Presentation of the 2nd Edition of the Training Area Book in the Culture- and Military Museum Story by
Gerald Morgenstern Grafenwoehr. During the ceremony celebrating the 25-year-old German-american partnership in the areas of integrated training area management and environmental and nature protection, author Gerald Morgenstern presented the second edition of his bi-lingual book “Grafenwoehr training area, yesterday – today.“ The 100th anniversary of the training area was the reason for Grafenwoehr resident Gerald Morgenstern to publish his book “Grafenwoehr Training Area, yesterday – today.“ Now, the supplemented second edition has been published. The book with its 256 pages and nearly 700 photos now contains a chapter about the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the training area, and information and photos about the city of Grafenwoehr and its 650th anniversary celebration. Photos, information and web addresses of the city of Vilseck and Neustadt an der Waldnaab and AmbergSulzbach Counties are especially intended to provide American soldiers and their families with an opportunity to learn more about their “home away from home“ and keep fond memories of it. The chapters on the 2d Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck and the 172d Infantry Brigade in Grafenwoehr were also expanded in the new edition. The commanders from Grafenwoehr and Vilseck provided their greetings as well as the Commanding General of the US-Army in Europe, Lt. Gen. Mark P. Hertling. Information about the book are available online at www.graftrainingareabook.com . County Commissioner Simon Wittmann, the mentor of the book, received a copy of the first printing of the new edition of the book. Additional copies were presented to Mayor Helmuth Wächter and the JMTC and garrison representatives.

Rudacille: “Overcoming difficulites together“ US Army Garrison and Joint Multinational Training Command hosted New Year’s Reception Story by
Gerald Morgenstern Grafenwoehr. “reminisce on the events of 2011, and look forward to the year that awaits us,“ was what col. bryan l. rudacille invited guests to do at the new Year’s reception. the JMtc commander was also confident that “all difficulties could be overcome together.“ about 250 guests had honored the invitation of JMtc and the us army Garrison Grafenwoehr, commanded until mid-January by acting commander Kathy aydt. First, the JMTC and garrison commanders wished everybody a happy New Year in the receiving line, then Col. Rudacille mentioned various events in his speech: The garrison re-deployed the 2nd Cavalry Regiment last summer from their successful year-long combat rotation in

Afghanistan. The Blackhawk Soldiers of the 172nd Infantry Brigade deployed in July to Afghanistan and remain significant contributors to the security mission in theater. “While Soldiers were deployed, our Families demonstrated great resolve and resiliency in their absence; thanks in no small part
to the wonderful support of our outstanding garrison agencies, and of course our German neighbors,“ said Rudacille. “The coming year shows great promise, but it does not come without challenge as each of nations will be tested by changes in our militaries, while also facing the fiscal realities of our economies. While we may experience temporary
difficulties and momentary struggles, I have full faith that together, we can overcome any adversity; together, we will do what is right for our nations; together, we will enjoy the fruits of our labor,“ commented Rudacille on respective announcements about changes on Grafenwoehr Training Area.

„Iron Panzer“ on Range 301 German Army Tank Battalion 104 and US Cavalry Regiment conduct live-fire exercise Story by
Gerald Morgenstern Grafenwoehr/VilsecK/ PfreiMD. tank battalion 104 from Pfreimd and the 2d us cavalry regiment from Vilseck named their first joint live-fire exercise„iron Panzer.“The tankers from Pfreimd and the soldiers from 3rd squadron,2cr used their leopard battel tanks and the stryker Mobile Gun system on range 301, south of Kirchenthumbach. The proximity between the German Army units belonging to Germany’s Tank Brigade 12 „Oberpfalz“ and the US units in Vilseck and Grafenwöhr was one of the decisive factors why the German Army installations in the Oberpfalz region remained almost untouched by the recent transformation of the German Armed Forces. Grafenwoehr Training Area,an excellent training facility, is located very close to the German installations and jointly used by German and US troops. Since 2009, Tank Battalion 104 from Pfreimd is partnered with the 2d US Cavalry Regiment. To date, The partnership program consisted of joint exercises, small weapons ranges, marches and events. For the first time now, the heavy weapons systems of the battalion

from Pfreimd, the last remaining German tank battalion in Southern Germany, and the 3rd Squadron 2CR, known as the “Wolfpack,“ came together for a live-fire training on range 301. Each company fired its Leopard 2 A6 tanks and Stryker Mobile Gun Systems (MGS) on Europe’s largest,computer-operated range. Compared to the Leopard with its 120 millimeter canon and a weight of about 62 tons, the Stryker MGS is a very light weapons system. However, both systems are absolutely compatible with regard to their fire power. The German range control soldiers from the Office of the German Military Representative supervised the training which was also met with heavy media interest and was observed by a delegation of Turkish soldiers. At the end of the exercise, both unit commanders were very satisfied with

