Open House 2009 By Poh Yu Seung Senior Executive Office of Student and Graduate Affairs, Republic Polytechnic

D

uring the RP Open House held on 7 and 10 January 2009, RP had put up her best front in an attempt to attract more candidates to join her courses. Among the VIPs who were invited to grace the event include Chairman of our Board of Governors, Mr Lee Hsien Yang. This time round, the Open House had a more streamlined flow of the visitors, allowing closer interaction between visitors and the staff and student population. This took the form of four sections carved out within the polytechnic. They were South Agora, Centres’ Alley, Schools and Final Year Projects showcase. There were also fringe activities at the Sports Complex and the Adventure Learning Centre as well. The Hip Hop competition on Saturday was also one of the big attractions, creating much oohs and ahhs from the audience. It was an open competition, with participants coming from various schools and age groups. Outside the polytechnic, an island wide marketing blitz was undertaken together with the other polytechnics in the JAE. RP also had event banners put up throughout Woodlands, inviting Woodlands residents to come and join in the events! On D-day itself, thousands of visitors walked through the doors of our polytechnic. These were a combination of walk-in visitors who found their own way here, while a large portion were students from other secondary schools that had been sent here by their schools to view the exhibits. Our staff and students took great pride in engaging the visitors in games and also demonstrating many of the FYPs that were on display. In the end, we had met our objectives of having an Open House event, so as to best show off the programmes that the polytechnic has to offer.

SAS Graduates at RP Open House “It has been three years since I graduated from RP. As a student of the Pioneer batch, it is always great to go back home to visit our facilitators and co-workers who have seen our growth in RP. RP Open House 2009 has been one of the best Open Houses that I have ever attended and participated. At the same time, we, graduates, felt a sense of belonging and had lots of fun with our juniors and facilitators. Through the guided tours provided by our SAS facilitators, we discovered interesting parts of the new Woodlands campus, which Tanglin campus did not have. This is a place that we will never forget!” By Tan Jian Chye, Sam Undergraduate (Life Science Major), National University of Singapore

he experience in Chingay Parade 2009 on 30 and 31 January was one of the most memorable moments for members of RP’s Dragon Dance and Lion Dance Cultural Troupe. Chingay Parade 2009 Preview was held on the 30th while the actual parade was held on the 31st. Republic Polytechnic was one of the troupes performing in the Grand Opening item which comprised of 6 giant flags, 32 phoenixes and 4 dragons. Our members were carrying two gigantic, 10-metre tall flags, one of which bore the magnificent RP logo. As we performed right at the main stage area at City Hall, the RP logo was clearly visible for the thousands of audience present, from all angles. Among the audience was President S R Nathan and Senior Ministers of the Cabinet. The crowd cheered as our members performed incredible stunts of balancing the flags on different parts of the body such as the forehead, shoulders, arms, stomachs and even on the jaw. Our performance was also shown on national television the next day as MediaCorp screened the delayed telecast of Chingay Parade 2009. We are proud to report that we

displayed the gigantic flags well not only in front of the main performance area at City Hall but also throughout the entire parade route to the Singapore Flyer. The stunning performance was encouraged by cheers from the crowd shouting, “RP! RP! RP!” All the hard work we put in for the past six months training and preparing just for these 2 nights was well worth it! The troupe would like to thank the Office of Student and Graduate Affairs (OSG) for supporting the troupe to participate in this event. More importantly, all the folks at The Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC) for believing in us and helping us to achieve this major milestone for the troupe and the school. What a splendid performance by all active current and alumni members of the troupe at Chingay 2009! The troupe would like to wish everyone a Happy and Auspicious Year of the Ox in 2009! The team lead by IG Advisor James Chow (CCC) consists of Tay Jian Sheng (Alumni, Class of 2007), Willie Kee Meng Hui (Alumni, Class of 2008), Lau Zhen Wen Adrian (Alumni, Class of 2008), Wang Weiyuan (Alumni, Class of 2008),

