Soaring high with an indomitable spirit BY GWEN TEH

It is no secret that some courses are more sought after in other polytechnics and when Sandra Tan Shwee Ghee, 20, got her posting after the O level results, she was disappointed that she did not get into Singapore Polytechnic. After all, she wanted to do business and the business courses there were popular. When she first came to RP, it didn’t help that Sandra had trouble coping with the unfamiliar learning system. “I’m not someone who could adapt easily to a new environment, so being in a new school and on top of that having to learn through the PBL system in RP, a different method of teaching didn't sit well with me,” she said. Sandra also had to deal with the difficulty of making ends meet – she had to work part-time to supplement the family income because her father is the sole breadwinner and as the eldest child, she had to work to ease the financial burden. This meant that she had to juggle the demands of school, attending church twice a week and working at a food stall in Jurong. During school days, she worked every weekend for about 5-6 hours and during the school breaks; about 10 hours every day. The pressure was building and at some points it was hard to take. “There was a certain period of time, where things were just too much to handle. I was worn out, like literally, I didn’t want anyone to know that I was going through a tough time, so I stayed up late nights to cry just so that nobody would be around to witness it.” Thankfully though, RP has in place a solid system of support. Financially, Sandra got help with bursaries, scholarships such as CDAC Bursary and ACORN Marketing and Research Consultants Pte Ltd. Her mentor, Ms Tio Wee Leng, Programme Chair of DCBR, encouraged her and her peers rallied around her to help out. As a result, Sandra did not just manage to survive, she soared – scoring a GPA of 3.9, and was CEC’s valecdictorian, winning the Diploma prize for the first and second year, in addition to nine module prizes. Looking back, Sandra says she couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of her lecturers and peers.

“Being able to enjoy what you’re learning placed a huge emphasis on setting the right attitude and I believe it is what helps me to do well.’’ - Sandra Tan Shwee Ghee 03

A new tradition is on the way….

The RP Alumni Family Tree To honour and celebrate the contributions of our Alumni, RP will be constructing the Alumni Family Tree, an installation art piece to be displayed at the Mound. The Mound’s peak represents our alumni’s aspirations to reach for even greater heights. It will be in a prominent position at the entrance of the poly and will be easily seen from all levels within RPC, serving as a reminder that all students should strive to achieve the best during their poly days for them to flourish as alumni in future. The Tree symbolises Republic Polytechnic’s flourishing alumni community and maturity as an institution. The roots represent the students being moulded with the RP code of honour and the crown of the tree represents the alumni, being held up by the strong values embedded in them from RP. From the Class of 2006 to the Class of 2014, we are proud to have graduated 9 cohorts of students. The launch of the RP Alumni Family Tree was held during the Graduation Ceremony 2015 where RP’s Board of Governor, Chairman Mr. David Wong and our P/CEO, Mr. Yeo Li Pheow, presented the Graduation Leaf to the graduating cohort’s 11th Student Council, Ms C Keerthigha.

The installation of the Alumni Family Tree is due to complete in October 2015. Definitely something to watch out for!

By Ariani Adam (Alumni, CEC) The biggest local music festival is set to enthrall music lovers this 11-22 August with various workshops, showcases and a two-day Main Festival Stage which will be happening on 21 & 22 August. After seven successful runs since 2008, Republic Polytechnic and The Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC) is pleased to present IGNITE! Music Festival 2015. With the participation of more than 600 students, the annual music festival prides itself with a fully run concert by students of Republic Polytechnic. The student-driven festival, which circles around the theme – Passion and Compassion – aims to promote the best of local music in a great setting, for a good cause. Best of all, it’s free! Every year, IGNITE! is armed with a series of fringe events and workshops. IGNITE! 2015 is all set to entertain music enthusiasts once again with Gig Photography Workshop, Band Management Dialogue, Song Writing Workshop and many more. Last year, the two-day festival garnered more than 10,000 festival goers – from screaming fan girls, laid back hipsters to head banging rockers – all came down to Republic Polytechnic to enjoy the good music from bands like 53A, Aspectrum, Caracal, Gentle Bones, ShiGGa Shay, The Sam Willows and RP’s very own Jammerz Arena and Replug IG. This year, IGNITE! 2015 is set to bring down the house once again, featuring the best of local acts which will be mentioned soon. Besides good music, there will also be a village of booths set up to complete the IGNITE! Experience. From food and beverages to merchandises booths manned by sponsors, festival goers can expect a happy tummy whilst enjoying the good music; and also shop for all their fashion needs. With a bigger setting, the festival aims to reach out to even more partners this year – including Volunteer Welfare Organisation, Homes and many more – all to establish its marks on its theme. Promoting youth volunteerism through music, RP’s Service Learning Club will be housed within the festival village alongside buskers, lifestyle booths and many more!

