Improving Garmisch Family and MWR Facilities The dust is beginning to settle on one construction project while two others get underway. The renovation of the Family and MWR Building (#250), across from the Consolidated Mail Room and Post Office, is nearing the end. Family and MWR Director, Business Operations, Marketing, and Administrative personnel will move from Building 236, aka the “Baby Burke, to the second floor offices sometime in July or August. With the staff moving out of Building 236, this will free up space for small community gatherings, briefings, and other activities. In addition, when the renovations are completed, Outdoor Recreation (ODR), and Tours and Trips, will be relocating to the first floor. On April 18, the Pete Burke Community Center closed for renovations. Preparation for the renovation included the removal of the old patio, removing kitchen appliances, relocation of storage, and placing the fencing around the construction area. The contractor is now on site beginning the construction phase of the project. This will include expanding the main hall by incorporating the small conference room and old kitchen. An addition to the west end of the building will house a commercial kitchen, an improved and expanded patio, as well as additional storage space. While construction is taking place, the Community Library, Outdoor Recreation, and the Bikes and Boards shop remain open for business. Another project beginning this summer is the modification to the road and parking area near the Mueller Fitness Center. The parking on both sides of the road directly behind Building 109 will be eliminated. The current parking lot will increase by four spots. This project will improve traffic flow and reduce the number of minor accidents. As we continue with our improvements, we ask you to pardon the dust as we renovate for the future. We, the Garmisch Family and MWR staff, will continue to provide you with the top-notch services you expect.

Unauthorized Child Care According to Army Regulations unauthorized care is prohibited in government-owned or leased housing. Unauthorized care is defined as individuals who are providing care for children in their own home, other than their own, for more than 10 child care hours a week. Providing unauthorized care in government – owned or leased housing could result in loss of housing privileges. Army policy requires identification of unauthorized child care in home settings and assists parents in finding alternative care within the CYSS program. The individual offering the unauthorized care may apply for Family Child Care certification, but may not care for children until requirements for FCC Provisional Certification are complete. As a certified FCC provider you will be making the choice of caring for children in a manner most preferred by child care users/patrons. As a certified provider you will be eligible for the following benefits: -No cost liability insurance -Utilization of equipment/Resource Library -Reimbursement for food expenditures -Marketable credentials/career advancement -Limited start-up costs -Ongoing professional training If you are interested in becoming a Family Child Care provider in the Grafenwoehr, Vilseck or surrounding areas please call the Family Child Care office at DSN 476-2783 or CIV 09662-83-2783.

Meet Belinda De Hart With over 20 years of professional violin performance and instruction experience, Belinda De Hart is well versed in Classical, Jazz, Blues and many other styles. Though she very carefully does not restrict herself to one performance genre, Mrs. De Hart has studied formally with some of the finest pedagogues and counts Stephani Grappelli, Eddie Venuti and Yo Yo Ma in her influences. She has performed professionally with Northwest Arkansas Symphony, Pine Bluff Symphony, the Conway Civic Orchestra, and the University of Central Arkansas Orchestra. She has managed a professional trio since 2002, and performed extensively with Bluegrass, Traditional Celtic, and Country bands in both live and studio environments. She was the director of the Central Arkansas Children’s Orchestra and has performed with the critically acclaimed Saturday Bohemian Orchestra. Belinda has composed music professionally for herself and performances on stage and for TV and Radio. Additionally, she believes that music can be both a vocation and an avocation, either to be played professionally, or simply because it enriches lives. Maestra De Hart, like so many other women, fell in love with a soldier, and moved to Grafenwoehr in 2010. Appalled at the 8 | Bavarian-American

lack of truly rigorous formal music opportunities for military children, she founded the Siren Strings Academy because, in her words, “The human race cannot afford to miss a Mozart, Beethoven or Willert simply because his father is a soldier. It’s not fair to the child, and it isn’t fair to humanity.” If you would like to enroll your 6-18 year old child in violin or cello classes with Mrs. De Hart, please contact Parent Central Services or register online. The monthly cost for 30 minutes a week is $85. Class is held Tuesdays and Thursdays in Netzaberg and Wednesdays at Rose Barracks. The SKIESUnlimited Program is currently offering the following classes for children and youth: Gymnastics, Dance, Tang Soo Do, Karate, Guitar, Violin, Piano, Culinary Arts, Kinder Musik, and Arts & Crafts. To sign up please contact Parent Central Services at DSN 475-6656/476-2760. You can also sign-up online at: https://webtrac.mwr.army.mil/webtrac/Grafenwoehrcyms.html

The Edge! Gets High School Athletes Ready for Competition

Golf Lessons

Every Tuesday throughout the summer, we will transport high school golfers to the Schwanhof golf course where they will receive instruction from John Gasper, the club’s resident pro. Each week’s 90 minute session will cover basics in swing mechanics, hand placement and footwork, proper club selection, and rules of the game. Overall, it is designed to be a fun experience that gives those high school golfers a terrific foundation that we hope will translate into success on the course in the coming season. And, of course, youth do not need to plan on playing on the high school’s golf team in the fall to participate; we’ll take anyone in grades 9-12 who wants to learn a sport that they can play for the rest of their lives.

