In the past three months, we experienced a wide variety of events such as Ancien Adieus – A Senior’s Farewell (pg 2), and Graduation 2007(pg 4). Find out more about the exciting activities and entertaining performances which took place in Ancien Adieus, which ran with a masquerade theme in What’s H@ppening. Also featured in What’s H@ppening is our graduating bunch, who got to celebrate the end of their education here at RP with the launch of RP’s very own graduation gown (pg 4). In this issue of Diary of a dREamer, we followed-up with the very first Republic Idol, Hafiz, to find out what he’s been doing since he’s graduated from RP (pg 6). Some of our graduates might be interested to find out how they have fared in employment, compared to their peers from RP and other polytechnics. dREam has done the field checks for you through the Graduate Employment Survey. Just flip to page 8, and you will be able to find out how high a benchmark you have set for future graduates. In this issue of dREam, we’re very proud to introduce to you two news sections in our magazine – Lifestyle Titbits (pg 13) and Graduate Spotlight (pg 16). Lifestyle Titbits will feature articles on various lifestyle interests, which explains this issue’s focus on suntanning. In addition, we’re planning to feature a graduate in each issue of dREam, and this issue we caught up with Daniel Phang, the vice president of the Student’s Council. If you have someone else to recommend, do remember to write to us! dREam is also hoing to further engage the graduate community and have you write in to us with any suggestions on how to improve the magazine, and any comments you may have – good or bad! Get Shorty! Although that is what his friends fondly address him, Sean strongly believes in the saying, “good things come in small packages”. Taking over as the only male in Graduate Services, Sean is a friendly, easy-going and loves to fish! Apart from spending regular weekends patiently waiting for a fish to take bite, Sean loves to play sports like soccer and badminton. In his varsity days, Sean was a Sports Leader, which involved him in organizing events and activities for his peers and juniors. He treasures the strong bonds forged through those activities and would like to translate his experience to RP through Club Republic. With a good listening ear, Sean is easily approachable if you want to have a chat or even join him for a fishing trip or two.

A farewell party was thrown for the graduating class of 2004 on the 10th of March 2007 at The Republic Cultural Center (TRCC). Ancien Adieus was a colorful affair, with graduates donning party wear of various kinds befitting the event’s masquerade theme. By Vanessa Choo
The event kicked off at 6pm, which saw over 450 participants registering. The crowd was abuzz with so much to see and do! Running simultaneously were various station games laid out in an IR fashion, where the students had to use chips in order to participate in the games. There was also a mobile photo studio with two make-up artists at hand to help students doll up for the camera and capture the night’s memories. Another way for students to leave a lasting impression was the plaster print station. Many graduates left hand prints, while the more creative molded and shaped the plaster to into various shapes and designs. They were even supplied with paint so that they could enhance their creative abilities. There were even caricaturists at hand to give a more comic impression of the participants. Towards the later part of the evening, all participants congregated in the theater where Magic IG performed. All eyes were transfixed on the two magicians as they dealt out bewildering magic tricks. This performance was followed by hip hop sextet, Style Methods, whom showed off their funky dance moves leaving everyone in the crowd fascinated. The crowd showed their appreciation by the resounding applause awarded. The performers were not the only ones to be applauded. The contestants for “Mr and Ms Best Dressed” did their best to strut their stuff on the catwalk, where some even improvised dance moves. Their peers became their judges and votes were awarded by applause. There was also a “Best Masked” on contest where creative self-made masks were selected from the crowd, and the winner determined by the organizing committee. Lastly, there was the Fraction Auction, ending the evening on a high note. This saw some friendly competition among peers for the highest bid. Among the items being auctioned were DKNY watches, various branded sports wear and accessories, a digital camera, a portable playstation as well as an iPod. All these items were auctioned off at a fraction of the retail price, which left the bid winners with gleeful smiles all night. Even after the event was declared over, many still stayed on reluctant to say goodbye. Ancien Adius was a beautiful night worth remembering and its memory will certainly remain close to the hearts of many.

Republic Polytechnic had her second graduation ceremony and this time, the graduates have an official gown to wear.

Over 500 graduands from the School of Information and Communication Technology (SIT), School of Applied Science (SAS), and School of Engineering (SEG) lined up in full graduation regalia on the 13th of March 2007. The class of 2004 was ready to receive their transcripts and scrolls to mark a very significant day of their lives. While the bulk of our graduates are due for enlistment in the Army, a good portion of graduates are looking forward to employment and furthering their studies. The solemn ceremony was held in two sessions, where the Guest-of-Honour for the morning ceremony was Mr Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence, while Dr John Lim, CEO of Health Sciences Authority, was the guest speaker for the session in the afternoon. Once the graduates received their scrolls, there were smiles all around as they left The Republic Cultural Center (TRCC) auditorium rushed to take photos with their course mates and facilitators in the crowd, bearing their school colors on their gown sash. Everyone left the venue with big smiles and happy memories and eagerly looking forward towards the future. To all our graduates, OSG wishes you all the best in everything you do!
This RP graduate seems to be a familiar face in the Malay music scene. Having released two albums and been on countless radio and television shows, Hafiz is an old hand at performing on stage and facing the media. He and his band, Merah, an alternative Indon Rock band, performed at Youth Rock! at Vivocity earlier this year, celebrating the finale to Youths Hands-On! Day @ SouthWest. dREam grabbed the chance to catch up with our very own Republic Idol to find out more about his band and what he’s been up to.

