As graduation comes – despite COVID-19 – memories of the many meaningful lessons and events in Republic Polytechnic (RP) fill me. Despite being an ex-polytechnic dropout, I have managed to come this far, graduating as the valedictorian of my diploma course. I have done this, of course, with the support of the many amazing lecturers, staff members and friends at RP.

My first recollections of re-entering polytechnic are of encountering the Problem-based Learning (PBL) system. Compared to the traditional learning method, PBL seems more realistic as it involves analysing challenges and proposing solutions. Hence, students practise a more modern and practical approach to understanding the theory behind various problems. RP has also presented me with opportunities to give back to the community. One was the International Coastal Cleanup Singapore (ICCS), an event on 21 September 2019 dedicated to cleaning the shores of Singapore. Another opportunity was “Thank Your Cleaner Day”, when we made videos to show our appreciation to the backstage workers at our polytechnic facilities. Our project won second place in the competition – but the true prize was in ensuring that our appreciation for these cleaners was highlighted. RP has helped me transit into a modern Singaporean, one who is aware of the impact of global warming and various other problems of the world, and who is prepared to try to make a difference. For this, I am thankful.

The journey towards one’s goals is as crucial as the goals themselves; even if the goals are not eventually achieved, one would still have learned much from that journey. This has definitely been my experience in Republic Polytechnic (RP). Looking back, the past three years have been filled with their share of tears and triumphs. Manoeuvring the Problem-based Learning (PBL) pedagogy, struggling to memorise a dictionary of medication terms, and eventually having to apply everything during the internship was no easy feat. Nevertheless, all these experiences combined have equipped me to be more self-reliant and resourceful. At the end of the day, what matters is how I reap the benefits of the knowledge acquired. As much as the academics are important, RP also puts much emphasis on the non-academic pursuits of students. My time spent with the 16th Student Council as an Executive Committee Member was truly meaningful. I was given the opportunity to be an integral part of RP-wide events, such as the International Service Learning Programme to Vietnam, Freshmen Orientation Programme 2019 and Save Gaia. I am humbled to be a part of such a hardworking and driven committee, one that has helped shaped me into the person I am today. None of these would have been possible without the people around me. To the dedicated lecturers of RP who have always had faith in me; the staff at Clementi Polyclinic Pharmacy where I interned; the friends who have stood by me; and my family who never gives up on me, I owe a debt of gratitude.

REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC YEARBOOK 2020 Dear SEG’s Graduating Class of 2020,
Today marks a new chapter of your life as a graduating polytechnic student. My heartiest congratulations to all of you for arriving at this important milestone! You have achieved a lot in the past three years, both in the academic and non-academic areas. Many of you have done RP proud by winning awards and medals in national and international competitions. Many students have also participated in service learning locally or regionally. You have served others in need and learned to not just take but also give. And you did so by applying your engineering knowledge through the Engineering in Community programme. I urge you to continue empathising with others and helping those in need after you leave RP. Besides gaining academic knowledge and technical skills, you have also forged great friendships and built a strong network of contacts. These are important takeaways that will stay with you for a long time to come.

Some of you may be joining the workforce after this, and some may further your studies at a university on a full- or part-time basis. Most of the boys will be enlisting for National Service. Regardless of what you do next, I am confident that your three years at Republic Polytechnic’s School of Engineering (SEG) have moulded you into resourceful and adaptable individuals who will contribute valuable engineering knowledge and skillsets to both Singapore’s and the global economy. You will soon realise that your decision to obtain an engineering diploma was very sound: the future is a technologically-driven one, and engineering will always have an important role to play. As you progress in your career, I urge you to keep learning and bear in mind our motto: “SEG CAN – Confident, Adaptable and Never Give Up!” On behalf of SEG, I welcome all of you to the RP and SEG alumni family. I wish you success in your future endeavours and look forward to your contributions as our alumni and ambassadors.

