The OWC system, which is based on a European style of wrestling, has proven incredibly successful over the past 8 years as we’ve produced 14 State Champions and a total of 88 State Medalists since 2004.

Wrestlers from the Olympic Wrestling Club performed very well in the New Jersey and New York State wrestling tournaments. Olympic had 51 wrestlers qualify for the tournaments (36 from New Jersey and 15 from New York) and 17 of them medaled!

We couldn’t be prouder of our guys!

No other Club in North/Central Jersey can match this record!

COACH OF THE MONTH

Andy Escala, the Tenafly Tigers varsity ice hockey head coach with his team at The Prudential Center for the Public B state championship game.

• FITNESS • WELLNESS

SPO

Tiger’s senior goalie Jon Winawer led the way to the championship game giving up only 6 goals in 4 state games, and winning 2 OT shootouts.

Escala Helps Lead Tenafly to First State Title Appearance By Edward Kensik TENAFLY — Tenafly’s ice hockey team was skating on a Cinderella run in the state playoffs. They had gone four overtimes, two of which turned into shootouts and won every one of them en route to The Prudential Center for The Public B state championship in early March. The Tigers defeated Glen Rock, 2-1, in a shootout at the Mennen Arena in Morristown in the semi-finals. In that game Tenafly was four minutes away from not reaching the state title when junior forward Eli Markowitz scored for the Tigers to send the game into overtime. And then behind the goal keeper of Tenafly senior net minder Jon Winawer, the Tigers defeated Glen Rock for a trip to The Rock. It was an achievement for a program that is only 14 years old and for New Jersey hockey there are only three champions without any sectional titles like in basketball. But there was Tigers’ head coach Andy Escala, the only coach that Tenafly’s varsity team has known, his team and hundreds of white-shirted Tenafly fans behind him at The Rock, the goal of any New Jersey high school fan, in Tenafly’s NJ Sports Fitness & Wellness Telephone: (973) 605-1213 Fax: (973) 605-1883 editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com 173 Morris Street, 2nd Floor Morristown, NJ 07960 page 8

first state final game. His Tigers battled back-andforth with Summit as both teams only scored one goal apiece. Tenafly senior forward Eric Shalek provided their lone shot to reach the net. Like many times in the state playoffs, Tenafly was always coming back. And Shalek’s goal came about a minute after Summit scored the first goal. The Shalek twin brothers combined for the score as Eric’s brother Scott passed to Eric from behind the net to even the game at one. For three periods it could not be decided and the game went into overtime. If both teams did not score in the overtime period then there would be cochamps. In the extra session, Escala said that Summit just had a little more energy as Summit Riley Flynn’s slap shot went past Winawer with 5:01 remaining in the overtime. The Tigers were outshot 8-2 and in the end Winawer saved 26 of the Summit 28 shots on goal. “I just think Summit had a little more legs in them,” said Escala about playing another overtime game. Despite the loss in the state finals, his 2011-12 Tigers set a school record for victories

with 22 after finishing 22-4-2. “We knew that we had a strong team to get there and we were so close to winning the whole thing,” said Escala. “They worked hard and they played a team game.” And during the run of overtime games in the state playoffs, Tenafly’s Winawer stood

on his head to lead the way. “He played outstanding during the whole state playoffs,” said Escala. For Escala he said that the key this season was the balanced scoring across the board. “I think we had good depth with a lot of kids,” said Escala. “We did not have any

knows he has holes to fill with 11 players graduating including Winawer and the Shalek brothers. Along with coaching Tenafly hockey, Escala is also the middle school athletic director at Elisabeth Morrow School in Englewood. For seven years he coached

both baseball at Dwight-Englewood and ice hockey at Tenafly before deciding on just coaching ice hockey. “Hockey is just a faster game and you have more control of the game,” said Escala about the preference of hockey over coaching baseball. “For baseball it comes down to pitching.”