Singap You’ve won the title of Republic Idol, are you gunning to become the next Singapore Idol? I am hoping to participate in this year’s Singapore Idol, provided there are no major plans for my band to target the overseas market. I think Singapore Idol is the only likely route to fame and is the ticket to a very good opportunity for a musician to establish himself as an artist here in Singapore. Tell us more about your band, Merah, and how you guys came together. We are made up of 5 Singaporeans, from different musical backgrounds. We decided to come together and create a unique and marketable sound in the Malay music industry. Merah emerged through auditions organized from the band’s songwriter Yazri, 26, who is also the bass player and also the composer of all the songs in the latest album “Cintaku”. “Merah” is the name of your band, which also means “red” in Malay. What are the things that make you see red? I hate hypocrites, people who like to criticize behind the backs of others. It is very sad that in the music industry, politics and hypocrisy are commonplace. I try to avoid such people as much as possible. Who do you draw your inspiration from? In terms of music, I mostly look to Indonesian artists like Dewa, Padi and Radja for ideas. Other the other hand, when it comes to performing, I use Michael Bublé as my inspiration. His on-stage persona is very professional and fun!
Are your parents supportive of your music career? Yes, they are very supportive! They have turned up for almost all the shows I’ve been on. My parents frequently encourage me to pursue more good opportunities to showcase my music. They are even more supportive when it comes to performing “live”. What do you have to say to people who diss local music? We need to support local talent but with all the criticism going on about local music, how can we ever achieve great heights in the music industry? However, I believe there will be change in mindset some day, where there is no more negativity towards Singapore-made music. What’s the biggest misconception about you? That I’m old! I’m only 21 years old, but many people think I actually much older as all my band members are much older than me. Name one female celeb you’re absolutely dying to take out. Adriana Lima – she’s absolute hotness Any last words for your juniors in RP? “Study hard, do not copy each others work, and enjoy life to the fullest!” Merah’s album, Chintaku, is out in selected stores now.

You might have received a package from us last year with regards to the Graduate Employment Survey 2006 (GES). The annual Graduate Employment Surveys (GES) is conducted to ascertain the employment status of graduates from Nanyang, Ngee Ann, Republic, Singapore and Temasek polytechnics. Being the pioneer graduates of RP, you have set the benchmark for our RP graduates. We have captured some interesting details for your reference. A total of 282 of you responded to GES 2006 and contributed to a response rate of 68.4%. Which SCHOOL has the highest employment rate? Is our market value increasing? It is notable that the monthly gross salary for fresh graduates has increased over the past 3 years. The 2006 average gross salary among RP fresh graduates (in full-time permanent employment) of SG$1,702 was comparable to the polytechnics average reported for 2006 of SG$1,711. Total

Show me the money! Computer engineering fresh graduates are the highest paid graduates with an average gross monthly income of SG$2,005. On a school level, School of Engineering graduates enjoy the highest average gross income of SG$1,895. School of Chemical and Life sciences graduates have the lowest average gross income of SG$1,607. How relevant is my 3-year education in RP? Overall, about 65.5% of the graduates gave feedback that their current jobs were related/ partially related to their course. 73% of graduates in full-time permanent employment felt that their current jobs were related/partially related while only 42.8% of those in part-time employment felt so. A much higher proportion of employed (full- time and part time) graduates from the School of Engineering (80.4%) indicated that their current jobs were related to their course of study when compared with the RP average of 65.5%. This is very likely due to the specialized nature of their course. Regarding relevance of course training, 73% felt that their current jobs were relevant to a large/ satisfactory extent. Imaging and Interactive media, digital painting, real-time rendering, 3D Imaging and Animationâ&#x20AC;Ś Does any of that sound appealing to you? Well, those are just some of the courses you would have to complete while pursuing a degree in Games and Digital Art, or Games Graphics Design/Programming. With some basic background in animation, computing and programming techniques, a polytechnic graduate should be able to gain entry into such a university course, with appropriate exemptions depending on their grades. The demand for graduates in the creative industries has been on the rise in the recent years. This is especially so in the area of electronic games industry. Digital artists work together with games designers and programmers to design various platforms used in PC consoles and mobile devices.

