Challenges in developing the bionic eye

Professor Emeritus David Geoffrey Penington AC (MA, DM, BCh) is described by reviewers of his autobiography Making Waves as “one of Australia’s leading public health experts” and “a tireless leader who, at every stage of his working life, has never shunned public controversy in a bid to improve the lives of all Australians”.

Born in Melbourne in 1930 and educated at The University of Melbourne and at Oxford University, he worked as a Consultant Physician in London Hospital (1963-1967) before returning to Australia to hold the positions of Professor of Medicine (1970-1987) and then Vice Chancellor (1988-1995) at The University of Melbourne.

He then co-founded Foursight Associates Pty Ltd in 1996 with other leaders in biomedicine (Dr Graham Mitchell, Sir Gustav Nossal and Dr John Stocker AO) to provide advisory services in science, technology and innovation to clients in industry, academia, the financial sector and government.

Professor Penington has contributed significantly to the governance of major medical research and biotechnology organisations. He is currently Chair of Bionic Vision Australia, a national consortium of researchers working together to develop a bionic eye that will (all going well) restore vision in those suffering visual impairment from retinal degenerative conditions (including age-related macular degeneration).

The Monthly Argument Drinks, Dinner and Discussion Thursday, September 20th

While there are no plans at this stage to revive the full scale regular debates, The Monthly Argument lives on as a less formal gathering for drinks, dinner and discussion on the third Thursday of the month. We may trial a few different formats such as pre-reading on a particular topic or a guest speaker. However, even if the evening is totally informal, the idea is to spend at least part of the time exchanging different perspectives on political and social issues and not just small talk.

Dinner will be a resident’s style buffet dinner comprising soup, main course and dessert all for only $15.00 for Graduate Union members and $20.00 for non-members. Drinks are at members’ bar prices.

Doctors are bombarded with medications by drug companies and their patients are taking more medications. Is this better treatment or are we taking many drugs blindly?

Dr Ralph Audehm is a general practitioner and the GP Director at Dianella Community Health. Prior to this he was the Director of Programs and Services for Diabetes Australia Victoria where he developed and successfully implemented statewide diabetes education, prevention and management programs, such as LIFE, across the state. Dt Audehm holds a Fellowship (Honorary) in the Department of General Practice at The University of Melbourne.

Greta Bradman, soprano accompanied by Ken Murray, guitarist

Greta Bradman, soprano, is gaining a reputation as a vocalist of great beauty and skill. Currently nominated for a 2012 Helpmann Award and awarded the SA 2012 APRA AMCOS ‘performance of the year’ Award, Greta’s recitals are not to be missed.

She is a Sony recording artist and much sought after as a soloist and recital singer.

Ken Murray, well known guitarist, has a special interest in the music of Spain, South America and contemporary Australia. Their program will feature music from Spain (de Falla), Brazil (Villa Lobos), England (Britten) and Australia.

This spring The Graduate Union is putting on their first Big Spring Clean for the Brotherhood of St Laurence!

Donation bins will be set up in the games room from September 17th for resident and non-resident members to donate any good quality clothing, bric-a-brac, shoes, books, furniture or white goods that are no longer needed.

All donations will go towards the Brotherhood of St Laurence which strives for a poverty-free Australia. Donations will either go to the Brotherhood’s 23 community stores, their Hunter Gatherer store for vintage clothing or directly to people in need.

Organising of the event was extremely easy. Complete information provided from the very beginning. All enquiries answered promptly and courteously. The function room suited our needs and it was appropriately set up with lectern, table and AV for the meeting, and having the food at tables at the other end, with room for circulation, was just right. The quality and quantity of food was good. (CEO note:- Thanks Solo for your specific suggestions on our catering menu. Quality control is ensuing). Staff were very helpul. Both Rosie and Bill were great and we look forward to having another function at Graduate House.

Enquiries are managed efficiently, as in the confirmation of venue. Function room absolutely suited us. Staff as always terrific and the entire team was extremely helpful!

Melbourne Material Institute - MMI Research workshop

Organising our workshop at Graduate House (GH) was a very simple and straightforward process.

