year everyone knows their name. And with returning North Jersey Player of the Year, Mark Glicini, the Thunderbirds will once again be a force to be reckoned with. But the big question going into this season is: will Ridgewood return to form? After dominating the Bergen County lacrosse scene for most of the past decade, the Maroons have fallen out of elite stature allowing teams like Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep to build programs. And the public schools that always lagged behind have also risen to prominence. We have named our season’s top 5 teams and a couple of the players to watch in 2011.

1.) Mahwah — The reigning Bergen County Champions look to run the table again this year with 2010 Player of the Year Mark Glicini leading the way. Mahwah will be returning three first time All-County stars so look for the Thunderbirds to be on everyone’s hit list. They may have surprised every last year, but this season they have a target on their back. 2. ) Bergen Catholic — With the loss of their star, Sean McGuire, the Crusaders will be looking for some new leaders to step up. The Crusaders have graduated six seniors but will have back Jamie Ward who tied as the leading scorer from last season with 34 goals. They may have lost McGuire to the University of Maryland, but his younger brother Brandon has just arrived on the scene as a Freshman. According to head coach Joe Haemerle he will be a player to watch. 3. ) Ramapo — The Raiders got off to a rough start last season, winning only four of their first 10 games. But don’t count them out just yet. Seniors Chris Colaneri and Matt LaDucer will try and lead this veteran squad back to the top of the counties. 4. ) Northern Highlands — After winning five of their first six games last season, including a win over Ramapo, the Highlanders looked poised to make big run in 2010. But something went very wrong when the team only notched one win over the next six games. Inconsistent play nagged the Highlanders all season. The Highlanders will be bringing back an experienced team in 2011, and look for Patrick Routh to stand out of the pack. 5. ) Ridgewood — What happened to the Maroons? Just a few years ago the words Ridgewood and Lacrosse were synonymous with winning. But after a poor 7-10 season and a loss to Mahwah in the county tournament marked yet another disappointing sea-