RP has provided me with invaluable opportunities for gaining exposure and experience beyond the classroom. I am honoured to have been selected for the Global Entrepreneur Internship Programme (GEIP), where I had the privilege of completing my internship in Finland. It was a life-changing opportunity that widened my view of the world and contributed greatly to my self-development. I also participated in the Temasek Foundation Specialists’ Community Action and Leadership Exchange (TF SCALE) programme, during which we went to Myanmar to build a monitoring system for a school, with the help of Internet of Things (IoT). For my Final Year Project, I had the privilege of collaborating with the South West Community Development Council. We designed and fabricated the South West Natural Heritage Map, which was displayed at the Singapore Bicentennial Roadshow from April to August. This interactive South West Natural Heritage Map was also reported in LianHe Zaobao (in both its online and print editions). Through RP’s unique Problem-based Learning approach, I have learned to view problems as opportunities for growth and for unlocking creativity and resourcefulness. One important lesson that Reflection Journal (RJ) has imparted is that self-reflection is truly the school of wisdom and a channel of self-discovery and change. RP has also exposed me to voluntary work in childcare centres and nursing homes, where I learned to look beyond myself and my needs to the community.

Republic Polytechnic (RP) has prepared me well for my future. Taught using the Problem-based Learning format, working together in groups and meeting new classmates every semester, we learned to adapt quickly to new situations and new environments. In addition, daily presentations allowed us to build confidence and hone our presentation skills. In 2018, I won the Diploma prize, two module prizes, and four Director Roll of Honour awards. I was also nominated for Diploma in Aerospace Engineering’s Valedictorian.

RP also organised many non-academic activities for students. These included leadership camps, such as Camp Renaissance VIII 2018 at Pulau Ubin and the Orientation Programme Student Leadership Camp. I also competed in Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) Games 2019 – for the first time – as part of the taekwondo team in three categories (Solo, Mixed Pair and Mixed Team); the Mixed team achieved third place. In addition, RP gave me opportunities to go overseas for my learning experience, such as the Student Overseas Travel (SOT) to Bangkok and my internship programme in Vietnam. Living and working in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) for five months during the internship, I learned so much about Vietnam’s culture and also to be more appreciative of the things we have in Singapore. As the vice-president of SEG Club and member of Engineering Leadership Programme (eLEAP), I led and organised several major events, including SEG Welcome Camp 2018 and LSLP (Local Service-Learning Project). The LSLP that I am proudest about, organised by Care Corner Singapore, was cleaning houses for and giving away goodies to the needy elderly of Woodlands and Marsiling. I would like to thank RP for every opportunity given to me and for shaping me into the successful graduate that I am today.

My heartiest congratulations to each one of you for completing the polytechnic chapter of your academic journey, culminating in the Graduation Ceremony 2020. For most male graduates, your next lap will be National Service, whereas for the female graduates, yours may be to the workforce or the pursuit of further studies. Whatever route you may take, I would like to leave you some food for thought to sustain you through uncertain times or stressful moments • Armed with a Plan – In Sports Psychology, we talked about goal–setting plan. What it means is that you have a clear plan of how you intend to reach your goal. Specific and clear goals with realistic timeline will lead you to greater output and better performance which in turn will give you a sense of pride and triumph. Thereafter, it propels you forward to seek out your next immediate goal. The small steps of success, which you achieve along the way, will surely go a long way in building your self-esteem and selfconfidence when dealing with setbacks along the way.
Director School of Sports, Health and Leisure
• Armed with the Ability to View Life in Perspective – I recalled listening to 93.8FM deejay Eugene Loh’s frequently articulated statement: “If you change your perspective, you will change in life.” Upon reflection, you will realise the deep wisdom that comes with this phrase. Too often, we are too caught up with our daily lives only to lose sight of what is really important to us. This is especially true at your age where you perceive the world to be your oyster and you are busy accumulating material gains – an indication to your peers that you have “arrived”. It is all too easy if everything goes smoothly in life. However, life is never meant to be a bed of roses. Above all things, it is through the trials and tribulations that you will perceive the fragility of life, which in turn warms your heart to cherish life and all it has to offer. • Armed with an Attitude of Gratitude – When life gets hectic and you begin to feel overwhelmed, take a moment to focus on the people and things that you are grateful for in life. When you are grateful, one of the positive impacts on you is the way you think and feel. You will find yourself in a positive emotional state, which in turn energises your overall emotional well-being and helps maintains a positive outlook. Inevitably, it will be difficult for people around you to not be influenced by your little acts of gratitude and not change for the better because staying positive is contagious indeed.

