PANORAMA OF BRA ZILIAN ARCHITECTURE
Escola da Cidade is a School of Architecture and Urban Planning legally constituted and accredited by the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil through a specific resolution. It is also a center for studies of the built environment, the different forms of space occupation and the relations between architecture, historical time, territory and nature. In order to educate professionals who can think and act onto the urban environment, Escola da Cidade has gathered a group of professors capable of training future architects to draw up critical thinking and create technical and aesthetic solutions, deal with knowledge that structures the constructive thinking, recognize the extent of public space, encourage structured, continuous and creative interpretive processes. The School is maintained by Associação Escola da Cidade, established in 1996, a nonprofit organization that brings together professors and professionals from diverse areas. Its main objectives are: to contribute to the improvement of living conditions; disseminate the produced knowledge in a language that is accessible to the various segments of society, educate citizens to criticize and transform reality. On the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Escola da Cidade (São Paulo, SP) have organized the exhibit Panorama of Contemporary Brazilian Architecture. The intention is to make an itinerant exhibit that can travel the capitals of Europe and America. The curatorship of this event is under the responsibility of Ciro Pirondi, Ruben Otero and Alvaro Puntoni. The exhibit will present a Panorama of the Brazilian Architectural Production between 2001 and 2014. For this purpose the exhibit - consisting of 71 panels through the establishment of a framework of regional curators, the intention is to cover the current architectural production in our country to the fullest possible extent. Ciro Pirondi, Dean of Escola da Cidade

THE DESIGN OF BRAZIL AND THE BRAZILIAN ARCHITECTURES
“My father was paulista, My grandfather, pernambucano, My great-grandfather, mineiro, My great-great-grandfather, baiano . I’ve been on the road for many years I’m a Brazilian artist.”
It was also necessary, in order to create a contemporary architecture in accordance with the country that was rebuilding its identity, to regain critically some neglected historical commitments and understand that the modern project always antagonized the delay of social relations insistently reproduced by our elites.
(Chico Buarque de Hollanda)
The production of the last decades of the XX century as a result of this critical review emptied the debate on the issues of architectural form and replaced the need to reach, in a new way, the solution of new and old problems. Therefore, the Brazilian architecture presented in this exhibition is at the same time, plural and unique. Plural - not regional - due to the variety of adopted solutions, the numerous and various appropriations for different programs. Unique due to the quality of these drawings that design Brazil.
The Design of Brazil reveals a unique country in the diversity of its huge territory and its program covers the respect for and defense of fundamental human rights: education, public health, housing, sustainable technical and economic development, respect for the environment, employment, security, labor, social justice, democracy.
Rosa Camargo Artigas
The desires of this Brazil that is being designed are concretized in spaces - architectures – of which a small sample is presented here. The exhibit covers in the works presented, the contribution of our masters, their intentions that have resulted in works constructed even in a country of faltering modernity. These pioneers and the generations that succeeded them consolidated the modern project through the creation of schools of architecture, of associations and publications on Brazilian Architecture, of institutes for the defense of the historical and cultural patrimony. The architecture produced between 1940 and 1964, conquered international recognition with its works and was center of debate about the production of cities, mainly from the impact represented by the construction of Brasilia. In the years between 1964 and 1984 the military dictatorship provoked the discontinuation of the Brazilian plans, and only in the late 1980s, the debate about the destiny of the country was restarted. For architects, it was necessary to conduct a thorough review of the international references and of the more superficial and conservative critique to the modwern movement that prevailed in the 1980s. 11

Considering the diversity of production, the regional differences, the “countries within the country,” the numerous schools of architecture, it might be an arduous task to define a Brazilian School. Perhaps there are several schools, not only one.
Only 15 years after the founding of the schools of architecture in Sao Paulo while they were discussing and applying their new and promising educational programs, the military dictatorship (1964) settled in the country and began a process of cultural destruction without precedent. For twenty years, “the architects have kept vigil.” While weakened it was difficult to take a stand, it was easier to assimilate external inflows.
But it is interesting to notice that Modern Brazilian Architecture, the one founded in the forties from the efforts of a remarkable generation of architects such as Lucio Costa, Affonso Eduardo Reidy, Oscar Niemeyer, MMM Roberto, Sergio Bernardes in Rio de Janeiro, fostered mainly by a governmental action, and then, the one established in São Paulo, more related to private actions and foundation of Schools with fundamental architects as Vilanova Artigas, Abelardo de Souza, Eduardo Corona, Rino Levi, among others, is the most impressive and vigorous moment of our architecture. Artigas represents a reference for his ideological posture and its unfoldings in education, besides the quality of his work.
At this time of rebuilding the country, linked to the democratization process consolidated in recent years, we have observed the reinvigoration of Brazilian Architecture as an expression of the strengthening of our culture. Nowadays, we can wave back into the international architecture scenery with more elaborate phrases, more precise buildings. The new generations formed in part by the architects of São Paulo, professors, their students, students of the students, have not renounced built intelligence.
From the first, the Carioca School, very little remained except for a patrimony of representative and significant but unique works. Apparently they did not find resonance and depth in a process of training and education as occurred in São Paulo, in the Paulista School, twice School, then.
This exhibit seeks to reveal some of this. Alvaro Puntoni and Ciro Pirondi
The link of the courses in Sao Paulo with Civil Engineering - both come from the Polytechnic Course - marks its main characteristic which is the valorization and, often, the sublimation of the constructive reasoning. An architecture that is explained by its spaces and structural solutions, and once again assumes the role of School. In São Paulo follows a second generation as important as the pioneer one: Carlos Milan, Joaquim Guedes, Eduardo de Almeida, Abraham Sanovicz, Sergio Ferro, Fabio Penteado, and especially Paulo Mendes da Rocha. As a graduate from Mackenzie (1954), he wins the competition for the Gymnasium of Paulistano Club in 1957 and is immediately invited by Artigas, who had designed Baeta house in the same period, to be an assistant at FAUUSP. One can not fail to mention also the contributions of architects who choose to settle in the city as Lina Bo. This fruitful coexistence can be said to have formed other architects and other architectures.