The Ridgewood boys program may be declining but the girls are riding high. 1.) Mark Glicini, Mahwah Senior. We probably wouldn’t be talking about Mahwah this season if it wasn’t for Glicini. He finished the 2010 season with 65 goals and 36 assists. The reigning North Jersey Lacrosse Player of the Year is expected to have another big season as the Thunderbirds look to repeat as county champions. 2. ) John Sherlock, River Dell Junior. Last season Sherlock averaged 4 points per game and finished the season with 68 goals and 36 assists. River Dell had a promising season last year, going 14-4 before a shocking loss to DePaul knocked them out of the Bergen County Tournament. But Sherlock and the Golden Hawks could be one of this seasons surprises.
1.) Ridgewood — After losing the second game of the 2010 season, a fire was lit inside the Ridgewood players that sparked a 21-game win streak, a county title, a state title and a #4 national ranking. Losing Samantha Cermack to graduation will make things a bit tougher for the Maroons, but expect seniors Sally Jentis and Samantha Giordano to step up and take Ridgewood back to the promise land. 2.) IHA — The 14-4 Blue Eagles are potentially the only team that can take down Ridgewood this season, but their inexperience may hold them back yet again. IHA graduated three All-County starters. They will have a lot of learning to do before Ridgewood visits for their highly anticipated April 26th matchup. 3. ) Indian Hills — With a 17-4 record in 2010, the Braves are easily the second best public school behind Ridgewood. What makes them even more interesting is that their two best players last year were freshmen Nicole Kopyta and Natalie Carti. Now a year older, look out Bergen County. 4.) Mahwah — The boy’s weren’t the only ones doing well in 2010. Mahwah finished 16-4 and were the only team to defeat Ridgewood. it’ll be up to the next class to step up. 5. ) Glen Rock — The Panthers had a tough start last season, winning one of their first four games. But after getting things in order, Glen Rock went on a late season run and ended up in the Bergen County Tournament finals, thanks to the performance of then junior Kelly Yenko.
Top Players 1.) Sally Jentis, Ridgewood – Senior. Since leading the Maroons to a state title last season, Jentis has had a busy off-season. She committed to play lacrosse at the University of Florida next year and was named to the 2011 U.S. Under-19 women’s lacrosse training team. The star defensemen led the team in draw controls (63) and finished the season with 42 goals, eight assists, 37 ground balls and 10 interceptions. 2. ) Natalie Carti, Indian Hills – Sophomore. As a freshman Carti finished the season with a remarkable 99 points (63 goals, 36 assists). Indian Hills may be a program on the rise, ready to take over where Ridgewood currently stands. Look for Carti and fellow sophomore teammate Nicole Kopyta to leave their mark on Bergen County lacrosse this season.
The weather is getting warmer, the sun is staying out longer, and the runners are leaving the indoor tracks behind them. 1.) Teaneck — The Teaneck boys track team dominated the winter season so there is no reason why the Highwaymen won’t carry their success over to spring. Malcolm McKnight won the 55 meter dash at the Bergen County Relays, along with Warren Fields’ gold in the 600, Damien Elliot’s silver in the 400, Jamal Williams’ gold in the long jump, and Alex Ocansey’s first place in the triple jump. Yes, this squad is that good. 2. ) Hasbrouck Heights — This Heights team has the ability to really make a name for themselves if they can just get out of second place. They had four top three finishes at the counties, but only one first place victory. A little more work and this team may be something to watch 3. ) Ridgewood — The Maroons recently sent eight runners to the National Scholastic Indoor Championships, making them an elite squad. However, only three second place finishes in the counties has many wondering where this team is heading. The potential is there, now we’ll have to wait and see if the spring air will wake up this monster. Matt Beausoleil, Juan Llinas, and Pat Rynkowski could be the difference makers for the Maroons this season. 4. ) Ramsey — A young squad this team certainly has some stars ready to make a break. John Dugan claimed the only gold medal at the counties this winter in the 1600 meters, but several of his teammates are getting closer. Look for Alex Albanese and Chris Eltringham to put up some quality finishes this spring. 5. ) Indian Hills — The Braves will certainly miss 2010’s Athelte of editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com
the Year, Corey Crawford, but this is a team capable of maintaining their prestige in 2011. Indian Hills medaled three times during the county tournament this winter, including two golds by John Prizzi and John Dugan.
Girls Teams 1.) Paramus Catholic — The Paladins finished the 2010 season with eight First Team All-County athletes, including First-Team AllState and national champion junior Myasia Jacobs. Anything short of being the best team in Bergen County (maybe even the state) will probably not be enough for this killer team. 2.) Ridgewood — The Maroons walked out of the county tournaments this winter with four gold medals in the 1000 meter, 1600 meter, pole vault and pentathlon. Together with their boys team Ridgewood may be the best overall team in Bergen County. 3. ) Mahwah — Another team that performed well this winter, Mahwah’s Kim Nagotko crushed the runners in the 300 meter by almost two seconds in the counties. Carolyn Edler and Victoria Mold also walked away with a couple of medals. 4.) Indian Hills — Taylor Clarkson may be the strongest athlete on this Braves team. She won gold in the long jump this winter and silver in the high jump. Indian Hills left the counties with several top five finishes and a second silver medal. This team will be in contention for sure this spring. 5. ) Ridgefield Park — Maybe the surprise of the season, Ridgefield Park’s Stephanie Encarnacion helped give Park two medals this winter in the counties and the team walked away with a silver in the 55-meter hurdles to go with her accolades.

AT THE
BOARDWALK Alpher, Orecchio Wrestle to Silver Medals By Dennis Wilson Interscholastic wrestling in New Jersey is unique in that only 56 student/athletes finish the season with the thrill of victory and only 14 of those are crowned “state champions” every year. On Sunday (March 6) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, no local grappler ascended to the top
step of the medal podium but Paramus’ Nick Alpher and Don Bosco Prep’s Joe Orecchio came close with silver medal performances and for Orecchio it was a repeat of his finish in the 2009 states. Alpher was runnerup in the 145-pound bracket while Orecchio placed second in the 140pound competition. Picking
up fourth place medals were Bergen Catholic’s Connor Melde (135), Don Bosco’s Sal Mastriani (145) and St. Joseph Regional’s Dane McDermott (171). Bergen Catholic’s Johnny Sebastian, the Outstanding Wrestler of the Bergen County Tournament, was one of two Bergen County grapplers who
won their final bouts when his he posted a 6-0 decision over William Favia of Christian Brothers Academy in the 152pound fifth place final. The other was Pascack Valley’s Damian Murberg who registered a 3-1 decision over Connor Gabriel of Roselle Park in the 189-pound seventh place finale.