I enrolled into the Diploma in Outdoor Adventure Learning (DOAL) in Republic Polytechnic (RP) through the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE). Looking back, this was the best choice that I could have made for my studies.

My most memorable experience in RP was the Overseas Industry Immersion Programme (IIP) with Outward Bound Vietnam. Living overseas for five months allowed me to become more self-reliant as I embraced the culture of a foreign country miles away from home. I learned a lot about myself, the people around me, the outdoors, and different aspects of everyday life through this short but enriching stint. The Problem-based Learning approach in Republic Polytechnic has suited me well. It challenged me to think out of the box and developed my ability to think critically. Daily presentations and the resulting question-and-answer sessions built my confidence and taught me how to think on my feet. Above all, the reflection journals are a rich source of learning for me, as I had to consolidate and make sense of my thoughts at the end of each day. RP life has been fantastic. It has reignited my passion for learning and interest in discovery. Each day presented a new challenge and a new opportunity to learn from those around me. I look forward to applying all I have learned to the next phase of my learning journey.

Scoring 25 for my O Levels and getting into a diploma course that wasn’t part of my 12 choices – what did those low points in my life lead to? Surprisingly, these three years in Republic Polytechnic (RP) became the highest point of my life. It was here that the wide range of Interest Groups (IG) and opportunities, coupled with additional courses that I opted to do, allowed me to come closer to my aspiration of being a philanthropist – through entrepreneurship.
Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management
Regarding the aspect of serving, the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) IG and the School of Sports, Health and Leisure Club provided me with the opportunity to volunteer for community and leadership events. In 2019, I won the NYAA Gold award. I also had the chance to participate in various international conferences, such as the Youth Model ASEAN Conference, where international friendship are forged for a lifetime.
SIEW TING FUNG
As for entrepreneurship, I took additional courses that allowed me to pursue a Diploma Plus in International Business and a Certificate in Chinese Business Perspective. I also took on the Entrepreneurial Trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou. In addition, I was lucky to be nominated to pursue an all-expenses paid certificate course at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as an entrepreneurial internship placement in Finland.
BOOK 2020
Last but not least, I am privileged to have received scholarships and diploma and module prizes, especially as the financial rewards have allowed me to focus on my studies without worrying about my finances. My conclusion as I graduate? Nothing can stand in your way if you are a student in Republic Polytechnic!

REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC YEARBOOK 2020 To SMC Class Graduating Class of 2020,
My heartiest congratulations to you as you reach another milestone of your life. No matter where you have come from or what challenges you have encountered, you have emerged victorious by graduating from your Diploma! While this marks the end of your journey with us, it is just the beginning of another brand new journey, which I hope you will begin with four important mindsets, summed up by the acronym STAR.
SIM CHOON HOU
Director School of Management and Communication
First, be Shiny. As you focus on the goals of your next journey, also keep in mind the people around you who may be less fortunate than you and may need help. Be the light that shines into the lives of others. In addition, have a spirit of excellence so that you can continue to shine at your workplace and community as a proud alumni of RP and SMC.
NIC YEARBOOK 2020
Secondly, be Thankful. While there will always be challenging situations, you are not alone in your journey of life. Whatever situation you are in, always have a spirit of thankfulness, remembering that your parents, friends and teachers, who had been a part of your journey in RP, will continue to be there for you. Thirdly, be Adventurous. Remember that often you are the one who limits yourself, not the situation or the people around you. Venture out of your comfort zone and you will be amazed by the new things that you will see and learn. Last but not least, be Relevant. Learning is lifelong. Continue to learn new skills in emerging domains. Keep a lookout for lifelong learning courses offered by RP and SMC that are relevant to your needs and interests. Continue to stay engaged with us. With that, go forth and be a STAR in the new chapter of your life and I wish you all the very best.

Three years pursuing a Diploma in Mass Communication in RP have been such a fulfilling experience for me. RP’s unique teaching model has helped maximise my learning potential and given me valuable ways for involving myself. These opportunities include being an editor of The Republican Post, SMC’s online magazine, and an internship stint at Channel NewsAsia.