Before coaching he had played baseball at Jacksonville University in Florida, a NCAA Division 1 school. He played ice hockey at Peddie High School in Hightstown, New Jersey for two years after transferring from Dwight-Englewood where he played just baseball.

Third Place Finals

Bergen Catholic’s Johnny Sebastian and Don Bosco Prep’s Razohnn Gross completed their “Road to the Gold” by stepping to the top level of the awards podium at the conclusion of the NJSIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City. DePaul’s Dave McFadden and Don Bosco Prep’s Sal Mastriani picked up silver medals while Becton’s James Dugan turned in a third place effort. With one minute remaining in the third period, Sebastian trailed Hammonton’s Phillip Bakuckas 3-0 in the 160-pound title match. The sophomore escaped for his first point, picked up a second with 20 ticks remaining before converting a hip toss for a takedown and added three back points to rally to a 7-3 decision. Gross, a junior, became the Ironmen’s first-ever state champion when he pulled out a 5-3 victory over North Bergen’s Eric McMullen in overtime in the 195-pound bracket. In the OT period, Gross worked a single leg grab into the winning two-point takedown.

Dozen Youth Grapplers Capture NJ Kids State Titles Bantam Division

By Dennis Wilson Bergen Catholic’s David Brennen, Lakeland’s Spencer Carey, Pequannock’s Brenden Murphy and West Milford’s David Zeppetelli were among a cast of a dozen local grapplers who turned in gold medal performances in the 2012 NJ Kids State Wrestling Champions that concluded on March 17. Carey won the Intermediate Division’s 136-pound bracket when he pulled out a 6-5 decision over Kyle Murphy of the Edge in the title bout. Seeded No. 1, Carey posted a 4-2 decision over Tyler Mullin of Olympic in the semifinals after recording a 3-2 overtime verdict in the quarterfinals against Nico Cappetti of the Scorpions. He opened his quest for the crown winning a 5-2 decision over Luke Drugac of Morris Knolls in the pre-quarterfinals. Murphy claimed first place in the High School Cadet Division’s 135-pound bracket with an exciting 1-0 decision Joshua Gergeich of Roselle Park. He advanced to the final round by decking West Milford’s Aaron Furnbach 1:53 into the first period of the semifinals and pinning Andre Adams of Euight Planet in the quarterfinals. Zeppetelli reigns as champion of the High School Cadet Division 125-pound competition. Top-seeded, Zeppetelli defeated Thomas Poklikula of Ten Wrestling 7-4 for the crown. He registered a 61 decision against Eastern’s Roland Barbella and posted an 8-2 decision against Jack Nigro of Morris Knolls in the quarterfinals. Bergen Catholic’s David Brennan toppled Passaic Valley’s Muhammed Darwich for the 145-pound title. In the Junior Division, it was back-to-back conquests for Saddle Brook’s Vincent Andreano (80-pounds) and Westwood’s Shan Griffith (85-pounds). Pascack Hills’ duo of Kevin Mulligan and Eric Chakonis (215-Pounds) triumphed while Hackensack’s Joe Chucaralao won the 175-pound competition.

SPECIAL FEATURE

The Temptation of Specializing in One Sport “The Sports Edge” with Rick Wolff can be listened to every Sunday morning from 8am to 9am on Sportsradio 66 WFAN.

By Rick Wolff It’s a very natural assumption. Your youngster shows some real sign of athletic talent at a very early age, and a coach or perhaps a neighbor suggests that your son or daughter would be well-served to forego playing a variety of sports, as most kids do, and instead, just focus on soccer, or ice hockey, or whatever the sport may be. After all, the logic goes, if your kid plays that one singu-

lar sport pretty much all year round, that extra practice and game time is only going to accelerate your child’s growth in that sport — and will give him or her a real extra leg up on their peers. In other words, specialize. But the question still remains — and mind you, in my discussion today with my sports parenting colleague Bob Bigelow, there are no definitive studies on this topic that I’m aware of — of whether specializing