We really appreciated the fact that GH met all our needs by providing a venue, catering and AV equipment. The GH staff we dealt with were very organised, friendly and helpful. They have also been very accommodating of our needs and late changes. The rooms were perfectly suited to our needs. Food quantity was perfectly fine. Our attendees thought the food was good. GH staff were extremely helpful, well prepared and very competent. We are very pleased with the service they provided, both before and during the event. It would be good if video-recording was available, as both attendees and invitees unable to attend have expressed their interest in being able to view the presentations (again).

The Melbourne Materials Institute research workshop held annually to prepare for the Interdisciplinary Seed Funding (IDSF) round, brings together researchers and external partners to discuss material challenges and to foster submission of innovative, interdisciplinary and eligible proposals. In 2012, over 90 participants from 19 organisations across academia, research and industry attended, including 19 speakers on themes of energy, materials processing, quantum and nanophotonics materials, materials conservation, drug and vaccine delivery, and tissue engineering and regenerative materials.

PHILLIP LAW DINNER Frederick Winton Elliot honoured members and guests at the Phillip Law Dinner with historical and behind-the-scenes stories of his friend and colleague. The following short version of this presentation, in first person and with references to ‘Phil’ peppered throughout, is in keeping with this gentle evening of intimate narrative and personal insights. A more complete version of this talk will be in the upcoming edition of The Melbourne Graduate.

For Phil the opportunity for adventure came when Sir Douglas Mawson urged the Australian Government to send an expedition south to establish a scientific base, so that Australia’s claim to a slice of Antarctica might be better recognised, especially in view of Norwegian and American exploration in the area. Mawson advised Phil to re-establish his old base at Macquarie Island and the British were eager for Australia to take over its claim to Heard Island, to forestall a possible American claim.

Dr Herbert (Doc) Evatt, Minister for External Affairs, became enthusiastic about the scheme and an Executive Committee on Exploration and Exploitation of the area claimed by Australia formed under the auspices of the Department of External Affairs, decided that Group Captain Stuart Campbell, who had been the pilot with Mawson on the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) be seconded from the Department of Civil Aviation to become the Executive Officer of the expedition.

Following Sir Douglas’ suggestion for a refit of HMAS Whyatt Earp, Phil, in his capacity as Senior Scientific Officer (appointed July, 1947), went to Adelaide to ensure adequate space on the vessel for scientific work. This was successful but the sail on her back to Melbourne led to Phil passing out with seasickness on a deck coil of rope and having to be Members and guest at the 2012 Phillip Law Dinner carried below. Phil was not a good sailor, but he never made that an excuse for not fully carrying out his workload. He was a most determined person.

Phil persuaded the Government to charter the Kista Dan for the 1954 season - and so began a remarkable association between ANARE and the Lauritzen Line which lasted for thirty years, the last ship being the M.V. Nella Dan named after Phil’s wife, Nell.

The Kista Dan made an Antarctic station feasible. With Phil on board, it called in at Heard Island to collect five of us from the 1953 Heard Island party and was then sailed to the French base at Kerguelen before heading south to set up Mawson station. On the way home we picked up the rest of our Heard Island crew and then went back to Kerguelen before returning to Melbourne. asked me “Doctor Law, he is your Director?” I confirmed this. “But you do not show him any respect. When we wish to speak to Commandant M. Armengaud, we make an appointment. But you, you people just call out, ‘Hey Phil!’” He did not seem to understand that our respect for Phil was personal, nothing to do with rank. Or perhaps Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité lose something in translation into Australian.

Phil’s infectious enthusiasm was a vital element in gathering around him people who willingly worked long hours at the ANARE headquarters in Melbourne and at the Stations. George Smith, Lem Macey and Dick Thompson come to mind from that time towards the end of 1952. They were loyal, but by no means servile.

Sometimes Phil’s enthusiasm reached the “Gung Ho” category. One example of this was just after Operation Highjump” which the Americans taking photographs from aircraft carriers in one hit of almost all of the Antartic coastline. Phil was keen to get accurate fixes on land features shown in these photographs (such as Mawson base in one selected photograph). In simply getting to the first stop, Scullin Monolithg, it had taken us almost six hours to free the Kista from the newly frozen sea at Mawson base.

