Launching the new CYSS Fee Policy

Questions & Answers Q: Why is the DoD changing its child care fee policy now? A: Child Care Fees have not kept pace with the significant growth in Military Families’ incomes or the increased costs to provide care during the past five years. Just like everything else, the cost of providing staff salaries, food, supplies, toys and equipment increase each year. Q: What are the major changes in the DoD Child Care Fee Policy for SY10-11? A: Family income ranges were adjusted and several new income ranges were added. Specifically, DoD added three Total Family Income (TFI) Categories. These additions raise the highest TFI ceiling from $70,000 to $125,000, increasing the Fee Range for TFI Category 1 to $29,400 and lowering the Fee Ranges for TFI Categories 2 through 6. Q: What is Total Family Income (TFI)? A: TFI a Family’s gross earnings before taxes. The DoD states these earnings include: • Wages, salaries and tips • Long-term disability benefits • Allowances for housing and subsistence, which are based on grade and status • In-kind allowances, which include the value of meals and lodging if a parent lives on the installation or eats at the dining facility • Specialty pay Q: What is not included in TFI? A: Combat zone pay, hostile fire pay and imminent danger pay • Variable and overseas housing allowances • Family separation pay • Child support or alimony • Cost of living allowance Q: Does the Army have to follow the DoD Child Care Fee Policy? A: Yes. The Military Child Care Act of 1989, codified in Section 568 of the National Defense Authorization Act for 1996, requires the DoD to establish DoD-wide uniform child care fees based on TFI for use by all branches of the Service. However, DoD has given the Army permission to phase-in the fee changes to minimize the financial impact on Families. Q: When will the new child care fees go into effect? A: The fees for SY10-11 Child, Youth & School Services will go into effect Oct. 1, 2010, for the October payment cycle. Q: How much will my child care fees increase? A: In order to lessen the financial burden on Army Families, each installation CYS Services Program will have an individualized fee plan to phase in the DoD Fee Policy. Depending on the TFI category, most fees for full-day child care will increase by $4 to $7 per week. Q: Will other fees be impacted by the SY10-11 Army CYS Services Policy Plan? A: Yes. Part day, Preschool, School Age, Camps, SKIES Unlimited instructional classes, Hourly Care, Family Child Care, and Youth Sports Fees will be adjusted. Q: Will I need to have my TFI category revalidated? A: Patrons must provide their TFI information as part of the registration process. Q: What if Families are unable to pay child care fees? A: Commanders may authorize additional fee reductions for Families with temporary documented financial hardships. Information will be available at the local installation.

Q: Is there any Fee Assistance for Families with deployed parents? Why? A: Yes. Additional fee reductions are available while a Military or DOD Civilian parent is deployed. Information will be available at the local installation. Q: Is there a multiple discount for siblings for a Family using Army child care options? A: Yes. A 15 percent multiple-child discount is given for each second and subsequent child in a Family enrolled in CYSS Programs. This will now be a standard practice Army wide. Q: How are child care fees determined? A: There is no change to the process for determining the child care fee a Family will pay. DoD has established nine TFI Categories. Each Familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fee depends on its TFI Category. Q: How and when will Families be informed of the specific fee plan for their installation? A: Families will begin receiving information about their specific fee changes beginning mid- August through personal contacts at their child care location, town halls, social media, radio and television commercials and stories overseas, and print materials. Q: Is there a website Families can go to for more information? A: Army will launch a website in late August to provide additional information on its School Year 2010-2011 Child Care Fee Policy.

Army Community Service Sponsorship Application & Training

A new online sponsorship training program is now available. Called “eSponsorship”, it can be accessed from a government computer at http://apps.mhf.dod.mil/esat or from a personal computer by accessing Military Installations at http://www. militaryinstallations.dod.mil - go to the Sponsorship article for any of the installations. The training is designed for anyone assigned to or accepting the role and responsibilities of being a sponsor. It is a quick, user-friendly training. It provides a needs assessment checklist to assist with sponsorship responsibilities and links to important resources valuable to everyone moving to a new location. Boot Camp for Spouses