makes sense. Among the unanswered (but real) questions: • If my kid plays a solitary sport all year round, won’t that lead to burn-out in that sport? That is, won’t he or she begin to regard having to go to practice or play road games as something of an obligation, or chore, than being fun? As one of my callers on the show suggested this AM, if your kid eats chocolate ice cream every for seven years, won’t the thrill of eating that dessert wear off after awhile? • What about the concerns of repetitive use injuries? Lots of studies DO suggest that too much practice can cause serious wear-and-tear on a youngster’s joints and growth plates. Does specialization really make a difference in the long run? Invariably, no matter how much your youngster practices and plays on travel teams, eventually they will go only as far as their God-given talent will take them. And if there is one truth in this discussion, that’s the one that is universally accepted as true. So, what do you do? Well, above all, start by listening to your child and asking them what sport or sports THEY

want to play. That’s the key. Too many parents tend to drive the train on this issue. Instead, have the courage to listen to your son or daughter, and see what THEY want to do. That’s the way to insure that they stay motivated, fresh, and — oh yeah — actually have fun in their sporting endeavors.

Smesko Returns after All-American Junior Campaign By Sarah Jones Ridgewood will be at the top of the heap in the challenge for supremacy in the state girls’ lacrosse competition. The Lady Maroons will be led by senior midfielder Kelci Smesko who earned All-American accolades as a junior when Ridgewood repeated as the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions winner. Her classmates Kiley Donovan and Courtney Tarleton are proven, quality veterans while the Lauren Beausoleil, Maggie Carver, Kaitlin Concilio and Katie Smesko provide outstanding support. Gabby McMahon netted 61 goals and distributed 25 assist during her sophomore campaign for Immaculate Heart Academy which will offer a challenge to Ridgewood. She is joined by her sister Izzy, Lauren Reers, Maura Schwitter and Brittany Tarantino. Northern Highlands will be a formidable foe for everyone, as the Lady Highlanders will rely on senior midfielder Kate Callahan to provide the spark in the attack after establishing a single-season scoring record of 100 points when she netted 62 goals and dished off 38 assist. Her classmate Becky Corn is talented and will cause the opposition to prepare for a double-pronged

attack Emma Bolton, Sarah Durso, Morgan Lamb and Alexandra Shell will be heavily considered for all star selections. Indian Hills is another candidate for a state title as the firepower will be produced by junior middie Natalie Carr who has already registered 235 points in her two-year career after notching 17 as a sophomore. Nicole Kopyta is another junior who packs a lethal scoring shot while seniors Kayla Savage and Katie Taranto are the veterans on the field. Glen Rock might be a year away with a large array of subseniors, led by Fiona McDonald and Maggie Egan. Junior Claire Gallo is talented in the goal while Alexandra Ballman and Catherine Tatigan know where the goal mouth is. Looking for a surprise team? Take a peek at Waldwick which begins only its second season as a varsity program. The Lady Warriors have a pair of goalies, Meredith Levine and Christina LoMartire, who will keep all games close with the assistance of standout defender Alexa Iannatuano. The attack will be provided by seniors Karlin Heulitt and Jessica Torres along with junior Monica Torres. Other returning standouts are Cara Batelli (Mahwah), Kiara Boswick (Ramapo), Kayt-