Graduate night

2015

The course I attended in Republic Polytechnic brought a brand new perspective to my life as it empowered me as an individual in becoming more independent to contribute to our society at large; Singapore. Did I notice any difference in myself over the past three years? Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. Two years in a row I have been a part of the Graduate’s Night as the Master of Ceremony, exhilarating to say the least, inspiring an audience and reminiscing about the three years of fun and joy ushering in a new age as the graduating batch approached the cross roads. I have come a long way, deferring a semester because of a surgery and to start afresh with brand new classmates. However, I was not worried because RP’s culture is so welcoming that I had no problems fitting in. I am glad to have been given the opportunity to study and receive quality education that is the greatest milestone both in my life and career. I cherish the relationships both sweet and sour I had in my time and above all I take home a network of people I can be proud to call my friends, this is what we are and this is my Republic Polytechnic. I wish success to everyone graduating together with me. Thank you to all that have been a part of my journey in RP.

MOMENTUM 2015 || our memories

In its 8th year running, Momentum 2015 – Republic Polytechnic’s Dance Festival was back on Tuesday, 19 May till Saturday, 30 May. Set with a theme, Our Memories, the festival presented how technology and modernity in our urban spaces exist seamlessly with our Asian traditional cultures and beliefs. Festival goers were enthralled by the dynamic dance vocabularies showcased, ranging from Ballet to Breakdance, and Traditional to Modern Contemporary, whilst keeping true to our Asian spirit. The festival started with a high with the annual LEAPS! Showcase which created an opportunity for young choreographers to exercise their creativity after undergoing 4 months of intensive training sessions with The Republic Cultural Centre’s Zaini Tahir. This year, the dance festival proper started with a bang with an Opening Launch on Monday, 25 May. Held at South Agora, it featured a myriad of dance performances by students of Republic Polytechnic’s Dance and external invites. Momentum 2015 included 2 dance workouts – Capoeira which was led by Mestre Claudinho and also Zumba workout which was led by Samantha Kan. Even with little or no experience in dance, attendees had fun in an hour long mass exercise fusing music and movement. The feedback from the attendees was that they managed to learn more about the steps and technical aspects of the dance and it has sparked their interest to further pursue the dance. It was also a good workout for them in the midst of their busy schedules. The week-long festival also included 4 dance workshops including Malay Dance, Modern Dance, Bollywood and also KPOP. All of these were led by well-known choreographers from the industry namely Kavitha Krishnan, Muhd Zaihar, Fathurahman Said and Zaini Tahir. Besides the workouts and workshops, RPresenting, the Hip Hop Competition, was back for its 8th year. Crews from all over Singapore battled it out to be the best Hip Hop dance crew around. The competition was filled with energy, where everyone strut their moves to reign champions. This all led up to the Main Showcase, Our Memories, which showcased the best talents from Republic Polytechnic’s Hip Hop Style Groovaz Crew, ICG Natyam, MCG Dharma Tarian, Modern Dance IG, Capoeira IG and external groups such Bukit Batok Secondary School Malay Dance, ITE College West Korean Dance Wave, SBA Dance Spectrum, NUS Chinese Dance, NUS Dance Ensemble, Fernvale Primary Indian Dance, CHIJ Toa Payoh. We saw impressive representations and collaborations that intrigued our senses. It was a concert not to be missed. As quoted by Momentum 2015’s Festival Producer, Jeremy Leow, “Our Memories evoked all kinds of emotions from the students involved in the festival. They embraced their dance genres with great passion and put on a great show during the Main Showcase. Overall, the week-long dance festival created numerous opportunities for young dancers to excel in their craft.” See you at Momentum next year! 10

A night with CREATE Alumnus Studio for an Alumni Various graduates who were part of CREATE Republic spent an evening at The Republic Cultural Centre (TRCC), Dialogue that was organised during the CREATE Management Camp for the incoming leaders of 2015/16. By Ariani Adam The annual CREATE Management Camp greeted the incoming Interest Group leaders with a little twist to the programme this year. Besides the usual Workshops, the Alumni Dialogue – coordinated by Modern Dance IG – created an opportunity for the IGs to learn from previous leaders who are also making a name for themselves in the industry. Moderated by Zaini Tahir, the interactive session saw a panel of eight Alumni from various IGs talk to the campers about their journey throughout their years in CREATE Republic and how it helped them grow as the performer or person they are now.

experience during his National Service; from coiling cables to understanding how the stage works, he was able to appreciate the arts scene much more. Production work is no stranger to the alumnus especial Deborah Tan – formerly CAP President – and also Shahrin and Amira – who were part of Jammerz Arena. As Deborah currently ventures out in the industry with Esplanade, she expressed how passion is important in achieving goals. “No matter how hard it gets, you always have to remember your roots, and don’t ever give up on your dreams,” the Esplanade Production Manager said.

