TRAINING COURSES • JOLLY PHONICS 1: A synthetic phonics approach on how to teach to read and write. ABSTRACT: Jolly Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the 42 letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words. Children learn to identify the letter sounds in words, then blend them and spell them. Who should attend: Primary English teachers for the lower forms. Ideal for the teacher who wants to make sure they are getting the most out of the programme or those new to Jolly Phonics. Course outline: This training course provides background advice for teachers. It explains the principles behind Jolly Phonics so that your understanding of the teaching, and your ability to help a child, is much greater. You will be taken through sample lessons and demonstrations of real classroom scenarios. It is a step by step course on how to apply the programme and get the children read fluently, clearly and with good pronunciation. Course content: This introductory course takes you step-by-step through a phonics lesson and the 5 key skills of the programme: learning the letter sounds, letter formation, blending, identifying the sounds in words and tricky words. Practical ideas and activities are shown that can be used in class. Strategies for helping the struggling child will also be discussed. A first year timetable is also covered, showing the pace at which Jolly Phonics should be taught.


• JOLLY PHONICS 2: DEVELOPING JOLLY PHONICS and JOLLY GRAMMAR. Who should attend: This course is for the teacher who has been using Jolly Phonics successfully for a while or has attended the Jolly Phonics 1. Ideal for Year 1, 2 and 3 teachers. Course outline: The Developing Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar course will take teachers through the principles of Jolly Grammar and how to follow on from Jolly Phonics. You will be taken through sample lessons and demonstrations of real classroom scenarios. It is a step by step course on how to apply the programme and make the best of it. Course Content: Learn about the grammar programme and how it follows on from Jolly Phonics. You will be shown how you can continue to develop children’s phonic knowledge enabling them to improve their vocabulary and comprehension into Year 2. This course introduces key elements of grammar, punctuation, spelling rules, (short vowels) as well as revision and extension of phonics. You will be taken through lesson guides, structure and pace of teaching. Ideas and strategies for teaching both grammar and spelling in a fun and enjoyable way are explored. Please note: In this course there will not be any introduction to Jolly Phonics. BIODATA: Grace Vilar is a graduated English teacher who has 30 years of classroom experience. She is currently Head of Primary at Colegio San Antonio, a bilingual school in San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires. She works part time as an Educational and Literacy Consultant offering advice and training to schools and teachers. She is a Jolly Phonics professional trainer for Latin America, providing training in synthetic phonics in English and Spanish. She has recently come from her second trip to England where she was invited by the Inspector of British Schools and Chairman of the English Speaking Union in Oxford, Geoffrey Goodall. She spent a month in Oxford where she visited several schools and worked at Rye St Antony School, where she observed lessons and helped deliver the curriculum. There, she gained experience in the best and last teaching practices and has learnt more about the latest teaching of reading and writing through synthetic phonics. “I am keen to share my success by training others, offering advice and explaining my tried and tested strategies.