Two years ago, the Project Group Fasching Parade was turned into the “Eschenbacher Fasching Association 2006“ to foster the traditions of Bavarian Fasching. The most important task of the club is to train the guard dancers and to put together a Fasching Parade every two years. This year, the parade is held again and starts with a black powder shot on Saturday, February 11 at 1.30 p.m. The parade assembles on Jahnstraße, in front of the hospital. Then it goes down Stadtberg and turns around at the fire department and breaks up in front of the police station. The Fasching Association is

Delicious Pastries for the Fasching Days The jelly donut is in season again (djd/pt).You can hear a joyful “helau“ or “alaaf“ everywhere and people clad in fancy costumes roam the streets. it’s fasching time. carnival speeches and fasching parades with lovely decorated floats are just as much a part of fasching as the traditional jelly donut, depending on the region, also known as “berliner“ or “Kräbbel.“ filled with rose hip jelly In Franconia, the yeast donuts are traditionally filled with rose hip jelly. It’s considered a delicacy by many jelly donut fans. The jelly is made from wild, ripe, sparkling red rose hips that are harvested in the fall. During fasching time, they are bestsellers in the bakeries. But you can also bake them yourself, of course. baking jelly donuts Crumble one block of yeast into a bowl and stir in 100 ml lukewarm milk and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Add approx. 150 g flour
and mix it to turn it into a dough. Spread some flour on the dough, cover it with a towel and put it in a warm place to let it rise. Now mix 70 g sugar, 2 eggs and 2 egg yolks and add it to the dough along with 1/4 l milk, 350 g flour, 75 g butter and a dash of salt. Knead thoroughly. Cover the dough and let it rise for 45 minutes. Divide the dough into 12 pieces, form them into a ball, flatten them, cover them and let them rise for another 45 minutes until they have doubled in size. Heat 1 kg shortening in a large pot to 175 degrees centigrade and bake each donut in it for about five minutes on each side until they have a golden color. Put them on a paper towel, allowing them to drain. Now use an icing bag to fill the donut with rose hip jelly. Sprinkle powdered sugar on the donut, if you like.

dition. But nobody knows for sure who invented the sweet pastry. The Romans, for example, baked a greasy pastry which they called globuli (little balls). According to another story, the jelly donut was invented in Vi-
a pastry with a long tradition This yeast pastry has a long tra-
enna by baker Cäcilie Krapf who around 1690 is said to have sold a very popular pastry known as “Cilli balls“ in her store. The tasty yeast balls were filled with preserved fruit.

a trip for two to London, the city of the “Swinging Sixties.“ Admittance is 15 Euro. Tickets are available online at www.okticket. de, or at all ticket agencies.
Story by
norbert schmieglitz who doesn’t remember the music of the sixties, the fashion trends and the great atmosphere during the “cola balls?“ On Monday, February 20, 2012 at 8 p.m., this feeling will become reality again for a few hours. Following the very successful premiere of the 60s Revival Party in 2011, you can rock and dance like you did in the Sixties on Rose Monday. The matching music will be provided once again by three well-known live bands “BACK BEAT“, “Connection2Rock“ and “Lower Market,“ that will play the best songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s around the clock. Powder snow, sunshine, no waiting lines at the ski lifts: these are the ideal conditions for a perfect day on the slopes. but that’s not all that counts: skiers and snowboarders should also keep an eye on safety. this starts with the equipment. according to a report by br-online, today every second adult wears a helmet on the slopes. children below the age of 14 are required to wear a helmet. but not every winter sports enthusiast has his or her skis checked by a specialist every year, has the edges sharpened, or the binding newly adjusted. Guaranteed safety If you rent skis and snowboards on location, you will definitely get material that has been checked for safety and will be individually adjusted to your needs. That’s the guarantee given by rental companies such as Sport 2000 rent whose shops can be found in almost all ski resorts, located always directly adjacent to the slopes. With 600

