GOALKEEPERS IN BUILD-UP PLAY
During a game, what percentage of their time in possession of the ball do goalkeepers have the ball at their feet? On average, a goalkeeper will have the ball a staggering 80% of the time at their feet and only 20% in their hands. The modern goalkeeper must be as good with the ball at their feet as they are with the ball in their hands. MANUEL NEUER

More and more teams are adopting a possession-based attacking style of play. The goal keeper is the first line of attack for any team. All players within the team should be confident that thier goalkeeper has the ability to retain possession of the ball when used in building attacking moves.
Goalkeepers MUST be involved in all team technical training sessions. This gives goalkeepers the chance to work on the technical attributes that are a high demand on their position in today’s game (first touch, passing). Goalkeepers should have the ability to distribute the ball over a range of distance. A prime example of this is Manuel Neuer, he is confident receiving the ball in build up play and passing short or long. The expectation is that all GPS players have the ability to play the ball using their feet with consistent accuracy.