Come out for a training that is beneficial to ALL military spouses, not just Army spouses! This training is Part 1 of the Army Family Team Building Training Program and is a great way to increase your understanding and awareness of military life. For those not so new to the Military, the course is also beneficial in the development of leadership skills and finding ways to get more involved in the community. Wednesdays are Wonderful for Garmisch Kids It is shortly after noon at the Garmisch Elementary/Middle School, the bell rings and most of the students head for busses to take them to nearby ski slopes. For over 30 years children in Garmisch have had the opportunity to take part in a ski and snowboard program with a unique twist – children are dismissed from school in order to participate. The Wonderful Wednesday Ski and Snowboard program takes place over 10 weeks from January to March. Children with skills ranging from beginners to advanced, participate in lessons provided by Edelweiss Lodge & Resort certified ski and snowboard instructors. The program originally operated entirely by volunteers now managed by USAG Garmisch Child, Youth & School Services is available to every Garmisch child in grades Kindergarten - 8. The Garmisch Elementary/Middle School, the Garmisch Parent Teacher and Student Association (PTSA), Community Outdoor Recreation, Army Community Services and Business Operations all work with CYSS to support

the program. On the first day, children assigned to groups according to their ages and abilities, start the 10 weeks. Beginners receive instruction in the Hausberg “Back Yard” while those more experienced head up the mountain for their lessons. The goal is for all to get up on the mountain where the real fun begins. By the end of the ten weeks, all of the children show remarkable improvement, with many going on to become life-long skiers. On the last day children participate in a gates course and the program wraps up with an awards ceremony. This community-wide partnership gives kids a chance to take part in a program in a top European ski resort that could be costprohibitive and possibly even not accessible in the States. To help further the cost of the program to parents, the Garmisch PTSA sponsors many fundraisers. Several private donations have also supported this effort. Please register your child early to participate in this great program. Spaces fill quickly!

While You’re in Garmisch... Did you know that you don’t have to live in Garmisch to take advantage of our Child, Youth & School Services programs? Whether you’re in Garmisch for a meeting, TDY or on vacation, you can enroll your children in our programs while you’re here. The Child Development Center is open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. for hourly care. The CDC provides care for children ages 6 weeks – 5 years. The School Age Center is open Monday-Friday, 2:30 - 6 p.m. for hourly care. The SAC serves children in grades Kindergarten -5. The Youth Center hours are 2 - 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 2 - 10 p.m. on Fridays. If you are currently enrolled in a CYSS program at your home garrison we can arrange to have an electronic copy of your files sent to us. Otherwise, we will ask you

to complete a visitor registration. If you are eligible for Army Family Covenant benefits at your home garrison (such as free or reduced hourly fees), you may use them in Garmisch. We highly recommend you call the CDC or SAC up to 30 days ahead of time to ensure we have space available as we cannot always guarantee same-day spaces. The Crafts Tree Programs & Classes Mosaic Appliqué Class – “Wind Dance” Wall-Hanging

Tuesdays, 5:30- 8:30 p.m. (4 sessions) Fee: $89 (freezer paper & polyester batting included) Level: Advanced Beginner. Please schedule in advance. Upon popular demand we offer this class on the appliqué technique. The Mosaic appliqué is a very interesting technique that works beautifully with landscapes and pictorials. There are unlimited possibilities for using this method. It can be applied to contemporary as well as traditional designs. Odd-shaped or curved patches are easily handled. All appliqué is invisibly done by machine. By the end of the class each student will have finished a small “Wind Dance” wall hanging, size 14” x 15”.

Quilting Class – Sampler Quilt - 101 on Log Cabin Blocks

Wednesdays, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. (5 sessions) Fee:$89 Level: Beginner & Advanced. Please schedule in advance. Upon request we are offering this class for those who are interested to explore an exciting collection of Log Cabin blocks. Each student will work on a pretty Log Cabin Sampler that will cover different techniques. You will also learn how to finish a quilt. For those who took the previous beginner class this is an excellent opportunity to learn the next step.

Quilting Class - Small Mystery Quilt

Wednesdays, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. (5 sessions) Fee: $65 Level: Beginner. Please schedule in advance. Yes, mysteries can be daunting since you have no idea it’s style or how it is put together but take a chance and make the leap. Every time the class meets we will make some parts and end up with a nice small quilt. A great opportunity to meet and greet your fellow quilters and the perfect way to stretch your quilting muscles and try something new.

