Graduation
Apart from acquiring knowledge during my learning journey in RP, one of my biggest takeaways include forging valuable friendships with my school mate, facilitators as well as club mates and advisors from both SAS club and Student Council. Thank you every one for making my three years of learning journey in RP a fruitful and wonderful experience, for being the reason behind my eagerness for looking forward to coming to school and for putting a smile on my face at the silliest joke being cracked. I will definitely remember the circulation of sleeping photo whenever any of us fell asleep during lesson as well as the hilarious moment when our classmates could not answer questions being thrown out by the facilitator and instead attempted to smoke through their way to the outer space, earning giggles from everybody including the facilitator who could see through what was going on.
SHL alumnus, Jeremy Tong (2010 graduate), is an avid mountain climber who has ascended 31 mountains and summited 24. Jeremy joined RP as part of the pioneer batch of students from the Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Learning (DOAL) despite his O-level results qualifying him for Momentum Dance Festival entry to a junior college. In his RP days, he joined the trekking and rock-climbing clubs and signed up for the Alpine Leadership Programme where he honed his mountaineering, ropes and harnessing skills. Jeremy shared, “DOAL gave me a OP 2016 From An Alumna’s Perspective headstart to learn the skills required to climb Mount Everest. HAPPY GRADUATION EVERYONE!!! In all honesty, three years of my tertiary education in Republic Polytechnic (RP) passes as quickly as a flash of lightning. I can vividly remember myself wearing stressful and lost expression as I stepped foot into the classroom on the first day of my freshman year. However at the end of my learning journey in RP, I am proud to say that RP’s Problem Based Learning approach has trained me into a confident speaker, equipping me with skills that prepare me for my future endeavor- regardless of furthering my studies or joining of the workforce. M U T L N A E V M I O T M S E F 2016 E C N A D And that is a wrap for Momentum Dance Festival 2016. Once again our audiences’ left the theatre filled with inspiration and satisfaction from the performances at this year’s Dance Festival. An interesting journey for the participants, crew and audiences. This year Momentum started with a bang with LEAPS! For the first time, Republic Polytechnic and ITE College Central were combined. Under the guidance of the Festival Director, Mr Zaini Tahir, young performers were able to shine and showcase their talents through their very own choreographies.
Then came Momentum Dance Festival, Main Showcase. Crowds filled the theatre as they anticipated the performances. This year we had dancers from SYNERGY from Anglo Chinese School (Primary) SYNERGY, Admiralty Primary Malay Dance, Dance Spectrum International, ITE College Central Malay Dance, NUS Chinese Dance, NUS Dance Ensemble, RP Capoeira IG, Style Groovaz Crew from RP, RP Indian Cultural Group Natyam, Dharma Endari from RP Tarian IG, RP Modern Dance IG, RP Seni Silat, RP Wushu IG, SMU Caderas Latinas & SMU Eurhythmix. The items left numerous impressions and feeling on the audience. Fierce, Adorable, Cool, Emotional, Hyped, Elegance. These are just very little words to describe the beautiful and inspirational dances that were performed. Some were even moved to tears! This article does not do Momentum Dance Festival justice. It's a great pity if you have missed it. But that's alright. Just don't forget to come to the next Momentum in May 2017! BY Kristel Joy William, Year 2, SMC 04

Orientation Programme 2016 from an Alumna’s Perspective Having the chance to volunteer for RP Orientation Programme (OP) 2016 held on 14 and 15 April 2016 brought me great joy and satisfaction. As RP alumni, the various school cheers and the ‘One RP’ spirit demonstrated throughout OP2016 gave me the chance to rekindle fond memories of the times when I served as a student leader three years ago. The event enabled me to reconnect with my alma mater and facilitators who are always happy to welcome me back as alumni. The excitement and smiles on their faces were priceless. OP2016 also presented me with the golden opportunity to interact with juniors who are new to the RP education system. I managed to share with them useful study and exam tips, as well as my very own ‘RP Journey’. I would strongly encourage all alumni who can spare the time and energy to support or volunteer for the various RP events. You not only get to interact and network with others, but to also forge the ‘One RP’ spirit while making a difference! For further details on how you can contribute as alumni, please contact your respective school alumni chapter representatives or the Alumni Services Team via the Alumni Portal www.alumni.rp.edu.sg. by Diana Gloria, Alumna 2013, Diploma Biomedical Science

MONEY SENSE Dream To Start Taking Control Of Your Money! Starting Work
As you transition from student life into the workforce, most of you will become financially self-reliant for the first time. These are exciting times - who wouldn’t feel a sense of elation when we see our first salary being credited into our bank accounts? But few of us can afford to spend our money without care. Some of us may already have responsibilities - you may have dependants that will count on you financially, perhaps elderly parents or younger siblings who do not have any income of their own. There may also be student loans to clear off quickly too. Even if you land your dream job, or secure your dream income, you can still land yourself in trouble if you are not sufficiently capable financially. Money management skills are a must have. Control your spending and credit usage It is quite natural to want to reward yourself for hard work but do keep this in perspective. If the latest must-have designer bag or IT gadget takes up a generous chunk of your monthly income, maybe you should rethink the concept of reward especially since these items are not investments and lose their value almost immediately. Little self-control and a strong urge to splurge can only spell trouble in the longer run. As the old adage goes, always spend within your means (but this doesn’t mean it’s ok to spend everything you earn). Think hard before you borrow. Getting a loan or credit line should only be a last resort because of the costs you will incur and the complications if you cannot keep up with your debt commitments. Managing your income

It is never too late to start taking control of your money matters. Get started by thinking about how you manage your money every day and what goals you have for the future that will cost money, e.g. further education, a wedding, your retirement so on and so forth. In this issue of dREam, let’s us talk about how to manage your money! expenses to your parents), and make sure your monthly expenditure does not exceed what is left of your income. Having trouble keeping track of your spending? Read on and fret not. Learn to make a budget A practical way of managing your disposable income and monitoring your expenditure is to draw up a budget. A simple one can be planned in just three steps: 1. List all your daily living expenses (transport, meals and rent, contribution to household expenses, etc.)
2. Decide how much of your salary you intend
to spend on each item and stick to it strictly.
3. Set aside the rest of your pay and save it. Start
with realistic amounts first (maybe $200 per month) and aim to work towards at least 10% of your pay. Save more if you can.
Do remember to review your budget every now and then. You may find that your intended expense limits are unrealistic – they may be lower or higher than they really are. If you need assistance, use an online budget calculator. Don’t be too discouraged if you have not been able to follow your budget closely. Motivate yourself to try harder next month by keeping your financial goals in mind: it’s never too early to save for your retirement, for your parents’ expenses when they retire if they are counting on you, your dream flat or a dream holiday. The above information is prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Social and Family Development, Monetary Authority of Singapore and dREam Editorial