BOXING — JULIAN RODRIGUEZ

The Garden State Boxing Gym
Step into the Ring with
Julian Rodriguez By Dan Cappello At 4:00pm on a Monday afternoon, while most high school boys are at baseball practice or preparing for a track meet, Julian Rodriguez hides inside a dark, old factory building on Getty Avenue in Paterson. He sits on a wooden bench and laces up his flat soled shoes. Everlast punching bags hang from the ceiling; pictures of boxers like Floyd Mayweather draped in championship belts and late legends like Joe Louis and Arturo Gatti hang along the white and gray cement walls. The only sound came from a rumbling heating system, which pumps hot air into the room to help Rodriguez break a sweat. Black and gold championship belts run along the top of the gym. And, of course, a boxing ring, finished with a blue mat and black and red ropes is the centerpiece of the room. Rodriguez is not preparing for a lacrosse game or getting ready to pitch a no-hitter. He is home; or what he has come to page 22
think of as home — the Garden State School of Boxing. The owner, Alex Davila, also happens to be Rodriguez’s trainer, father and reason he is considered one of the best young boxers in the country. “I started training when I was seven and started competing when I was eight,” says the 16year-old sensation from Hasbrouck Heights. “My dad used to be a boxer and he used to take me to the gym because he took care of me. I just got up one day and wanted to do it. My dad stopped to train me and ever since then we have been traveling around the country gaining experience.” In October, Rodriguez traveled to San Antonio and won the National PAL Championships in the 132-pound weight class. The victory was impressive when considering that about four months earlier Rodriguez lost in the final match of the Junior National Championships in Jacksonville, North Carolina — a shocking blow to his young career. In 2010, Rodriguez claimed
the National Silver Gloves championship and was ranked the 2nd best junior boxer in the world in his weight class by USA Boxing. Other accolades include the Junior Golden Gloves (2004, 2008 and 2009), Ringside World Championships (2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009) and the 2007 National PAL Championship. “When it comes to boxing you either got it or you don’t,” Davila says about his son’s tenacity. “The skills could be developed but the intensity in the ring that is something you are just born with. And he always had it. He was always coming straight. Even when he got hit, the harder you hit him the more he came.” After lacing up his shoes, Rodriguez stands in front of a mirror and begins warming up with a jump rope. He moves effortlessly, like a ballet dancer in complete rhythm and appearing almost weightless on his feet. Rodriguez won his first title in 2004, when he traveled to Chattanooga, TN and won the Ten-
nessee Junior Golden Gloves. His belt hangs on the gym wall as a reminder of when everything started. “My favorite fighter is Salvatore Sanchez,” says Rodriguez, who in less than a decade has notched an incredible record of 108-7. “I like his style a lot because he was a boxer puncher. He could spar with you and knock you out and he could also box you really well.” Just like many successful boxers, Rodriguez picked everything up from his father. Davila started boxing after high school, when his days of playing baseball were over. He fell in love with the sport and attempted to make a run at a career, but he just didn’t have “it”. His son, however, did. “I sucked,” says Davila. “That simple. When you have a family you have to support your either making money or you’re not. So it was a lot easier for me to stop.” “Julian looked a lot better than me,” he says. “He was gifted, so it was an easy decision.” editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com

For Rodriguez there is no other sport that captures his attention more than boxing. He enjoys watching baseball and football like everyone else, but he would trade any big game for a classic match in the ring. It’s this love of the sport that has him dreaming of the Olympics. “I’m an amateur so it is the biggest of the amateur stage,” Rodriguez says. “In 2008 me and my dad went to Houston to go to the Olympic trials. It was just great being there. That could be me one day, you know?”

