the Season

BY Nurin Qistina Suhaime Diploma In Integrated Events Management

It feels as though we were only just counting down to 2017 and now here we are, at the end of 2017. How time flies! The end of a year is always a good time to celebrate our achievements, reflect on where we can improve and be thankful for all our blessings. RP alumni have continued to blaze new paths and it has been a source of great pride for us to bring you their stories through dREam Magazine throughout the year. This issue is no different. We bring you Nadia AlInsyiraah’s amazing journey from RP to a top Korean university, coverage of Dominic Lee Yong Quan and Toh Zheng An being awarded healthcare scholarships from the Minister for Health, and a gripping first-hand account from an RP alumnus who has staffed the F1 Singapore Grand Prix twice! Amid the year-end festive merrymaking, we urge you to spare a thought for students who may be in need. About 45% of our student population requires some form of financial assistance. Do consider contributing to RP’s Needy Student Fund. Every dollar counts. If you wish to make a difference in our students’ lives, please write to us at help-graduate@rp.edu.sg From all of us at dREam, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May your dREams soar ever higher in 2018.

PS: We received feedback that you love our Alumni Calendar which we have been issuing for the past four years. Hence, we have included a complimentary Alumni Calendar 2018 with this issue of dREam! Display the calendar boldly in your house or office to let everyone know you are proud to be an RP alumnus!

On the night of our bonding camp on the 12th of June, RP Touch Football team, RP Rainbows, called upon our alumni for a long-awaited match between the past and present players (PVP). The team had organised two concurrent matches for that night: a girl’s match and a mixed match. For most of the teams, it had been a while since they had played a full 40-minute game and the jitters were setting in. However, when familiar faces started pouring in, the excitement to start the game heightened. Throughout the game, touchdowns were scored, dives were attempted and lots of beautiful gameplay was executed by both teams. By the end of the 40 minutes, both teams were pleased with the game and the past-players team took the win by two touchdowns. When asked how she felt that evening, ex-captain AY10/11 said,

“I am happy that Rainbows organised this game and am glad to see that they are putting in the effort to train hard for the upcoming season.”

THOR-RIFIC TIME

BY Office of Student and Graduate Affairs (Alumni Services)

Alumni were treated to a night of blockbuster action at the screening of the highly anticipated, “Thor: Ragnarok”, on 28 October (Sat) at Golden Village, Suntec City. Organised by Office of Student and Graduate Affairs (Alumni Services) and supported by Ministry of Social and Family Development (Social Development Network), the event effectively brought over 160 alumni together to network with one another and stay connected with RP. Besides the movie screening, alumni attendees were treated to a sumptuous buffet lunch and the opportunity to get up close with Republic Polytechnic Alumni Committee (RPAC) members. The event provided an avenue to promote Club Republic and gather valuable feedback to improve alumni services offered. We would like to thank ALL alumni and RPAC members for their continuous support for Club Republic events. Stay tuned for more exciting events coming your way in 2018! Roaring Good Time at

Singapore Grand Prix

BY Kelda Chua Diploma in Information Technology (2014)

Being part of the Formula 1 (F1) Singapore Grand Prix (SGP) is always an incredible experience. I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of it twice. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, F1 has grown to be an international event that people look forward to every year. From big entertainment headliners at the Padang to seeing the safety cars during the race, it is definitely an adrenaline–pumping event to be at! I was a gate supervisor at the biggest gate at F1. It is a constant fight to make everything under your care perfect. From administration, liaising with various stakeholders to execution on event day, it is no easy feat being part of the operations team. This year’s race weekend was filled with sunshine and rain, but that didn’t dampen the mood of the patrons and my crew. In fact, the weather helped us control the crowd a little! It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. A tiring weekend passed quickly, but the encouragement of friends helps you pull through. Tough times don’t last long! F1 SGP has always been a place of reunion for Republic Polytechnic alumni. From full-time staff to volunteers, you are bound to bump into someone you know! It is heartening to see fellow friends come back year after year to be part of this international event. I’m glad that this year’s race isn’t the end for Singapore, and I’m excited to see what’s in store next year and in the years to come. Cheers to Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on crossing its 10th Anniversary; here’s a toast to the next four years!

