What better way to celebrate a new batch of graduates than with a fresh issue of your graduate’s newsletter! In this issue, we have given the publication a slight facelift, and we’re really hoping it sits well with you. If the news hasn’t reached you yet, there has been a wide array of activities going on in RP during the past two months. Never one to let you down, dREam was there to cover these events. Of those more relevant to graduates like you, were the Educational Fair and Career Fair. Both fairs were held at the RP campus and received a strong response. Find out more in What’s H@ppening (pg 3)! In addition, there was lots of buzz going around the Agora when the Buzzer Bazaar was held in January. Tap, tap, tap – was what people did to make their purchases in RP’s very first cashless bazaar where transactions were carried out using the EZ-link system. Learn more about the interesting activities which went on during the bazaar, including the mad sales towards the end of the event (What’s H@ppening, pg 2).

Vanessa Choo
There has been a new addition to the mad-house family of Graduate Services - She’s young, she’s fun, she loves social dancing… Please bring in Vanessa! The baby of the bunch claims she loves sharing a hearty laugh and responds well to bright colors – which may be the reason behind her –ahem- colorful personality. Vanessa also enjoys spinning around the dance floor, so if you are looking for a partner in ballroom
or Latin dancing, you’d know who to approach. Interests aside, Vanessa was elected as a Students’ Counsellor during her schooling days and thoroughly enjoyed her time as a student leader. Through her experience, she learnt the importance of being both a good team player, as well as a responsible leader. Vanessa is particularly passionate about building team spirit and hopes to foster a strong bond between graduates and strengthen their relationship with RP. She also wants to contribute to building the profile of Graduate Services, as Vanessa believes that all of us at RP will be your lifelong friend and companion in your journey ahead. “I always respond to someone in need of a helping hand.” she said. So now you know who to look for when you need help. Who knows, she might even throw in a few dance classes on the side! dREam·01
Buzz Off!
By Vanessa Choo
So, what exactly was all the buzz around the Republic Polytechnic campus about? Well, Republic Polytechnic recently launched its very own Buzzer Bazaar, the first cashless bazaar using EZ-link as the sole mode of payment, and it’s got everyone talking. Find out more, as Vanessa Choo reports. Contribution by: Christopher Cheah
So now that you have graduated, which route do you take? Some of you may have the luxury of serving our nation, but what about the rest of us? There were two recent events held in RP which may just spur your decision.
Education Fair 2007 @ RP The two-day long event, held on the 18th and 19th January 2007, was comfortably situated in the Agora where it caught the attention of large crowds consisting of both students and staff passing by. The Buzzer Bazaar was initiated by OSG and organised by a group of student representatives from different Clubs/Schools in RP. This was tied in together with our adopted charity, the Sunlove Project, where a portion of proceeds went to the Sunlove Marsiling home. Joining in the event were over 20 elderly guests who thoroughly enjoyed the various performances put up by our students. In fact, they partook in kampong games, organized by a game stall set up by our own graduates, and had a real ball of a time!
system was brought into the crowds for people to tap their card and donate to charity, while showing their support for a particular act.
Heading the impressive line-up of performers was the Percussion Ensemble, which kicked-off the event to a resounding start. They were among other Create IGs, such as Silat, Republic Rhapsody, EMP, Jammerz Arena, Yoyo performance, Modern Dance, Drama, and Magic IG, all of whom thoroughly entertained the crowds throughout the two-day event. Following the likes of basking, the EZ-link
The Buzzer Bazaar ended off on a high note with stall holders slashing their prices for the “Closing Sale” on the last day of the bazaar. This was very well received by their fellow peers, garnering much lively support as they closed their last sales for the event.
On the more business end of things, was the stalls set-up by entrepreneurial students from various clubs. They sold items from snack food, to IT products, to ladies’ clothing and accessories, and even services such as laptop cleaning! The response to all the stalls was very good, in particular, the food stalls, as everyone was delighted to snack on some chocolate fondue for a sweet treat or have some ice cream to cool off the hot weather.