Wood Shop Safety Class

Every 4th Tuesday of the month, 5:30 - 7 p.m. and every 2nd Sunday of the month, 3:30 - 5 p.m. Fee: $20. Adults only. The class is a prerequisite to use the shop’s power tools and machines. Upon completion you receive the MWR Arts & Crafts Qualification Card which is honored at all MWR crafts facilities and you may use the shop for do-it-yourself projects.

Basic Ceramics Pouring Class

2 hour class. Please schedule in advance. Fee: $20 - includes instruction & materials (slip, paints and glazes, shop and firing fees) for one small project. Level: Beginner You will learn how to pour and finish while making one easy class project to take home.

Handbuilt Pottery Class

2 sessions of 2 hours. Please schedule in advance. Fee $48 - includes instruction & materials for 2 class projects: clay, paints and glazes, firing fees, tools, brushes and everything else you will need Level: Beginner & Advanced You will learn coil and slab building techniques! Make cups, bowls, flowerpots, candleholders, or whatever you imagine!

Columbus Day Weekend - Top Chef Garda

October 8-11 and November 25-28: Three nights on the lakeshore in beautiful Torri del Benaco with two days of cooking classes in a villa at Le Gemme di Artemisia overlooking the lake plus wine tasting. Monday is market day - we head home stocking up on goodies and visit some vineyards for wine tastings on the South Tyrol Wine Road. A foodie extravaganza! Departs 5 p.m. Cost: $575.

Munich and the Third Reich

October 24: We meet at the Bahnhof just prior to 8 a.m. for a train ride to Munich. Once we arrive we recreate the Bier Hall Putsch exactly as it happened in 1923, have lunch, visit the site of the Munich Accords (where Czechoslovakia ceased to be a unified country) and other places associated with the Nazi movement. The Iceman Cometh - Bolzano

October 30: The “Iceman” is the Neolithic man, who lived 5300 years ago whose body was discovered by hikers in 1991 on the Austrian/Italian border. He is maintained in a fantastic museum in Bolzano. Join us on a day trip there where we also have time to visit the famous Saturday Market. A long day filled with delights. Cost is $42.

Neuschwanstein, Wieskirche, and the Ettal Monastery

October 31: Visit the most popular tourist attraction in Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle. As opposed to most of the tours that concentrate on the scandalous upbringing of Ludwig and his “tragedy”, this tour is called Ludwig and Richard and focuses as much on the famous composer as well as the shy king. Essential to an understanding of the “Ludwig World” is an acquaintance with the world of nineteenth century German politics and there will be some talk about that as well! In addition, a short stop for lunch in the castle town of Füssen, a short stop at the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site of the Wieskirche, and the Ettal Monastery. Cost is $39. Bavarian-American

Prague Weekend with Bohemian Beers

November 5-7: Let us go see the place that everyone wants to see! We will leave at 4:15 p.m. from the Burke Center. There will be a daytime tour Saturday with a fair amount of free time and a special guided Dutro tour of the Franz Kafka museum. Two full nights in Prague for the low price of $270.

Venice & Verona Weekend

November 12-14: We stay two nights in a Vicenza area hotel. On Saturday we start early for Venice (7 a.m.) and an all day tour. See some great art and architecture, pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, gondolas, and good places to eat! The Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) is an ACS program that demonstrates the Army’s commitment to Families of the Fallen. The mission of SOS is to provide enhanced services to these Families. Financial counseling and support are available as our mission is to improve services to you, provide education on the roles and responsibilities of all agencies within your community and much more. Army Emergency Relief (AER) is the Army’s own emergency financial assistance organization and is dedicated to “Helping the Army Take Care of its Own”. AER funds are made available to provide emergency financial assistance based on valid need to Soldiers – active and retired – and their dependents. Spouses can get AER assistance with a valid general Power of Attorney. POV repairs and emergency travel form the largest portion of requests.

