Can You Legislate Good Sportsmanship? The Bizarre and Sad Case of the Massachusetts HS Super Bowl “The Sports Edge” with Rick Wolff can be listened to every Sunday morning from 8am to 9am on Sportsradio 66 WFAN.

December 11, 2011 — With every intention of trying to eliminate show-boating and taunting in HS sports, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Assn. enacted a zero-tolerance law this past fall that made it very clear that any kind of unsportsmanlike behavior would not be tolerated in any way. And the MIAA especially instructmy custom

ed its football refs and coaches to be aware. So what happens? In the Eastern Mass Division 4 “Super Bowl” game between Cathedral HS and Blue Hills Regional, the QB for Cathedral scampers for a TD on a 56-yard-run with only six minutes remaining. That TD gives him and his school the lead in the game. But en route to the game-win-

ning score, the 18-year-old QB raises his arm for 2 seconds as he realizes he’s going to cross into the end zone untouched. Was this a moment of pure instinctive joy? Or was he trying to taunt his opponents? The video is crystal clear. The kid was just happy. There was no intent to slight or embarrass his opponents. And when he reached the endzone and his teammates joined him, the celebration was very quiet and polite. No matter. The ref watching the kid raise his arm threw a flag, and the game-winning TD was nullified. On the radio show this AM, the vast majority of the callers were outraged by this (by the way, you can make your own decision by simply googling “Massachusetts Super Bowl controversy” and watch the video). But there were some callers who felt that the teams had been warned and clearly this kid violated the rule. Hence, it was a good call by the ref. To me, the intent of the HS sportsmanship rule was to make sure kids don’t point their fingers at the opposing

team, or do any of the ridiculous stunts we see every Sunday in the NFL games when a player scores a TD, makes a first down, or sacks an opposing QB. But you have to draw a common sense line between the joy of sports, because it’s great fun to celebrate a TD or a home run or a scored goal…and the unnecessary taunting that sometimes occurs. That’s the stuff we want to get rid of. And that’s where the flags should be thrown. Otherwise, you’re going to take the fun and joy out of playing HS sports. If a kid is afraid to raise his arm for two seconds en route to scoring the biggest TD of his life, well, that’s wrong. And sure enough, this youngster did just that — giving in to the exultation of the moment – and the ref threw a flag. C’mon. We all wants sportsmanship in our kids’ games… but isn’t this going a bit too far? Printed by permission from Askcoachwolff.com – the blog of sports parenting expert Rick Wolff.

Bitetto Looks Towards Challenges Ahead After the Ironmen Claim the George Jockish Holiday Wrestling Tournament Team Title

Photos by Kelly Birdseye. For more, please visit www.kbirdfoto.smugmug.com

By Gene Petraglia

Don Bosco Prep wrestling coach, Chris Bitetto (center), after winning the team title at the BCCA George Jockish Holiday Tournament.

In Northern New Jersey, that’s what happens every time our TEAM come(s) out to play. That’s why our State Farm® team is proud to support them all season long.

Chris Bitetto led his Don Bosco squad to the title of the BCCA George Jockish Holiday Wrestling Tournament at Rockland Community College held on December 29th and 30th. The 191 points garnered by Bosco gave them a two point victory over Bergen Catholic. The second year coach called it perhaps the biggest team win in career to date rivaled by only last year’s team win in the districts. Coach Bitetto is a former NJ State Champion winning the 145 title as a senior in 1999 for Hackensack HS. We went on to wrestle for the University of Northern Iowa and had an outstanding college career which included wrestling in the NCAA Division 1 National Championships. Currently in addition to his head coach duties at Don Bosco, he teaches at The Chancellor School in Pompton Plains. Adding to his busy schedule are his duties as a husband and father to his 10 month old son, Cole. At the Jockish tourney, both Sal Masttriani (152), who recently accepted a scholarship to wrestle at Virginia Tech, and Zach Chakonis (220) claimed first place trophies just weeks after completing very successful football seasons. Razohn Gross (195) turned in a second place, and Andrew Rosens-