SKILLSFUTURE EARN & LEARN PROGRAMME (ELP) FOR

HOTELS SECTOR

e Scholarship r a c h t l a s He for Duo From RP

I have always been very passionate about working in the hotel industry, which led me to enrol in DHHM at RP. After my 3-year learning journey in RP, my passion and interest for the industry had deepened and I was determined to embark on a career within the Hospitality Industry. In our final year at RP, our lecturers introduced the SkillsFuture Earn & Learn Programme (ELP) to us and I thought it was an ideal pathway for me to gain further experience within the hotel industry. At the same time, I would be able to attend lessons at RP to pursue a Specialist Diploma in Hospitality Business Management.

BY Yogaraj Veerasamy SHL Grad Chapter Reps

One of the reasons that led me to join Dorsett Singapore was because I felt comfortable with the culture and values of the organization, as they were aligned with what I believed in. I believe in starting small to learn and Dorsett Singapore provided the opportunity for me to learn the basics as I embark on my career within the Hospitality Industry. I am very thankful I chose Dorsett Singapore because they have given me ample time, opportunity and guidance to learn and adapt myself to this industry. One of the things I enjoy about this programme is that I am able to attend lessons in RP to deepen my knowledge about the hotel industry. I am able to use the knowledge gained to help others at the workplace and also apply what I learn to my role at work. I feel a sense of satisfaction after joining the ELP as I can see myself growing in maturity and am more responsible as an individual.

School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) alumni Toh Zheng An and Dominic Lee Yong Quan recently received MOH Holdings (MOHH) Healthcare Scholarships at an award ceremony held on 25 July 2017. Graced by Guest of Honour, Minister for Health, Mr Gan Kim Yong, the ceremony marked the start of an exciting journey packed with great learning and promising career opportunities for both the 24-year-old lads! Zheng An, a 2017 graduate from the Diploma in Health Management and Promotion, secured a scholarship to read Nursing at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Dominic, a 2013 graduate from the Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences, reads Physiotherapy at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). When asked what triggered their interest to pursue healthcare, Zheng An shared,

“I lost a close family member to a stroke, who passed away directly in front of me. I felt really helpless when that happened and I do not want to have that sense of helplessness ever again. This is why I am pursuing nursing, to help people. I want to interact with people and make a difference in their lives.” Dominic’s interest was stirred when he started accompanying his grandmother to physiotherapy sessions. That’s when he realised that this could be a meaningful career for himself. SHL has every reason to be proud of such inspiring young men who want to excel in serving the public as health advocates. Well done Zheng An and Dominic, our best wishes for your university studies!

REFLECTIONS 2017

A Singaporean in Coping in Kimchi-land

Fitting into any new environment is hard but to manage in a country where the majority speaks Korean was a particular challenge for Nadia. During her first year, she stayed on campus, and her life revolved around going to classes and going back to her room.

Two years ago, Nadia AlInsyiraah Ismail, 21, was at a crossroads. Like every newly minted diploma-holder, she hadn’t been sure if she ought to work or study next. She had graduated from RP with a Diploma in Mass Communication, known as Diploma in Communication and Information Design (DCID) during her time. Following a successful internship at MediaCorp, she was offered a full-time contract. But prior to that, Nadia had also applied to several universities— mostly in Asia. As fate would have it, on the day she was supposed to sign the contract with MediaCorp, Nadia received an email to say she had been accepted into a top Korean university— the century-old Ewha Womans University. “It was so surreal! I couldn’t believe I even got in. So I spoke to my supervisor at work, and he said this was an opportunity I cannot pass up. So I packed my bags and headed to Seoul,’’ said Nadia who is studying for her Bachelor of International Studies (Law & Diplomacy), double majoring in Global Korean Studies.

But why Korea?