One university which provides such program is RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. The university provides an exciting learning experience to provide both broad and specific skills applicable to many areas in games design and programming. Students are able to practice their skills in special media labs and studios, similar to that of the actual electronic games industry. Upon completion of their degree in RMIT University, students would have acquired a wide range of aesthetic and technical abilities within the disciplines of art, design and programming. This would enable them to enter the industry as animators, 3D visualisers and modelers, games programmers, researchers and digital artists. Some other electives taken by these students include Art History and Theory, Narrative and Communication, Artificial Intelligence, Acoustics Studies, and so on. The wide range of electives allows students to receive a more all-rounded education, which would subsequently position them more advantageously, when entering a diverse range of careers. RMIT University states that the graduates of their Game Design and Programming degrees will be well positioned to work in the games industry, or more generally, in the creative and computer graphics industries. Many graduates of Games Graphics Design and Digital Art have successfully start-up their own companies, or embarked in a variety of artistic careers. Graduates of Games Graphics Programming, on the other hand, were able to enter the general IT industry. Therefore, if you have a keen interest in electronic games, and possess some basic computing and animation skills, then perhaps you would like to consider furthering your studies in the area of your passion â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Games Design. Goodness! The weather seems to be letting up and it looks like a good time to get in the sun and have some fun! Worried you’ll suffer the repercussions of spending a day basking in the sun? Worry not! Here’s some information on how to protect your skin so you’d end up with a sun-kissed glow, and not a lobster-red sheen.
Wear Sunscreen. Sunscreen protects the skin by absorbing, blocking or scattering UV radiation. The best sunscreens are those which effectively blocks UV rays, thus protecting your skin. It is best to apply sunscreen 30mins before exposure to the sun. So, what is this SPF everyone’s talking about? Shop for sunscreen and you will find yourself swimming among those three letters. SPF, also known as Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of UVB protection. The numeric value you see on bottles indicate how long you are able to stay in the sun before you start experiencing sunburn.
Fake it. Want to glow with sun-kissed goodness yet forgo the risk of sunburn? Well, there are a wide range of tanning beds, tanning spray treatments and sunless self-tanning options ranging from gels to pills available for those with sensitive skin. To find out the best option for you, consult a tanning professional or a dermatologist. Don’t suffer pain and flaking skin ever again! Just fake it!
For example, if you usually take 10 minutes to burn in sun exposure, SPF 15 sunscreen will allow you to stay out in the sun 15 times longer, delaying sunburn for a period of up to 150 minutes. Less is more! For us Asians, an SPF of 15 is sufficient. For fair-skinned Caucasians who sunburn easily, SPF 30 is deemed suitable. However, many consumers have the misconception that better sun protection comes with higher SPF. In fact, higher SPF may cause irritation among people with sensitive skin. For maximum protection, it is best to get a sunscreen which offer both UVA and UVB protection. Burnt-out! Make aloe and cocoa butter your best friends when you get a sunburn. Aloe has a soothing effect on skin, while cocoa butter replenishes moisture, preventing peeling after sun damage. Just make sure not to exfoliate or pick on flaking skin, but leave it to heal perhaps with the help of some hydrocortisone cream which you have placed in the fridge.

As a fresh graduate, he decided to sweep graves as a way of earning a quick buck. Would he do it again, given a second chance? Find out more about his time and eerie experiences walking among the dead. By: Vanessa Choo
1) So Daniel, how did this all come about? A church friend of mine owns a plot of land near Mandai Road, which was previously passed on from his grandfather to father, and now to my friend who is the eldest son. There are 200-300 graves to take care of on that plot of land. There is a need to tend to the graves all year round. However, my friend holds a full time job and for him to tidy up the graves during the weekend was too much of a burden. He needed someone to help him out, and quickly approached me knowing I was fresh out of school and wanted to earn a few quick bucks. 2) What made you agree to this job? There are three reasons: First, it pays well. Secondly, I thought it would be fun to work at a cemetery, as it is of those things that you would just like to try out once in life - just once. And lastly, I thought it would give me an edge when potential employers review my resume and see that I used to be a cemetery care-taker. 3) How long have you been doing this for? About a month or two. I worked mostly on weekends because my friend would be there with me. I could work on weekdays, but that would also mean I’d be in the cemetery alone! 4) Tell us what’s the hardest part of this job? Working under the sun for a few hours at one go. My hours are limited by the amount of daylight as most people are reluctant to work in the cemetery at night for obvious reasons. Therefore, regardless of how hot the day was, I’d have to slog on. To minimize customer complaint, we were even discouraged from wearing shades to ensure that no stray grass escaped our sight. 5) Have you any eerie experiences so far? The silence at the cemetery was really hard to get used to. I remember working alone on a huge grave at the bottom of a hill when I suddenly heard the sound of someone stepping on sticks. At first, I thought that it was merely falling branches, but the sound persisted and I was about to lose my mind! Then, my friend appeared from the top of the hill and told me there was an alternate route to the cemetery. I was totally freaking out. 6) So what are your plans for the future? Definitely furthering my studies, if I could, I would like to study forever and even get paid for it! Of course, I hope to get a job where my passion lies in, which is cycling. I’d love to set-up my own bike shop someday. 7) Any last words you’d like to share with your fellow RP grads? In everything, do your best! This is to save on regrets in the future!