weig (113), Tristan Hollenbaugh (138), Kevin Wilkins (285) and Billy Reardon (126) placed third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Looking ahead after the match coach Bitetto said “I would like to see how they can take it. They’re very capable of beating some of the best teams in our division and in the state. It just depends on how we wrestle, but I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people.” With their surprise win at Jockish, the surprise factor may be over. In addition to the team goal of a state tile, Coach Bitetto’s objective is to have each member of his team reach their individual goals that they set for themselves at the beginning of the season. His biggest challenge is to get the boys to buy into his philosophy by moving them to more of a college style of wrestling which his says means being “more focused on positioning, committing less mistakes and being more physical.” Even after the tournament win, the Ironmen are ranked second to Bergen Catholic by bergencountywrestling. com. The dual meet between the two teams is slated for January 27th Said Bitetto, “I can’t wait to see what we have.”

Don Bosco Prep’s freshman Zach Chakonis took home the 220-pound title.

Paramus’ freshman Mike Trovato claimed the 106-pound title.

Frosh Chakonis, Trovato Debut with BCCA Grappling Titles By Dennis Wilson Freshmen Zach Chakonis and Mike Trovato turned in gold medal performances in their first appearances in the Bergen County Coaches Association’s annual George Jockish Holiday Tournament. Competing on the campus of Rockland Community College in Suffern (NY) on December 29 and 30, Chakonis produced an amazing effort when the Don Bosco Prep ninth-grader knocked off the top-two seeds in the 220-pound weight division. His quest included a 5-2 decision over River Dell’s Lenny Smith in the championship

bout with the team title on the line as the Ironmen pulled out a two-point victory over runnerup Bergen Catholic to collect its first championship trophy since 2007. It is extremely rare for a freshman to capture a major tournament title in the upper weight classes. Paramus’ Trovato opened the championship round by defeating Bergen Catholic’s Tyler Casamenti 3-2 for the 106pound crown. His ascent to the gold medal included victories the first, second and fourth seeds as he led the Spartans to a fourth place finish in the field of 48 teams.

Northern Highland’s junior Nick Gravina recorded a 6-4 verdict over Rutherford’s Mike Paskas in the 145-pound finale. It was the third county crown for Gravina, placing the Highlander standout in position to become the sixth four-time BCCA champion in the 2012 tourney. In the following 152pound title match, Don Bosco Prep’s Sal Mastriani blanked Pascack Valley’s Dan Ressler 6-0 for his third county gold medal. Last year’s tourney Outstanding Wrestler, Johnny Sebastian, a Bergen Catholic sophomore, claimed his second county

crown with a 5-2 decision in the 160-pound weight division over Matt Dickman of the combined Glen Rock/Saddle Brook squad, a two-time NJSIAA Region II champion. North Bergen sophomore Anthony Giraldo claimed his second county title when he defeated Pascack Valley’s Dean Piterski in the finals. Dovid Greenfield, who dropped the 295-pound final 1-0 to Cotrell, became the first-ever wrestler from Torah Academy to reach a BCCA championship match. Last year, Greenfield became the first Torah student/athlete to place in a BCCA event when he finished third. American Eagle MMA & Kettlebells Athlete Profile: Macy Schwartz We asked our Star Athlete a few questions about her accomplishments, goals and aspirations. Contributed by American Eagle Mixed Martial Arts & Kettlebells What are your most memorable achievements? Throughout my four year career as a volleyball player, I have achieved numerous awards which I am extremely proud of and grateful for. Last year as a junior I received First Team All League and All County honors. As well as the Minds and Motion award, which is an academic and athletic award given to varsity athletes who also achieve high honor roll. As a senior I obtained First Team All League for the second time, First Team All County, as well as Third Team All State. As a team, we surpassed Mahwah High School’s previous record for the girl’s volleyball team and came in second in league and third in state. Wow! That’s some litany of achievements. Where do you go from here? For the next four years of my life I plan on continuing my volleyball career at Richard Stockton College in South Jersey. The team has won five of six of their last League titles and it is clear that they all have fun together. One of the first things I noticed about the team was that they are all friends and like to be with each otherwhich I feel is one of the most important things. On my team in Mahwah this past year, our companionship was a leading force in our success on the court. After my first four years I will leave my volleyball career behind but continue my education to become a Doctor in Physical Therapy at Richard Stockton. You sound like you have your path well chosen. Did you accomplish your goals this year? At the end of my season last year, after receiving first All League and All County honors, I looked at my parents and told them next year I would get first in league and first in county, as well as obtaining the position of captain on my volleyball team for senior year. As the club season went on and summer began, I never stopped working and made sure to strengthen my weaknesses so these goals would be possible the next year. By the end of preseason I was named one of three captains by the team votes and achieved my league and county goals as voted by the coaches, also surpassing my goals and being voted third team all state. It is an extremely exciting and ac-