“I have always wanted to study in East Asia. I find it has so much culture to offer. My mother was the one who told me to give Korea a chance. I could read basic Hangul so I thought, why not polish my proficiency, so I just sent in my application,’’ explained Nadia who admits she was a fan of Korean movies, drama and music. Increasingly, students from all over the world are heading to South Korean universities, which are reportedly some of the best in Asia. The living cost, as well as tuition fees, tend to be lower than at other Western universities and there are attractive scholarship offers too. Nadia is one of over 100,000 international students in Korea, the first time the country has achieved this landmark figure, according to recent government reports.

10

“You feel very homesick and then there’s the whole culture to learn— Koreans don’t speak English and you are expected to pick up Korean. Plus living expenses were not cheap, so I ended up having a lot of instant noodles! Those initial months were quite lonely and I called home a lot,’’ said Nadia shaking her head at the memory. Her family visits as often as they can and her mum usually stays for at least a month, cooking her favourite dishes. Besides the language barrier, Nadia observed that in general, Koreans did not mingle easily with exchange students. Added to that is the culture of academic excellence. “Studying in Seoul is almost like a competitive sport. During exams, people bring in their pillows to the library and people go super early to “chope” spots. I am not naturally smart, so I make up for it by working really hard and being consistent with my notes and readings,’’ said Nadia, who will graduate in 2019 and intends to pursue a Master’s Degree after. But perhaps one of the most intense experiences of her time so far was when mass protests to oust President Park Guen-Hye started at Ewha. Nadia explained that one of the students had links to the President and students started a sit-in, which soon spread to professors and then out into the city. The protests eventually made it to the heart of Seoul with more than a million protesters taking to the streets. “Being Singaporean, protests are so alien to me! I was actually very nervous and had no idea what to do. The international students decided that we had to stay out of it, but the whole atmosphere was incredible. I had never seen anything like that, where civic movements can bring down a President,’’ said Nadia. President Park was eventually removed from office. Nadia is slowly becoming a true global citizen as she expertly navigates the rush hour crowd and speaks a smattering of Korean to friends and shopkeepers.

“I would encourage RP students to think out of the box and try new things. The learning curve is so steep, but it is so worth it!’’

Engineering a Good Time Talk about an epic homecoming! The School of Engineering (SEG) held its SEG Grand Alumni Homecoming event on 15 Sep 2017. Grand is certainly the right word to describe the event.

Eating Right

During Festive Seasons!

The event gathered alumni from the very first batch of SEG graduates back in 2006 until the latest graduates from 2017! A total of 101 alumni turned up. There was reminiscing and bonding aplenty. Pioneer Sharing

Speaking on stage, Mr Stanley Tan (from the first batch to graduate in 2006 with a Diploma in Electronics Engineering—Wireless Technology; currently working as Manager, Capability Building Directorate, Smart Nation and Digital Government Office, PMO) shared how he had benefited from his journey in RP, how continuous learning/upgrading helps him stay relevant in the industry, and how he has been planning for his current and future career development. Another “pioneer” graduate, Mr Alvin Arulselvan (from the second batch to graduate in 2007 with a Diploma in Industrial and Systems Engineering, currently working at Centre of Innovation for Supply Chain Management as Project Staff) brought the crowd on a journey reminiscing his time in RP. He showed photos of his time studying at RP’s Tanglin campus, student activities, class presentation, FYP exhibition and his graduation.

Free and Easy

The programme then segued into a free and easy session during which conversation and memories flowed. Alumni caught up with their course mates and updated the lecturers on their current career paths. A live social wall display showed in real time photos taken on the spot. Here is what one attendee, Chen Cong, who graduated in 2016 with a Diploma in Supply Chain Management,

“It’s a great experience for me to attend the SEG Alumni Gathering 2017 after having graduated a year ago. It’s just like coming back home where all the familiar faces are still around. The career sharing session by our seniors was quite interesting. I am looking forward to the next Alumni gathering event.”

had to say,

Eating right should be a lifelong decision that will eventually become a habit. If we have the correct eating habits ingrained in us, it wouldn’t be so harmful to indulge our tastebuds (and tummies!) occasionally during festive seasons. However, if we are still concerned about the possible 2 to 3kg weight-gain that sometimes comes with a period of festive feasting, we must be mindful of the excess calories we eat.