Everyone was excited… 13 December 2008, The day we welcomed our SEG graduates. An inaugural event held for the SEG graduates At the East Coast Park. The time was around 5pm as we greeted our first guest. One after another they arrived, as we welcomed them back. Soon the place was crowded. The experience was unbelievably fun as we sat and chatted with friends from the same school as ours whom we had not seen since their graduation. Then, I realized how much I missed them. We mingled, we joked, and we laughed. The aroma of the barbequed food filled the air. The food was aplenty and the drink was flowing. One of the most memorable moments was the celebratory toast to all SEG-ians Whose birthdays were in the month of December. Laughter could be heard from afar Hi was exchanged Bye was rarely heard But as night slowly darkened People started giving kisses, Hugs and promises And they took a step backward With smiles on their faces As they bided farewell We shall meet again …

Assistant Director (Industry Engagement) Tan Keng Chuan reasoned RP’s strong connectivity with career partners as the key differentiating factor. “Apart from engaging employers continuously to offer job opportunities to RP graduates, we regularly invites companies to conduct career talks and road shows on campus. These activities help employers brand their companies before the students graduate. This helps employers to keep a look out for potential employees,” he said. This strategy has helped increase the number of participating companies at the annual career fair. In four years since its inception, this year’s Career Fair has 56 participating companies.

Indeed, this career service brings out together potential employers and student career-related value proposition. Over 60 per cent of the graduating cohort found the annual RP Career Fair useful in securing their first employment and kickstarting their career.

what’s happening

The RP Career Fair 2009 was held on 15 January, a week after RP’s Open House. The Organising Chairperson for this Fair, Mr Sundar W, said, “In the context of today’s economic situation, graduates should adequately prepare themselves for early employer engagement to maximise their job securing opportunities. Our graduates have and should continue to capitalise on the Career preparatory services and resources offered by the Student Career Centre to further their employment opportunities in a difficult and uncertain year ahead.”

The Office of Industry and Career Services (OIC) also engages students via the Student Career Centre. OIC offers value added career-related services such as workshops on interviewing skills, resume writing, and career planning. There is a

resource centre situated in the Library for students to access the facilities easily.

ith Singapore’s growth forecast slashed for a second time in January 2009 and a plunging demand for its exports, the Trade and Industry Ministry said Singapore’s gross domestic product is expected to contract between two per cent and five per cent this year. This has a direct implication to the number of jobs availability.

This is 3.5 times more than the first Fair. The number of career talks this year had doubled too. RP also invites companies to post jobs on its online portal.

The primary role of the diet is to provide sufficient energy and nutrients to meet an individual’s nutritional requirements. There is now increasing scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that some foods and food components have beneficial physiological and psychological effects over and above the provision of basic nutrition. As a result, consumers are increasingly interested in the health benefits of foods and the roles that are played by health enhancing compounds contained in many foods. In response to this growing market need, food manufacturers are showing great interest to enhance the “functional” component in food products, which have been referred to as functional foods. To meet the industry demand in Singapore for functional foods, since 2006, the School of Applied Science at Republic Polytechnic had collaborated with local Small Medium Enterprise (SME) food companies to develop functional foods such as omega-3 mango ice cream and cranberry brownies.

foods containing ingredients that aid specific bodily functions in addition to their basic intrinsic nutritional value. The definition of functional foods has given rise to the argument that if one were simply to define functional foods as foods containing ingredients that are beneficial to human health, then any whole food products including fruit, vegetables, soya, whole grains and milk would be considered functional foods. The challenge is in the differentiation of foods which inherently contain healthy compounds from those that have had their basic nutritional value boosted by the addition of specific compounds which are believed to support health and wellness. It has been argued that the different definitions of functional food are merely for descriptive purposes or for marketing and promotion of these foods. The consensus is that whatever definition it takes, it is important to stick to a single meaning not only for future regulation of these foods, but for common understanding of the meaning of this category of foods.