Mahwah ranks as the leading contender for the Rizk Division crown in boys’ lacrosse competition. The Thunderbirds will be ignited by senior midfielder Bob Collins who will continue his academic/athletic career under the Golden Dome on the campus of the University of Notre Dame after netting 34 goals and distributing 16 assists as a junior. With defense a key to success in big games, the Thunderbirds are stocked with quality players surrounding senior goalie Mike Spera, including Jason Floyd and Steve Reuther. As usual, defending Bergen County champion Ridgewood will be a major factor in challenging for titles. Junior Noah Pounds is one of the elite goalies in the state and senior defenders Ryan Ghaderi and Tripp Tedesco will make the Maroons were difficult to score on. The entire attack component is in place with Garcia Logan, Max Luing and Connor O’Shea, so goals will be placed on the scoreboard. Bergen Catholic looks to rebound from a losing season into a contender with senior midfielder Brendon McGuire leading the way after recording 53 points, including 37 goals, as a junior. The attack will be back with seniors Nick Discola, and Jamie Piluso supporting McGuire. Senior goalie Matt Pedrick solidifies the “D end of the field. Glen Rock’s Tim Miller drilled 50 goals into opponents’ cages and added 16 assists as a junior in leading the Panthers’ to the co-championship of the Rizk Division a year ago. In addition to Miller, his classmates Pat Egan and Alex Walker are proven scorers while defensive standouts Toph Clark, Pat Keller and Matt Slodowitz return. With senior goalie Eric Heinowitz back, Indian Hills is projected to embark on a good season. Sam Greer, Tyer editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com

Larkin, Mike Pappalardo, Tyler Walker and Reed Zak are veteran attackmen. Don Bosco Prep, despite a large contingent of graduates, is a program that re-loads, never re-builds. The Ironmen retain junior attackman Max Allen as well as midfielders Nick Buchanan, Marc Buerman, Conor Scavone, Teddy Sisco and Max Troast. Other leading veterans are: Matt Brodley (Pascack Hills), Scott Cannon (Northern Highlands), Max Fields (Wayne Hills), Zach Hirsch (Ramapo), Mike Mazzana (DePaul), MacKenzie Peters (Wayne Valley), Evan Rowley (River Dell), James Temple (Northern Highlands), Tyler Van Benschoten (St. Joseph Regional/ Montvale), Thomas Williams (Dwight-Englewood) and Mike Sumbrano (Waldwick).

Greasing the Groove: How to Dramatically Increase Strength Contributed by American Eagle Mixed Martial Arts & Kettlebells

per week. Try Pull-ups and Pistols (one legged squats). Do 5 pull ups and 1 pistol five to 6 times a day. Increase one repetition of each exercise, each set per week. By the end of the 6 week period, you will be doing 50 to 60 pull ups per day and 30 to 36 pistols! This is quite an incredible improvement in strength. Then move to another exercise or two. Why does this work? Shouldn’t we train to failure and then recover and get stronger that way? ABSOLUTELY NOT! You increase your strength due to synaptic facilitation. By utilizing a relatively intense stimulation repeated frequently at full strength, increases the strength of the synaptic connections. In other words, more boost will be given to the muscle when performing a given exercise and the muscle will have learned to make a harder contraction and yield more strength. You may do the same with weights. If you are able to perform a maximum dead lift of

Strength, in certain movements eludes many of us. How do we harness this power? By Greasing the Groove — according to Pavel Tsatsouline, the father of modern day Kettlebell Training and Strength Development. It’s a very simple and pointed notion, yet requires great discipline. You have to retool your thinking from simply working out to practicing strength. If you desire to get better at a specific exercise, you will need to practice it throughout the day. Do not do your sets to complete failure; rather focus on doing 50 to 60% of your maximum. For example, if you would like to increase your pushups and you max out at 50, do sets of 25 or 30 reps 4 to 5 times throughout the day. You may want to vary the routine by performing 5 to 10 repetitions very slowly or a combination of the two. Only focus on one to two exercises for approximately 6 weeks. Do the routine 5 days

Picking an exercise such as pull-ups and doing it frequently 4 to 6 times a day for 6 weeks can build toward an incredible improvement.