Arriving at the ‘fix’ site, Second Mate Bill Pederson rowed Jim Brooks, Dick Thompson, Dr Arthur Gwynn and Phil towards the rock to find that a high ledge of ice attached to the rock prevented them from getting ashore. Phil was all for making a flying leap, but Dick told him not to be a bloody fool. Phil took Dick’s advice. I note though, in my diary entry for the day, that there was a fairly heated exchange on the deck when they returned to the Kista.

The most serious case of excess enthusiasm occurred not long after when Phil insisted a very late season voyage to unchartered waters at the Vestfold Hills where Davis base now stands. Under severe hurricane winds, Kista Dan broached to over seventy degrees to port. Our remaining Auster had to be cut loose, an arduous and debilitating painful task undertaken by Bill whose hands were so frozen by leaking petrol that he could not write for a month. Down below in cramped quarters the Fourth Engineer cleared slush ice from the engine water intake which the list had brought to the surface. It was such a terrifying experience that he never got over it. He never went to sea again.

To honour the bequest from Dr Phillip Law, a benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has donated a sculpture relief by Michael Meszaros for display in the newly named Phillip Law Members Lounge. The design reflects the ‘path cutting’ of Dr Law in both the Antarctic (chunks of ice at the front) and through the difficulties he encountered - bereaucracy, lack of funding, politics, etc. The path leads from back to front, cutting through each abstract barrrier, to the final horizon of a range of natural hills. On each side of the path, the modified elements symbolise Dr Law’s effect in forging ahead and changing.

Later, Phil admitted he had made a grave error of judgement and put lives in jeopardy.

I once heard him say that he had never been so terrified, not just for his own safety, but for the future of Australia in Antarctica.

Indeed we were reminded of what could happen in 1958 when the sister ship of the Thalla Dan disappeared with all hands in the North Atlantic.

Most of us though will remember a relaxed and happy Phil sitting, cigar in mouth, in the smoke-filled saloon, leading the singing with his piano accordion, cartons of Tuborg and Carlsberg skidding round the deck as the Kista rolled, making it an interesting operation trying to open a well-shaken can without spraying half of it on the deckhead.

“Hey Phil! Can you play Smoke Gets in Your Eyes?” yells out someone and starts to sing it while Phil valiantly attempts to find the right pitch and key to suit the voice. Luckily he was a very good musician.

At Phil’s 90th birthday celebration one of the speakers said, “There were many times when we could have screwed the little bugger’s neck, but we are all here because of him.”

And so we are tonight.

Rachel’s charity is Headspace – Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation, which provides young people with access to general health, mental health, counselling, education, employment, and alcohol and drug services.

Angela will be running for the National Stroke Foundation, a cause which is close to her heart.

SUNDAY MUSIC CONCERT reviewed

Members and guests enjoyed an informal concert on the 19th of August given by the jazz trio Pep Talk, established last year by students from the Victorian College of the Arts. This was led by Pepita Emmerichs on violin with Lincoln McKenzie on guitar and Stephen Hornby on bass. They played a lively program of mainly gypsy jazz or hot club jazz, which began with Grapelli and Reinhardt in Paris of the 30s.

The concert included the musicians’ own arrangements of some familiar jazz standards like the Gershwin classic Lady be Good, Ain’t Misbehavin’, a swinging Sweet Georgia Brown as well as beautiful quieter songs. We also strayed to Brazil with Tico Tico. In each number the original tune was played first, followed by individual improvised solos. Pepi introduced each item and we were able to ask questions and learn more about the music. Much of the concert can be viewed on a video on our website : www.graduatehouse.com.au.

A splendid afternoon tea followed, giving us the opportunity of meeting the performers and talking to old and new friends.

The last Sunday concert for this year will be on the 21st of October and given by Greta Bradman, the wonderful and engaging young soprano. She will be accompanied by well known guitarist Ken Murray in a program of mainly Spanish and South American music. Hope to see you there!

