JANUARY 23, 7 P.M. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” tells the story of the “godmother of virology,” or the woman whose genes have benefitted practically anyone who’s ever taken a pill stronger than aspirin. Cancer cells on Henrietta Lacks cervix took on a life of their own at a Johns Hopkins lab and were later dubbed “HeLa” cells. In this biography, Rebecca Skloot introduces the real-life woman behind one of the most important medical discoveries in the last 100 years.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR

Martin Luther King, Jr., was an influential leader of the civil rights movement during the 1960s. He was born Michael King, Jr., on January 15, 1929, but was called Martin or M.L. from a young age. King skipped grades nine and 12 and attended Morehouse College at the age of 15, graduating with a degree in sociology. During the years of protest, he was arrested a total of 29 times, and in 1963, he was named Time magazine’s “Man of the Year.” Visit the library to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his legacy.