400, do sets of 3 to 6 reps of 250. Do it 4 to 6 times a day. I have a friend of mine who increased his already respectable bench press by more than 75 pounds in 4 weeks! He was bench pressing 425 and started “Greasing the Groove” by doing 3 repetitions of 315 4 to 6 times a day 4 days per week. His bench press went through the roof in 1 month and he

broke the 500 pound mark! Pick an exercise, do it frequently 4 to 6 times a day and keep it up for 6 weeks and see how you improve. You will be astonished. Let me know your results. Good Luck! Train Hard & Train Smart! Coach Phil www.kettlebellking.com

Hard Hits: Exploring Sport-Related Concussion Contributed by Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation

From the National Football League to Little League, concussion — or mild traumatic brain injury — is a hot topic. And like the professional leagues, New Jersey is taking a long hard look at these injuries. In fact, the state recently enacted legislation to improve awareness and prevention of sport-related concussions. Concussive brain injuries are common among the state’s student-athletes, whether they participate in football, hockey, basketball, baseball, gymnastics or cheerleading. The greatest challenges for coaches, parents and school administrators, as well as the individual student, is that a concussion often goes unrecognized, which can lead to the disruption of academic, social and emotional functioning. Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, one of only 14 federallydesignated Model Systems in the nation for brain injury rehabilitation, has pioneered this field for more than 60 years. As part of its renowned Brain Injury program, Kessler offers a specialized Concussion Clinic to effectively identify and treat sport-related brain injuries, as well as to provide baseline screenings, post-injury evaluations and educational programs to school districts throughout the state. To provide a better understanding of concussive injuries, Kessler Institute discusses the complex symptoms, treatment and return-to-play guidelines in the following Q&A. What is a concussion? A concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury, occurs when a blow or jolt to the head or body disrupts normal brain function, typically causing a change in mental status or consciousness. Although evidence of a concussion may not be apparent through CT or MRI scans, microscopic damage to the soft tissues of the brain may have taken place and long-lasting page 28

cognitive and behavioral effects can result. How does a concussion occur? The brain is a soft organ surrounded by spinal fluid and protected by the hard skull. Normally, the fluid around the brain acts like a cushion to keep the brain from hitting against the skull. However, a sudden, sharp or violent blow to the head or even to the body can cause the brain to crash against the skull. This temporarily prevents the brain from working normally. What is the risk of injury? The risk of sustaining a concussion is significant – particularly when an individual engaging in any sport or activity where speed, person-to-person contact, or person-to-object (such as a ball) is involved. In fact, nationwide, more than 3.8 million student athletes will sustain some type of sportsrelated brain injury each year. Mild traumatic brain injury can also be caused by motor vehicle accidents, falls and physical violence. In what sports are we most likely to see concussions? The greatest risk of injury occurs in high-contact sports, such as football, hockey, boxing, soccer and basketball. Football-related injuries are the most prevalent, despite the use of helmets and other protective gear. Boys have a higher incidence of concussion than girls because they are more likely to be involved in contact sports. However, girls have a greater susceptibility to concussions than boys, particularly in certain sports like soccer and cheerleading. How dangerous is a concussion? A concussion will often result in a brief loss of consciousness or a period of confusion. Symptoms (see below) may last anywhere from a few seconds to several weeks but most people

recover within four weeks. Repeated concussions or a severe concussion may lead to longlasting problems with movement, learning, or speaking. In some cases, concussions can produce more serious or even life-threatening problems, such as if any bleeding occurs in the brain. That’s why it is critical for an injured student-athlete to receive appropriate medical attention, even if symptoms do not appear to be serious. What are the initial symptoms of a concussion? Symptoms vary greatly and unlike a sprain or broken bone, the signs may not present themselves immediately. Typically, however, the initial symptoms may include: • Headache • Dizziness • Nausea or vomiting • Confusion or disorientation to time, place • Loss of memory for events preceding injury • Difficulty remembering new information • Drowsiness or lethargy • Disruption of balance • Sensitivity to light or noise • Visual blurriness or fuzziness • Clumsiness, stumbling, or slowed movement Are there additional symptoms a student-athlete might have? Following an injury, individuals may also begin to experience a range of difficulties, including: • Change in mood, often dis played as restlessness, sadness or irritability • Problems with concentration, attention, memory, thinking or multi-tasking • Ringing in the ears • Changes in normal sleep patterns – sleeping more, less or not being able to sleep at all • Feeling mentally slower, “foggy” or “groggy” What should parents, teachers, coaches and

