Republic Polytechnic SkillsFuture Fiesta 2016 Republic Polytechnic (RP) organised the inaugural SkillsFuture Fiesta to enable around 2,500 year one students to learn about the various SkillsFuture initiatives and how to prepare for their future careers. The 5-day Fiesta, which began on 2 August 2016, introduced students to various SkillsFuture initiatives such as the Education and Career Guidance (ECG), Enhanced Internship (EI), Young Talent Programme (YTP) and Earn and Learn Programme (ELP). The Fiesta was also integrated into school curriculum to enrich students’ learning experience. Apart from helping them to connect with the importance of SkillsFuture, the activities at the Fiesta also encouraged them to take ownership of their own career and lifelong learning. Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Counsellors were at the fiesta booths to explain the global employment trend and how SkillsFuture can help with these challenges. Students also have the opportunity to pen down their thoughts of their future careers on a reflection wall. Visit www.rp.edu.sg/SkillsFuture_Fiesta_2016 to find out more about the activities during the SkillsFuture Fiesta!

ELP SUCCESS STORIES Muhamad Amiruddin Bin Norazmi Graduated with Diploma in Information Technology, School of Infocomm ELP: Specialist Diploma in Information Systems Development Emerging Technology Development Trainee with Accenture Singapore Why did you enrol in the SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programme when you already have a place with SIT? Personally, the Earn and Learn Programme (ELP), Specialist Diploma in Information Systems Development, is more beneficial as it provides me with an excellent opportunity to develop and hone my skills in the Information Technology field. This work-study programme will provide me with a strong platform to gain work experience and also put what I have learnt during the part time course into practice. Needless to say, it is good to pursue a university degree but this can be done later in the future. Equipping myself with the relevant skills from training and the work experience gained, will lay a better foundation for me to perform well when I pursue a university degree. In addition, the ELP may allow me to be exempted from some modules when I pursue the degree course. What were your parents’ reaction to your decision to enrol in SkillsFuture ELP?
04
My father was initially apprehensive when I told him about my intention to sign up for the SkillsFuture ELP. After explaining the benefits of the progamme to my parents, they have a better understanding of ELP and thus are supportive of my decision. I am grateful that
they give me the freedom and support in what I choose for my future. How did RP the Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Counsellor help me?
Being Introverted, I find it a challenge to open up to strangers. Hence, attending a job interview is a big hurdle for me. When I received a call from the Earn and Learn Programme (ELP) participating company for an interview session, I decided to approach Mr Chan Chee Hoe, an ECG Counsellor from RP Career Centre, for guidance on interview preparation. Mr Chan walked through with me the possible scenarios that could happen during the interview session. He also did a mock interview with me and gave me immediate feedbacks on my performance. Thanks to his efforts, I gained self-confidence for the actual interview and managed to secure a position with the ELP company, Accenture Singapore. What do you look for in this ELP? I can’t express enough how surprised and thrilled I was to be given the opportunity to work with Accenture Singapore. The state-of-the-art technology and IT platforms that Accenture Singapore uses are impressive and I am looking forward to work with them to develop new technologies.
Name: Ms. Ng Xin Ping Graduated with a Diploma in Business Applications, Republic Polytechnic Current Company: Axxel Marketing Designation: Logistics Officer
“I graduated from the School of Infocomm and signed up for the Earn and Learn Programme (ELP) in the Logistics Sector as I have interest in this area and is keen to know more about it. I gained interest in the logistics sector due to the Logistics elective module that I took during my study in RP. As I do not have much knowledge and background about Logistics, I initially faced a lot of challenges along the way. But with the support from my company, school mentors, my parents and peers, I was able to overcome the challenges faced. During this period, while working with Axxel Marketing, I gained valuable insights about how supply chain works, such as the planning of delivery schedules.”
“When my daughter told me about the ELP and insisted on joining the programme because of her interest in Logistic, I was worried and concerned about her studies as she needed to work and study at the same time. My main concern was thatshe might not be able to cope well in her studies and she might be too stressed up. After the start of school term, I gave my daughter a lot of support and encouragement. After seeing her manage her time well, I am relieved now that she had taken this programme and that my daughter had grown up professionally.” - Mdm Ng (Mother of Ng Xin Ping)

Name: Javithraa D/O Raja Anithiran Graduated with a Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management, Republic Polytechnic Current Company: Pan Pacific Singapore Designation: Guest Services Officer
“This Earn and Learn Programme has provided me with a work-study platform to gain relevant skills and also enhanced my knowledge in the Hospitality sector. I am thankful to Republic Polytechnic for putting in place a programme that allows me to pursue my passion and better prepare myself for the industry. The specialist diploma is structured in a way that I am able to relate back the theory learnt to my work and to apply the knowledge gained at the workplace. To all fresh graduates, I would say that if you have the passion for the hospitality industry, the Earn and Learn Programme is an attractive pathway you can consider.” 05

Money Sense
Marriage In last few issues, we shared some tips and advice on how to manage your money when you start working and while you are serving the nation (National Service). Let’s talk about marriage! Congratulations, if you are ready to settle down to married life. Consider attending a marriage preparation programme which prepares couples for a healthy and enriching marriage and family life. These programmes help couples to understand themselves and their spouses better, as well as learn practical skills on communication, financial planning and conflict management. Sign up for a Marriage Preparation Programme. You can refer to Marriage Central for more information.
Everyone looks forward to their wedding and to the start of married life. Decide together how much money to set aside for organising your wedding. Remember that this should be pegged to how much you earn and feel comfortable with, not what your cousin or buddy spent on their weddings! Major events like weddings can be expensive and costs can often feel like they are running away. Take charge, prioritise what you need and manage expenses carefully. Years from now, your wedding should bring back beautiful memories, not make you cringe whenever you think of how much you spent or how much you still owe your lender.
One essential aspect of living together is to learn how to manage your finances jointly. You and your spouse may have different attitudes towards money. What may seem sensible and prudent to him or her, may seem stingy to you. Money matters can cause a strain in any relationship. Courting couples who lavished each other with extravagant gifts may find that this is no longer as desirable once they get married and have their own home to pay for. Find less expensive but still meaningful ways to celebrate significant milestones in your marriage.
Here are some tips to deal with your money amicably: Know each other’s style of managing money well and adapt to it. If he or she is more of a spender, agree on some limits and be a saver to complement. Make your expectations for your partner clear and find some common ground. Make an effort to draw up budgets jointly. This will help you both track how your incomes are being spent and how to improve your financial position. Find a way to share responsibility for all household expenses as well as savings for common goals like emergency funds or retirement. Find agreement on each partner’s contribution; it may be in proportion to each person’s income. One could be servicing the house loan while the other could be paying the bills, for example.
14
Set goals and take responsibility to live within your means. Remember that you won’t always be a young couple just starting out with promising careers. One of you may have to stop working one day when kids come along or to take care of elderly parents, so be mindful of the need to save from early on. Expenses will soon go up as your family grows. Encourage each other to work towards your shared goals. Avoid impulsive spending or borrowing. Do not make large financial commitments on your own without reaching consensus with your partner – do not agree to lend your brother money to buy a car or start a business before asking your spouse first. Always keep within your means; as a guide, your debt to income ratio should not be more than 35%. Get important things sorted out first – consider health & life insurance.
