Editor’s note Season’s Greetings! Oh yes, it’s that time of the year again! Got that fuzzy feeling yet? As the Christmas lights come up and we get into the mood of giving, we realise that one whole year has passed by. As we reflect on the year 2016, we would find that it was filled with joyous occasions, sad moments, as well as visions of hope. We hope everyone has achieved what they set out to achieve the past year, and that the time has been fruitfully spent. Most of all, we certainly hope that all of you spend a lovely Christmas with your family. While we are having fun and enjoying the holiday season, there are about 45% of our student population who require some form of financial assistance. In the spirit of giving, we would highly encourage you to contribute to RP’s Needy Student Fund, initiated by Republic Polytechnic (RP) to help students from low-income families to tide over financial difficulties or unprecedented crises. Every dollar counts. If you wish to make a difference in our students’ lives, please write to us @ help-graduate@rp.edu.sg. From all of us at dREam, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May 207 bring new aspirations and better fortunes for us all.

Reflections 2016: Perspective through Layers Celebrating a decade of bridging the arts to our communities. Written by Zainulrahman Bin Motalif (Yr 3, SOH [DCXB])
After a few workshops with renowned storyteller, Roger Jenkins, the students from Drama IG: Operation Theatre and Indian Cultural Group, put up the performance with stories from Roger and their own pieces.
This year’s MUSE VIII featured Modern Dance, Tarian, Hip Hop, Capoeira and guest performers, ITE College West Korean Dance Wave.
The spectacular lighting was designed by own in-house designers.
Jammerz Arena, Replug and Rhapsody shared the stage with ShiLi & Adi as well as the Replug Alumni Duo.
Republic Polytechnic’s The Republic Cultural Centre celebrates the 10th year of the Reflections Arts Festival, where for 3 weeks, RP turns into a melting pot of different cultures. This annual event promoting RP’s arts vibrancy and collaborations, showcasing home grown talents in the various fields of music, visual arts, drama and dance. A decade later from its humble beginnings, Reflections Arts Festival has grown into a true full-scale festival, rising to national standards with its wide facet of offerings, from fringe events to mega performances. This year, RP has adopted the theme of “Layers” – with the aim to relate to the arts with different Perspectives, different Presentations through the mix of genres as well as to Explore and reaffirm the growth they have achieved in each of these art forms. This year’s festival revolves around 9 key performances while also being supplemented by a number of workshops, workouts and exhibitions. The festival commenced with a grand display of zest from the various IGs during the Opening Launch. It laid a wonderful start and exemplified this year’s theme “Layers”. Another wonderful collaboration was “An Evening of Music, Fun & Friends III”, a musical showcase by Jammerz
Arena, Replug and Rhapsody. Tackling the theme of Cole Porter, the students reinvented the songs from the well-renowned songwriter. The audience were also treated to outstanding performances from guest band, ShiLi & Adi, as well as RP Alumni, Khadijah and Syahmi. The students of Republic Polytechnic are the keystone for the festivals, not only do they perform, but they also develop and coordinate the different aspects. Once such student is Nur Arianty Bte Djonaede, who was involved in the MUSE VIII committee as an Assistant Student Producer. “I never thought that producing MUSE VIII would be much more than just getting performers to perform. It was a collaborative effort by the show committee, performers and the advisors who guided us along the way. I learnt to be adaptable to changes and to troubleshoot every little detail that we planned as precaution“, she said. Another key player behind this festival is Mr Muhd Farhan Khamis, a RP Engie Staff. He has worked extensively on similar projects in the past and have used his experiences to induce the lighting elements as one of the Lighting Designers for MUSE VIII. Working together with Mr Erwan Bin Rahim, the duo played key roles in the show where many audiences gave

rave reviews for the creative and top-notch lighting designs. “Throughout our time in TRCC, MUSE VIII is by far the best that we have created as we were given more freedom to be more bold and creative. We are greatly satisfied and humbled with our work and could really feel the works of the students through our lighting designs.” Said Mr Farhan. Reflections Arts Festival has always served to bridge the gap of the arts and our communities. After a decade, one can only wonder what the festival still has in store for us all. “While we have had collaborations with other arts groups in the community, my hope is that in the next 10 years, there would be a much deeper involvement with students in the overall process such as curation and programming. Another hope of mine is to have better outreach of the festival to the community, to new groups of people who were deprived or not given a chance of enjoying high quality of arts“, said Mr Ganesh Kalyanam, Director for the Office of Student and Graduate Affairs and the Festival Director for Reflections Arts Festival. We look forward to another wonderful decade of community arts promotions from Reflections Arts Festival and see you at the Festival in October 2017. 07

A Wonderful #NotSoWonderland Flame Awards 2016
The zest and passion of the CREATE students coming together to make each year a success is what makes the flame burn brighter for Flame Awards. Flame Awards is an annual award ceremony that is added with a burst of excitement to appreciate the creative talents of Republic Polytechnic. From current students to alumni and staff, Flame Awards is a night that acknowledges the effort, achievements and academic excellence of CREATE members. "Student engagement has been great, we were involved from IGs like EMP, Photo and Film IG. There is a common misconception about Flame Awards only being from CREATE. However, it is a collaboration with STA and SMC as well. These clubs contribute to the arts culture in RP.” Said Jeremy Leow, Producer and Production Coordinator for Flame Awards 2016. There were many interesting things to see at this year’s #NotSoWonderland. Be it the décor outside or the main ceremony itself in the Theatre at TRCC. The creativity from the CREATE IGs was on exhibit with the décor, which included Art.titude IG, Jammerz Arena, Campus Arts Productions, Silat IG and Drama IG. Your journey starts at the entrance where one would walk through a life-size Rabbit Hole. After the Hall of Doors, you’ll enter the Queen’s Market filled with stalls as well as carnival games such as “Mad Hatter’s Hat Toss”.
