TRAINING COURSES • JOLLY PHONICS 1: A synthetic phonics approach on how to teach to read and write. ABSTRACT: Jolly Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the 42 letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words. Children learn to identify the letter sounds in words, then blend them and spell them. Who should attend: Primary English teachers for the lower forms. Ideal for the teacher who wants to make sure they are getting the most out of the programme or those new to Jolly Phonics. Course outline: This training course provides background advice for teachers. It explains the principles behind Jolly Phonics so that your understanding of the teaching, and your ability to help a child, is much greater. You will be taken through sample lessons and demonstrations of real classroom scenarios. It is a step by step course on how to apply the programme and get the children read fluently, clearly and with good pronunciation. Course content: This introductory course takes you step-by-step through a phonics lesson and the 5 key skills of the programme: learning the letter sounds, letter formation, blending, identifying the sounds in words and tricky words. Practical ideas and activities are shown that can be used in class. Strategies for helping the struggling child will also be discussed. A first year timetable is also covered, showing the pace at which Jolly Phonics should be taught.