As the clock clicks passed 4:30pm and the heat inside the gym becomes intolerable, more amateur boxers enter for their workout. Rodriguez breaks between jumping sets and spars with himself in front of a mirror. He throws fast jabs and slices through the hot air with hooks and uppercuts. Rodriguez will fight next on April 8th in Nutley for a local boxing showcase. But his biggest challenge will begin on July 11th and will hopefully end on July 17th with Rodriguez winning the Junior National Championships in Mobile, Alabama.
Julian Rodriguez will fight next on April 8th in Nutley, NJ, before going after the Junior National Championship in July.

Let Your Dog Motivate You This Spring By Dan Cappello We never think to use our pets to help get us stay healthy. But in fact, pets are a great way to prevent many life-threatening conditions. Pets can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness. On the fl ip side, pets can increase your opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities and opportunities for socialization. A recent New York Times article reveals the results of several studies about the benefits of pets and the results were surprising. Dogs proved to be better
motivators for exercise than treadmills and other exercise equipment. Even older people with dogs were more likely to live active lives. We’ve put together a list of exercises (besides walking) that you can do with your dog to help increase your health. spending more time catching up to your pup. Soccer Here’s a great energy packed activity that you and your dog will enjoy. Go to park and kick a ball around, before you know it you’ll be sweating the calories away. Swimming If you have a pool and your dog loves to jump in then you may want to try swimming. Swimming is a great low impact sport but at the same time can be one of the best full-body workouts.

This goes for your dog as well. If your dog loves the water then let him swim with you. Use toys to help motivate and excite him and together you can both get a great workout. Dog Park Now you are probably thinking, how does this help me stay healthy? Well, physically it doesn’t have the same effect, but socially you can really benefit from spending time at a dog park. While you are there, talk with other owners, make friends and let your dog do the same.

Vitamin C The best way to fend off allergies is to boost your immune system. Try and ingest more Vitamin C in the weeks heading into spring and also alter your diet so you are eating fresher, healthier food. Exercise will also strengthen your immune system, all of which will help you battle allergies. Try these foods:
CITRUS FRUITS Oranges, grapefruit and other citrus fruits contain huge amounts of Vitamin C. Pick some up today.
Track Pollen Using the internet or even listening to your local weather station will make you aware of when pollen is thickest in the air. Also, restrict your outdoor early morning activity as pollen is usually thickest from 5:00am to 10:00am.
WHOLE GRAINS Vitamin E helps rebuild cells damaged by allergies and whole grain products, such as brown rice and whole bread will increase your Vitamin E intake.

Spring Cleaning There is a reason why so many people take spring cleaning seriously. Dust mites build up all every corner of your home. It is important to do a thorough cleaning of your curtains, bed sheets and carpets. Also replace all of your air filters.
RED & GREEN VEGETABLES One red pepper contains more Vitamin C than orange juice! Start incorporating red and green peppers, broccoli and leafy greens into your diet. Aside from them helping you this allergy season they are great for a complete, healthy diet.
In Northern New Jersey, that’s what happens every time our TEAM come(s) out to play. That’s why our State Farm® team is proud to support them all season long.