Strength & Conditioning

For all high school athletes, regardless of their sport, the Edge! offers a summer Strength and Conditioning program that promises to have them ready before they ever step foot on the field, court or course this fall. The Strength and Conditioning program will run every Monday and Wednesday at the Grafenwoehr Physical Fitness Center, and transportation is provided from both the Rose Barracks and Netzaberg Youth Centers with return. Each session will last two hours and will combine Cross Fit workouts with speed and endurance work, sport-specific drills and scrimmages, and will conclude with group stretching and flexibility work. This program is a must for any high school athlete serious about improvement, and putting themselves in a position to not only earn a starting spot, but to help their team and their school to a possible European Championship! Both programs are FREE, and transportation is provided. For more information and to register, contact Parent Central Services at DSN 475-6656, CIV 09641-83-6656, or log on to https://webtrac.mwr.army.mil/webtrac/Grafenwoehrcyms.html.

For high school athletes, summer is the prime time to get their bodies ready for the fall sports season waiting for them when summer ends. To give those student-athletes a step up on the competition, the Edge! is offering a couple opportunities to improve their game.

What the F@#k Was That? That’s was people all over the world have been saying after seeing Evil Dead The Musical... the only musical in the world with a splatter zone. For those who don’t know, this hilarious live stage show takes all the elements of the cult classic horror films, Evil Dead 1, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness then combines them to make one of the craziest theatrical experiences of all time. Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons are telling bad jokes... and all to music. The songs in the show are completely off the wall as well. Titles like “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons” and “What the F*@k was That” will have you rolling in your seats, and screaming for more and more blood. You don’t need to be a fan of Evil Dead to love this show. You don’t need to be a fan of horror to love this show. You don’t even need to be a fan of musicals to love this show. As long as you like having fun... this show is for you. http://www. evildeadthemusical.com/

Powerlifting Championship

September 17 Powerlifting is composed of three lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Anyone who has ever worked out at a gym has either done bench presses or at least seen someone do them. Benches are so popular as you can handle greater weights in the bench press than any other upper body exercise. And they are a great exercise for chest, shoulder, and triceps development. If you feel as if you have what it takes to pump some Iron, stop by your local fitness center and sign up now!

You can be a part of the game and make some extra money on the side. The clinic will be in Grafenwoehr.

HHC ½ SCR returns from Deployment to defend their Crown The 2011 Unit Level May Madness Softball tournament took place 20-22 May at the softball complex in Grafenwoehr. With the weather driving us mad on Friday all games were canceled due to heavy rain flooding the fields. This meant all teams participating have a long day Saturday and Sunday to make up for the delay. Saturday morning play resumed with HHC ½ SCR starting the defense of their crown against C CO 1-2 IN. They quickly showed everyone they meant business by winning the game 12-0. Later in the day they would play again this time facing B CO 1-2 IN #2 and they would prove to be a greater challenge but in the end HHC ½ SCR was victorious winning 9-5 setting them up with one more game to win to advance to the championship game. Again,on Saturday the weather drove us mad forcing us to resume the final games of the day to Sunday morning. On Sunday HHC ½ SCR would face 57th SIG Co to see who would advance to the championship game and again HHC ½ SCR was victorious winning 11-2 setting them up for their chance to repeat as champions. In the losers bracket a former opponent was battling their way through for their chance at the championship. B CO 1-2 IN #2 would win 3 straight games and earn the right to play HHC ½ SCR again for the championship. After already playing 3 games HHC ½ SCR would prove too much to handle and complete their repeat as champions by winning the championship game 14-7. There were 10 teams participating in this tournament and everyone enjoyed themselves. Intersted in our Sports & Fitness Programs? USAG Hohenfels -- Soldier & Family Programs