In addition, representing Republic Polytechnic in competitions, such as the Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition (SHSFC) and PacificLight Cr8 Sustainability Competition, gave me profound insights into the importance of having the right attitude, grit and determination to succeed and excel. I was Champion in the PacificLight competition in 2018 and won the Merit Award in the SHSFC in 2018. I also had the opportunity to participate in an overseas exchange programme in Japan, where I worked with Japanese students from Nagano KOSEN Institute to develop and present a business start-up plan to KOSEN Directors. As I graduate, I would like to express appreciation to all my lecturers and give special thanks to my friends and family for their endearing support! :)

In 2017, I entered RP, lacking confidence and habouring a fear of public speaking. Having to do a presentation to 20 strangers on a daily basis was a daunting prospect. However, I gradually understood the rationale behind Problem-based Learning (PBL), and discovered that speaking up in class helped to facilitate learning for myself and my peers, while questions and comments by my peers and facilitators helped me to think critically. RP has also provided me with many opportunities outside the classroom as well, such as the Pre-University Seminar and Harvard Business School Club of Singapore Mentorship Programme. Participating in these programmes opened doors for me to meet people from other institutions and learn from mentors working in different fields. These are valuable experiences that I will carry with me as I move on to the next phase of life. The three years in RP have been a fruitful and insightful learning experience. I am thankful that RP’s PBL has imbued in me the confidence to meet all future endeavours.

Congratulations! Class of 2020, you have made it! I wish you all the best as you embark on your next phase in life – be it serving NS, furthering your studies or starting your career. Remember, for every action, there is a reaction, be it positive or negative. Put your heart into everything you do, and I am sure your efforts will bring you success, joy and fulfilment. Be kind to others. Show gratitude, pay it back when you receive good and pay it forward to receive more. Focus on building relationships. Always be true, be honest. Practise empathetic listening, respect and trust others. Always challenge yourself, ask “Why”, think different, think simple.

Finally, take good care of yourself. Eat well, exercise, reflect, have enough sleep, look good and feel good, because the world needs your positive energy and contribution. Just as an archer looks at the mark on the path of the infinite and bends his bow to launch his arrow, I am sending you, my proud arrow, forth, with the hope that you will fly swift and far. As the Lead Peer Support Leader under the School of Hospitality (SOH) Club, I helped to oversee the welfare of my juniors and assisted with their assimilation into RP and SOH. Through the various events I helped to organised, such as the RP Open House, the Swissôtel Vertical Marathon, and the Four Seasons Hotel Singapore’s Run for Hope, I developed my mentoring, event management and communication skills, and developed into a more outgoing and confident person. Through RP’s rewards for my academic excellence, such as the module prize, diploma prize, and Director’s Roll of Honour (which I was placed on for four semesters), I have been motivated to keep doing my best. I am thankful for the recognition of my efforts. Under the Problem-based Learning pedagogy, I learned to be adaptable, flexible and creative in coming up with solutions – these are essential skills that I will now be applying at the workplace. I am thankful to SOH and the HPL Hotels & Resorts Pte Ltd’s Hospitality Excellence Scholarship, which enabled my overseas internship at Hard Rock Hotel Bali. The overseas stint provided me with valuable, authentic and memorable learning opportunities in the dynamic hospitality industry. My biggest takeaway from my internship would be “Work hard, play hard, and also take time to be kind!” I would like to thank my lecturers, family and friends for their love, encouragement, guidance and constant support. With these three wonderfully fulfilling years coming to a close, I am glad to say I made the right choice to study at RP.