Myra Aziz, who was part of Latin Dance Sport, is currently a Resident Instructor at School of Music, an Assistant Dance Instructor at St. Hilda’s Primary School and also a Freelance Instructor at DanzPeople. During the dialogue, she expressed her thanks to TRCC for moulding her for the person she is today.

Former Jammerz Arena members, who are currently musicians in rock band Bear Culture, second the statement, as it is definitely not easy excelling in music in this little red dot. Even with challenges, the band has just finished their album launch, and will be touring around the region soon.

She said, “To be on stage is a privilege, I felt blessed with the facilities in TRCC. If not for RP, I won’t be where I am now – the Amateur Open – which is directly below the professional level.”

Besides sharing their CREATE Republic journey, the alumnus also answered questions pertaining to leadership within the IG.

Muhammad Raizal bin Abdul Rahim – currently teaching in several studios likes School of Music, Dreamstation and Dance Factory – shared the same views as the Myra. He said, “During my time in Hip Hop IG, I not only learnt how to be a dancer but also a leader. It was a learning journey to becoming a more mature dancer.” Others, like Tan Yan Ru – currently undergoing active training with NUS Dance Ensemble led by Zaini – had the opportunity to learn about stage production during her journey with CREATE Republic. Even Zaini shared his tech

Zaini wrapped up the dialogue, saying, “In the arts, there are no boundaries. TRCC provides a wonderful opportunity.” Shiva, who is still an active alumni of RP’s Indian Cultural Group, encouraged the members of CREATE Republic to make full use of their time in TRCC. “Being in TRCC is a good opportunity. There is no right or wrong, and it’s a platform to use your creative mind. There’s a stage for us to perform in front of a huge audience, so cherish it and always be grateful.” 11

CARPE DIEM Never cease in the pursuit of knowledge success and academic qualifications that I desired. As an international student in RP then, I was older than most of my classmates. In other words, I was already lagging behind them in terms of time. The BIE programme offered by UoA gives me the flexibility to start my career while pursuing my bachelor degree. It also meant that I could quickly apply what I learnt in the course of the programme to my business.

Name: Diploma: GPA/ Year:

Yang Chen Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management (with Merit) 3.5 over 4

Q: What programme did you enrol for at Ngee Ann-Adelaide (NAA)? I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (BIE) programme offered by the University of Adelaide (UoA) through Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre. The BIE programme is the only full-fledged bachelor degree on innovation and entrepreneurship. Students like me learn valuable and useful skills to incubate, grow and execute business ideas. Q: What inspired you to pursue the abovementioned programme after having completed the Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management (with Merit) earlier at Republic Polytechnic? What and where do you see the relevance, if any? Even when I was a student in the Republic Polytechnic (RP), I have already heard of this programme. The name in itself, sounded very interesting to me. In my opinion, Innovation and Entrepreneurship has unlimited possibilities because I believe every industry and business needs their staff to be innovative, often encouraging them to think out-of-the-box, i.e. creatively. The notion that Entrepreneurship is only applicable to those who want to start their own business is only partially true. The term ‘Intrapreneur’ is popularly used to describe people who apply entrepreneurship in organisations they work for. Thus in reality, Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Sports & Leisure Management are actually interlinked in many different ways. Q: Having graduated with Merit (GPA 3.5) in your diploma programme, you could have applied for admission into any of the local universities. Instead, you picked NAA. Why? The truth be told, I did not want to further my studies at the local universities, after evaluating the career

12

UoA, the State University of Adelaide, is one of Australia’s most prestigious institutions. Consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide and is a member of Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia’s leading research universities, UoA grants generous module exemptions to Diploma holders of local polytechnics for advance standing into its suite of undergraduate programmes offered through NAA. Bond-free scholarships are also available to deserving students from poor families who perform well academically. Q: When did you start your bachelor degree programme at NAA? When will you graduate? I started on the BIE programme in January 2014. Currently working on my final project, I will complete my studies in July this year. Q: As this is a part-time programme, are you currently working in a related field? After graduation, what will you be pursuing, i.e. what is your long-term career goal? How do you think this programme will help bring you closer to that? Steering my career towards assuming various roles in Management, I am currently leading a 10-man team. Though the route is plagued with challenges, it also paves a pathway of numerous excitements. Being innovative is absolutely necessary to improve the current work processes and productivity levels in my business. I am also trying to be an ‘intra-preneur’, to apply knowledge gleaned from the BIE programme. Q: How different is it studying at NAA, as compared to your student life earlier at RP? Describe the school environment and campus culture in NAA – what do you like most? I feel RP is truly an amazing place. By using problem-based learning methodology, RP students are trained to be excellent problem-solvers and presenters. Being the newest and youngest of the five polytechnics, RP is vibrant, guided by innovation. On the other hand, the culture at the centrallylocated NAA campus is vastly different. With the primary composite of NAA students being adult learners, the level of seriousness that education is valued, is several notches up. The school environment is very conducive to facilitate the