What About Dads? by Nicole Ceterski, LCSW

When a couple is expecting a new addition to the family, it may seem that all eyes are set upon the expecting mom’s belly, and stay there until the baby is born. After delivery, the attention usually shifts directly to the newborn and stays there indefinitely. While the excitement of pregnancy and having a child can be magical, it can often leave dads wondering “What about me?” Views about fathers and their roles in families have changed dramatically over the past several decades. Fathers have gone from being viewed as the family’s primary breadwinner and disciplinarian to having a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. While many continue to provide for families financially, it is now common for fathers to also be more intimately involved in their children’s everyday lives. Today we see dads driving children to sports practice, helping with homework, reading nighttime stories and cooking dinner. Mothers and fathers tend to have different parenting styles, and children thrive from having both types of interaction. Whether dads are working full time or staying at home to raise the children, research suggests that they can have just as much influence as moms in their children’s social competency, academic achievement and mental health. For example, dad’s involvement can help to improve their children’s self-esteem and curiosity, reduce impulsivity and disruptive behavior, improve verbal skills and increase scores on cognitive assessments. Adolescents with involved fathers tend to have less substance abuse, truancy and stealing. For fathers with daughters, their role is particularly important because the dad is the first man she will ever love. From him she will develop her sense of independence, confidence and beliefs about how she should be treated by a man and future mate. The responsibility of parenthood is a big job, and fathers have the ability to nurture their children in so many ways. So how can dads be even better? Be an advocate for your children: At the doctor’s office, school, or on the playground, make it a priority to know your children’s interests, schedules, strengths, and challenges, and then be prepared to speak up for them. Be the strong voice your children need! Support your children’s mother: Find out what you can do. You may not be able to breastfeed, but you can help to burp, change diapers and bathe your newborn. And even though parenting consumes a lot of time and energy, try to find time to nourish the relationship with your partner. A father and mother who respect each other can help provide a secure environment for their children. Recognize that your role is always changing: Your interactions with your child as a newborn will be different than as a teenager, but the fundamentals are still the same: spend time with your child, show affection, discipline with love and be a role model and teacher. Remember that your job as a father is never done, but try to recognize your accomplishments and cherish the special moments along the way. 24 | Bavarian-American

Special Needs Accommodation Process (SNAP) by Theresa Ortiz, MSCP; Exceptional Family Member Program Coordinator What is SNAP? The Special Needs Accommodation Process (SNAP) Team brings together many individuals involved with children with medical and/or educational needs who would like to participate in Child Youth School Services (CYSS). The SNAP team explores garrison child care and youth supervision options for child & youth that have medical diagnosis that reflects life threatening conditions, functional limitations and behavioral & psychological conditions. For example, if a child has a severe allergy to milk products, then a SNAP meeting would be held to ensure that the child would not be given a snack that contained milk while in care with CYSS. The team discusses and plans reasonable accommodations necessary to keep the child safe and maximize his or her participation in any program. Your child does not need to be enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) to require a SNAP meeting. Who are the SNAP members? The SNAP team consists of: - EFMP Coordinator - Army Public Health Nurse - CYSS Personnel - Parents

Who may be referred for a SNAP meeting? Some examples of SNAP referrals include but are not limited to: - Asthma - Allergies - Behavior Issues - Developmental Delays - Diabetes - Seizure Disorders What are the roles and responsibilities of the parents? It is mandatory that at least one parent or legal guardian attend. According to the EFMP Army regulation, AR 608-75, all eligible children and/or youth being registered for Army garrison CYSS will be screened to determine if the child/youth has a medical diagnosis that reflects life threatening conditions, functional limitations or behavioral/ psychological conditions. Barriers to effective couples’ communication

by Priscilla Fleischer, Family Advocacy Program Manager

Being married is hard work, and communication is the key to a successful marriage. Almost everyone miss-communicates at one time or another. The following are common blocks to communication between marriage partners, and a few strategies to avoid them. Intense Emotion: Because our feelings are so strong for the people in our family, we care very greatly about everything they say and do. This also makes us very vulnerable to the people that we love, and we can easily misunderstand or misinterpret what the other person is saying because we take everything he/she says personally. For example: The husband says he wants to play basketball with some buddies. The wife hears, “I don’t want to be with you.” The wife says she wishes they had a new couch. The husband hears, “You don’t bring home enough money to give me the things I want. You are a failure.” Individual Differences: People are different. They come from different families with different expectations, and these can cause conflict in a marriage. One partner is quiet, the other talkative: “Why don’t you ever talk to me?” “Why do we have to talk about this all the time?” One partner is adventurous, the other cautious. One partner is a saver and the other enjoys spending money. One partner is an extrovert, and the other is an introvert. One is easy going, the other wants control. In a marriage this can cause problems. One partner is very outgoing and may feel that the other is not supportive of things the outgoing partner wants to do. The introverted partner may feel that being forced to do a lot of social things is too difficult and may resent having to be social. He/she may feel that the outgoing one is expecting too much of him/her. Trying to Change the Other Person: “If only he/she were more………”. Trying to make the other person different is not useful. It can only lead to hurt feelings and resentment. 26 | Bavarian-American

A wife may have had a father who was never home. She might make her husband feel guilty every time he wants to go out without the family. He might be a person who needs private time for himself, and may then hear that he is not being a “good husband”, or is being “selfish” for wanting to spend time by himself. No Time: The ultimate excuse for not communicating. This separates the partners. Not only communication, but also intimacy can be lost. Reverting to Pre-marriage Roles: As couples begin to create their own families, they run the risk of becoming more like their own parents, strangers to their partners. This can cause both anxiety and resentment in the partner. More effective strategies Remembering to use “I” statements: Saying what you mean directly can avoid misinterpretations. Assertive Communication: The way you say something can be as important as what you say. Understanding the other person’s point of view: This demands empathy and active listening. Actually scheduling time to talk to one another can re-ignite good communication and intimacy. Supporting growth in one another: Remembering to help the other person continue to evolve and grow as a person prevents stagnation in life and in the marriage. Expecting the partner to remain the same leads to resentment, boredom and rigidity.