others watch for? Those closest to the individual may notice other changes in cognitive, behavioral and emotional status, such as: • Odd or unusual behavior and emotional outbursts • Unexplained drop in grades and/or social functioning • Difficulties in social functioning or isolation • Confusion, Emotional distress, frustration or feelings of “going crazy” • Short-term loss of newly learned skills or memory/ recall problems What should be done when an injury occurs? Any athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion should be removed from competition immediately and examined by a trained professional. If the player experiences a loss of consciousness, even if just for a few seconds, he/she should be taken to the emergency room for a thorough neurological evaluation. What kind of testing is available? A cognitive assessment should be part of a pre-season physical. This important tool, which is increasingly being used at both the professional and school-age levels, helps to establish a baseline measure of cognitive functioning that can be helpful in diagnosing the extent of any brain injury. Today, most schools require that student athletes undergo imPACT™ testing. What is imPACT testing and why is it so important? ImPACT™ testing is a computerized assessment of an individual’s cognitive skills, such as thinking, learning and attention. Administered by a physician, neuropsychologist, athletic trainer or other licensed healthcare professional, the test provides an important baseline point-of-reference for the student-athlete. SPORTS • FITNESS • WELLNESS or even suspected, the individual is re-assessed and scores are compared to identify any cognitive changes and the extent of injury. The findings are helpful in determining the need for treatment, as well as in establishing a return-to-play timetable. When can an injured player return to play? Although there are no formal or clear-cut guidelines, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) recommends that any student athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion be immediately removed from play and not be allowed to return that day. The individual should be evaluated by a physician experienced in treating mild traumatic brain injury. It’s important to keep in mind that it takes time for the brain to recover. Rest is critical and, depending on the recommendations of medical and cognitive rehabilitation specialists, the athlete should limit activities for a period of time. Once given clearance, he/she should follow a gradual six-step physical return-to-play evaluation period.

How dangerous is it to return to play too soon? Perhaps the greatest danger in returning to play too soon is the risk of sustaining another concussion. Multiple concussions, particularly when they occur over a short period of time, can have a cumulative effect, resulting in lasting cognitive and behavioral impairments. What about the pressure to return to competition? No student-athlete likes to be sidelined, but they do need to be honest about any problems they may be experiencing. All too often, players will disregard their symptoms, “tough it out” or try to cover up any deficits in order to return to play quickly. They do this so that they will not lose their competitive edge or their position on a team, or let their team and coaches down. However, these young athletes need to editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com

understand that ignoring their symptoms can result in serious complications and long-term problems. What is the role of coaches and teachers? Coaches, trainers and others involved in a school’s athletic program need to help their players to understand that in the game of life their health and well-being is paramount. This can be difficult given an athlete’s desire to play – and a coach’s desire to have him/ her on the field, especially if a “star” player is injured. But that is why it’s even more important for coaches, teachers, and parents to be able to recognize the range of symptoms and work together to monitor a player with a suspected injury. How does an injury affect classroom performance? Often overlooked is the academic performance of a player while he/she is recovering from a concussive injury. In some cases, a player may be required to miss some school or may have difficulties in the classroom with attention, concentration, test-taking and other tasks. Although most individuals will recover within days or weeks, accommodations may need to be made for the student during that time. What are the outcomes for injured student-athletes? A concussion is a serious injury, but the good news is that most individuals do make a full recovery. With stronger guidelines and new school policies in place, as well as access to effective assessment tools and specialized treatment, an injured student-athlete is likely to be able to resume play in a timely manner. Critical to this is the ability of parents, teachers, coaches and others to understand and recognize the symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury and partner with health care professionals to optimize the individual outcome. What services does Kessler offer to schools throughout the state? Building concussion aware-