On 17th Jan, education providers and agents visited Republic Polytechnic to promote higher education opportunities to our students. This included the local institutions such as National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), and UniSIM, as well as distance-learning providers such as James Cook University (JCU) and University of New South Wales (Asia) (UNSW Asia). Education referral agents like the British Council and IDP Australia were also present at the fair. There was a warm response to the event held in the library at Pharos Gallery. Countless enquiries were targeted at the local institutions as many of our graduates wanted to remain closer to home while pursuing higher education. One of RP’s graduates, Ms Ye Jia Ling, has recently joined SMU studying Information Systems. She’s enjoying herself so much in University, she’s even come back to promote SMU to her juniors and peers! Ms Ye revealed that she received 2 modules worth of advanced standing, and hopes to complete her four year degree in as short as three and a half years, by overloading her timetable!
On the other hand, there were still the adventurous few who enquired about studying in the UK and Australia. Mr Adrian Kong, Education Counsellor with IDP Australia, noted that with RP’s PBL education system, many of our graduates were able to successfully obtain half to one year’s advanced standing with most Australian universities based on academic merit. If fact, he noted an increased interest from RP graduates in institutions such as University of Queensland, Curtin University, University of Western Australia, Monash University, and so on. He noted that more popular areas of interest included the health sciences, engineering and business studies. For students who wanted to enjoy the best of both worlds, there was UNSW Asia! Imagine an Australian university education on our local shores. The local representative, Ms Sharon Tan, pointed out that UNSW Asia has started their undergraduate courses and will be moving to their modern, state-of-the-art campus at Changi in 2009! UNSW has always been strong in the area of Engineering, and it was no wonder that many of our SEG students approached them for more information on entry requirements. Foreign and local institutions together make tons of universities to choose from, and even more degree programs to sift through! So what are you waiting for? To make a more informed choice, just approach our friendly staff at Graduate Services, or the Student Career Center for help.

Class of 2003
Our RP students were spoilt for choice at the Career Fair organized by Office of Industry & Career Services (OIC) as over 30 companies turned up for the two-day long event in the hopes of meeting potential employees amongst our students. There were over 4000 different job opportunities available for our students, which were warmly responded with over 2500 applications. In fact, some employers were so enthusiastic about our students, that they interviewed them on-campus at different designated interview corners. This enthusiastic participation was a strong indication of a booming economy as well as the keen interest to employ RP graduates. The Senior Director of Office of Student and Graduate Affairs, Mr. Ang Keng Loo, was guest-of-honor and kicked-off the event with a resounding motivational speech. Graduate Services (GS) also took part in the event, sharing our service offerings and Club Republic incentives with current students, as well as promoting the up-and-coming farewell event for third year students, Ancien Adieus (10th March 2007). The response was good, and GS eagerly looks forward to seeing many of our graduating students then. Two of our graduates, Liu Wei and Angie Lim, even volunteered to share their working experiences after graduating on iRadio, a specially tailored program for Career Fair 2007, which was broadcasted, live throughout the campus. Liu Wei is a maintenance technician with Seagate and mentioned that the problem-based learning (PBL) environment in RP helping him greatly as he entered the working society. He emphasized that having to solve one problem a day trained him to have the proper mindset to deal with real work situations which required a lot of thinking on-the-spot.
Our other graduate, Angie Lim, is currently working as an academic associate with the School of Applied Science in RP. She undertook the Integrated Program, which allowed her to finish her bachelor’s degree in Monash University (Melbourne, Australia), within one year! Angie is now back in Singapore with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, and is facilitating year one classes. She decided on facilitating as she really enjoys interacting with students and sharing her knowledge. Although thankful for the opportunity to travel and study in Australia, Angie wishes she had a break before continuing with her university degree as it was non-stop studying for her and very tiring. Fortunately, Angie survived and is even looking forward to doing a Master’s Degree in the National University of Singapore in the near future. It was an eventful two days which saw many of our graduating cohort gain awareness in the types of jobs available to them upon graduation. For those who were undecided on which career path to take, the OIC had a career counselor at hand to dish out valuable advice, which enlightened many inquisitive minds. Career Fair 2007 has been very successful, and as a result, RP has high hopes of seeing many of our graduates embark on meaningful and fulfilling careers soon after they graduate. We hope that these graduates will also actively return to RP to share their experiences of the working work with their juniors so as to strengthen the RP spirit.
