Junior, Bobby Corcoran led a 1-2-3 finish for Indian Hills in the Boys B Division of the Season Opener with teammates, Hee Tae An and Chris Evans. Placing first, Corcoran ran a 16:21 on the September 14 race and continued to lead the Braves team in the third Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational just a few weeks later. The large race features 130 teams from eight different states and the Indian Hills Boys won their third straight Six Flags Invitational in the C Division. The team placed their first six runners in the top 23 spots with Corcoran leading the pack with a personal best time of 16:02, again just ahead of teammates Hee Tae An and Evans who came in 4th and 5th place. Corcoran, still only a junior, has another two seasons ahead of him as he looks to continue to lead the Indian Hills Boys to a Championship season.
Ariana North is considered one of the leading female runners in the state and pulled in a win September 14 during the Bergen County Season Opener in Mahwah with a time of 18:53 in the A Division. Just this past weekend, North, the Bergen County cross-country defending champion was also victorious in the Division C race at the Shore Invitational. North is a stand-up student athlete, proving to be a dedicated runner and student at Northern Highlands, a NJ school that has one of the top HS rankings in the state. North is on the National Honor Society and also has earned up to a 4.0 GPA. A star student athlete, Ariana looks forward to choosing a college with a strong college running program and to continue her successful Cross Country career.

Nick Delcalzo, Hasbrouck Heights’ football head coach
Delcalzo Going Strong After 200 By Edward Kensik HASBROUCK HEIGHTS Somebody asked Nick Delcalzo if he can win another 100 games. And he thought about it and thought that he will be 73 when he would be on the verge of winning his 300th game. “I will be 73 when that happens so no,” said Delcalzo. But right now he is enjoying working with his assistant coaches, most who played for him during his 27 years as head coach at Hasbrouck Heights and with the players that he coaches right now. And his 2012 team did it in grand style for him in winning his 200th game on Sept. 21 with a 40-6 victory at North Arlington. For Delcalzo he has won two state championships and is hoping to win another one this season as his team is 50 midway through the season after defeating Emerson at the beginning of October. The most memorable might be the 2007 team which defeated New Milford at Giants Stadium. What is memorable about it was the start of NJ Sports Fitness & Wellness Telephone: (973) 605-1213 Fax: (973) 605-1883 editor@sportsfitnesswellness.com 173 Morris Street, 2nd Floor Morristown, NJ 07960 page 4
that season. “It was a magical year,” said Delcalzo who added at the home opener he spotted a rainbow. “In the first game it was the first one on the new turf, my granddaughter was born the day of the game and my son (Kevin) caught the game-winning touchdown pass (14-11 over Cresskill.” For Delcalzo the black and orange of the Aviators has been all he has known in terms of coaching. And outside of playing club football back in the 70s for Seton Hall Univer-
sity, it has all he has known in terms of sports dating back to junior football. “I’m very fortunate to be in a small town and I love the community,” said Delcalzo. As a student at Hasbrouck Heights, he played football, baseball and basketball at the school until he graduated in 1971. When he was working for the United States Army in Bayonne, he received a call from then head coach Pete LaBarbiera, his coach at Heights, to
be an assistant coach. He had already coached junior football at Heights while he was going to Seton Hall. And he snapped it up as an assistant coach at Hasbrouck Heights. He coached mainly the backfield, but LaBarbiera wanted him to coach in other areas. “He told me that if you’re going to be a coach you have to coach the offensive line,” said Delcalzo about LaBarbiera who lives in Paramus and they still talk and even text constantly. “He is

my mentor.” For the next 10 years he would be an assistant coach, mainly for LaBarbiera and then for a couple of years to Jeff Sheets. When Sheets became a vice-principal, the school district turned to Delcalzo. “They asked me if you are sure that you want the job because you have to be crazy,” said Delcalzo recalling at the time. When Delcalzo took over the job in 1985, the pressure on the Hasbrouck Heights was intense especially after the success of LaBarbiera. In his first two years the Aviators made the state finals, only to fall to New Milford in both years including a double overtime loss in 1985. His teams always had a winning record, but he finally got his state title in 1994 when the Aviators defeated North Arlington at then Giants Stadium. Over the years, football has not been the only sport that he has coached. He cur-
rently also coaches bowling and golf, but he has coached pretty much every sport at the school including 29 years as head of the Lady Aviators softball team. One of his teams that he looks fondly on is girls basketball where the 1979-80 team won a state title, the first in the sport for the school. Along with LaBarbiera he said the biggest influence on him was his freshman basketball coach at Hasbrouck Heights in Danny Morrow. “He really taught me about the fundamentals of sports,” said Delcalzo. For his success he gives a lot of credit to his wife, Gloria, who has supported him through the ups and downs. He even said that he helped drive his girls basketball players to Paterson to play an AAU team during the summers of his coaching years. And he will never forget when one principal told him one time. “When the football team has a good year so does the academic standings of the