NJ High School Crew Ready to Take it to the Water Contributed by Maggie McKee, Junior, Academy of the Holy Angels
Back in November, when the New Jersey division of the New York Rowing Association derigged their boats one last time for the season, these high school students knew they had several months ahead of rigorous indoor workouts, but they also knew it was all for a good cause: the promise of a rewarding spring season back on the water. Land training for the crew includes running stairs, working on ergometers, which are indoor rowing machines, doing weight circuits, and taking trips to West Point to work on their indoor rowing tanks. These workouts can be tough, but the promise of the coming of spring keeps the team motivated. When asked about this year’s winter workout, Coach Tom Curry said “Honestly, for everyone in NJ this has been a long winter... but the long hours of work on the indoor rowing machines endured by the boys and girls will pay off on the water in the coming weeks.” As the weather gets warmer, the team is reminded of why
they hold such passion for this sport. Ask any crew member, and they will attest that the feeling of a boat gliding underneath you and being in perfect synch with the rest of the rowers in your boat is like no other. Many will tell you that the serenity of the water and the river’s surroundings are just some of the rewards that come with the hard work, immense focus, and excruciating technique that goes into each stroke. When asked what she loves about the sport, team member and Holy Angels sophomore Mary Kate Vigneron said, “Not only has crew made me grow stronger both physically and mentally but it has helped me to develop great friendships that will last forever.” Other members of the crew call it the “ultimate team sport”, and stress that the boats move most successfully when the motions of each rower are perfectly in synch, and that great bonds develop among the team’s members. Members are motivated to work hard during the winter months:
the trade-off is the thrill of crossing the finish line ahead of the other crews at the upcoming spring races. The NYRA NJ crew is eagerly anticipating the spring regattas, including races at Mercer Park in Central NJ, the Cooper Cup in Camden, NJ and the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, the largest high school regatta in the country. Summer plans include a trip to Canada for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. When asked about the challenges of preparing for competition, Coach Curry stated “Races are hard for coaches, you try to prepare the crews the best you can. When your crew shoves off from the dock at the regatta you hope, pray and wish they are ready for the battle that awaits them.” Success in high school rowing often leads to college recruiting, and can represent a huge advantage when applying to highly competitive institutions. Coach Curry has placed athletes in such esteemed programs as Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, Georgetown, Penn, MIT, Northeastern Wesleyan,
Wisconsin and Yale. The current squad includes students from Holy Angels, Bergen Catholic, Ramapo, Immaculate Heart Academy, Glen Rock, Ridgewood, Tenafly, Leonia and Dwight Englewood. Coach Curry hopes to extend the program to Elmwood Park, Paterson, Fair Lawn, and Hawthorne, especially those athletes without prior commitments to spring sports. In his experience with rowing, Curry has found that those who have the most success with the sport from the beginning include basketball players, swimmers, and hockey players. The New York Rowing Association has 40 scholarships available for 8th and 9th graders interested in the sport. We are looking for exceptional student athletes and/or students who come from economically disadvantaged families or are struggling to overcome a disability. For more information about the NJ crew of the New York Rowing Association, please contact Coach Thomas Curry at 917538-5792, tcurry@nyrowing. org or visit the NYRA website, at www.nyrowing.org

Hockey Rivals Find Common Ground: The Kaiya’s Cup to raise proceeds for coach’s daughter Contributed by Matt Sullivan
FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ — Like any long-standing rivals, the Ramapo and Indian Hills varsity hockey teams have engaged in some spirited battles over the years. The next time the sister schools square off, however, will be an exception to that rule. On March 26 at 3 p.m. at the Ice Vault in Wayne, the squads will assemble for the 5th Annual Kaiya’s Cup game, where the only goal that matters is the health and well-being of a sixyear-old girl. Ramapo coach Lee Barber’s daughter Kaiya suffers from Cerebral Palsy, which was the result of complications after birth. Although doctors told Barber and his wife, Jill, that Kaiya would never leave a wheelchair, she recently began walking without even the aid of a walker, and they are optimistic that she will soon begin speaking. Proceeds from the Kaiya’s Cup ticket sales, sponsorships,
and donations help the family with the ongoing costs of Kaiya’s medical care and various therapies. “We can’t express our happiness over how far Kaiya has come these last several years,” said Barber. “Her progress is con-

The essence and spirit of the Kaiya’s Cup should be an inspiration for all.” Braves’ team captain Justin Vollmin says the day is as rewarding for the players as it has been a blessing for the Barber family. “It’s a tremendous feeling to know that this event is having such a positive impact on Kaiya. There’s no doubt that this experience is going to stay with us all forever, and lead us to participate in other worthy fundraisers for the rest of our lives.” Information and sponsorship forms can be obtained by contacting Jerry Larkin at Jeremiah.Larkin@brookfield.com