A Night to Remember Most described it as warm and joyous, some were lost for words. But for all, this gathering of old friends was, in fact, more than just warm and fuzzy, as Victor Darmawan reports. The pre-Christmas evening of 16 December 2006 started on a slow note as more than 200 graduates gradually arrived at Republic Polytechnic Centre (RPC). Many pleased exclamations could be heard, along with warm hugs and handshakes exchanged, as graduates met up with old classmates and friends. Soon, the whole venue was abuzz with the busy chattering of Republicans catching up with each other. The program started proper with the Investiture ceremony of Club Republic’s first Alumni Advisory Committee (AAC), as well as the opening of the Heritage Room and Graduates’ Lounge. It was a simple ceremony, marked by the passing of candle light followed by a walk through of the rooms. The memorable evening was graced by Mr. Sean Tay, Director of Student & Graduate Affairs, who remarked that he was pleased to see so many familiar faces from the Tanglin days. This day also marked the beginning of Club Republic, the Alumni Club for Republic Polytechnic. The AAC,
despite the daunting task ahead of them, are committed to do their best to serve their fellow alumni in their best interests. Graduates were also handed their login IDs and password for the Graduate Portal, an online portal for graduates to keep in touch with RP. An online networking system and a resume generator are few of the features available for the graduates to network while, constant updates of upcoming graduate and school events will ensure graduates are never left behind in terms of the latest happening in RP. The graduates were kept busy amidst the chatting and catching up with each other with the preview of the Graduates’ Lounge, while the Xbox console had many hooked on the television set. A familiar face with the Graduates, Alexander Sarsito played host for the evening and took control of the stage. He had hidden under his sleeves a swath of games and prizes to be given out which, of course, he did not intend to give out for ‘free’. Soon enough, he won the crowd over and, almost as if he had them in the palms of his hands, cajoled them into dancing and modeling for goodies, just to mention a few. There was even a graduate who was so distressed that he begged to be let off the stage. Lastly, the event wrapped up with a Christmas gift exchange, with the biggest gift being the smiles left on the faces of the graduates as the magical evening came to an end.

His motto in life is “Attitude is everything” and it definitely shows. Vincent has recently enrolled in SMU and is having a ball of a time. In fact, he describes it as a turning point in his life. He wishes to contribute toward RP by sharing his university experiences with his peers so as to cushion their transition. Vincent is also very proactive, as he hopes to score several internships during his stint in SMU in order to identify niche areas and build up a network for his future empire. His advice for his fellow graduates? “Run faster or you’ll be eaten up!”
Malcolm is very proud to be part of the first batch of graduates from RP, and he owes this pride to his unique curriculum and good presentation skills. He believes that if one was able to cope well in RP, they’d have no qualms coping with the working world. Working cordially with different walks of people has also trained Malcolm to be more patient and resourceful. He noted, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can always adjust my sails to reach my destination.” Well said.

Erushi Menik Ranasinghe Dip Industrial and Systems Engineering Administrative Associate, Republic Polytechnic Erushi is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in International Supply Chain Management via distance learning with Curtin University. As part of her curriculum, Erushi was required to complete some modules in Perth, Australia, which she claims to be one of the most exciting times of her life. Well, that, and the time when she got to see fellow graduates pole dance on stage. This girl is very proud of RP and mentions that it is an honor to be part of the pioneer batch of students who learnt to “do things differently”. “For me, RP represents refined education. I’m glad to be part of it.”, she says. There’s the RP spirit for you!
In three words, Le Tze described his Ancien Reunion experience as “Glam, Glitz, and Glitter”. Those very words came from a person who would choose to be the color orange from the rainbow, as it represents creativity. Creative, we’re not sure, but cheeky? Definitely! Beware, as Le Tze told us he is able to pinch people with his toes! But he’s still very grounded as he believes all of us should make a living by what we get, and make a life by what we give. Oh, and being one to settle down, Le Tze is already making plans to marry his beloved girlfriend someday!