learning process. I like the fact that the ample but quiet study rooms are always filled with students and that each is also well-equipped with facilities necessary for project discussions. We are also encouraged to treasure every minute in school by putting it to good use such as studying. Even so, students in NAA are always helpful to one another, spurring each other to perform their best and to progress together. Q: Tell us more about the curriculum, the teaching methodology and your favourite lecturers. What, in your opinion stands out most? All of my lecturers are from the University campus in Adelaide, Australia. Holding PhDs and multiple Master degrees, they are also equipped with decades of experiences in their own fields, with many of them being entrepreneurs. I am immensely thankful to them as I have really learnt a lot from their real-life case studies. Q: How do you find the course? Which subjects/ modules do you find most interesting/ useful? Which do you find most challenging? What do you think is the most important skills/knowledge it has equipped you with? Overall, the programme is very well-structured, as it covers many critical aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship. If I have to single out one particularly challenging and most interesting module, it would have to be New Venture Planning as it required students to think about a real business idea and then try to build on it. Though it was a tough process, we managed to showcase our business idea to our lecturer and fellow classmates. I remember the feeling at that point time was simply awesome! I feel the most important thing that I have learnt, is not the knowledge from the modules that I have read so far. Rather, it is about the whole thinking process, the ability to readily accept new knowledge and to effectively apply it in this rapid changing modern society. Q: What advice do you have for your juniors in RP who may be looking for a school or programme to further their education after graduation? Would you recommend NAA? Why/ Why not? It is crucial to continue learning – we should never be contented with what we know, but to continue to be intrigued, to pursue the quest for knowledge. There is no such thing as ‘one-size-fits-all’ and that we should be clear what we really want and then to go for it. One of the best choices in life I have made so far is to further my studies at NAA and I hope my journey will continue to be very exciting and fruitful.

How an awful fan film helped my film career Perry Lam is currently studying Bachelor of Arts (Media) at Macquarie University in Sydney. An avid film maker, he has sent several short films to various film festivals which he directed during his course of study. He tells us more about his university life and how his experiences in RP have helped to shape him to what he is today. I love cinema and I love filmmaking, more importantly, I love film directing. It is something I see myself doing and also something I can confidently say I am really good at. This love and passion was film was nurtured at my time in Republic Polytechnic, however, it was not the only lesson I took away from RP.

Poly life I wasn’t exactly the best student during my time in RP when I took up the Interactive and Digital Media course. I was frequently late, too engrossed in graphic novels and spent too much time arguing about the themes of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight with my friends. However, RP allowed us to think creatively. It allowed us, impressionable young kids, to take risks and that was how I discovered filmmaking. The facilitators instilled in us to have no fear of failure. I cut my teeth on ‘Gotham Underground’, which was a film my course mates and I produced during our graduation year. It was an eye opener learning experience for me.

My short films production In my current university course, every semester, all the students in the course would pitch a project as an assignment and the student whose project gets selected becomes the director while everyone else fills out the rest of the crew. Out of the 3 semesters I have been studying film, I was selected as the director twice. That is where my lessons I learnt from RP came into play. My first short film, ‘Midnight Theatre’ is a surreal tale of a man escaping his dull monotonous reality to live in a fantasy world. We faced some problems such as limited amount of days for the actual shoot but this is

Note: Credit 'Zarrin' for the Gotham Underground Batman photos and the rest of the photos to 'Ryan Wai'

where as the director, I became a problem solver. I was surprised that not only did the crew and I succeeded, the shots we took worked for the film. The second film I directed was ‘The Black Rat’, a documentary about the experiences of the Black Rat, a real life superhero who patrols around Western Sydney. Michael Mann’s beautiful night shots and formal cinematography were my inspiration for the film. Both these films have been submitted to film festivals in Australia and Singapore. As a film maker, I need to know not just about the technical knowledge of cameras and lighting, but also about marketing, promotion and branding. Has RP helped me through the years as a filmmaker? I would say definitely, failure isn’t something I dwell on now, it is just a learning process. Great films are not simple to make, they must be forged out of fire and passion to truly be a work of art. If you would like to know more about my filmmaking services, feel free to follow me on my Instagram at @lamperry29 or email me at perry.lam29@gmail.com. Article by Mr Perry Lam Alumnus 2010
