Family and MWR is one of the largest employers of Family Members in Europe. Did you know that 65% of our staff members are Family Members? That’s right, everyday nearly 390 Family Members report to work throughout the BMC in support of Family and MWR programs and services; remarkably, many do so while, amongst other things, juggling children, unit commitments and the deployment of their Soldier! Family Members serve at all levels of our structure, from entry-level to management! Local National employees serve side-by-side. About twenty-percent of the Family and MWR staff members are Local Nationals, who also serve at all levels of our structure. Many entered into service as apprentices, and will serve until they retire! Our Local National staff has been the constant within the mobile military lifestyle, and carried us through transformation and fiscal uncertainty. Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) employees are federal employees of a different ilk. The Bob Stump National Defense Authorization Act (2003) gave Army Family and MWR the ability to transform our force from Appropriated-Fund (APF) General Schedule (GS) to NAF. Currently, all but two of our US Civilian staff members are serving under NAF appointment, which ensures our ability to adjust staffing rapidly to meet emerging mission requirements. Portability exists between APF GS and NAF, therefore staff can move between assignments without losing annual leave, retirement or other benefits. College Interns and Apprentices welcome. USAG Bavaria cooperates with several German trade schools, and German and US colleges and universities, to provide internship and practicum opportunities. We are very pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to as many as 50 interns each year. Volunteers and Contractors enhance our programs. Family and MWR draws heavily on the incredible talent of volunteers and contractors to provide fitness classes, therapeutic massage, theater and entertainment, hunting and fishing courses, Library support, art and sewing classes, martial arts, youth sports, special events, Bowling Pro Shop, Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS), and behind the scenes support. Each new talent, allows us to expand our programs and services to all of you! Family and MWR working hard for Soldiers and their Families! Audre Binder Director, Family and MWR

Trail Running Group Are you looking for running partners or want to bring your running to the new level? Join the Trail Running Group every Monday and Wednesday at noon. All skill levels welcomed! Whether you are training for your first 5k or another ultra marathon, you are invited to join us rain or shine for a 45 min run during the lunch time. First run on April 7. Trail running is as natural as running could ever be. The first people to pick up the pace and start striding along did so not on roads, tracks, or treadmills,
but on dirt paths, animal trails, and in open meadows. From a purely physical standpoint, you can build a lot more strength, on dirt or on grass, a lot of the energy gets absorbed by the ground so you wind up having to work harder to run the same distance, as well as working different muscles groups. Your balance will improve as a result of trying to keep your pace up despite navigating challenging terrain. So get out of the road! Running in beautiful scenery will never make you tired.

It’s time to get off our couches and enjoy the weather and some fresh air. Grab a chair, pack your lunch and head to one of the eleven lakes and/or two streams that Tower Barracks Training Area has to offer. Before you throw your pole in the water, you must attend a three-day fishing course with Wild B.O.A.R. Outdoor Recreation. Germany has many laws concerning fishing and as our host nation we must follow. If you are found fishing without a license the penalties can be steep. Fishers will find several varieties of trout, catfish and pike along with other fish in the German waterways. If you haven’t taken the fishing course yet, the next course starts March 7 and if you cannot make the date, there are 3 other opportunities in May, July and September. Make sure to sign up in advance. Want to get your kids involved, no problem. Children 18 and younger can obtain a Youth license. However, children younger than 10 don’t need to obtain a license, but must be accompanied by a licensed adult.
Fishing Course March 7-9
Contact Wild B.O.A.R. Outdoor Recreation for more information on these as well as on other upcoming events and trips.
German law is also very strict when it comes to hunting. Once a year Outdoor Recreation offers a lengthy course to obtain a hunting license. If you don’t have the patience to wait for the next course or cannot commit to the length of the course, you always have the option of skeet shooting; no, not the same, but another opportunity for anyone who enjoys target sports. There is a range off One Community Road that connects Rose Barracks and Tower Barracks. The Skeet Range is open every other weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and starting in March when the time changes, they will extend their hours till 5:30 p.m. for spring and summer. If you have any questions concerning the fishing courses, hunting license and sport shooting call the Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting program manager at Wild B.O.A.R. Outdoor Recreation on Tower Barracks .