Eat smaller portions

Festive foods are frequently oily or sweet. Such food will contain proportionately more calories. Try eating less. Less eating = less calorie input. It may be useful to drink up to 500ml of water half an hour before a meal to reduce our appetite.

Skip main meals like lunch or dinner:

if there are gatherings with feasting planned after those regular timings. This will reduce overall calories consumed for that day.

Reduce,or avoid sweet or alcoholic drinks:

as they contain a lot of calories. They are usually the culprits in contributing to excessive calories consumed during festive seasons. If thirsty, drink water in between the occasional sweet drinks.

Continue with a regular exercise routine

Festive periods should not be an excuse to neglect exercising. Exercise allows the extra calories consumed to be expended.

Try fasting for a day or two

Going on a short fast post-festive season will allow the body to expend the additional calories stored during the period of over-indulgence.

MONEY SENSE

Dream to Start Taking Control of Your Money! It is never too late to start taking control of your money matters. Get started by thinking about how you manage your money every day and what goals you have for the future that will cost money, e.g. further education, a wedding, your retirement and so on and so forth. In this issue of dREam, let’s talk about how to manage your money! STARTING WORK

As you transition from student life into the workforce, most of you will become financially self-reliant for the first time. These are exciting times—who wouldn’t feel a sense of elation when we see our first salary being credited into our bank accounts? But few of us can afford to spend our money without care. Some of us may already have responsibilities—you may have dependants counting on you financially, perhaps elderly parents or younger siblings who do not have any income of their own. There may also be student loans to clear off quickly too. Even if you land your dream job, or secure your dream income, you can still land yourself in trouble if you are not sufficiently armed with knowledge of how to manage your finances. Money management skills are a must-have.

It’s and it’ll last you a lifetime! – brought to you by Alumni Services, Republic Polytechnic

We are looking to expand the service to CET students soon.

CONTROL YOUR SPENDING AND CREDIT USAGE

• It is quite natural to want to reward yourself for your hard work but do keep this in perspective. If the latest must- have designer bag or IT gadget takes up a generous chunk of your monthly income, maybe you should rethink the concept of reward, especially since these items are not investments and lose their value almost immediately. Little self-control and a strong urge to splurge can only spell trouble in the longer run. • As the old adage goes, always spend within your means (but this doesn’t mean it’s ok to spend everything you earn). Think hard before you borrow. Getting a loan or credit line should only be a last resort because of the costs you will incur and the complications involved if you cannot keep up with your debt commitments.

GIVE A SHOUT-OUT TO YOUR ALMA MATER Stay connected with your alma mater through the official RP alumni Facebook fanpage at www.facebook.com/alumniRP

MANAGING YOUR INCOME

• Identify your disposable income (i.e. how much of your salary is left after paying taxes and CPF, rent or contribution for your share of household expenses to your parents, etc.) and make sure your monthly expenditure does not exceed what is left of your income. Having trouble keeping track of your spending? Fret not and read on.

LEARN TO MAKE A BUDGET

• A practical way of managing your disposable income and monitoring your expenditure is to draw up a budget. A simple one can be planned in just three steps: 1. List all your daily living expenses (transport, meals and rent, contribution to household expenses, etc.). 2. Decide how much of your salary you intend to spend on each item and stick to it strictly. 3. Set aside the rest of your pay and save it. Start with realistic amounts first (maybe $200 per month) and aim to work towards saving at least 10% of your pay. Save more if you can. Do remember to review your budget every now and then. You may find that your intended expense limits are unrealistic—they may be lower or higher than they really are. If you need assistance, use an online budget calculator. Don’t be too discouraged if you have not been able to follow your budget closely. Motivate yourself to try harder next month by keeping your financial goals in mind:

it’s never too early to save for your retirement, for your parents’ expenses when they retire if they are counting on you, your dream flat or a dream holiday. 14
