A Risk Taking Trip
By Hailey Magness
I dedicate this Memoir to my BFF Emily because she is a really awesome friend/editor.
As we went over the incline, my body was screaming with excitement on the inside. But that changed. As soon as we got over the incline, the fast intensity allowed terror inside me to surge through my body until it came out my mouth. As we went around the twisty turns, up the steep inclines, and down the horrifying slopes, I felt it all of a sudden slow down. On one very special day, my mom, sister, Jordan, and I all were getting prepared to go to one of the most fantastic place, known as Six Flags America, that would change my life forever. After we had gotten ready we walked out of the beautiful hotel and waited for the car to arrive. Once the small greyish car arrived, we got in and my mom began to drive. The first few minutes of the ride were fine but after a while I got bored and began asking my mom, “Are we there yet?” and she simply replied, “No.” Then a few minutes later I asked her in a whiney voice, “How much longer til we get there?” and she sternly replied, “I do not know.” Then minute after minute I asked her the same question until she was fed up and yelled, “NO I DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH LONGER TILL WE GET THERE!” After she hollered that, I could not bear another moment in that car. When we FINALLY made it to Six Flags America I was so relieved that I did not have to sit another mere moment in the car. Once we got settled inside the park, my mom said, “Your sister wants to go on this ride in Coyote Range.” After my mom said that we began to search for Coyote Range. While looking for Coyote Range, my sister and I saw this ride that looked like a miniature version of Splash Mountain but without the characters. Seeing this, I heard someone say, “Can we go on that one?” After a moment I realized it was my sister. It sounded like she really wanted to go on the ride because she sounded so excited, but fortunately my mom told her in a somewhat stern voice, “We can’t go on that one right now but maybe later.” After my mom mentioned that, we continued to look for Coyote Range. Once we found the place, I looked around and saw what looked like western themed houses, decorations and rides. Once I finished looking around, my sister, mom, and I began to look for the ride. When we finally found the ride, I saw what looked like bulls with different colors on a round wooden board. Seeing this I hoped that we would get in line and go on the ride but my sister changed her mind because the ride involved a lot of spinning and movement. So, we began to look for another ride.
While looking for another ride, I exclaimed, “Bumper Cars!” and began to show my sister and my mom where it is. Once we found it, my sister and I got in line and waited for our turn. Once it was our turn, my sister and I began to look for a separate cars so we could ride. While I was looking I got in a car that was blue and white. After seeing it, I got in and waited. While waiting, I felt nervous and could not wait another single minute. Soon Jordan found the one she wanted and the ride finallt began. Once the ride started I began to go around sometimes bumping into people and sometimes having people bump into me. While going around and getting bumped into, I felt jerked around and yet felt kind of happy to bump into others. Also I felt joyful for just driving around. After the ride was over, my sister and I got out of the cars and left. After we left, we found mom and went to look for the next ride. While looking for the next ride, my sister, mom and I agreed that we are going on the miniature version of Splash Mountain. After we agreed, we began to head towards the ride. Once we got to the ride, we got in the extremely short line and waited. When it was our turn, we got in what looked like a log with leather seats and straps that come down when the ride starts. My mom and sister went towards the back while I forced myself to be brave and sit in the front with no one else. Once everybody who was going on the ride was secured, the ride began. The first obstacle we got past was the incline, then around the turn and finally we went down extremely fast and ended up making a HUMONGOUS splash. While going down I screamed “AHHH!!!” This part of the ride reminds me of a time when I was little and my dad and I went on a ride in Disney World called Dinosaur. As we got on the ride, I saw what I thought were real dinosaurs. After seeing this, the ride took us into a pitch black cave where I panicked. After that, there were some lights and the ride ended. When the miniature version of Splash Mountain ride was over, my sister, mom and I all came out soaking wet. After we were done with that ride we went on some kiddy rides. After we got done on the Carousel, I said to mom, “Can we go on that kiddy roller coaster over there?” I pointed towards a blue, metal track with carts connected to it. After I asked this, she replied, “Yes.” And in saying that, we were not prepared for the most jerky kiddy ride the world has never known. When we got there, we got in line and waited FOREVER. While waiting in line, I said things to my mom like, “How much longer is it going to be?” or