Ernest Englhart, manager at Tower Barracks Automotive Skills Center, gave me the following tips to get rid of winter’s mistreatment on my vehicle. Of course the obvious, it needs a bath, not the kind we’ve all done throughout the winter, and the let’s see how many quarters we have or how long I can withstand the cold type of wash. Englhart is referring to a deep scrub, but most importantly the undercarriage. Wintertime driving has coated the bottom of our vehicles with salt and other grime. Grime, which if untreated, can lead to corrosion and eventually may result in rust. We are in luck though. Without any reservation needed, the Automotive Skills Center has heated bays with car lifts that can be used in order to get to those tough to reach spots with a steam cleaner. Following the steam cleaning of your undercarriage, you can use their coin operated or automatic car washes to get any additional grime off. Once you have completely washed the exterior of your car, it is recommended that you give it a good waxing. Since there are so many toxins that come in contact with your vehicles’ paint, it is suggested that you seek out a wax that serves as a cleaner as well. This will help remove those toxins while leaving a nice protective coat that will last you through the summer rays and into next winter. If you have never waxed your car before, you may want to apply the wax in an inconspicuous area before applying to the entire vehicle. This is also a great time to do some minor routine maintenance as you get your vehicle ready for spring and summer road trips. Check the fluids; this includes the oil, coolant, brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid. For safety reasons wipers should be changed every spring; if they are leaving streaks or you still can’t see out the window after using them, it’s probably time for new blades. The winter months can also be tough on tires. Check to make sure the tires are properly inflated, the cold temperatures can cause tires to underinflate. It may lead in a decrease in fuel efficiency and more importantly underinflated tires compromise handling
and braking. We all had to have our winter tires on our vehicles in October, but the question is when is it safe to take them off. Englhart says, Germans go by the rule O to O - October to Ostern, which is Easter in the German language; this is an easy way to remember when to put the winter tires on and take them off. The Automotive Skills Center is provided to soldiers and their Families as a great source for saving money on cost of vehicle repairs and maintenance, as well as learning new skills. Some of their other services are towing services, vehicle unlock service, vehicle storage and paint bay (Tower Barracks location only). Contact them during business hour for more information on how you can benefit from their services.
Automotive Skills Center
As spring approaches, I dread the long awaited checklist that lies before me; this list is known to many as the spring-cleaning checklist, but this year it seems a bit longer than usual. With my husband currently deployed, I’ve learned that in addition to my home, my vehicle needs some spring-cleaning as well. Yes, I’m talking about the cookies my son has stuffed in between the seats and the sticky hand prints on my window, but it goes beyond that. I’m talking about a thorough cleaning to undo winter’s damage. The slush, salt and cold temperatures have taken a toll on our vehicles, and now its time for some much needed TLC–tender loving care.

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – When it comes to celebrations in Germany, colorfully decorated trees aren’t just for Christmas anymore. Roughly four weeks before Easter, handcrafted eggs dangle from the branches of birch trees, symbolizing new life and fertility, and towns, big and small, are painted in a sea of pastel. Public fountains are adorned elaborate greenery, garland and florid Easter eggs to welcome the spring season and offer thanks for lifegiving water. Each town seeks to make its decorations bigger and brighter than the next, and one local village, Sulzbach-Rosenberg, still holds bragging rights. In 2005, this small town just 18 kilometers south of Vilseck entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the most eggs used to decorate an “Osterbrunnen,” or Easter fountain. The townspeople managed to hang a total of 16,500 eggs, beating out the previous record of 11,600 held by Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Colorful eggs decorate community fountains in town across Germany during the Easter season.

Easter traditions provide colorful displays
While the ornamentation comes early, the official Easter holiday in Germany begins on Gruendonnerstag (Maudy Thursday). Gruendonnerstag means “Green Thursday” and is believed to be the day on which the Last Supper was held. It is tradition to clean your house thoroughly on this day, a custom possibly linked to the preparation of a Passover Feast.
Green food, such as spinach, kale, cress, leek, chives and other herbs are traditionally eaten on this day. In both cultures, Good Friday is a day when Christians reflect on the crucifixion of Christ. In Germany, the day is known as both Karfreitag meaning “sorrowful Friday” and Stiller Freitag, or quiet Friday. Unlike the U.S., Good Friday, along with Ostermontag (Easter Monday) are national holidays in Germany. While there are apparent differences, many other German and American traditions overlap throughout the four-day celebration. Easter eggs are dyed and children anticipate a visit from the “Osterhase” or Easter Bunny. Ostersonntag (Easter Sunday) brings church services, family gatherings complete with culinary overindulgence, rousing Easter egg hunts and baskets filled to the brim with chocolate and candy. Germany stands alone, however, when it comes to the Saturday night bonfire (a symbol for the sun as the giver of life), and the baking of a braided sweet bread in the shape of a wreath, (Osterbrot), which is found in German bakeries around the holiday.
Whether you say “Happy Easter” or “Frohe Ostern” the tradition of dying Easter eggs is a cultural similarity.
But America holds her head high as the birthplace of the infamous chick-shaped marshmallow treat; because nothing says “Happy Easter” or “Frohe Ostern” quite like a candy Peep.