locations spread across Andorra, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic, it is the largest winter sports equipment rental company in Europe. All shops are regularly checked by the TÜV Süd safety organization and certified in accordance with EN ISO 9001. Only the most modern, electronic testing devices are used when bindings are adjusted. And the local experts provide competent advice and select the perfect equipment for every customer. save cash Available for rent are skis, snow-
boards and other fun sports items, helmet, protectors, shoes - and always the most current models of the season. Information about all available items can be found online at www. sport2000rent.at. If you rent your skis, you can take the ski box off your car and save cash. If you only spend a few days every year on the slopes, it is better and cheaper to rent skis. In many shops, children up to the age of ten are equipped for free if one adult books a regular rental package. If equipment is booked online, a 15 percent discount applies.

Griffin wins bronze medal at the World Championships Story by
Christian Schärtl Grafenwoehr’s football team is based upon the athletic abilities of its individual players. Among the Griffins there are track and field specialists, soccer players, weight lifters, volleyball players and martial artists. But one player stands out because he’s doing his sport Ju-Jitsu on the highest international level and reached third place in this year’s world championships: Jonas Butz. We met with the O-Line and D-Line player to talk to him about his success, his motivation and the sport in general. Hello,Jonas! First off, congratulations! How do you feel after such a successful participation in a world championship?
Jonas Butz, bronze medal winner of the 2011 Ju-Jitsu World Championships.
and always remember to treat peers with respect and kindness.
Well, I am very proud to have even taken part in a world championship and that I won a medal is of course for me personally the perfect ending of a great year of competitions. Of course afterwards you think that you could have done this or that a little better, but I don’t think I need to tell this someone that has done any sport before.
YouplayfootballwiththeGriffins. Does your martial arts sport help you with that?
How many fights did you have? How many did you win? How many did you lose? How high was your chance to win first place?
Where do you picture yourself five years from now?
In my case, there were only seven people of my age and weight class. I lost my first fight. Then I got a bye and went straight to the fight for third place. I won that one.
It definitively does.It helps me with the physical fitness that I need for football and also tackle technique, which is very similar to a throw in martial arts. These similarities work vice versa.

Honestly:Which sport is tougher and which is more painful? How tough a sport is, every athlete has to answer for himself. I mean, if you want to be good in a sport, you have to give all you’ve got. This is
sometimes hard and then it doesn’t matter which sport you’re doing. But football usually is more painful. Thank you, Jonas, for your time. This success story is a wonderful example that all kinds of athletes can be enthused about American Football. If you are interested in trying out this team sport, get in touch with the Grafenwoehr Griffins on Facebook, or contact the head coach at headcoach@ grafenwoehr-griffins.de.

What got you started with JuJitsu? And what was the main motivation that got you this far? It started with my dad telling me that there’s a new Ju-Jitsu club starting up nearby.I went there right away.I started about one and a half or two years ago with Ju-Jitsu competitions. That was about the time when the Grafenwoehr Griffins started. It may sound funny, but the hard training with the Griffins motivated me to start with competitive fighting. The ambition to improve is very important for me. But one must never stop having fun
I just hope that I can continue to practise my sports as I do right now and don’t have to cut back too much due to my work. But of course I want to move up with the Griffins and with Ju-Jitsu. I would like to take part in a seniors’world championship or European championship.

The special-edition model is also delivered with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a six-speed automatic features in the options range. The MINI Bayswater takes its name from an extremely vibrant area of London. Located to the west of the city center – halfway between the shopping hot spots of Knightsbridge and Notting Hill – Bayswater is best known for its unusually high density of bars and restaurants, not to mention the adjacent and no less famous Hyde Park. MINI is therefore returning to the London theme to further accentuate
the link with both its home country and the fascination surrounding the London lifestyle. Indeed, both the MINI Bayswater and MINI Baker Street are following in the tire tracks of a naming tradition begun by the classic Mini and reprised more recently with the MINI Camden, MINI Mayfair and MINI Clubman Hampton special editions.