school,” said Delcalzo. Over the years several of his former players have come back to coach like current assistant coach Rocco Minichiello to help him and the Hasbrouck Heights continue the
fine football tradition that has dated back for several decades. “I’m very fortunate that the players come back to coach and all the kids are great,” said Delcalzo. “That is what keeps me going.”

Aviators’ Delcalzo Surpasses 200-Win Plateau By Dennis Wilson Nick Delcalzo is a legend who still walks the sidelines as Hasbrouck Heights and continues to rack up victories in his 27th campaign as head coach. On Friday night, September 21, the Aviators rolled to a 40-6 victory over North Arlington in a NJIC gridiron clash to present Delcazo with his 200th coaching win. DelCalzo’s complete career, starting as a high school player and becoming a father of scholastic standouts, are blended with his coaching achievements at Depken Field which was the original high school facility with lights in Bergen and Passaic counties. On Friday, the Aviators routed Emerson 41-6 for Delcalzo’s 201st victory. With 7,500 screaming fans in the stands at DiNallo Sta-
dium in Montvale, the Green Knights of St. Joseph Regional/Montvale pulled out a classic 38-37 overtime victory over Bergen Catholic in a Big North Conference – United Division showdown. Junior quarterback Spencer Aukamp pitched a 25yard TD strike to his classmate, wide receiver Quai Jefferson on the first play of overtime for head coach Tony Karcich’s squad. Aukamp finished with 144 yards passing for two touchdowns and 89 yards rushing. On Saturday, October 6, Crusader senior quarterback Jon Germano placed his name in the Bergen Catholic record book when he connected with John Feaster in the second quarter on a two-yard TD strike for his 47th career touchdown pass, erasing the previous standard of 46 set by Matt LaVecchio of

the Class of 2000. Germano finished the Crusaders’ 55-19 romp over DePaul at Crusader Stadium throwing for three TDs and running into the end zone on two occasions. Every now and then, small Group I public schools produce a “Group IV” lineup without recruiting like the non-pub-

ning News as well as the current Star-Ledger. This year’s Cardinals offensive front wall averages 240 pounds, similar to that of an NCAA Division III program. On Saturday, October 6, Pompton Lakes, the defending NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group I champions extended their winning streak to 12 straight with a 45-0 rout of a talented Glen Rock squad at Herschfield Park in Pompton Lakes. Quarterback Robbie Meyers flipped TD tosses of 22 yards to Tony Capobianco who also booted a 28-yard field goal and 24-yards to Kyle Stefanic while Brandon Torres picked off a Panther aerial and raced 34 yards into the end zone to highlight the diversified scoring. Top individual performances over the weekend reported to the Metropolitan New York Football Writers’ Association included Westwood’s Ryan Galloway all-purpose performance that produced two running TDs, a 75-yard touchdown reception, a 60-yard punt return into
the end zone and a successful pair of two-point conversions. Cresskill running back Tommy Hollenfer rushed for three TDs and returned a fumble 38 yards into the end zone while Bogota’s Gordon Kohles rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns while throwing a 44-yard TD pass. Ramapo exploded with 28 points in the third quarter after leading 10-7 at the halftime break, to defeat Wayne Valley 45-13 in a Big North Conference clash on Friday evening. Quarterback Anthony Lovecchio opened the second half
scoring by connecting with Logan Schulte on a 73-yard touchdown pass and raced one-yard into the end zone for a second six-pointer. Skylar Amador located a seam in the Indian defensive front wall and broke loose for a 48-yard TD run before Connor Krup put six on the board for the “D” when he picked off a Wayne Valley aerial and dashed 12 yards into the end zone. LoVecchio had opened the scoring in the scoring in the first quarter when he tossed a 15-yard TD toss to Neil O’Connor. BOYS SOCCER By Bryan Wasylak Cliffside Park’s Jim Fucci was presented his 200th career victory on Monday, September 24 when the Red Raiders trounced Westwood 7-0 in an NJIC matchup to highlight his 13th season at the helm. The Indians raised $5,500 on Monday, September 24 for the family of a local seventh-grader who