Compassion fatigue, or the “cost of caring,” is a natural reaction to working with traumatized people. Tang Soo! Their lone American voices rang out in the large gymnasium. Five students from Brian Oldenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Netzaberg Tang Soo Do Class competed in the German National Tang Soo Do Youth Championships in Munich on July 10th. The only Americans at the tournament, all five students won trophies and medals in competitions for Forms, Weapons, Free-fighting and Breaking. The youngest student, Avery Gabavics (7), beat students twice her age to win first place in the forms competition. Jonathan Williams was the overall male co-champion of the tournament. Tang Soo Do is a traditional form of Korean karate, taught by Brian Olden, who is a 4th degree Black Belt Master Instructor. Classes are held at the Netzaberg Teen Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Parents may enroll their 8 - 18 year old children for the next session, which is now ongoing. In addition to the online resources, Child, Youth & School Services School Age and Youth Centers offer Homework and Technology Labs. Homework Lab instructors work closely with the School Liaison Officer and local Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools to ensure your students have the tools they need to succeed. The labs are equipped with a wide variety of resources to support what the students are learning everyday in school. The state of the art Technology Labs offer a wide variety of computer and digital education options. Students can explore astrology, photography, engineering, software programs, robotics and more. For those little ones that are looking forward to Kindergarten in School Year 2011-2012, CYS Services has the Pre-School Strong Beginnings Program available at your local Child Development Center. CYS Services partners with DODEA to provide after-school activities

eginning this fall, Child, Youth and School Services will provide after-school activities for the students at the Netzaberg Middle School. The programs, which will begin immediately after the final bell of the day and run no later than 5 p.m., will provide the students an opportunity to experience new things, have fun, and be healthy. Bus transportation will be provided from the school to Family and MWR facilities for programs not held at the Middle School. CYSS will bus students and back to Rose Barracks Youth Center or Netzaberg Youth Center after the activity. All programs are free of charge; students only need to be registered with CYS Services. Here is a sample of the programs offered at the Netzaberg Middle School this fall: Junior Journalists: The ‘Zine: Find out what it takes to plan, design and publish a magazine. Students will work on a quarterly publication focusing on what’s important to them. Weekly meetings will focus on a variety of topics, from writing to photography, to puzzle design and technology work. They will also have a chance to go behind the scenes of the Armed Forces Network Bavaria studios to see how radio and television stories are produced. At the end of each three month publishing cycle, the students will have a professionally printed magazine for Youth by Youth. Netzaberg Knights Bowling League: Students will get a chance to take on their classmates in this fun but competitive league.

Each class will be able to enter up to 13 teams of three to take part in this three-month league, with prizes (and bragging rights) awarded to the top teams from each grade. Each team will play two games per week, and bowling shoes are provided. Sports & Fitness Club: Think of this as Open Gym with a purpose. We provide the Youth the opportunity to play a variety of games (flag football, volleyball, and basketball), do a little skate boarding, or just run around. Young athletes will have the opportunity to hone their skills or develop new ones. This is a great opportunity for students to burn off the stress of the day before heading home to tackle their homework. Students at the Vilseck High School will also have additional opportunities to keep active thanks to CYSS. Youth can keep fit with BODYPUMP classes at the Rose Barracks Fitness Center; learn about Robotics at the Rose Barracks Library, or knock ‘em down with the Rose Barracks Youth Center Open Bowling nights. It’s easy to understand how children get the message that “all you can eat” is an American tradition. But, as childhood obesity increases and children are diagnosed with conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, we know that we have to teach children good habits at an early age.

on their plates. If they eat it all and want some more, it’s okay to give them a little more. But if they want to go play instead of eating more, let them go play! They need the exercise as much as they need food for healthy development!

It can be difficult for parents to look at growing children and accept that their stomachs don’t need large quantities of food. Those little voices from our childhood are in the back of our heads; Grandma saying “Clean your plate” and Daddy chirping “You eat like a bird…..you’ll never be strong if you don’t eat”. But, growing children require a small amount of healthy foods to grow and develop. Here’s an easy way to get an idea of how much space there is in your child’s stomach: Ask your child to make a fist with both hands. Then put their fists together in front of their chest. The size of their two little fists is about as big as a young child’s stomach. (It works for adults too)! With that little bit of space, you can see why it is so important to not let them fill up with sugar and fat. You can also guess why it is important to make sure children get healthy snacks in between meals. If we see a lot of food, we eat a lot of food. But if we don’t see as much on our plate, we don’t usually eat as much. So, we can help children eat smaller portions by just putting little servings of food

