On February 24, Jim Dicks, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9334 in Vilseck, gave a very vivid presentation about soul food to his young listeners at the Netzaberg Teen Center. Dicks wanted the students to hear and experience something they have never read in a history book before and so, first of all, he divided the audience in black and white kids to give them a slight idea of what segregation meant and how it worked. He told them about the different schools black and white children had to attend in former times and that black people were not allowed to use the same water fountains white people used.

Then Dicks explained that soul food was poor people’s food that was supposed to make the black slaves’ souls feel good. He said that black people were artists in the kitchen and so they became very creative and cooked delicious meals from the left-overs they got from their white masters. Finally, he let the children try the wonderful chicken wings and cornbread the ladies of the teen center’s cafeteria had cooked for them as an example of soul food.

“Nature in Tirschenreuth 2013” – Garden Show in the Land of the 1000 Lakes Preparations will begin soon Story by

Renate Gradl Tirschenreuth. In 2013, history and future will come together in Tirschenreuth thanks to the horticultural show “Nature in Tirschenreuth 2013“ which will fill a lake that has been dried out for 200 years with new life. There has been an island in the Land of the Thousand Lakes for more than 200 years that has not been surrounded by water. The socalled “Fischhofinsel” (Fish Yard Island) once was the home of the farm of the abbots of Waldsassen and was surrounded by a lake covering 120 hectare. When the lake was drained in 1807, the Fischhofbrücke (Fish Yard Bridge) was also left high and dry. To recreate a piece of the past for the future, the idea of a horticultural show named “Nature in Tirschenreuth 2013“ was born. The intent of the horticultural show is to partially recultivate the old lake and bring it back to life. To achieve that, a six hectare-large city lake will partially surround Fish Yard Island and fully surround Fish Yard Bridge.

Our photo shows Tirschenreuth‘s city pond with the Fish Yard Bridge.

built hotel, and a restaurant with a lake terrace invite visitors to stay. The new stress ribbon bridge is an architectural highlight and the new direct link between downtown and the fish yard area. The horticultural show focuses on nature as an event and on the interaction with water. A lot of exciting activities will be offered for kids and teenagers to discover and enjoy. They can climb up King

Carps, conquer fish traps, or explore willow hideouts in the newly built water playground “Fischer’s Fritz.“ A skating park near the outdoor pool will provide fun for older children and teenagers of the region. Besides new construction, the horticultural show will also focus on culture. During the exhibition, various events will be offered every day. Whether you’re a hobby gar-

dener, nature lover, or architectural enthusiast – the horticultural show will be a unique and inspirational place that will release energy and creativity in all visitors. If you want to get an idea of the concept before the show starts, you are cordially invited to the construction site fest on Sept. 9, 2012. Afterwards, the area will be closed for the public until the show opens on May 29, 2013.

The horticultural show will eliminate an inner city problem area and turn it into an idyllic park scenery in front of Tirschenreuth’s skyline. Where once a brewery and a construction company dominated the scenery, the 20 hectare-large horticultural show grounds will display its colorful flowerage on May 29, 2013. The show grounds “Nature in Tirschenreuth 2013“ can be reached from the old town by foot within a minutes. Once there, various gardening highlights, the newly

Grafenwöhr Griffins start 2012 Season in Bavarian Division III Story by

Christian Schärtl The League Due to their championship in Bavarian Division IV last year, the Grafenwöhr Griffins have advanced to Division III in the 2012 season. This division consists of ten teams, so the Bavarian Football League had to divide them up into a “Northern Conference” and a “Southern Conference”. Grafenwoehr is part of the southern conference. There, they’re going to play against the Traunreut Munisiers, the Passau Pirates, the Erding Bulls and the Rosenheim Rebels. Two interconference games against the Hof Jokers and the Bayreuth Dragons from the northern conference are also planned. The first and second place team from each conference advance to the play offs. The Grafenwoehr Griffins already know their opponents, except for Erding and Rosenheim. Hof did a training camp together with the Griffins, Traunreut and Bayreuth also played in Division IV in 2011 and against Passau they lost twice in their very first year. The Griffin’s first game is in Rosenheim on April 14 against the Rebels.

The Grafenwoehr Griffins are ready for the new season.

But not only the players are prepping for the games. The Griffin’s coaching staff is also always working to improve themselves. Head coach James D. Miller, got the Blicense just in time for the 2012 season. To get that, he attended an 80-hour-course which ended with a written exam and a presentation. The license allows Miller to teach American football in sports classes at German schools. That’s one thing they’re trying to do soon. Two games, one against the Black Pirates from Oberviechtach and the Bamberg Phantoms, which will both be part of the Bavarian Division IV, are also planned. A three-day training camp one week before the season starts will do the fine-tuning.

BMW Hybrid Power featured in new 5-Series Full Hybrid Power comes to the 5 Series Sedan BMW today announced the introduction of its newest hybrid, the 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5. Based on the BMW 535i Sedan, the ActiveHybrid 5 brings together BMW ’s 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine, an electric drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission for the first time. The latest generation of BMW ActiveHybrid technology also adds precisely controlled energy management to the mix. All of which gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 an exceptional balance of performance and fuel economy for a benchmark performance/luxury sedan. Its drive system generates combined output of 335 hp (DIN), allows the car to be driven on electric power alone up to 37 mph (60 km/h), and accelerates the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds (preliminary). The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 will arrive as a 2012 model in US showrooms in March 2012. The 300 hp inline six with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the same engine renowned for its free-revving capability, pulling power and efficiency in the BMW 535i. The electric motor develops 55 hp and is supplied with energy by a high-performance lithiumion battery housed in the trunk. A harmonious blend of power from the two drive systems ensures that the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 boasts not only the sportiest performance in its market segment but also a double-digit percentage improvement in fuel economy over the BMW 535i based on preliminary results. full-hybrid drive system enables driving on purely electric power which means emission-free driving in urban conditions. In order to fully exploit the potential of the BMW ActiveHybrid technology, the power electronics in the BMW

ActiveHybrid 5 use a host of technologies to ensure the drive system runs at peak efficiency. The high-performance lithium-ion battery is charged when the car is coasting or braking. The electric motor acts as a generator feeding energy into the high-voltage battery.

By contrast, under acceleration the electric motor takes on a boost function. Here, it assists the inline six by generating an extra burst of power, lending the sedan’s sporty driving character a noticeably sharper edge.

Driving Dynamics Control is an ECO PRO mode. It provides a relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style by tailoring the driving systems for maximum efficiency, including making more frequent use of all-electric mode. To avoid periods with the engine running at idle – at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, for example – the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is equipped with a hybrid startstop function. Plus, the power electronics in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 are linked up with the standard navigation system. This allows proactive analysis of driving conditions based on the selected route. This enables the drive components to be primed to deliver maximum efficiency (the effect may vary according to the quality of the available navigation data). All the hybrid-specific components of the drive technology and energy management systems have been developed specially for use in the BMW ActiveHybrid 5.