Teaching Kids Leadership Contributed by Huntington Learning Center
RIDGEWOOD, NJ (Grassroots Newswire) September 20, 2012 - Most parents recognize the importance of time management, strong communication, good listening and other study skills, but what about leadership? “Your child doesn’t have to aspire to be the next president of the United States to benefit from the lessons of leadership,” says Heather Carroll, Ridgewood Huntington Learning Center operator. “Activities and programs that instill leadership help teach children about perseverance, conflict resolution, building one’s character, goal setting and more.” Carroll offers parents these tips to help their child develop leadership skills: Encourage volunteering for a cause your child cares about. What gets your child excited? Animals? The planet? Helping other kids? Encourage
your child to make a difference through volunteering, or try doing service learning as a family. Getting involved is a wonderful way for kids to discover a passion, make friends, and share their experiences and excitement with others. Give your child opportunities to teach others. Whether it is a sibling or a classmate, children who teach their peers often become more engaged in the subject matter. If your student is a good reader, how about reading to younger siblings and teaching them reading basics? Your child will build a sense of pride in sharing his or her knowledge and helping others learn something new. Check out extracurricular activities. Your child’s school likely has a plethora of clubs and activities with which your child could get involved. Sports are an obvious way to instill in your child the lessons of hard work, teamwork and
determination, but if your child isn’t interested in athletics, don’t overlook things like student council, yearbook, drama club, music, math club, science club or a student ambassador program. Explore leadership programs and camps. Do you live near a college? Check to see what programs they have for rising middle and high school students. Some colleges offer enrichment, college preparatory or other programs for children and teens designed specifically to build leadership aptitudes. How about experiential or other types of leadership camps in your area? You can check with your child’s teachers, guidance counseling office and school district for suggestions or referrals. Carroll encourages parents to be creative when it comes to leadership development opportunities for their child. “The key is to empower your child to take on new responsibilities, strive for things
he or she wants, take risks, and recognize and build his or her strengths. Doing so will help your child become a more engaged and involved student and citizen.”

Phil Can you Train with both Kettlebells & Weights? Ask Zack Fox Contributed by American Eagle Mixed Martial Arts & Kettlebells
By Phil Ross I get asked that question quite a bit. Generally, it’s asked by those who have been avid weight lifters, but are curious about the benefits of kettlebells. A large majority of these inquisitive people are not knowledgeable in the science of Kettlebell Training; I use this opportunity to educate them. The answer is a resounding “Yes”, but if you are new to kettlebell training, you should first take some time and train solely with the Kettlebells for a while in order to allow your body to acclimate to the new type of movement. There are inherent differences between the manner that Kettlebells develop strength and standard resistance training with weights. Allow your body to develop a familiarity with the Kettlebells prior to incorporating your weight training. As a general rule, I suggest 6 weeks. No worries - you won’t lose any strength - as a matter of fact, when you start back to your weight training - you will see that you are able to
lift heavier weights than you could beforehand. Your per pound power will increase significantly and you will have to spend less time in the gym and more time working on the skill set for your sport. The Eastern Block countries have been using kettlebells since the 1800’s. All of their weight lifters, throwers, track & field, combat athletes and military personnel have reaped in the benefits of Kettlebell training for years. This is one of the reasons that they have been so successful. The Russians are known for their great strength – the one major training factor that has eluded us Westerns until recently is their use of Kettlebells. Modern day power lifters routinely use Kettlebells to improve their hip-hinge for dead lifting. The major issue that is faced with doing both Kettlebells and standard weight training is the potential for over-training. If you are partaking in both, define your goals and be sure to consult a professional. For example: Zack Fox, former All-American HS Lacrosse
player for Don Bosco Prep at 20 years old, decided to dedicate his efforts and energies to becoming a mixed martial artist. He showed up at my studio weighing in at 225 lbs at 5’8”. He’s a bull, but far too short at that weigh to be a competitive fighter. He was bench pressing 510 lbs, squat of 650 lbs and dead lift of 650. He began training in Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kettlebells. After 8 weeks of rigorous training, Zack took Second Place in the NJ State BJJ Championships and now weighs 196. His Bench Press is now 520 lbs., Squat is 680 lbs and has a Dead Lift of 680 lbs.! How is this so? He’s almost 30 lbs lighter and lifts weight only twice week - yet his numbers have gone up while his body weight has decreased. The flexibility, muscular endurance and core strength development of Kettlebell Training is unmatched. Zack has some very high numbers, but in 8 short weeks, he’s increased his power lifting numbers by 4% and decreased his body weight by over