A main feature was the Hall of Doors which brought you to the Queen’s Castle, just like in the movie
The Bustling Queen’s Market
All the décor were hand-made, including the 2,000 roses on display
Our Principal, Mr Yeo Li Pheow took a selfie with one of our recipients who was dressed as Elmo.
The show inside was yet another show on its own, with performances by Rhapsody, Replug and Hip Hop, all guests were greatly entertained. The theme also brought an interesting twist to an otherwise solemn ceremony, where most awardees were also dressed to the theme.
Hip Hop IG won not one, but two awards: CREATE Outstanding Group for dance and CREATE Group of the Year.
Everyone gave their best shot and dressed to the occasion
RP Wind Symphony are the first- time winners for the Outstanding Group for the Music cluster with their numerous achievements for the year.
A Unique Spin: DJs from EMP kept the hype going for the crowd
A total of 130 Individual Awards were given out, spread across the Outstanding Student Award, Student Merit Award, Outstanding Alumni Award and the CREATE Arts Distinction Award. The Group Awards were awarded to CREATE Groups for the Most Improved Group, Outstanding Group for each cluster – P.A.C.T, Music and Dance and the Group of the Year. Nur Arianty Bte Djonaede, current Hip Hop President was ecstatic at the news - “It was such a pleasant surprise! I never really looked at winning anything when SGC gets involved in many CREATE events because our purpose was to bond and to mix with other CREATE IGS.” After which the event ended with a final performance and the Best Dressed segment before we concluded the formalities. Post show activities included a dinner reception, the Flamingo’s Croquet - a game which mix of floorball and hockey, the Queen’s Dungeon - which was Flame Awards’ edition of Haunted House; and lastly the after party with DJs from EMP spinning. Arissa Ardianty Bte Mohd Said has been the student producer of Flame Awards for 3 consecutive years, “this year was a twist as our concept was inclining more towards a musical, which we have never done before. We made it happen despite the hiccups we definitely overcame our challenges and it was an amazing feeling.” According to her, there were lots of learning opportunities from programming and production. “I feel honoured to be in a position to be able to work with students that get out of their comfort zone to create an amazing show for their own peers.”, said Arissa. 10
With the creative edge of our CREATE Club, we are already anticipating the theme for Flame Awards 2017!
RP organises first media conference for the youth Over 250 delegates attended the first Media Conference for Singapore Youth (MECO) on Sep 8, 2016 held at Republic Polytechnic (RP). Organised by RP’s School of Management and Communication, the conference aimed to help aspiring communication practitioners learn more about the media industry beyond what they had learnt in their classrooms. The one-day event also provided a platform for industry professionals, including policy makers, industry practitioners and researchers, to share their perspectives. In her keynote presentation, Ms Angeline Poh, the assistant chief executive of Media Development Authority, urged the delegates to build connections with other media professionals so as to succeed in the industry. Citing the examples of popular artists like Jack Neo and Irene Ang, Ms Poh also urged those present to be adaptable to changes in the media environment. Ms Poh then joined other panellists for a discussion on the skills required in the media industry in the 21st century. The other panellists included MediaCorp chief digital officer Shane Mitchell, Bolt Media chief executive Chan Yi Wen and Publicis Media’s head of analytics and insights Harpreet Singh.
