REACHING NEW HEIGHTS
WITH NICOLE KING AT THE WILD B.O.A.R. “Climbing promotes a drive in you to improve physically and mentally while also developing problem solving skills,” explains Nicole King, Top Rope Belay instructor at the Wild B.O.A.R. - Bavaria Outdoor Adventure & Recreation. Nicole, originally from Missouri, has been working for Family and MWR for a few years and has a passion for the outdoors.
Nicole’s husband, a Soldier, introduced her to climbing and helped her conquer a fear of heights. She states, “I’m inspired to climb because it challenges me. When I started to climb, I used strength and endurance, however it’s learning the technical skills that makes all the difference. Once you learn to use the rocks to your advantage, it opens up a whole new world of climbing. It’s a great feeling of success to master a route that is difficult.”
4 • Family and MWR LINK September 2015
Her favorite climb is a route in Colorado near Manitou Springs in the Rockies, but she is conquering new territory in Europe and enjoys the Höhenglücksteig (known as the good luck climb) in Germany and a klettersteig route called Ötztal in Austria near Innsbruck. The klettersteig route takes adventure seekers over a raging waterfall and is a trip offered by the Wild B.O.A.R.
Nicole started instructing six months ago and explains, “I am passionate about teaching others to climb to introduce a new skill and learn a different way to get out and be engaged in a healthy activity. Climbing lets you set personal goals and work to achieve it. The Wild B.O.A.R. Climbing Hall is a great place to build trust, camaraderie and self-confidence.” Other than climbing, Nicole proclaims she is an avid skier. Her father introduced her to the sport when she was 12 and she has been hooked ever since and loves going on the ski trips offered at the Wild B.O.A.R. Growing up, her family went camping, kayaking, fishing and backpacking. Nicole also enjoys hunting. While in college, she developed an interest in geology and fossils. Other interests she enjoys include: biking, gardening, traveling, klettersteiging, volleyball and frisbee. So, working at the Wild B.O.A.R is a perfect fit for Nicole. Her favorite Wild B.O.A.R. excursion has been an overnight trip with her husband to Croatia. They explored the city and visited ruins and the Colosseum in Pula. She enjoyed learning the history and culture of the country and visiting the ancient buildings and monuments. Another highlight of the trip was an excursion to Venice. Now Nicole looks forward to participating on a Wild B.O.A.R. trip to the Dolomites in Italy this winter. She adds, her favorite things about living in Germany are the culture, beauty and history of the country. She enjoys the local traditions, festivals and Christmas markets. She loves how lush the forests are and finds the architecture amazing. For her, every structure and street has a story and everything is vibrant and alive. Other than the Climbing Hall and high ropes course, Nicole’s favorite thing to do at the Wild B.O.A.R. is inspire others to get outdoors and share knowledge about the local area, activities and trips.
The Top Rope Belay Certification Class is offered Mondays 6-8 p.m.
The Wild B.O.A.R. Climbing Hall The Climbing Hall features different colored holds on the wall which indicate a specific route. Some routes are more challenging than others. The route name and difficulty level is marked at the bottom of each route. Three styles of climbing are available upon gaining the proper authorization/certifications at the WILD B.O.A.R. Climbing Hall. Bouldering, is a term used to describe a style of climbing that is relatively close to the ground so a harnesses and rope are not needed. A bouldering wall is located upstairs in the Climbing Hall. Tope Rope climbing is a style with the rope attached to the top of the route. A belayer is needed to take up slack as the climber ascends.
In Sport Lead climbing the rope is attached to the harness of the climber. As the climber ascends the route, they attach the rope to the wall through a network of anchors in the rock. The class is designed to teach the art of belaying for top rope climbing only. Belaying for a sport lead climber requires more instruction. Types of gear used and differences in design are discussed in the class, including hardpoint harnesses, carabineers and rope. Parts of the belay device and the application of the device are also reviewed. The belay device used in the class is an aperture device that utilizes friction to assist in slowing the climber.
After reviewing the hall and gear, participants are instructed to properly execute the belay technique. At the Wild B.O.A.R., the only belay method used is called the P.L.U.S. method which stands for pull, lock, under and slide. After a demonstration and practice sessions participants pair up and take to the wall. Since they are not yet belay certified, a staff member must be on “back up belay” at all times. After the practice session is complete, the certification test is discussed. Participants must wait at least 24 hours before returning the test out to earn the belay certification.
