Role: Concept art of logo & symbols design/ card design/ charactors design
Artist Statement Creating illustration is really a fun thing to me. I’m much use to draw human figure instaed of animal and scenery. There are mostly hard line around the edge of character in my illustration. Becasue I’m not really good at shadow and texture drawing, I mostly combine actuall tecture into the drawing enable to make it looks more realistic. I work on logo, symbols, cards, and characters design for the crad game: Crown Wars. Since most of the illustration for card games looks 3D and realistic, I challenge myself to design more 3D look symbols and characters. Although there’re only few of the characters be done(being colored), it is still a good experience to color off characters which is something I seldon do but love to work on.
Inspiration The story and background for Crown Wars was created by the computer science students, I doesn’t involved much with the concept developing. But I did bring up the different categories for monsters. It seems like they want to have a wild rang of all kinds of monsters, not just fantasy monster. But I don’t think they think enough with the whole concept which sometimes make me confuse while creating the charactors. So for this semester, I stick with the idea of fantasy style to create the overall art for Crown Wars. It is possible to change in next semester. Working on the work for card game is a new field to me, so I made research for it. Most card game go for a more three dimansion art style which is something I’m need to learn about. (Those are the card examples I found on web)
Concept Art: Logo A dark magic crown is not onlt the logo for Crown Wars, but also a important part of the story line. This crown have the most powerful magic which is the reason people start the war.

Concept Art: Logo
Sketches
Logo for Crown Wars go straight for the image of a crown. The crown use black and purpule as its main colors to create a dark magic feeling. I used color gradation in Ai to make it looks 3D and than put into Ps to create texture to make it relistic. The different typeface designs for logo. Using Ps function to transform types into 3D. The one we choose have curved shape and sharp points. It present a luxury look which fit the color of black and purpule very well.
Concept Art: Symbols
Final Pieces
There are ten symbols being used on the cards of Crwn Wars. The top six are symbols for different terrains: water, fire, forest, mountain, light, and dark. The down four are used to present the numbers for mana, heath, attack, and time.

Concept Art: Symbols I started the terrain symbols form few differnt sketches. The design for final pieces was actually already decided in the beginning. Terrain symbols started from six simple colors which present each terrain most: blue, red, green, brown, yellow, and black. And I also chose some other color which match with the gradation style. Following the same step on youtube of how to make 3D ball and than add differnt shapes to cover the balls make them looks more unique. The last step was always adding texture to the illustration to make it more relistic. The four other symbols didn’t have much pro cess as terrains. They are mostly done pretty quickly.

Concept Art: Monsters There are only two monsters was completed as final illustration: Yeti and Centaur. I’m more satisfy with the Yeti. The Centaur is actually not complet yet, he still have clothes I want he to wear. Below will list down the very long name list for monsters we decide in the beginning. Most of them are fantasy creatures. The names with blue color are those which I had draw sketches: >Mermaid >Medusa >Nymph >Fairy >Sphinx >Satyr >Centaur >Giant >Orcs >Unicorn >Pegasus >Griffin >Phoenix >Dragon >Cerberus >Hydra >Krampus >Werewolf >Ent >Swamp Monster >Slime >Leprechaun >Elf >Goblin >Troll
>Ogre >Cannibal >Jinn >Yeti >Zombie >Frankenstein >The Bride of Frankenstein >Ghost >Witch >Jack O’Lantern >Vampire >Mummy >Hollow Man >Skeleton >Clown >Chinese Dragon >Samurai >Tengu Jiangshi

Concept Art: Monsters
This is a large and furry yeti. He looks peaceful and lazy most of the time. But he can also become very ferocious when meeting enemy. He hate human but like their can food. In this illustration, he is drinking a hot can soup.

Concept Art: Monsters
This is a young and energetic centaur. He is suppose to wear clothes but because of the less of time I didn’t draw it. In fact, it is actually make sence for centaur not wearing clothes. In this illustration, he is waving a flag and looks cheerful. He was actually holding a kind of big sowrd in the beginning sketch.

Concept Art: Terrain There’s only one terrain card was completed for final presentaion use: Snow Mountain, which connect to the Yeti. I’m not really good at drawing terrain, so I mix up my illustration with real snow mountain photo to make it looks better.

Concept Art: Cards There are three card formats: Monster Card, Terrain Card, and Sepll Card.

Concept Art: Cards There were several sketches I draw for Crown Wars card. The one we end up to choose have geometric and sharp shape. I redesign it into a the shape which have more curve and elegant style. Using the dark stone texture to create a style which match our crown better.

Future Development For next semester, while diving into 3D modeling, we should also work harder for the monster development since there’s so many of them. The monster graphic is really important for card game although it doesn’t effect the game play to much. Maybe monster drawing and modeling should be all together create in the same time. There is one thing also don’t really effect game too much but I think is important. The concept setting for monsters categoriy is not clear enough. We mostly work on fantasy monster in this semeter and wanted to have some monsters from other genre. But I think it’ll be unclear for the naming part while creating a wide range of monsters. Our team gonna discuss about more of this issue in next semester.