It’s never too early to teach healthy habits to children. CYS Services is serious about child health and nutrition. Our programs follow USDA guidelines for nutrition and portion sizes. CYS Services programs focus on teaching children to select healthy meals and snacks instead of empty calorie food. Well, what if I told you that there was a movie that not only condoned this behavior, but encouraged it? To the left of you, someone is swearing at the main characters that appear on screen, and behind you someone is throwing toast and rice over your head. Of course the film is being played on a giant screen, like any other movie. The difference is the cast a actors perform in front of the screen for the duration of the movie, adding to, and shadowing the action. Although their performance mimics the movie, they add so much more with their performance. That’s all you get for now! Hiking Tuesdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Rose Barracks Outdoor Recreation Center This fall we will begin day hiking trips in the beautiful Bavarian Forests. We will take you to fascinating areas like the Devil’s stone, Maximillian’s cave, a Roman Church and much more. Most hikes will include time for a picnic lunch before returning home. Caving October 2 Join us for an underground expedition!! We will take you through the largest natural cave in Bavaria!! The Bismarck Grotte is Bavaria’s best kept spelunking secret. Let us guide you on an exciting 3-4 hour tour of this natural wonder. Using headlamps you’ll crawl through tunnels, use basic rock climbing techniques to climb up tubes and maybe see some bats.

Klettersteig October 9, November 13 Klettersteig is a European specific hiking discipline that combines hiking and climbing. Rather than climbing up a rock face klettersteiging involves “crossing” or “traversing” rock walls on an established trail while utilizing a safety harness and safety belays. Our local Klettersteig is located in the Hirshbach Valley. From calm to extreme, a Klettersteig adventure can be customized to meet your desires. Outdoor Rock Climbing October 23 We will take you climbing in one of the most famous climbing areas in Europe, the Frankenjura. There are climbs for every skill level and our instructors will help teach those new to climbing how to belay safely.

When playing golf on a rainy day the best you can do is, to have packed the necessary clothing and equipment, adapt your game to the conditions, and stay in a positive frame of mind. The team of Michael Galliher, Kyle Hardison, Travis Dadato and Corey Culpepper fired a sizzling 67, 5-under par to take first place in the 4 person team, 18 hole Scramble Open Level Tournament. We had a three way tie with 68, 4-under par, in which the tie breaker was decided by the score difficulty of the holes. Second place went to the team of Michael Mattice, Robert Abrego, David Twiggs, and Brandon Mchaney. Third place went to the team of Stephen Seitz, Ozro Johnson, Anthony Prescott and Jim Moss. In the Unit Level 4 person team 18 Hole Scramble Tournament, the team of 5th Maintenance Co. “Saltines” consisting of Troy Sherman, Oliver Clayton, Douglas Mitchell and Josh Moritz took 1st place. The “Nearest to the Pin” award went to Michael Dobler 1.60 meter, and the Longest Drive went to Bob Braslin 249 meter.

A Co 1-2 IN Wins Softball Championships Eat. Sleep. Play Softball!! Are the words spoken by many softball players and that rings true for the top 6 teams from the Grafenwoehr unit level softball league participating in this year’s garrison championships. The regular season ended in early July and from the many teams that participated during the league the following teams qualified for the championships: #1 HHC 3-66 AR, #2 HHC 172ND IN BDE, #3 23RD ORD CO, #4 B CO 3-66 AR, #5 A CO 1-2 IN AND #6 709TH MP BN. The championships took place 13 – 15 July in Grafenwoehr at the softball triplex behind the Physical Fitness Center. The tournament started with the lower seeded teams playing for the right to play the top seeds. A CO 1-2 IN wasted no time in showing the competition they meant business by first beating B CO 3-66 AR 14-10 and then HHC 3-66 AR 9-5. On the 2nd day of competition A CO 1-2 IN made it look easy again beating HHC 172ND IN BDE 16-6. After that win, A CO 1-2 IN were the first team to move into the championship game where they would wait for the remaining teams to battle it out in the losers bracket for an opportunity to knock them off. It proved to be a tough task but three wins later B CO 3-66 AR won the right to take on A CO 1-2 IN for the championship. After already playing one game B CO 3-66 AR was poised to knock off A CO 1-2 IN. But with plenty of rest A CO 1-2 IN proved to be too hard of a match and they quickly won the game 10-2 and were crowned the 2010 unit level softball champions. Each and every participant in the league and the championships enjoyed themselves and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2011 to see if A CO 1-2 IN can defend their crown. A CO 1-2 IN and B CO 3-66 AR have qualified to represent the garrison at the Army Europe championships 12-15 August in Kaiserslautern, Germany. -Mike Bradfish 28