AWARENESS AND PREVENTION ness, implementing testing programs, developing prevention strategies and managing players’ injuries can be challenging. With extensive experience and expertise in treating brain injury, Kessler is working closely with schools throughout the state to provide imPact testing and post-injury neuropsychological evaluations. Kessler also offers schools a Concussion Awareness Program, which includes presentations on a variety of concussion-related topics, as well as consultative services to help school districts with policy development and related guidelines. What do the schools have to say? “Working with the experts at Kessler has been an extremely positive and productive experience. Northern Highlands’ partnership with Kessler is a prime example of a professional relationship that benefits our student-athletes, parents, coaches and recreational volunteers. We are thankful to Kessler for this focus on com-

munity outreach.” – John J. Keenan, Superintendent, Northern Highlands Regional High School “The safety of our studentathletes is of the utmost importance at Cresskill. We felt this relationship with Kessler would create an opportunity to bring in brain-injury experts to present the facts to our coaches, training staff and parents. I attended the presentation myself, and thought Kessler did an excellent job explaining the signs, symptoms and effects of concussions, return-to-play strategies, and complications that could arise if these injuries are not taken seriously.” – Loretta Bellina, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools, Cresskill Public Schools.

Huntington Learning Center Celebrates Mathematics Awareness Month Local learning center observes 27th annual math appreciation event during April 2012 RIDGEWOOD, NJ (Grassroots Newswire) February 23, 2012 — Huntington Learning Center in Ridgewood joins schools, colleges, universities, student groups, and other related associations and interest groups to celebrate Mathematics Awareness Month this April. Mathematics Awareness Month began in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation for National Mathematics Awareness Week. The annual celebration is a collaboration of the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America and the Society for Industrial Applied Mathematics. The theme of this year’s Mathematics Awareness Month is “Mathematics, Statistics, and the Data Deluge,” to bring to light how mathematics and statistics provide the tools to understand the massive amounts of data collected every day from many different networks, instruments, devices and other sources. Math helps protect people from the misuse of such data and also is the key to using data sets for numerous business and other opportunities. “We live in an era where technology plays a crucial role in our daily lives,” says Sena Salloum of the Ridgewood Huntington Learning Center. “Data is everywhere, and used every time we go to the grocery store, every time we use the Internet. This year’s theme for Mathematics Awareness Month really speaks to the practical application of math—something we try to instill in students. Math is used everywhere, all the time. We’re proud to celebrate Mathematics Awareness Month as a valuable skill that can prepare students for so many different careers.” Even at a young age, parents can help their children learn the importance of math in everyday life. Salloum offers a few ideas for parents to help their child practice math while at home or on the go: 1. Have your child help you make a recipe and put him or her in charge of all measuring. Ask questions along the way—is two ¼ cups the same as a half cup? How can you tell? 2. Try fun family projects that