Bethlehem Griffiths Research Foundation’s 2012 Young Researcher of the Year Award Life Member of The Graduate Union, Dr Bruce Campbell has been awarded the Bethlehem Griffiths Research Foundation’s 2012 Young Researcher of the Year Award. The award is in respect of Dr Campbell’s research in the use of advanced imaging to improve the understanding and treatment of stroke.

Professor Stephen Davis, who presented the award on behalf of the Foundation, said of Dr Campbell, “I would place him at the absolute top rung of young clinical researchers.”

Bleeding into the brain is rare after stroke treatment but can have serious consequences for the patient.

Results from Dr Campbell’s research have shed new light on the selection of treatments for acute stroke, indicating which patients are likely to benefit and those where treatment should be avoided due to increased risk of cerebral haemorrhage.

Dr Campbell has also played a vital role in identifying stroke damage using CT scanners. This new approach reduces the need for MRI imaging which is often too difficult to access rapidly.

Accepting his award, Dr Campbell acknowledged the support of his supervisors Professor Stephen Davis, Professor Patricia Desmond and Professor Mark Parsons as well as his colleague Dr Soren Christensen. Dr Campbell understands that this type of research depends on a good team over a sustained period. He is a great mentor for neurological trainees and a gifted and enthusiastic teacher contributing his time and talents to rural teaching initiatives in stroke.

The Bethlehem Griffiths Research Foundation was established in 1994 through a bequest from the Estate of the late Mr Glen W A Griffiths, in appreciation for the care he received at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem for motor neuron disease.

Melbourne University Open Day

19th August, 2012

In conjunction with the Open Day at The University of Melbourne, we at Graduate House opened our doors to welcome prospective members from the entourage of parents, carers, relatives and friends.

A stretch of Grattan Street was closed to traffic with stalls being set up in University Square all the way to the University entrance. Amongst the stalls were organisations such as UniLodge and Army recruitment.

Staff arrived from 8.00am to blow up balloons, prepare displays of our Graduate Union merchandise - hoodies, caps, vests and pullovers - prepare the bar and, of course, the mandatory sausage sizzle (gold coin donations went to the Brotherhood of St Laurence).

Trays of sausages taken over to University Square by Rosie and Diana were quickly snapped up and facilitated the streaming of people in search of the BBQ source. Chair of Council, Mr David Sparks provided formal welcomes and lead people through our doors.

Back in Graduate House, staff were kept busy conducting regular tours for potential graduate resident and nonresident members. To those reading this newsletter who visited on that day, we hope that you enjoyed this introduction to our Carlton gem and that you will return.

Dr Palmer’s talk covered the more significant cultural changes in postwar Melbourne, a time when many European refugees immigrated and introduced Australia to the “modern” in art, architecture, literature and education. It was this influence which raised Australia’s international standards whilst at the same time strengthened multiculturalism.

In her view, Dr Palmer felt that this postwar period gave direction to Australia’s existing modernists such as Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Noel Counihan and John and Sunday Reed.

Gino Nibbi, an Italian, was one of these more notable émigrés who had a crucial presence from early 1930s to the post-war period. He established the Leonardo Art Shop at 170 Little Collins Street where he sold quality Australian and international literature, reproductions and postcards. This bookshop became an oasis for artists, writers and Europhiles who were more than happy to have his tastes imposed upon them.

Several Australians were important in turning the conservative cultural climate in Australia.

Basil Burdett, a well-informed art collector, was one of the most astute and best remembered for organizing the Herald Exhibition of French and British Contemporary Art in 1939, giving both Australian artists and the public a chance to engage with post-impressionist and modern paintings not experienced before in this nation.

Between 1919 and 1933 many German and Austrian émigrés arrived in Australia, urged to get out of Germany before war was declared. Following the war the architects and photographers amongst them were particularly sought after in Melbourne and would document the dramatic growth and prosperity of the country. (Wolfgang Sievers would in turn do the same for the rape of the land and dispossession of the indigenous people by the mining companies. He eventually refused industrial commissions and became a major activist for humanitarian issues).