“This is going to be EPIC!” When it was finally our turn, we all got in the tiny carts and waited. While waiting in the cramped cars, I thought wow, these carts are tiny and not how I thought it would be but this is going to be awesome. After waiting, the ride finally began. When the ride started, I was thinking, OMG! This is going to be AWESOME! But as we got over the incline and down the slope, I felt the speed, intensity, and all the jerky areas allow the terror inside me to come out and make me scream “ahhh!!!” until the ride came to a total stop. That moment reminds me of a ride once again in Disney World and also about dinosaurs. Now that ride was really jerky because for one you move all around and the cart that you sit on moves too. When the jerky kiddy ride was FINALLY over, we got off and left the ride. When my sister, mom and I left the jerky kiddy ride behind, I gathered up enough strength to ask my mom something. When I had enough strength, I asked my mom in a somewhat serious tone, “Can we go on a REAL roller coaster?” Asking this I thought she would say yes, but you have to go on it by yourself but fortunately she simply replied, “Yes we can go on a real roller coaster and I will come on with you and Jordan you can wait for us.” After she said that, I chose a roller coaster called ROAR! After searching for the roller coaster using the map we had, we set off to find ROAR! When we finally found ROAR, I saw what looked like a real rollercoaster that involved a lot of ups, downs, and turns and it was made from wood. To me the roller coaster looked like it from the 1960’s and I thought if we go on that, i’m sure it will collapse. Seeing and thinking this, I still had enough courage to go on. After thinking this, we got in line and waited. When it was our turn, I managed to drag my mom to the second car and wait for the ride to begin. While waiting, I was so excited that I was going on my first REAL roller coaster. After waiting a few minutes, the ride began. While going up the incline, I excitedly exclaimed something like “OMG! This is going to be totally awesome!” As we went over the incline, my body was screaming with excitement on the inside. But that changed. As soon as we got over the incline, the fast intensity allowed terror inside me to surge through my body until it came out my mouth. As we went around the twisty turns, up the steep inclines, and down the horrifying slopes, I felt the ride all of a sudden slow down until it came to a sudden halt. Once the ride was over, my mom and I got off and headed towards my sister.
After we found her I looked towards a ride that looked like a ship without the mast that swung people back and forth. Seeing this, I thought OMG! That looks like an awesome ride to go on. Thinking this I asked my mom, “CAN I go on that one?” She replied, “Yes but you have to go on it alone.” After she said that, all of us began to head towards it. Once we were all there, I got in line while my mom and sister sat on a bench. While I was in line, I waited for my turn. While waiting, I was so eager to get on the ride and get swung back and forth. Once it was my turn, I got in a seat on the ship and waited for the ride to start. Once the ride began, the ship began to sway back and forth making my mind scream some short, “AHH!!!!” and my mouth scream, “WEE!!!” and sometimes “AHH!!!” Once the ride was over, I got off and walked towards my mom. Once I was near her, she told me “It’s time for lunch.” After she said that, we began to look for a restruant. While looking for a restruant, I saw a ride that I wanted to go on. The ride had seats that were made of metal and were chained to a pole way above the seat and the ride looked like it had some pretty designs that were white, yellow, and I think pink. Seeing the ride, I asked my mom “Can I go on that ride?” I pointed my figure towards a ride that took you up a few feet or so and spun you around. After I pointed to the ride I wanted to go on, my mom replied, “Okay but we are going to lunch and will wait for you.” After she said that, I got in line and waited for my turn. While waiting, I thought but what if it breaks? then what? will it hold my weight? While thinking these, I almost wanted to turn around and leave but I didn’t because I pushed myself to go on it. Once it was my turn, I got in a metal seat with what I think is was a leather bottom, that was hanging on the outer reaches of the ride. After waiting a couple of minutes, the ride finally began. At first terror surged through me making me scream “Ahhhhh!!!” but soon I enjoyed it because I felt like I was flying through the air like a bird that went up and down. Also, I felt my hair fly back like I was soaring through the sky. When the ride was over, I got out of the seat and left the ride. Towards the end of the day, my sister and I went on this ride many more times.
After the fun day ended, I learned that you should always take risks even though you may be terrified while on the ride or going on it. When I make another trip to a place that has rides, I will be a risk taker even if I have to go on it alone.
