President’s Foreword With the launch of this new issue of Khaleejiah, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company celebrates a myriad of unprecedented achievements and success over the past several months. We continue our journey confidently for the coming years and with our new strategy well underway, we are assured that the initiatives and decisions we are implementing will lead us to further success and sustainability. First and foremost, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan and their Excellencies the Board Members of GPIC, for their continuous and unparalleled support to the company’s operations and endeavors, especially with the recent major changes and the revamping of the company’s organizational structure in June 2018. With ongoing market volatility still affecting our industry across the globe and, the emphasis on meeting these economic challenges through strengthening our brand proposition and delivering first class products and services, reimagining the company’s organizational structure and reinforcing it with the company’s finest talent was necessary to ensure our future prosperity. Our new structure is purposed to the vision and direction of our exceptional leadership for our Kingdom of Bahrain and our drive to build the capability of our local talent. GPIC has revamped its organization to ensure true development of our young, innovative and driven Bahrainis. Furthermore and

This is indeed a key strategy for our company and encouraging the advancement of women in our country will lead to better prospects and economic sustainability. Coinciding with this new organizational structure, I would like also to express my sincerest appreciation to their Excellencies, the Board Members, the Executive Management and the entire GPIC workforce collectively contributing to this remarkable achievement. I was honored recently to be named in the Safety+Health Magazine issued by the National Safety Council in the United States, as one of the Top CEOs who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to Health and Safety principles. Moreover, without doubt, this prestigious award is the ultimate recognition for GPIC’s thirtyfive plus years of commitment to upholding and adhering to the highest standards of Safety, Health and Environmental practices. This achievement is of course down to all our employees’ dedication; the support from our Kingdom of Bahrain Leadership and the full support and vision of our Board Members, that we are able to build an unshakeable culture of putting Safety First. Tribute to Shaikh Abdulla It was a sad day for Bahrain when an extraordinary personality, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalid Al Khalifa, passed away. The renowned Islamic affairs scholar, who was widely respected and appreciated by all in Bahrain, departed during the holy month of Ramadan. He will always be remembered for his good deeds and great contributions in the fields of the judiciary, history, administration, charity and advocacy. It is not easy to speak about Shaikh Abdulla’s life in any number of words. We cannot praise his contributions enough since he had a long history in the service of Islam, the society and the nation. He was the founder of the Ministry of Justice and institutions of the judiciary and launched

the Bahrain Prize for the Holy Quran during the era of the late Amir, His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. He was also the force behind several other Quranic activities. Shaikh Abdulla was the brain behind the launch of the first Islamic monthly magazine, AlHidaya, which was published during his tenure as Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs. It is no surprise that he was one of the prominent Bahraini figures in the field of history, literature, science and culture.

During his time as mayor of Riffa, he was involved in the implementation of several projects and worked on developing municipal services, taking care of the environment, beautifying areas, paving roads and facilitating tasks. He also developed the city of Manama and its facilities. Sheikh Abdullah was also chosen to be the President of the Bahrain Red Crescent Society. GPIC shared a unique relationship with Shaikh Abdulla. He was instrumental in building bridges of strong ties between the Bahrain Red Crescent Society and the company in an ideal atmosphere of coordination that served their common goals in reaching out to the needy to ease their pain without any discrimination.

GPIC distinguished for ISO certification GPIC Managing Director H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Al-Musaiteer joined celebrations at the Company as it marked the successful completion of the ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 14001: 2015 certification. Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery presented the certificates to the Managing Director, in the presence of the Executive Management, the Chairman of the Labour Union and Company officials. Dr. Jawahery said he was proud of the Company receiving this new certification, which reaffirms its efficiency and its commitment to the high standards. The President spoke about the support of shareholders and Board Members in elevating the Company's operations and overcoming all obstacles. This, he said, contributed to the excellence GPIC is known for and its winning top awards at

the regional and international levels. Dr. Jawahery praised the opportunities provided by the Company to the work team, which contributed to enhancing their qualification and raising their competence and professional and technical capabilities. He said that GPIC is proud of all its employees who spared no effort to drive its operations. GPIC Managing Director inspects facilities GPIC Managing Director H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Mohammad Al Musaitir visited the Company’s complex to review the progress of its operations following the comprehensive periodic maintenance of its plants and facilities. GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, members of the Executive Management, chairman of the Labour Union and senior officials welcomed him. The Managing Director rev-iewed with the officials the results of the maintenance work and its completion on time. He was explained steps related to the aspects of safety, health and environmental care, in addition to the medical procedures required by such operations and told about meals and transportation of a large number of people that contributed to its success. The Managing Director toured the complex and inspected facilities. He was accompanied by Dr. Jawahery and members of the Executive Management. He visited the Security, Safety, Health and Environment Building and was briefed on its responsibilities and services as part of the Company's continuous endeavor to provide the appropriate amenities and a safe environment for the Company's employees.

The Managing Director also visited the main control room and other facilities and sections where he honoured workers who played a role in the success of operations. The Managing Director expressed pleasure at the employees’ and workers’ commitment to perform tasks assigned to them. He also expressed his admiration for the precautions taken to ensure the safety of workers flown in from outside Bahrain to take part in the operations. He spoke about the comprehensive daily reports he received from the Company's management about the details of the maintenance work, which, he said, were identical to his observations on the ground. He thanked all the employees for their commitment and professionalism, which was evident through their positive participation in the implementation of the exercise. He stressed this was not surprising to them because they were experienced and efficient and had contributed previously in similar operations. Dr. Jawahery expressed his appreciation to all the employees for the presence while the Managing Director inspected their work. He said this was the best evidence of the interest the board of directors gave to the Company and its employees.


