HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

READ-STRICTED

Visit our special display at the library celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Read a book or watch a film this month to expand your knowledge about Hispanics and Latinos who have enriched our nation’s history. Use our great travel and cultural online resource Culture Grams to answer a question from our “Heritage Quiz” (don’t worry, we’ll give you lots of help), and you can enter the raffle to win a prize!

Catcher in the Rye . . . To Kill a Mockingbird . . . Harry Potter . . . What’s your favorite book? Chances are good that someone has tried to ban it. Every year, there are hundreds of attempts by individuals or groups to remove books from schools and libraries. The freedom to read is essential to our democracy, and reading is among our greatest freedoms. The books featured on our September display have all been targeted for removal in libraries or schools for various reasons. You’ll be surprised at many of the titles. Celebrate YOUR freedom to read and your right to choose your book during Banned Books Week.

BOOK CLUB

PRESCHOOL & TODDLER STORY TIME

Join in the guided discussion of one of the most acclaimed books of 2014, “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. This story, set in occupied France during WWII, is told in alternate viewpoints by a blind French girl and a German soldier whose paths cross in unexpected ways as they both try to survive the devastation of Saint-Marlo on the Brittany coast. Sign up at the library to receive emails about upcoming meetings and books.

September 17, 3 & UP September 24, 3 & UNDER Join us at the library for stories, songs and crafts. It’s never too early to introduce your child to the wonders of stories and reading. All children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

PRAGUE & PILSEN BREWERY

VENICE & VERONA, ITALY

The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge and Old Town Square; the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral in the Old Castle and a wonderful tradition of music-making by “Bohemians” of all stripes. You can attend an opera in one of Prague’s three opera houses where the performances are inexpensive and subtitled in English. Your guide will also provide an excellent tour of the Franz Kafka Museum as well as the “Slav Epic” by Alfons Mucha – twenty enormous paintings depicting the long march of the Slavic peoples toward nationhood and self-determination. We will tour the original Pilsner Urquell Brewery in – where else? – Pilsen! Since Pilsen is the European Culture Capital for 2015, it is quite possible that there will be other surprises as well! The great National Hero Jan Hus was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415, meaning that we will be in Prague during the weekend of the 600th anniversary! Expect great things! Price: $390 per adult, $195 per child (5-12); single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includes transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast).

In just one short weekend, you will see both Venice and Verona! On Friday afternoon, we drive to Vicenza where we will spend the night. Early Saturday morning, we make the short train trip to Venice where we will see great art and architecture, (Paul’s guided tours of the Academia and the Scuola di San Rocco are renowned), pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, gondolas and more. We will again spend the second night in Vicenza before our trip to Verona on Sunday. In Verona, you have the opportunity to tour the famous setting to Romeo and Juliet with its Roman Arena before dining at a wonderful restaurant. Price: $299 per adult; $145 per child (5-12); Single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includestransportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast).

SEPTEMBER 4-7

CONQUER THE ZUGSPITZE SEPTEMBER 18-19

The Zugspitze divides Germany and Austria and has the Partnach and Hoellental gorges. Day one, we hike 6-8 hours through the Reintal valley and stay at the Reintalangerhuette, one of the most famous huts in the Alps. Day two, we continue up steeper slopes to the Zugspitzplatt. From there, those who want to continue can scale up the rock “Klettersteig” to the cross. Price: $149 per person, $120 per child. Includes overnight with breakfast & dinner, cable car down, hiking poles, harness and guide. Great team building activity. Charter your own private trip.$8 per adult/child; free for children under 12.