Students found the discussion beneficial. Second-year Mass Communication student Teo Teck Kuan, 19, said: “MECO gave the participants valuable insights towards the media industry in Singapore. The most interesting thing was to be able to get close-up interviews with experts from the industry.” Besides hearing from industry experts, the delegates were also put through their paces through a series of workshops. The future of advertising, the skills needed to be a digital journalist and how to use data to tell a story were among the topics covered. Those who attended the workshops found the tips given useful. First-year Mass Communication student Nathalie Evangelia D’Souza, 17, said: “It was really an eye-opener into the media industry. I got to hear from professionals who have been in this sector for many years, who tell it like it is.” Nellie Goh Jing Ying, a first-year Mass Communication student, added: “I was able to engage myself with the speakers by asking them questions to know more about the workshops.”
The panel shared their insights on trends, such as the evolution of social media and freelancers in the media industry, during the hour-long discussion. Article Written by : Kristel Joy William (The Article was extracted from “The Republican Post’’)

Eating Right During Festive Seasons!
Eating right generally, should be a lifelong decision that will eventually be ingrained into a habit. With the correct ingrained eating habit, it will not be harmful to indulge gastronomically during the occasional festive seasons to fully partake in the celebrations! However, if we are still concerned regarding the possible 2 to 3kg weight gain that sometimes happen during a period of festive feasting, we must be mindful of the excessive calories we eat.
EAT SMALLER PORTIONS
Skip the main meals during lunch or dinner
Festive foods are frequently oily or sweet. Such food will contain proportionately more calories.
If there are gatherings with feasting planned after those regular timings. This will allow less overall calories taken during that day.
A smaller intake will help reduce excessive calorie input. It may be useful to drink up to 500mls of water half an hour before the meal to reduce the appetite.
Reduce or avoid alcohol and sweet drinks Be mindful of its intake as this often contributes to excessive calories during festive seasons. Drink water in between the occasional sweet drinks if thirsty.
continue with regular exercise routine
This will allow the extra calories taken to be expended.
Fast for a day or two
This will allow the body to expend the additional calories that have been stored during the period of over indulgence. 13
Money Sense
Starting Work It is never too late to start taking control of your money matters. Get started by thinking about how you manage your money every day and what goals you have for the future that will cost money, e.g. further education, a wedding, your retirement so on and so forth. In this issue of dREam, let’s us talk about how to manage your money!
As you transition from student life into the workforce, most of you will become financially self-reliant for the first time. These are exciting times - who wouldn’t feel a sense of elation when we see our first salary being credited into our bank accounts? But few of us can afford to spend our money without care. Some of us may already have responsibilities - you may have dependants that will count on you financially, perhaps elderly parents or younger siblings who do not have any income of their own. There may also be student loans to clear off quickly too. Even if you land your dream job, or secure your dream income, you can still land yourself in trouble if you are not sufficiently capable financially. Money management skills are a must have. Control your spending and credit usage It is quite natural to want to reward yourself for hard work but do keep this in perspective. If the latest must-have designer bag or IT gadget takes up a generous chunk of your monthly income, maybe you should rethink the concept of reward especially since these items are not investments and lose their value almost immediately. Little self-control and a strong urge to splurge can only spell trouble in the longer run. As the old adage goes, always spend within your means (but this doesn’t mean it’s ok to spend everything you earn). Think hard before you borrow. Getting a loan or credit line should only be a last resort because of the costs you will incur and the complications if you cannot keep up with your debt commitments. Managing your income Identify your disposable income (i.e. how much of your salary is left after paying taxes and CPF, rent or contribution for your share of household expenses to your parents), and make sure your monthly expenditure does not exceed what is left of your income. Having trouble keeping track of your spending? Read on and fret not. 14
Learn to make a budget A practical way of managing your disposable income and monitoring your expenditure is to draw up a budget. A simple one can be planned in just three steps:
1. List all your daily living expenses
(transport, meals and rent, contribution to household expenses, etc.)
2. Decide how much of your salary you
intend to spend on each item and stick to it strictly.
3. Set aside the rest of your pay and save it.
Start with realistic amounts first (maybe $200 per month) and aim to work towards at least 10% of your pay. Save more if you can.
Do remember to review your budget every now and then. You may find that your intended expense limits are unrealistic – they may be lower or higher than they really are. If you need assistance, use an online budget calculator. Don’t be too discouraged if you have not been able to follow your budget closely. Motivate yourself to try harder next month by keeping your financial goals in mind: it’s never too early to save for your retirement, for your parents’ expenses when they retire if they are counting on you, your dream flat or a dream holiday.