use math. Measure each family member’s height and/or weight on a monthly basis and calculate any change in percentages from month to month. Create a graph to track results. 3. Ask your child to estimate the grocery bill while you shop. 4. Let your child plan a family road trip, estimating how long it will take to drive to each destination based on the speed limits and distance. Have him or her calculate the trip cost based on the cost of hotels, meals and other expenditures. 5. Teach your child to save, and talk about the effect of compound interest. 6. Play games that use math, such as Yahtzee, Monopoly, UNO and dice games. 7. Play games that foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills, such as Sudoku and chess. For more tips to help students learn math, view Huntington’s parent guide, Helping Your Child Learn Math at the Amazon.com Kindle store. Homework 101 for Parents RIDGEWOOD, NJ (Grassroots Newswire) March 12, 2012 — As your student becomes increasingly independent in school and his or her homework becomes more difficult and involved, perhaps you’ve wondered how your role in homework time should evolve, too. “Many parents are uncertain about how much they should help their children with homework, or feel that they’re unable to assist them appropriately,” says Heather Ottogali of the Ridgewood Huntington Learning Center. “However, there are many simple things parents can do to help their children without overstepping their role.” Ottogali offers these tips to help your child during homework time: Help establish an organizational system and homework spot. From an early age, teach your child to keep an organized homework space or desk equipped with the supplies he or she needs. Encourage your child to tidy up this space at the end of every homework session so it is always easy to dive into homework quickly. Work on a homework routine. Establish homework time as an important part of your child’s nightly schedule and help him or her manage his or her study time wisely. Be supportive of the homework routine, too. Don’t watch television while your child tries to study at the kitchen table or be unavailable for questions during your young student’s homework hour. Be on hand for questions. Even at an older age, your child may need help interpreting homework directions or want feedback on his or her work. Effective parental monitoring requires understanding your child, too. The self-starter who understands class work easily may need less hand-holding, while a child who is less responsible about homework may have many questions and need extra support in becoming an independent student. Teach problem-solving. No matter the subject, if a student knows how to think critically, identifies areas where he or she doesn’t understand something, and breaks down complex problems or tasks into simpler ones, homework time will be a much more gratifying process. Help your child think through homework by asking questions and having him or her explain concepts or problems to you. Give positive, specific feedback. Let your child know the value you place on school and homework, and celebrate his or her milestones and successes. Compliment hard work. Point out a job well done, a clean desk, the acquisition of a new skill. Frequent encouragement is important to build students’ self-esteem and work ethic. About Huntington Learning Center: Founded in 1977, Huntington Learning Center is the nation’s longest-running supplemental education services provider. Today they continue to be an industry leader providing instruction in reading, writing, spelling, phonics, mathematics and study skills as well as SAT and ACT preparation to tens of thousands of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Drawing Out Your Child’s Creativity By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington When children are very young, they are naturally curious, inventing games, songs and stories, seeking answers to endless questions, and much more. Yet as children become older, some lose some of their creativity. Instead, they look to teachers and parents for direction and approval, concerning themselves with “right” answers instead of appreciating the process by which they come to conclusions. However, creative thinking is incredibly valuable and teaches children to enjoy learning for learning’s sake, which will generally result in a more successful student. How can you encourage your child to think creatively? Here are several ideas: Expose your child to a variety of creative people. Take your child to “open mic” night at the coffee shop or to a local art gallery to watch an artist sculpt or paint. Showing your child

the many different types of things he or she can do - from art to music, from science to writing - and introducing him or her to people who enjoy and excel at those things will encourage him or her to attempt new undertakings. Let your child experiment. Whatever the activity, let your child be his or her own guide. Let your budding cook make up recipes in the kitchen. Offer tools and supplies, and let your child create whatever he or she can imagine. Offer quiet time. From a young age, set aside free time each day for your child to play independently - doing whatever he or she chooses. Better yet, designate quiet time as a family activity. Try games or activities that teach problem-solving. Games like chess, Battleship and Risk teach creativity and strategy, showing children how to consider multiple scenarios, weigh pros and cons, and debate different ideas. Ask why. When your child asks you to double-check his or her work, have him

or her explain how he or she arrived at the answer, step by step. When your child shares an idea or opinion, ask why. How did he or she develop that opinion? Why does he or she feel differently than you or a friend? Why is this important to him or her? Fostering creativity in your child leads to many important benefits. Your curious learner is more likely to challenge him or herself, learn from his or her mistakes, question assumptions and think critically. Such skills will help your child grow into an independent student and a lifelong learner. Parents who want additional information are encouraged to call the local Huntington Learning Center at 201-261-8400 Ext. 515. Dr. Raymond J. Huntington and Eileen Huntington are co-founders of Huntington Learning Center, which has been helping children succeed in school for more than 30 years.