It is interesting to note that the The term “functional foods” was principle behind the development of first introduced in Japan in the mid- functional foods was espoused nearly 1980s and represents processed 2,500 years ago by Hippocrates, who

wrote “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. Yet, the concept of functional foods is relatively new to many and is considered a revolution to some. In medieval Europe, the first line of health defence for a middleclass family was considered the cook, though the tradition became lost as the West became industrialized, while countries such as Japan and China have long considered certain foods to be beneficial to health. There are also other important aspects of investing to consider, such as understanding the need to diversify and have asset allocation in your portfolio. he Release dREam managed to catch up with our STA graduate Timothy J Alvin. Although he is currently drafted into the army, Timothy managed to find the time to plan and shoot a short movie titled ‘The Release’. Tell us how you got into movie making? I’m now 21 years old, formerly a resident artiste in The Fun Stage and publicist in Little Red Shop. Wrote, directed and toured a couple of shows in Singapore. I teach drama in secondary schools and CCs as well. In 2007, I started my own firm, ‘Engage Playhouse’,which does television commercials and corporate videos. ‘The Release’ is the first production. I had also advised on the production of two other films as well, ‘ProsperoVille’ and ‘The Summer of Impermanance’. Another movie that I had previously directed, ‘The Rice Bowl’, got into Storyboard 08, Faber Film Fest. Starring Serene Chen and Louis Fong, the film was completed in five days. It was a 32-minute film with two separate casts - shooting in 1970s and 2008. What inspired you to do ‘The Release’? This is based on a true story of a mother and son who are both handicapped. Mother is blind and in a wheelchair. Son is quadriplegic. As the son grew up, he became very inward looking and neglected his mother’s needs. Son’s girlfriend (played by Mediacorp actress, Priscilla Chan) coaxed the son into abandoning the mom. And the audience is led into believing he will…This movie is a 45 minute-drama based on a real life story. Full section of 30 minutes was shot in one house, stressing the mother’s pain of living in one house in a blind condition. Mainly in Hokkien with sprinkling of English and Mandarin language, the film depicted a strong use of meta acting techniques before any moves are made by the actors and actresses. I am planning to submit to Singapore International Film Fest and overseas judging. More details of the screening schedule can be found at www.thereleasemovie.com

How did you get the funding? Society for the Physically Disabled and the Red Cross are supporting this movie. With this, there were many title sponsors such as Nike, Crocodile, MAC & Nautica. It took us weeks to get our sponsors on board. As this is our second film, we managed to find Jae (a Year 2 student in RP) and she funded the movie as well. With the support of the artistes, we managed to clinch the sponsors. Just as well because the production costs ran into six digits! Why are you doing this? I love films and hold my own playhouse movie screenings every month. I gather movie reviewers to come together, watch a movie and exchange critiques. Personally crazy about films, watching almost 6 movies a week, there are always at least two movie DVDs in my bag at all times! What do you hope the audience will feel when they leave the cinema? I like to leave the audience hanging… “A powerful film doesn’t just move you because you feel for the character, but that you see part of the character in you.” How long did it take you to film this? Took approximately four months to plan and less than two weeks to film. Script was written in full Hokkien. My assistant director is from Mediacorp and scriptwriter is a full time writer for drama in Mediacorp. What are you interested to work on next time? Next genre = a love story… I find Singaporeans too busy to be looking into love stories, so I want to look into these. “One Love Two Many”, a comedy romance. What are some messages you would like to share with other RP graduates? You can fail in school, but you can’t fail outside” and from my work, I learnt that you need to get everything in black and white. Where can readers find out more about ‘The Release’? Site for the film is www.thereleasemovie.com, while my personal blog is www.thatartoflosingmyself.blogspot.com That brings us to the end of the interview, good luck for the movie launch! Thank you as well, cheers!
