dREam managed to once again catch hold of Siti Shahera, an alumnus of the School of Applied Science, four years after last featuring her. This time round, Siti Shahera has been awarded the PhD Scholarship in Regenerative Medicine from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star)! Congratulations Siti Shahera!

I realised that it has been four years since we last featured you in dREam back in 2009! :) Tell us, how have you been since we last met? Back in 2009, I was at the prime of my youth - immersing myself in Melbourne’s hip culture. I quit my job as a cancer researcher and went back to conduct stem cell research for Mesoblast Ltd. After which, I received a PhD scholarship from Monash which I had to reject due to family responsibilities. Now that I am back in Singapore, things are very different. There was a reverse culture shock in the beginning as I readjusted my expectations and life to live under my parent’s roof. During that period of time, I was facilitating at RP till I got a job at the Institute of Medical Biology. My supervisor is very supportive and encouraged me to apply for the A*STAR Graduate Scholarship.

Could you share with us your experiences while you were pursuing your undergrad study in Monash University? It was important to quickly adapt to the new style of learning especially after going through three years of PBL. I had to attend lectures, write essays and burn the midnight oil to study for exams. There was no such thing as an open-book understanding test! Honours was different because I had to be independent and was highly motivated to get good enough results for my thesis. It was highly rewarding when I received the International Honours Scholarship from the Faculty of Medicine and won a travel award to present my work. I am now a second author of a paper recently published in Cell Transplantation based on my honours work. The paper made it to the Top 20 downloaded manuscripts from January to June 2013!

Congratulations once again on receiving the PhD Scholarship from A*Star! Are you looking forward to embark on this new and exciting journey? Thank you very much! I am all set and ready to go. On top of the usual research work and PhD qualifying exam, I also have to complete the coursework and maintain a CPA of 3.8 every semester. I also need to clock 40 hours of undergraduate teaching which is great because it is a way to inspire students to achieve their goals - something which I enjoyed doing as a facilitator in RP. The A*STAR Graduate Scholarship not only supports my school fees and living expenses but also allows me to present my work at conferences overseas every year. I am extremely grateful for the generous funding. My professional goal is not only to make a mark in science but also to invigorate the area of regenerative medicine in Singapore.

How has RP shaped you to who you are today? Thanks to the International Programme in Biomedical Sciences at RP, I am able to get the overseas experience that is invaluable. Most importantly, I actually use problem-based learning every day as a researcher. Doing a project is basically a very big real life problem and it’s crucial to break it down. So I constantly ask myself: What do I know? What do I not know? What do I need to find out? These three important questions allow my thought processes to flow in a systematic manner and further expand as I delve deeper into the subject.

Any last words to future RP graduates? My suggestion is to get some work experience or internship in an area of your interest before going to university. Don’t feel pressurised to join in the rat race. You have to not only be book smart but also street smart. Get to know more people in your industry and network! Employers trust the reference of someone they know rather than an electronic job application and your degree scroll.

Scaling the finance corporate ladder

Article by Ju School of Ho pe Ng, Staff Gradua spitality, te Chapter ilitators, . Joey Tan Anson and his fac . Lee Wei, and Ms s. Cindy Chow, Mr Mr ht: rig to t lef m fro

Anson Lim, an alumnus from the School of Hospitality, was diagnosed with a serious medical condition in Year 2. However, he refused to allow that setback affect him; instead, he became even more determined to complete his studies and achieve good grades. His internship at Citibank Singapore was a stepping stone for him to clinch his current role as Specialist Officer in Citibank’s Client Contact Centre. Anson is currently pursuing a double major degree in HR and Management on top of working full time. dREam catches up with him to glean some insights on his climb up the corporate ladder in the finance sector. Alright Anson, let’s start by recalling what was your first day in RP like. It was a great first day. I liked my class and the facilitators were helpful. At first, I thought PBL was really tough for certain modules but what I like about it was the sharing of different views and ideas, and putting them together. It’s the learning approach that I particularly like most!