53rd Annual German July 30 - Aug. 1, 2010 We celebrated our 53rd annual German-American Volksfest with great food, fun and entertainment. About 80,000 people enjoyed this year’s event. Col. Avanulas “Van” Smiley joined CSM Zagara, Mayor Wächter, Mrs. Salazar and County Officials to kick off the traditional event by tapping the keg in the German beer tent after the ribbon cutting ceremony. Thanks to the assistance of our private organizations, units and Family Readiness groups, we were able to offer a variety of American cuisine. The ever popular Ice cream, Burger’s, Ribs, Nachos and T-Bone steaks made another comeback this year. A few new additions to the line-up such as Asian Pacific food which was a big hit, as well as tacos, burritos, chicken wings, funnel cake and fried candy bars. Germany and neighboring countries offered delicious food, beverages and entertainment -- as well as thrilling carnival rides and shopping opportunities at the numerous vendors throughout the fest grounds! “The Flying Boots” invited the crowd to Country Line Dancing. The Family and MWR tent entertainment highlights included Karaoke with DJ MCM. Star Wars, King Pin and Elvis Presley were walking around the fest grounds. For three days we’ve enjoyed Polka music as well as R&B and C&W. We appreciate the support provided by the German Bundeswehr for their military vehicles’ display. Family and MWR would like to thank everyone supporting the event. See you next year!

Instructions Not Included: Preventing Tantrums… It’s 1 p.m. You’re at the commissary. Turn the corner and you see (and hear) a red-faced, whining, yelling, kicking 2-year-old in the middle of an award-worthy temper tantrum. If you are the parent in this scenario it can be a mortifying experience, and yet most parents have experienced a situation like this. As children approach the toddler years, most parents begin bracing for the dreaded “terrible twos.” Some are shocked when they realize that temper tantrums can actually start as young as one year old and last until about 4 or 5, although they are most common from 2 to 3 years old. Tantrums can occur for a variety of reasons, including being tired, hungry, frustrated or ill. Very young children are not able to fully express themselves through language and they cannot understand the world from someone else’s point of view. Throwing a tantrum is one way for your child to respond if he does not get what he/she wants. Although an occasional temper tantrum is bound to occur during the toddler years, there are some simple steps to help to reduce the chances of having a public meltdown.

1) Take a nap:

Try avoiding errands with your child during naptime. Most toddlers still need a 1-2 hour nap, usually in the early afternoon. A well-rested child will be more cooperative, so plan accordingly.

2) Save a snack:

Make sure your child is not out on an empty stomach. Let him/ her snack while you are shopping, whether you pack cheese sticks in your bag or head straight to the bakery for a pretzel when you get to the store.

3) Distraction:

Enlist your child’s help. Keep a favorite toy available only for special errands or ask your child to hold an item while you shop. Children want to feel like they are being helpful. If you’re in the middle of a temper tantrum, remember that young children have short attention spans, so try distracting them with a toy or a funny face.

4) Make it quick:

If you have errands you must do even though your child is tired, hungry, or ill, make a list in advance and stick to it. You will reduce the time that temper tantrums are possible if you stay organized and keep your to-do list short.

5) Be flexible:

Even in the best planned outing, tantrums may still happen. Try taking your child into a more private area, such as a restroom or your car, and stay there until he/she can calm down. If your child is unable to be soothed, you may have to end your trip early. Most tantrums are relatively mild and last for only a short time, even though they may seem like forever. Try to stay calm, speak calmly and do not to give in to the original demand. Remember, as with all ages and stages, “this too shall pass.” Your child won’t always be a toddler, and then what will you do?

Guide to choosing the right Bank

Did You Know… Traditional banks not only make money from lending out your deposits, but approximately 40% of their income is derived from fees on your account. So, how do you go about choosing the right bank for you, while avoiding paying many fees and still benefiting from their services?

Here are five easy steps – 1. Make sure your bank is FDIC insured.

In an age of bailouts and bankruptcies, we hope it never happens, but FDIC insured accounts are covered up-to $250,000 if your bank happens to go under. If you use a credit union, make sure they are covered by the National Credit Union Administration, which offers the same protections as the FDIC.

2. Ask the bank for a detailed description of each type of account.

Ask about monthly fees and penalties for not living up to specific account terms clearly outlined, such as writing too many checks or not keeping enough money in the account. If you spend a little time shopping around you will find an account with no-minimum balance requirements and unlimited check-writing/debit transactions.