Republic Polytechnic (RP) has done so much for me on my three-year educational journey. I had amazing lecturers and friends who believed in me and supported me in so much that I did. It was in RP that I gained selfconfidence and strove beyond what I thought were my limits. When one mentions RP, the first thing that comes to mind is Problem-based Learning (PBL). I had love-hate relationship with this method of teaching. Starting each morning at RP knowing I had to solve new problems together with my classmates and present our work at the end of the day felt so challenging. However, I was eventually able to apply concepts to scenarios more easily, including in other subjects, and I believe I learned so much more compared to sitting through hours of lecture in the traditional learning method. I was also able to apply what I learned in school to my internship work. More than just academics, RP allowed me to explore the different interests that I have. In my first year, I was given the opportunity to join the SOH Club as an executive committee member in the Publication & Publicity department. In the next two years, as a member of the Tennis Interest Group (IG), I represented the school in the annual POL–ITE Games and won a gold medal. I am extremely thankful to all my lecturers in SOH. They not only helped me in my academic pursuits but also encouraged me to chase my passions outside the classroom. To all my lecturers, THANK YOU for being more than just a lecturer. Thank you for being my friends, my mentors and my role models.

REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC YEARBOOK 2020 Dear Graduating Class of 2020,
With the coronavirus pandemic, it is sad that your graduation ceremony cannot be celebrated in the usual manner. However, this does not change the achievements of the Class of 2020. You have made an impact through the work you have done. You have travelled beyond Singapore’s shores, reached out to people with special needs and staged multisensory experiences to bring joy to their lives. Amongst you are socially conscious millennials who have produced films to tell the world that honour and kindness are the values that truly matter. You have won numerous competition awards and published work with the skills you have acquired here. More importantly, the work you have created possesses purpose and compassion designed to help humanity. Among you are those who have been through hardship, yet you are helping others by telling your stories through art to inspire and create awareness. You truly are Generation Grit. I am immensely proud of every one of you. Your perseverance, focus and commitment to your studies have brought you to this point. My heartiest congratulations on your graduation! As you step into the next stage of your life, always remember that you can do ANYTHING you set your heart to. Do not let the present state of the world disrupt your dreams and goals for the future. Stay on course, stay positive and stay proactive. As Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat during his 2020 Budget Speech, “Focus not on getting through this downturn, but being ready to ride the ‘upturn’ when it comes.”

Diploma in Media Production and Design
During my time at RP, I always tried my best in everything that I do. The Problem-based Learning in RP really pushed me beyond my boundaries and helped me understand the subject concepts even better. For doing well academically, I was a recipient of the Republic Polytechnic Higher Year Scholarship in 2019 and the Choo-Lim Scholarship in 2018. I am also honoured to be on the STA Director’s Role of Honour in 2017 and 2018 for three semesters!

Outside the classroom, I was a part of the STA Club, where we planned camps and events. Through those events, I acquired leadership and communication skills, learned how to work with different people and, most importantly, forged new bonds. Apart from STA activities, I accepted an opportunity to join the Industry Mentorship Programme in 2018, where I was attached to a real-life company, Up & Up. This experience enabled me to gain insights into how small independent firms are run. After which, I served my internship at the Prime Minister’s Office. Together with 45 peers, I also went on School Overseas Trips (SOT) to Melbourne and Japan, in 2018 and 2019 respectively, to learn more about the media industry. On behalf of my STA batch, I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation to all lecturers and staff for their hard work and support. Without you, we would not be where we are today. So, thank you very much! When we graduate from RP, we will all be moving on to different parts of our life, but I am sure we will forever remember the friendships we made here and all the good memories we created. We have braved the once-unfamiliar system of Republic Poly – the PBL, RJs, Life Skills, presentations – and shown what we are capable of achieving, both as engineers and performers. We have participated not only in classroom activities, but also in projects beyond the course curriculum. IGNITE! To honour and celebrate the contributions of our alumni, RP has constructed the Alumni Family Tree. It is located at the Mound, next to the driveway at Republic Polytechnic Centre (RPC). The Mound’s peak represents our alumni’s aspirations to reach for greater heights. In its prominent position at the polytechnic’s entrance, it is visible from all levels within RPC, thus serving as a reminder for students to achieve their best. The Alumni Family Tree was officially launched by the RP Board of Governors on 4 May 2015. It symbolises RP’s growing alumni Family – firmly rooted in the values of RP, resplendently branching outwards to new challenges and aspirations. Every leaf represents a cohort of graduates embodying the moral values and strong affiliations forged during their time of learning, friendship and life in RP. From the Class of 2006 to the Class of 2020, RP is proud to have graduated a total of 15 cohorts of students.