I understand that you are currently working at Citibank Singapore which was the company that you were attached to during internship. How did you get into this position? At first, it was almost impossible for me to stay on as they had no headcount. But an opportunity came by at the right time so I grabbed it. Indeed I was really lucky and fortunate! I am very thankful to my director who was previously the Head of Resourcing, Talent Management, HR Risk & Control and Learning & Development. She is now our country’s Chief HR Officer for Citibank Singapore. I’m also grateful that my direct manager saw my potential during internship and proposed for me to join the team.

How has your learning in RP helped you in your current job? Throughout the three years, I’ve learned to build relationships with my friends, teammates and facilitators. The daily problemsolving and analytical skills that were practiced in school really helped me in my current job. Our environment shapes us to be who we are and I believe that I will be able to learn and take away something that makes me who I am today everywhere I go. Thank you for your time Anson, we hope that you will do us proud in your new role and stay in touch!

A Movie Screening

Get-Together Article by Diana Gloria, Alumna of 2013

To end the hectic week, a group of alumni from different batches met on 18 October to generate enough energy to power for our monthly Republic Polytechnic Alumni Club (RPAC) meeting. The meeting began with the regular updates. To spice up our Friday night, we had a movie date to watch Monsters University in our very cozy Students Service Centre in RP. Even though Monsters University is an animated comedy film, it proved to be a good reflection for us all. Mike, the tiny green monster who dreamt to be a “Scarer”, went through lots of challenges and discouragements from his other competitors. However, with his positive and never-giveup attitude, he lifted the team’s spirit and finally proved his capability to “produce the unexpected” as his head mistress put it. This brings to mind that whether as a student or a working adult, we are often faced with challenges and discouragements in our lives. Believing in yourself and having faith in your abilities are positive attitudes that we should have. Be like Mike who was never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream. The meeting ended with a yummy KFC meal and a great time catching up with one another. It’s always nice to feel right at home in RP.

“It was nice to have a small reunion for all of the alumni from the past batches to come together and play football as a team once again. We still have that bond we once created, and the spirit and passion we once shared. It would be nice if there were friendly matches organised for both past and present teams more frequently. I hope that we can get to know one another better in that way. “ “The game was heartwarming. Even though we have not played together for a while, we still had the touches. On 4 October, the past and the present members of RP’s women’s soccer team came together to play the sport they loved and are still very much in love with. It was heartwarming to see the RP alumni back in the RP sports complex, fondly known as the Home of the Republic, reunited to play a game with the current RP team. It might have been some time for most of the alumni players since they last hit the field but they certainly had not lost touch with the game. Clearly enjoying themselves and relishing the chance to play team football once again, they gave the current team a really tough fight. The match ended with the score of 2-2. True to the spirit of respect and sportsmanship, Nur Ainina, Captain of 2010, went on to speak on behalf of the alumni to wish the current team the best for their upcoming POL-ITE Games competition.

“It was nice to play against the seniors. I realised how well they played and it served as a motivation for me. I am looking forward to more friendly matches with the alumni team. “

Eating Right During Festive Seasons 1. Eating right generally, should be a life long decision that will eventually be ingrained into a habit.

Coming

“home” to RP

Article by Aaron Wee, Year 1 Diploma in Mass Communication www.republicanpost.sg

Like many school reunions, the returning students were awkward and shy, unsure how the session planned for them would pan out. But once they met familiar faces, smiles broke out, hugs were exchanged and the catching up began in earnest. On 28 September, the Diploma in Mass Communication (DMC) cohort held its first ever tea session in the VIP reception room at The Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC). The idea was conceived to get graduates of the diploma to come together and discuss the idea of setting up an Alumni Committee.

With the correct ingrained eating habit, it will not be harmful to indulge gastronomically during the occasional festive seasons so as to fully partake in the celebrations! 2. However, if we are still concerned regarding the possible 2 to 3kg weight gain that sometimes happen during a period of festive feasting, we must be mindful of the excessive calories we eat.

Below are a few simple tips:

> Eat smaller portions.

• Festive foods are frequently oily or sweet. Such food will contain proportionately more calories. • A smaller intake will help reduce excessive calorie input. • It may be useful to drink up to 500ml of water half an hour before the meal to reduce appetite.

Said Ms Chan Yen Ting, DMC academic staff and a key member of the team: “A DMC alumni committee is [an] important … platform for our graduates to connect with the DMC family. We want to use this opportunity to expand the DMC network so that we can help each other grow stronger. Not only will our graduates be able to contribute to their alma mater, they can also be a valuable peer coach to their juniors.’’