13%. Not only has his pound for pound strength increased, but his overall increased as well. If you need to put on some extra mass for your sport or if you are a competitive weightlifter, training with Kettlebells combined with standard weight training are extremely beneficial. Unless you are a body builder, stick with the major mass exercises. Bench – flat, incline and decline, if desired. Dead Lifts. Power Cleans and Clean & Press. Be cautious with the power cleans and clean and press, however. Your wrists may actually get weaker. I would recommend Kettlebell Cleans and Snatches. that you, as the coach, are taking their season as seriously as they do. So, let them know that you expect them to be on time, to hustle onto the field, to listen attentively to what you are saying, and so on… no, you don’t have to be Vince Lombardi with them, but let them know that if they’re going to be on the team, there are certain rules that have to be followed. 4. Speaking of discipline… once you set a rule, have the maturity to follow up with the punishment…for example, giving them a “time out” to sit for a while out of practice or a game. Playing time is what every kid craves, and if you take it away from them, they’ll get the point in a hurry.
By Rick Wolff Last week on my radio show, I had a chance to review the Top 10 Rules for Expected Parental Behavior… and this week, I wanted to go down the same road for the Top Rules that are Expected for Youth Coaches… Here we go… 1. Here’s the most important rule of all… all the kids want to play in the game. Always remember that. Every kid on that bench – and their parent – is wondering when their kid will get into the game Coach…YOUR top priority is to make sure that happens for EVERY kid on your team. Why do Moms and Dads come to the games? Simple… to watch their kid get into the game… and while you may page 22
feel that your top obligation is to win, the truth is — your top job is to get every kid on your roster into every game AND to make sure they get quality playing time… If you think that winning the U-12 boys’ soccer trophy in your town is the ultimate goal, well, you really ought to reconsider why you’re coaching.
5. Praise by Walking Around… make it a point to chat with each kid and give them a bit of praise in every practice. Use their first name when talking with them, make eye contact, and come up with some specific part of their game to praise.
2. Follow the Golden Rule… this rule is very simple but very important! Coach, treat the kids on your team in the same manner that you would want your own kids to be treated… for any coach who wants to do the right thing, use the Golden Rule as your basic guiding principle. There is no excuse NOT to do this.
6. If frustrated with a poor performance, ONLY criticize the TEAM… never single out just one player. That will ruin the kid’s self-esteem. Never pick on a child… on the other hand, if a kid makes a crucial mistake during the game, always emphasize that it’s ALWAYS team first — individual mistakes are just part of every game.
3. Kids actually do like discipline… it lets them know
7. Never use sarcasm with young athletes… they just
don’t understand the hidden humor; instead, it makes them think you’re putting them down. In short, just don’t do it! 8. Don’t give team lectures… coaches, kids zone you OUT very quickly. Their attention span is about eight seconds. I remember one of my daughters had a lax coach who, after every game, would drone on and on for close to an hour. It was painful…and the girls hated it. Coach… after the game… give the kids a very brief peptalk, and then let them go onto their next activity. You can work on improving their skills at the next practice. 9. Be sure to smile… at a kids’ game, there’s no need to brood or be surly like a Bill Belichick… this is supposed to be about having fun. Let the kids know it’s okay to smile. Set the pace! 10. Remember, your own youth sports career is over… it’s in the books…this current season is about YOUR kid. Yeah, he or she may be your flesh-and-blood… but they are NOT you. They are themselves, and are entitled to play sports in the way that THEY want to. They are not there to fulfill your own unattained dreams in sports.

He completed 25 of 35 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns against the Razorbacks, establishing career highs in completions, yards and touchdown passes.