complished feeling when you realize that all the hard work and hours spent training on and off the court have fi nally paid off. It’s great to hear of a person who sets their goals and does their best to achieve and even surpass them. What do you use for motivation? As a child, I have always been extremely competitive and never got used to the feeling of losing. Growing up in a family where ordinary isn’t an option; I found the basis for my never ending determination. The support of my family and coaches pushed me forward and I never looked back. But conventional, school sports are not what started my athleticism and love for competition. When I was about nine years old I started to attend Martial Arts Classes and American Eagle MMA. Admittedly, intimidation took over when under the instruction of intense martial artist, Phil Ross. However as the years went on, I learned mental and physical discipline as well as lifelong lessons in the Do Jang. The competitiveness of the Martial Art world and enthusiasm of my parents and trainers created the motivation which I carry with me today. It sounds like the training ignited your competitive spark. How do you balance sports, training, and school? As you can imagine, it is difficult to balance all my sports, training, and school in one day-and still get some sleep. A normal day during school season consists of school, volleyball practice or a game; every day after school, then training with Phil Ross in either kettlebells or Martial Arts; three times a week for 1-2 hours at a time, and then homework. In order to keep up with this schedule without wearing the body down, it is important to take care of the body with ice after a training session as a preventative and healthy meals in between. It also helps to set up a schedule for yourself, setting aside time which will be used for studying and family. Sounds like a great plan for success. What did you do to prepare for this season? Considering my season is seemingly never ending, with school season from before school starts during preseason and through the fall and then club from winter to spring, it is important to always keep on top of your body and health. I constantly do multiple types of

workouts consisting of running, sprinting, plyos, mixed martial arts, and kettlebells. I believe that it is extremely important to train all the parts of your body in order to improve as a whole. For example, instead of just working out while in practice, it is crucial to do workouts on the side as well. Mixed Martial Arts is a great cardio exercise as well as improving reaction skills and overall body awareness. It also obviously teaches important self defense mechanisms, fighting skills, and extreme self discipline. Kettlebells is one of my favorite types of workouts and can be described as an intense cardio and weight training exercise. The number of different kettlebell exercises is incredible and I have never had two workouts that were exactly the same. I believe kettlebells has improved my overall strength the most out of anything and allowed me to advance dramatically in my volleyball career. I began Mixed Martial Arts at around

nine years old at American Eagle Mixed Martial Arts Academy, where I still train today. Freshman year I started kettlebells there as well with trainer, Phil Ross. Throughout all my years of training and participating seriously in sports, he has pushed me the most and the hardest out of anyone. Self discipline in one of the biggest aspects when working out and training your body. Wanting to continue a workout when your body is shaking in pain or wanting to come back for a workout after last time your entire body felt like jello isn’t natural. It is a huge advantage to have someone knowledgeable there supporting and encouraging you. It takes a great deal of determination and discipline to make all of those sacrifices. Nothing worth anything comes easily. Good Luck Macy...or should we say “Dr. Schwartz”.
