PROCESS BOOK 3D Typeface ArtGR 575 Project 4

WEI-EN YANG

1 / Concept + Development Based on the geometric typeface I created in laser cutting project, I decided to design another style of geometry typeface.

Sketchs in first project for laser cut:

A mystical land whe re 99% of all human pr oductivity , motivation, and achievement is stor

The sketch of typeface will also based on a hexagonal on 2D graphic. When it comes to 3D, the typeface will be designed in a cube which let me be able to actually made it by hand craft.

While making research, I found a design was really alike with my idea. But the different is it is not based in a cube and some of the form can only work on 2D graphic.

How those sticks connect can’t build in real hand craft.

ed.

2 / Hand drawing sketches I statrt my sketch with square cube. When it was draw on 2D graphic, the shape looks like hexagonal.

2 / Hand drawing sketches: A-J

2 / Hand drawing sketches: K-S

2 / Hand drawing sketches: T-Z

3 / Computer sketches1 Since the square cube wasn’t work very well, I turned it into rectangle cube. In this case, it can have more space to create letters. There are 3x3x5 small cubes inside this big rectangle cube which I can design them into letters.

3 / Computer sketches2 I used three similiar but different colors to painted on different angle of surfaces. So that the 3D style can be shown. The color was purple red in the beginning. But after I tested painting different colors on the real 3D types, it turn out that red works better.

My final graphic typeface design:

4 / Hand craft: calculate > cut > stick

I used 0.5x0.5 thick basswood stick to made the letters. So I need to meansure how long and how much the wood stick should be for each letter. Above are the cutting lines I preview in illustrator and the calculating note for wood stick cutting. Below are the process I gone through, from cutting to stick them into typefaces.

4 / Hand craft: plaster > sand > paint To make the 3D letters more smooth and flat, I used Patching Plaster to covered them. After the Plaster dry, used sand paper to sand the layers. After making the plaster layer, painted them with red acrylic painting. I painted about three layers of acrylic painting for each. Because it some how didn’t looks good with only one layer.

5 / Video making: photos (without modified)/ Typefaces I modified most photos in premiere, so the color of photos below might not looks well. There are photos witch looks really good but can’t fit in the video.

5 / Video making: photos (without modified)/ People

There are several peoples were willing to help me took photos with my 3D types. But due to the length of my video, some of them didn’t show up in video.