A Look at the Progression of High School Game Taping and Highlight Reels Contributed by Ron Sticco, President, SSP VIDEO, LLC.
Established in 1991 as Specialty Sports Video Productions (SSP), located at 127 Roseland Avenue, SSP specializes in customized college recruitment videos and game day taping for high school coaches. The Early Years Football was the only sport filmed on a regular basis because it was a mandated rule by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) “That all member schools must exchange game films.” The most widely used format was 16 mm cellulose film, mixed in with some 8 mm home movies types. These film formats had been used at all high schools and colleges in the country since the 1920’s. After the game was over, the film was sent to a lab for
development and returned to the coaches in a day or two. A “noisy” Bolex camera, with no soundtrack, was the camera of choice, mostly used by the schools to shoot only football events. Around 1991, film started to phase out. A new format came upon the scene called ‘Beta Max/VHS’. Spring of 1991 to Present Specialty Sports Video Productions was founded along with the evolution of video tape “magnetic-tape/film in a plastic box carrier.” Film was gone forever, but never forgotten — the quality was superb. SSP began “taping” football games for area coaching staffs to perform analytical breakdowns of each game play, offense, defense and special teams. The coaches would get the tape immediately after the game. They loved it! No more waiting for their films to be developed at the film labs! Producing highlight tapes was a natural offspring prod-
uct of the games we filmed for the coaches. When parents, players and coaches noticed the new high tech format we were using i.e. and analog TV ¾” cameras, they approached us to find out if we could “cut/ splice” up the film and make a special “reel” just for their player, son or daughter to send to the colleges for coaching staff’s review. That’s how it all started. Over the years several different formats and cameras came along, and it became very confusing to standardize one or the other by the general public/former film shooters. SSP settled on two tape formats, regular or Super-VHS, recording onto a Panasonic 450AG series camera. Eventually ¾” BETA MAX was phased out, and was used only by cable TV networks, news services. These ½” VHS formatted cameras became the standard of the video industry, along with computer based editing system “linear editing” that
became the editing standard — a bit cumbersome, but it worked out well. These formats were the advent of the highlight tapes you see today, except now all are on digitally based, nonlinear downloaded computer based editing platforms, like Mac Final Cut Pro, Adobe, Avid Xpress, etc. SSP, LLC was at the forefront of these evolutions, and outside of a few cable/ TV sports shows, to the best of our knowledge, SSP as a private company produced the first ever VHS highlight for a Student Athlete in New Jersey! SSP, LLC was #1 back in 1991, and we are still #1 in the metro area in 2011! SSP would like to thank all our faithful customers over these years who trusted us, and had faith in us, that we could and would help their student athletes obtain all their recruitment goals successfully.

Rookie Coach Mike Massenzio Provides Boost to BCC Wrestling

For the past few years, not many people knew that Bergen Community College even had a wrestling team. Since their last winning season in 2004, Mike Massenzio’s last year competing at the college, the BCC Bulldogs wrestling program had fallen off of most people’s radar. Winless in the past three years and only having amassed a few wins in the years prior, the program was on verge of being dropped.

Ed Kojacki, a 3-time NJ State Champion and former coach of the program was not about to allow this to happen. He enlisted one of his former athletes, BCC’s top wrestler ever, 2-time NJ State Champion and JUCO National Champion Mike Massenzio to come in and resurrect the program. Mike went right to work. He scoured the BCC student body and started making calls to enlist all of the area’s potential wrestlers and began to assemble his team. The results were incredible. The overall team record was 73. It was also the first time that BCC finished in the Nation’s Top 25 and was ranked #6 in non-scholarship programs. The team got its first All American since Mike’s 2004 title, Garfield’s Frankie Buenafuente at the 149 lb. weight class. Frankie ended the season

with an impressive record of 28-2 and took third place at the National Tournament in Spokane Washington. Frankie’s teammate, also from Garfield, Kris Kucab placed third at the conference tournament and missed placing in the Nationals by one match. Mike was not only named as the Conference Coach of the Year, but the National acco-
lades were bestowed upon him as well! He was presented the JUCO National Coach of the Year Award prior to the finals on Saturday, February 26th.