Lai Hock Heng Tommy Dip Biomedical Science SAF This guy had a lot fun catching up with his fellow course mates, and was glad they turned up for the reunion without much persuasion. This quirky SAF member claims that he is able to hear other people’s conversations while asleep. Tommy says that when he hears someone asking a question while napping, he would actually wake up and answer them before dozing off again. Quite scary, and a stark contrast to the color of the rainbow he’d like to be. “Blue, because this color is cool, refreshing, and calms a person!” Erm, yeah right!
Yan Xiang had a real exciting time catching up with old mates during the reunion. He was happy to see familiar faces, and find out what’s been happening to everyone since graduation. The change from civilian to serviceman was a large one for Yan Xiang, as he had to come face-to-face with real world situations, not to be taught in the classroom. Despite this enriching experience external to RP, he has not forgotten his roots. He hopes to see his juniors and peers strive to be more proactive and take part in more poly-wide activities. He believes this is how Republicans would enjoy a good time while building strong bonds with their Alma matar.
Poor Ariff nearly lost his masculinity during Ancien Reunion. He was made to release his inner Zoolander in him and catwalk in front of all of his peers, as Ariff jovially recalls. His time in RP has resulted in an innovative, industry-ready individual ready to face the world. In his own words, “Learn and master the art of people management in the workforce.” This is what he believes to be the key to success. This Zoolander wannabe is also in love with the new Graduates’ Lounge and wants to hang out there often! But Ariff is not all jokes as he left us with his wise life motto: Expect nothing except for expectations that are beyond your own.
Ariff B Abdul Aziz Dip Biomedical Science SAF Driver Pang Hui Min Dip Industrial and Systems Engineering National University of Singapore Undergrad
Now, there seems to be some gender confusion going on among our grads, as Hui Min mentioned to us that she’s actually a man in disguise! But before you fall over, she’s simply referring to the “violent” way she plays in sport. Hui Min is known to be enthusiastic and owes her good grades to active participation in class. In fact, she is currently pursuing a degree in Project and Facilities Management with NUS. Not only is she stoked to enter university, she’s also having a swell time at her hostel, the Kent Ridge Hall. The one thing we should all learn from Hui Min is to always give our best and never regret the things we do!

There are several options for diploma holders hoping to embark on a career with AVA. The position of Agri-Food and Veterinary Officer (Technical) Grade VI is available for a graduate holding a diploma in the area of applied science. The job would require one to assist in the areas of inspection of food factories and processing plants, conduct laboratory tests (in animal and plant health, or post-harvest technology), provide aid in animal welfare, as well as manage Agrotechnological Parks and farms.
By Vanessa Choo
Alternatively, graduates may also look to apply for Management Executive (ME) positions with the AVA, upon the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the areas of Agriculture, Animal Science, Biotechnology, Food Sciences, Zoology, and so on. A science-based ME will look after areas involving food safety, technology development, various welfare programs, and R&D activities pertaining to relevant industries.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) was established in 2000 to govern the supply of safe food to the community, ensure the health of plants and animals, as well as to facilitate national agri-trade procedures. This is done through AVA’s three main sectors, namely the Food Sector, the Animals & Pets sector, and the Agriculture & Fisheries.
For graduates who wish to pursue a degree in areas other than science, one may still apply to the AVA as an ME for a generalist position. Depending on your training, the degree holder could be assigned one of the following areas of work – corporate services, policy and corporate communications, human resource, or auditing.
Food safety is ensured by the AVA through its rigorous laboratory testing and stringent legal policies. A close relationship is maintained between the AVA and other national authorities to ensure that proper surveillance programs and accreditation is awarded to food manufacturers or providers. In addition, the AVA looks into new areas for food importation to ensure an adequate supply of food for the nation.
The AVA believes in recruiting graduates who are committed to learn and innovate, hence, they insist on providing a conducive, nurturing workplace to capture this talent. In addition, the AVA offers a competitive rewards and benefits program, as well as good career development support to their staff.
The AVA also takes care of public health through the prevention and elimination of exotic plant and animal diseases. This is done by enforcing strict policies on importation as well as providing a range of diagnostic services to identify and treat these diseases. Furthermore, the AVA actively safeguards against animal cruelty through the enforcement of strict regulations and proper public education.
Then there was an indecent proposal...