3. Once you have found the right bank, avoid overdrafts. The fee for nonsufficient-fund (NSF)

checks averages about $30. Banks normally honor the largest check first, leaving less money to cover smaller checks. So instead of bouncing one large check, you end up paying an NSF fee on each of the smaller checks.

4. Many banks automatically enroll their customers in so-called bounced-check protection. The bank will cover your NSF check, up to a certain limit, but you’ll still end up paying the bank’s NSF fee plus daily fees until you’ve made good on what you owe. Standard overdraft protection is a better buy. For a small fee, the bank will draw on your savings account, credit card or line of credit to cover bad checks.

5. Many banks charge a fee when you make purchases with your debit card.

Check with the bank to see if they charge this fee. If so, when the cashier asks, “Debit or credit?” after you present you card, pick the credit option and avoid the fee.

2nd Annual OUR HEROES’ TREE

October 12-November 10 With many adults as Veterans, the United States has a long tradition of patriotism. As citizens, we honor the service, commitment, and the ultimate sacrifice of the men and women who serve our country. We recognize the significance of the selfless service of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Through this program, community members create personalized ornaments that pay tribute to a soldier, sailor, airman, marine, coastguardsman, military veteran, or fallen service member in their lives. Each ornament is hung is a public knowledgement of the sacrifices of the service members and their families. In addition, community members are encouraged to submit a personal story about the hero featured on their homemade ornament. This program is funded and sponsored by The Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University.

October 25 Do you love cooking? Do you love cooking pumpkin? Test your skills in cooking with all things pumpkin; pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, or pumpkin dumpling. If it’s with pumpkin and you can cook it, then bring it!

2nd Annual GINGERBREAD HOUSE CONTEST

November 18 - Registration forms can be picked up at the library. November 29 - Gingerbread Houses need to be brought to the library. It’s holiday time and you know what that means….it’s time for Hohenfels 2nd Annual Gingerbread House Contest! To further assist potential builders, we have identified web sites that feature gingerbread house recipes, and sites that have gingerbread house patterns. If you would like to know more about the rules or how to enter the contest please contact the library. All gingerbread houses will need to be in the library on November 29 for patron voting to begin. The entries will be displayed through December 6. Winners will be announced on December 8.

Sky Diving - Czech Republic

October 2 Go skydiving in the Czech Republic with Outdoor Recreation! You will receive training from certified instructors Friday night and Saturday morning before your static line jump from a Russian AN2 Biplane. This air craft has an outstanding reputation for safety and all skydiving equipment is current. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll depart Friday at 5 p.m. and return Saturday at 8 p.m. You must have a current physical with no limitations and must not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. USPA Certified Jumpers are also welcome for a reduced cost $250

ATV Safety Course and Trail Ride

October 9, November 6 Meet at Outdoor Rec, at 9 a.m. for this full-day course, ending at 4 p.m. Participants must be at least 18 years old and come dressed in pants, long sleeves and sturdy boots. If these dates do not fit your schedule ODR can offer a course for your group or unit.

Kletter Steig in the Frankischen Schweiz

October 16 All the fun of Alpine travel without all the equipment. Klettersteig uses cables to replace ropes on many high level hikes in the Alps. This course is great introduction to the system and will prepare you for trips to the Alps next summer. Depart ODR, at 8 a.m. The price is $50 per person.

Vertical Wind Tunnel

October 30 We take a long drive up north for a chance to play in a vertical wind tunnel. All the fun of skydiving without the need of an airplane! Depart ODR at 4 a.m. Price TBD

Indoor SCUBA Diving

November 13, December 4 Since it is cold we decided to try SCUBA diving indoors for those who always wanted to try it. This introduction course will allow you to experience the underwater world for the first time while staying safe and warm inside a Giant indoor SCUBA Center. Thanksgiving Ski Getaway - Kaprun, Austria

November 24-28 Forget the turkey and come with us to Kaprun, Austria for the first ski trip of the season. Trip includes transportation, breakfast, dinner and lift passes. Price TBD

U.S. Forces Europe Combat Cross Country Championship Hohenfels Sportplatz This team running event is open to all active duty service members. Event registration is from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Sportplatz. The race will begin immediately following the pre-event briefing at 11 a.m.

IMCOM Europe Unit Level Flag Football Championship Hohenfels Sportplatz This championship tournament will consist of unit level league champions from various garrisons throughout IMCOM Europe.