> Skip the main meals during lunch or dinner

Indeed, being a coach and giving back were the main thrusts of the opening remarks given by Programme Chair Ms Gan Koh and Director of the Centre for Communication and Enterprise (CEC) Mr Warren Wang. Both talked about the changes CEC and the diploma programme had gone through. Ms Koh highlighted two significant ones – the renaming of the diploma (which was previously called Diploma in Information Design or DCID) and the creation of a student newsroom called the Media Lab. As she proudly showed the alumni the student work that came out of the Lab, in the form of the campus newspaper Republican Post, its online version republicanpost.sg and broadcast channel RepTV, there were oohs and aahs among the audience, with many jokingly saying it was “not fair” how current students got to experience so many wonderful things.

> Reduce or avoid alcohol and sweet drinks as they contain a lot of calories.

As soon as the formalities were done with, the graduates were grouped to discuss and brainstorm two main topics: how their diploma helped them in university or at work, and the feasibility of creating a committee made of up exstudents who would give back by mentoring current students. Angeline Wong, 20, from the 2010 batch and who currently works for a design firm said that she was glad for the PBL (Problem Based Learning) system. “In the industry, we face new problems every day. We are required to think on our feet, be proactive, and to speak up for ourselves when we disagree with something. In that aspect, RP has done extremely well in preparing us,” she said to agreement all around.

• if there are gatherings with feasting planned after those regular timings. • This will allow less overall calories taken during that day.

• Be mindful of their intake as they often contribute to excessive calories during festive seasons. • Drink water in between the occasional sweet drinks if thirsty.

If possible, continue with regular exercise routine during the festive periods as this will allow the extra calories taken to be expended. Fast for a day or two, after the festive season as this will allow the body to expend the additional calories that have been stored during the period of over indulgence.

Specially formulated supplement for Appetite amd Weight Control are available from the clinic. This article is contributed by

Dr Derek Koh

As for forming an alumni committee, Joy Gomes, 20, who is doing a diploma in early childhood education thought it was a great idea. “What makes anyone come back to continue their relationship with the school is the warm friendships we forge and how close the facilitators are to the students,’’ she said. For all graduates, the key consideration is the amount of time that they need to commit to keeping the committee going. But judging from the warm and inclusive atmosphere on that Saturday morning, things look very promising indeed.

MoneySense In our last issue we shared some tips and advice on how to manage your money when you start working. But how about those of you who have to go through National Service after you have completed you diploma first? At the age of 19 (most of you!), many will leave the comforts of home, undergo basic military training and hone survival skills in rugged environments. Many will leave NS more self-reliant and independent than before. If you are still receiving an allowance from your parents, getting your first NS allowance will probably be quite meaningful for you. You have worked hard and earned it.

“How am I going to spend this money? What food should I get when I book out of camp this weekend? Where can I hang out with my section mates?” It can be mind boggling just thinking of how to splurge this allowance. After an entire week of tough training, surely it’s time for a reward?

Before you start spending, do remember that the monthly allowance credited into your bank account is meant to defray your living expenses as you serve the nation. If you splurge the way you dream of, you will almost certainly be penniless before you realise it. You will be left scratching your head (or rather, your helmet) wondering how to survive until your next “pay” comes in.

Opt for stay-in at your camp, if this is an option. This can cut down unnecessary travel and food expenses (free meals of reasonable standard are provided). If you are feeling restless, drop by the gym for a workout or head to the “Mess” for entertainment. Make an effort to maintain or even improve your fitness. Do well for your Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) and you get a monetary incentive every year. The same goes for attaining the “Marksman” standard at live-firing. Spend quality time with your family over the weekend. Use your short time at home to catch up with them instead of going out.

Participate in the SAF Group Term Life Insurance Scheme. The policy provides cover for life insurance / personal accidents; giving financial support to your family should you meet any mishaps in or outside camp. Have a budget to help you live within your means. These are some simple ways to stretch your allowance and make it last a bit longer. Take charge and spend within your limits so that the money will tide you over to the next “payday”, as NSFs fondly call it.