With the influences which had come into Melbourne, the city became an active commercial hub for textile, industrial, graphic and furniture design. The performing arts were also given a new lease of life with the likes of Erwin Rado, a concert pianist who was to later become a dominant figure in the Melbourne Film Festival. Likewise, Edouard Borovansky arrived in 1938 and is acknowledged as the man who made Australian ballet.

After the Second World War, Melbourne was in a wave of reconstruction. Australian art and education were reinvigorated at both secondary and tertiary levels. More European refugees applied to enter Australia and were accepted in the 1950s. This was described by Dr Palmer as one of the most exciting revisionist phases in Australia. After the war, the explosion in art and culture was replaced by a return to the pre-war civilian life with women returning to the home. Of course there were some notable exceptions. Helen Ogilvie managed Stanly Coe’s interior design shop in Bourke Street which represented established and emerging artists and developed a market for modernist art. This lead to a new breed of collector from a new generation. New galleries opened. Even the Women’s Weekly offered a major portrait prize worth £1,500 for the best portrait by a woman. This was the first time many people could afford to buy an original work of art.

PHILIP MURPHY

Raised in Hong Kong to an Australian family I did all my schooling in Hong Kong before gaining my first degree in Law at the University of Kent at Canterbury (UK) followed by a Theology degree through the University of Southampton (UK).

For nineteen years I then worked with the Anglican Church, first of all in England, before moving back to Australia to work in Benalla and then Fitzroy. During my time at Fitzroy I led St Mark’s Community Centre Fitzroy into a partnership with Anglicare Victoria, allowing for this excellent service to the homeless in the City of Yarra to expand the services on offer and provide an improved staffing structure.

In 2010 I accepted the position of Executive Officer at Catchment Youth Services Inc. This organisation runs Philip Murphy programmes for young homeless people in Victoria (aged 16 to 25 years of age, many with children) through crisis accommodation and early intervention. It was during this time that I was appointed to the Ministerial Advisory Council on Homelessness.

I am delighted to have begun work at The Graduate Union as Secretariat and Content Manager and look forward to meeting many of you in the near future.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

9th August 2012

A very successful 100th Annual General Meeting was held on the 9th August, 2012 with 68 members in attendance. We were pleased to present to members reports on the significant achievements in governance reform and in running our sound business over the last 14 months and to have the Financial Report for the year ended 31st December, 2011 accepted. Following the announcement of the election results by the Returning Officer, Mr Ron Ritchie, we welcomed back to Council Mr Andre Cleghorn, Mr Kingsley Davis, Dr Jane McKellar and Mrs Glenda Fisher. We acknowledged the contributions of retiring Councillors Dr Christopher Booth and Mr David Eyres, who did not seek re-election this year. (I am pleased to inform you that, subsequent to the AGM, Mr Eyres will continue on as a member of the Membership Committee and of the Sunday Music Committee). The resignations of Dr D Bellair, Mr A Binns, Dr R Gibson and Dr R Weber were acknowledged.

Members in the audience at the AGM provided sound advice and suggestions to which I respond as follows: Council is meeting over two days of retreat (one on the 22nd September and the other early October) to advance the strategic plan, to construct detailed business plans and to advance the formulation of new Rules and Regulations. Key to our sustainability will be our ability to manage our debts and the business. Council is thus looking at loan consolidation and refinancing options, together with strategies to maintain and grow income through existing and new channels. We are also in the process of forming a Benefaction Working Party.

In terms of governance, we shall discuss matters relating to the number of people on Council, terms of appointment, co-option to Council, attendance of members as observers at meetings and access to company documents, including minutes and the Register of Members. In this newsletter we have included an invitation to members to have themselves listed on a ‘pool’ of people who we may co-opt for specific projects or working parties. Please let us know how you want to contribute. We are also following up on the invitation from member John Farrell to speak to members on how they can contribute to our mission of engaging in intellectual and social stimulation for the wider community of The Graduate Union members.

We endeavour to respond to all suggestions for member functions and events and although we have increased the number of evening events this year we are currently looking at options to further increase the number of evening events so that those members who have day time commitments may be better positioned to attend; and at different speakers and content areas of interest to a greater number of members and their guests.