He said this concern reflects the interest of the Managing Director to take a close look at the progress of the work and his keenness to ensure the safety of actions taken by the Company during these operations as well as to meet with the staff who took part.

On behalf of their Excellencies the Board Members of GPIC, Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan, the Chairman of GPIC has congratulated Mr. Osama Salman Hassan, an employee of GPIC on his appointment as a representative for the workers in the Civil Sector. in the Board of the Social Insurance Organization by a royal decree (No. 42 / 2018) issued by His Majesty the King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa. Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan has stated that he is very proud of Mr. Osama for earning the trust of his Majesty the King with such responsibility, saying that this appointment is a statement of the confidence that the leadership of the Kingdom has in GPIC workforce. Highlighting that this is a product of the company’s investment in the development of its workforce; and to equip with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to mold them into valuable contributing assets. GPIC workers honoured on Labour Day The Bahrain's Free Trade Union Federation organised a celebration to mark World Labour Day. The event, at the Gulf Hotel, was held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad and attended by Labor and Social Development Minister Jamil Mohammed Humaidan. The minister honored employees, including those from the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC), with prizes and certificates of appreciation. GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said since its establishment, the company has focussed on the human element and has been keen on developing their skills through training courses and workshops, both at the company’s Leadership and Learning Academy and abroad, to impart them with the knowledge and benefit from modern experiences and technologies.

Dr. Jawahery praised the employees’ team spirit, which, he said, distinguishes them, strengthens their loyalty and supports their dedication to work. He said the company management is keen to provide employees a conducive social and recreational environment by organising events to entertain workers and their families. He said the GPIC Club also organises recreational activities aimed at workers and implements summer programmes and competitions for employees’ children. Dr. Jawahery said the care is evident as company employees have excelled and achieved a lot while winning local, regional and international awards that have made the GPIC a distinguished name in the petrochemical industry. He said the employees’ personal achievements, not only in their

Dr. Jawahery spoke about the advantages enjoyed by the company’s Bahraini workers and the excellent work environment they are provided. He said the Ministry’s working group and representatives of the Company’s Environment Committee also made great efforts through programmes and events that support the young generation and encourage them to raise awareness to support the environment. Dr. Jawahery thanked all participating schools, represented by the principals, supervisors and students, and wished students success in future courses. The programme for environmental research started during the 2004-2005 academic session, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The Ministry’s Department of Student Services coordinates the programme with members of the Company’s Environment Committee. This programme is the first of its kind to support scientific research in the field of environment.

GPIC has allocated a specific budget to finance a number of scientific researches in each programme cycle. The winning research is selected by a special secretariat composed of a group of environmental experts from the Ministry of Education as well as specialists from the Company. The programme has created awareness among students and increased their knowledge of the importance of the environment. This has reflected in the quality of research topics and progressive ideas. So far, a total of 1,035 research topics have been submitted. GPIC is committed to protecting

the environment and is keen to demonstrate its commitment to international and local environmental standards. It is also keen to maintain an ecological and biological balance of natural resources. The Company has played a pioneering role in carrying out its ethical and social responsibility towards its environment and has worked diligently and sincerely on its sustainability from all risks and threats resulting from Bahrain’s industrial boom. Ms. Reem holds a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental En-gineering from Australia’s Griffith University and is currently studying for an M.Sc in Environmental and Sustainable Development. She takes care of environmental management and compliance with environmental legislation, hazardous waste management, environmental monitoring, reporting and recycling. She has also now been appointed to the Environment Committee, the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, the Responsible Care Committee and the Greenhouse Gas and Climate Change Reporting Committee. They also went to the race control section, the tower, the media centre, the maintenance facilities and the visitors’ reception centre.

The visit to one of the most important tourist destinations in Bahrain, which attracts a large number of tourists from around the world, was to educate children and to cultivate a spirit of patriotism in them from a young age.

First Aid Course for Summer Camp Organisers The Social Activities Committee of GPIC conducted a First Aid Course for organisers of the Company’s annual Summer Camp. The course focussed on the basics of First Aid and Rescue; CPR training for adults and children as well as steps on how to deal with fractures, burns, wounds, bleeding and heat stress. It also included training on how to treat toxin effects and allergies according to the

standards of the US National Safety Council. The course was supervised by GPIC’s Medical Clinic Nurse Mr. Nadeem Kamal. In his comments, GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery thanked the Chairman and members of the Social Activities Committee and said the course emphasized the safety of the staff and participants in various activities during the camp. He said the course would contribute to developing organisers’ skills.

The Camp has been an annual feature since 2005 and includes several activities for employees’ children between six and fourteen years old. GPIC organizes Ramadan Football Tournament GPIC organized a Ramadan Football Tournament at its Club, as part of its approach to promoting a one family spirit. Eight teams representing the Company’s different Departments, took part. Hundreds of employees and their families took part in the event to cheer on their teams and encourage them.

In a statement, Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said such competitions during the holy month are an occasion for family gatherings and bring together members of society.
